(Rajendra) Talaq (1958)

Kamini Kadam, born Manik Kadam, was introduced in a Marathi film, “Yere Maazya Magalya”, in 1955 under the name of Smita. After acting in a number of Marathi films she was introduced to Hindi film audience in the name of Kamini Kadam in Mahesh Kaul-directed “Talaq” in 1958. She acted in only six Hindi films, three of them with Rajendra Kumar (“Talaq” in 1958, “Santan” in 1959, and “Maa Baap” in 1960”). Her last Hindi film was “Sapne Suhane” released in 1961. Then Kadam completely disappeared from the film scene but made a comeback in a Kannada film in 1967, "Krantiveera Sangolli Rayana". She passed away the following year.

In “Talaq”, Kamini in some scenes appear to mimic Madhubala, especially in her mannerisms. The movie was written and co-produced by Pt. Mukhram Sharma. With the topic of divorce as the central theme, the movie fails to establish any convincing reasons that force the couple to separate. The ensuing drama was not compelling and leaves much to be desired.

The movie brought the music director C. Ramchandra and the lyricist Kavi Pradeep back together. They worked in nearly ten films and the association was fruitful in coming up with several good hits. The last time they were together before this film was in “Nastik” released in 1955. That film boasted some of the best songs of their collaboration. “Talaq” has some good songs but it pales in comparison with the caliber of songs from “Nastik”.

Several songs from this film appear more than once. These include “Nayi Umar”, “O Baabu”, and “Dukhiyon Pe”. But the wordings are the same as well as the song. Therefore, I am not uploading these second versions.

I am uploading the songs from this film and some of the music clips from the film, all ripped from a DVD, in two back-to-back posts. A word of caution. The quality of the sound from the DVD was uneven. This also reflects in the songs.

Here are the songs from this film…

(Amitabh) Laawaris (1981)

Thanks to some fine songs and good performances from the principal actors, this rehash of several hit movies from Prakash Mehra, became a huge hit. The signature song of the album was "Mere Angne Mein". Even though both female and male versions became very popular, it was Amitabh's that swept the nation away. In one poll, I read somewhere, it was declared as the song of the 80's decade. I am uploading these songs from an original soundtrack album in back-to-back two posts.

As a side note, a recent Hindi film, “Housefull, released in 2010, had a song which borrows heavily from the hit Kishoreda’s song from this film, “Apni To Jaise Taise”. The song from "Housefull" was composed by the trio Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy was sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, Mika, and Sajid Khan.

Here are the songs in the first post...

(Dharmendra) Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973)

Here is a beautiful musical from RD. Kishoreda has some lovely numbers in it. But to me the standout song, one of my all-time favorite songs, is the duet by Asha & Rafi Saab, the beautiful "Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko". I was attending one of Ashaji's concerts where she told the audience how this song evolved. RD was thinking about it for some time in his mind and suddenly he knew what to do. He had Asha accompany him to bazaar to buy some wine glasses. They returned to the studio and RD created this tune using clinking of the wine glass with a spoon and had Asha and Rafiji sing the song to its accompaniment.

Nasir Hussain, who directed this movie, originally wanted Asha Parekh, his favorite star, to be the leading lady. But Asha was readying herself to go on a tour abroad with her dancing troupe and was not immediately available. Zeenat readily accepted when the role was offered to her.

One of the delightful music pieces is the long number performed by the trio Asha, Kishore and RD, "Aap Ke Kamre Mein Koi Rehta Hai". In spite of its length, the song entertains. The title song also was a hugely popular number.

Neetu Singh, who started as a child star, was promoted to adult roles the previous year in 1972. The film she starred in that year, “Rikshawala”, flopped. Producers were shying away to make any more adult role offers to her. When producer and director Nasir Hussain approached her to be in a dance number in this film, she readily accepted it. The hit song “Lekar Hum” was picturized on her. Her eye catching dress and eye popping dance moves got immediate attention. This dance number gave her career an immediate boost and revived her career for good.

That is Aamir Khan, current day’s hot star, playing the role of the youngest brother in the film when they were all children. This was his debut movie. Nearly 17 years later, he made the debut as an adult in his uncle Nasir Hussain’s “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1989)” which was a super hit and immediately established him as a star to look forward to in the future.

This movie was made into several other languages, notably in the South. All of them were hits.

Here are the songs from this popular album...

(Raaj) God And Gun (1995)

Raaj made only one more movie after this, "Jawaab", also in 1995. Since Raaj started his career in 1952, many things have changed in the 43 years he worked in the film industry. Most of the old stalwarts of the industry either passed away or passed the baton to the next generation, sometimes to the members of their own families. For example, take the music directors of this film, Anand & Milind, who are the sons of the great music director of yesteryears Chitragupt. Also the lyricist, Sameer. Son of another great lyricist of yesteryears, Anjaan. The old singers gave way to the new ones. These include the new set of singers, like Abhijeet, Arun Bakshi, Kumar Sanu, Poornima, Sadhna Sargam & Udit Narayan. These are the singers in this album.

Here are the songs from this album...
