(Kishore) Door Ka Raahi (1971)

Kishore’s genius has never been more evident than in this film. He had nine different responsibilities in making this film. He wrote the (1) screenplay from his own (2) story. He (3) produced and (4) directed the film. He (5) sang four solos and a duet with Sulakshana Pandit. He also wrote (6) lyrics for one song “Main Ek Panchhi” sung by his son Amit Kumar. He (7) composed the music for the film. He was the main (8) actor in the film. Interestingly the duet he sang, he lent his voice as a (9) playback singer for his older brother Ashok Kumar who had a pivotal role in the film. Anyway one looks at it that is quite an accomplishment…

I am uploading songs from this film in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set…

(Dev) Tere Mere Sapne (1971)

This is another memorable musical score from Burmanda. When it comes to melody Burmanda is always up there on the top of the charts. He was assisted in this film by his wife Meeraji. She was a singer as well as a musician. When Burmanda was ailing in early 70's she served as an assistant music director for seven of his films.

This movie was based on A.J. Cronin's "Citadel" novel and the actor and director Vijay Anand treats the subject with lots of care combining entertainment with moral dilemmas. In 1972 it was remade in Bengali. It was also made in Telugu in 1982 as "Madhura Swapnam".

I am uploading songs from this film from an original soundtrack album in two back-to-back posts. Here are the songs in the first post from the melodious music of Burmanda...

(Dev) Ye Gulistan Hamara (1972)

Guru Dutt passed away in 1964 but his younger brother Atma Ram tried to keep his brothers film production company alive for some time. Ram worked as an assistant to Guru in few films but left him in disgust after Guru decided to give Raj Khosla reins to handle the directorial duties of C.I.D.. There was nothing new about this as Guru was noted to renege on the promises he used to make.

But after Guru passed away, Ram returned to revive his brothers production company as Gurus sons were still young. Except for Shikar made in 1968 most of his efforts went unnoticed.

Dev, who gave a start to Guru as a full-fledged director with his film Jaal in 1952 and starred in Gurus earlier film C.I.D. in 1956 returned to star in this film. In the 20 years time span Devs fortunes also fluctuated wildly with an occasional hit amidst several misses, especially after 60s.

Like many of Gurus films, few people were common in this effort as well. Johnny Walker, a friend of Guru, had a role. Gurus noted photographer, V.K. Murthy was in-charge of camera work. Burmanda who composed many of earlier Guru-directed films was back. However, none of these helped the film.

Speaking of Burmanda, folk music of Assam dominated the songs of this film. Burmanda, who was a master of that music, blended songs nicely with sounds of melodious instruments. Incidentally, RD, son of SD joined Lataji and his father in a song Raina Soyee Soyee. In a way RD was returning a favour to his father. Only the previous year, SD sung in the film Amar Prem the song Doli Mein which RD composed music for.

Here are the songs from this album

(Kishore) Main Sundar Hoon (1971)

This film was based on the 1964 Tamil hit Server Sundaram. Comedian Mahmood played the central character Sundar in the Hindi film. The movie had uncredited brief appearances by several stars. They include Waheeda, Kishore, lyricist Anand Bakshi, co-music director Jaikishan, and others. The attached picture below shows a still from the film (song Naach Meri Jaan). In this Bakshi Saab is sitting to the right smoking a cigarette and Jaikishan is to the left (with his right hand against his chin). Jaikishan passed away in 1971, the same year this film was released. He was only 41 years old.

Shankar & Jaikishan return to AVM Productions after 15 years. Earlier they composed hit music for AVM for the 1956 film Chori Chori. S&J won their first 1956 Filmfare Award as the Best Music Directors for that film.

The songs from this film are not of the caliber as Chori Chori but they are not bad. Here are the songs from Main Sunder Hoon

(Kishore) Bombay to Goa (1972)

After his National Award winning debut in K.A. Abbass Saat Hindustani in 1969, Amitabh was still trying to get a foothold in the film industry when this film came. In 1971 he had a great performance in a supporting role in Hrishikesh Mukherjees Anand but the stardom still eluded him. He has to wait another year to make lasting impact with Prakash Mehras hard hitting movie Zanjeer. Watching now Bombay to Goa one really cannot see that this lanky and tall actor will be such a tremendous force in the coming years in the industry.

Buoyed by the success of Padosan in 1967, Kishoreda appeared with Mahmood in many films. Most of these were as guests. In this film also he made a guest appearance.

RD, who was introduced by Mahmood with his maiden production Chhote Nawab in 1961, was at the helm of music direction. He had his share of usual songs but one song gets very high marks way and above all others. For me the duet by Lata & Kishoreda, Tum Meri Zindagi Mein, is an astonishingly simple and endearingly sweet song. Here is this and other songs from this film

(Dev) Chhupa Rustam (1973)

Vijay Anand had seven separate roles in making this movie. He produced and directed it under Navketan banner. He was a co-writer of the story and authored the screenplay. He also edited the film. He also had an important role in the film. Besides he wrote lyrics for three songs.

Vijay, who made several hit films to his credit, however was a complete miss here. Even though it was not a total disaster, there is not really much to write about the film. Only thing that saved the day for it was its music. Burmandas music as usual delivered. To his credit, with able assistance from his wife Meeraji, Burmanda came up with several fine songs. Dheere Se Jaana by Kishoreda was a chartbuster. But both solos by Asha and Lata are also equally good. Here are these and other songs from this fine album
