(Amitabh) Ram Balram (1980)

Director Vijay Anand took the hit team of Dharamendra & Amitabh who gave "Sholay (1975)" and brought this action packed thriller. Several songs from the film also became popular. It also included a song with both Zeenat and Dharam in buff (very embarrassing to look at) and a romantic song between Rekha and Amitabh. Expectations were high that this movie will fly and create all sorts of box-office history. Yet it managed to be only a moderate success.

I am uploading all songs from an original soundtrack album in two back-to-back posts. Here is a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves...

(Raaj) Saudagar (1991)

The main feature of this lavishly produced movie was that Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar were acting together after 32 years. The only movie they acted together was Gemini's huge hit "Paigham (1959)." They played brothers in that movie with Dilip having the major share of the role.

Besides these two thespians there were a host of others including two newcomers in this film. Manisha Koirala and Vivek Mushran were introduced in this film. Manisha went onto make herself a good name but Mushran’s acting stint was short lived.

The story attributed to the producer and director Subhash Ghai was another rehash of Shakespearean tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.” There was nothing novel about the movie even though it was shot in beautiful locales in India and was helped by excellent photography.

Dilipji looked overweight, a very puffed look. In general one expects very restrained and consummate performance from him, and he looked very much overly dramatic in the interpretation of his role. Because of the anticipated high expectations, the movie hardly scored points except in the areas already mentioned, plus possibly music. Originally I didn’t care for these songs, may be because I didn’t care for the movie itself, but they tend to grow on you. LP does a credible job here. In the end one leaves with the feeling after watching this lengthy movie that this beautiful canvas had a splash of lovely colors adorning it but represents a wasted effort on retreaded and rehashed subject.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here are the details of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves…

It is not different. They are one and the same. It was error on my part. I have made proper corrections per your suggestion. Thanks for keeping me honest, Aditya. Cheers. -S

(Amitabh) Shaan (1980)

How do you top "Sholay" that was released in 1975 and went onto make box-office history? Not easily. Take for example this movie. The same company that made "Sholay" made this film. Same producer, G.P. Sippy. Same director, Ramesh Sippy. Same story writing team of Salim & Javed. Same music director, R.D. Burman. Same lyricist, Anand Bakshi. The movie had a whole bunch of stars with Amitabh leading the way. Yet the movie didn't even come close to what "Sholay" did.

One big reason "Sholay" was such a huge success was because of the great actor, Amjad Khan, who made a stunning debut with that film. His portrayal of Gabbar Singh was one of the greatest performances ever. His sadistic villain was at once ruthless and terrifying. This movie, "Shaan", was trying to emulate popular James Bond movies. Kulbhushan Kharbanda was the maniac villain here. He did an okay job but he is no Amjad Khan.

With so many stars crammed into one film, the movie goes on and on. However, one of the redeeming feature was its music. RD delivers once again. Almost all songs are good. Rafi Saab, who passed away before this movie was released, had several songs to his credit. All of them became very popular, especially the solo, "Naam Abdul Hai Mera".

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs...
