(Madhubala) Nishana (1950) Khwaja (Khawaja) Khursheed Anwar (see the picture shown), a brilliant and legendary music director of his generation was in the music industry for 43 years. Yet he composed music for only 29 films; 12 in India, and after migrating to Pakistan 17. Born into a rich family, he went on to acquire a Masters in philosophy in education. But his passion for music was irresistible. So he decided to forego a bright civil service carrier and instead sought fortunes in the area of music. He took lessons from eminent Ustads and became familiar with intricacies of classical music. With the credentials he sported, he had no difficulty in landing a job with All India Radio. No sooner than he started working there he was offered to work as a music director for the film “Kurmai” by A.R. Kardar in 1941. But not until he decided to migrate to Pakistan in 1952 his significant contributions to music began in earnest. Because of his classical training, his songs were usually rich in melody and pure in ragas. His musical emphasis was on heightening the impact of emotions expressed in lyrics. In collaboration with EMI of Pakistan, he recorded an unique collection of classical performances. This compilation, called “Raag Mala”, had a short introduction before the music demonstrating his command over classical ragas. He provided music for great Saigal’s last movie “Parwana (1947)”. It was the film “Intezar” in Pakistan, that gave a new lease of life to Madam Noor Jehan. He also was a writer and director. Anwar Saab had the distinction of working with many legendary names. He was a close friend of Faiz Ahmad Faiz. He worked with all of the big names from India as well as Pakistan. Here are the songs for which Anwar Saab has provided the music for. Unfortunately the quality of these songs is not uniform. These were a gift from a friend. My many thanks to her. Most of the songs have adequate quality except for the song "Koi Kisi Se Dil Na Lagaana" by Shamshad Begum. This sounds, at least in the beginning, really awful. Now for the songs ... Thanks for this album. The tracks are even labeled as they play in the WM player! nandi |

Thank you Sawarapriya for uploading this rare album. Thanks also for writing about Khursheed Anwar ji. I had heard several songs composed by him but hardly knew about him.
