(Hariharan) Colonial Cousins

Strictly speaking this is not a ghazal album. Since we are examining Hariharan's non-film work here, I thought of including this album here under this thread. This album is very unique. I have never experienced anything like this before. It is different but delightful. Here in these songs truly East meets West.

Colonial Cousins is a group of two consisting of Leslie Lewis and Hariharan. Leslie, a guitarist, worked with several Hindi film music directors like Kalyanji & Anandji, Laxmikant & Pyarelal, and R.D. Burman. In 1987 Lewis started his own company and started scoring musical scores comprising mostly jingles. In 1992 he invited Hariharan to sing a jingle for him. Waiting for the lyrics for the jingle, a restless Lewis started strumming his guitar and crooning something. Hariharan joined him with an alaap of his own and the idea of a fusion between Eastern music and Western music was born.

Both Lewis (Lezz) and Hariharan worked together to come up with the “Colonial Cousins” album. Lezz wrote scores for all the songs and arranged all the pieces with the help from Hari and Rajesh Johri. All of the English lyrics were penned by Lezz himself. Originally, only Hari was to be the singer but with Hari’s encouragement and coaching, Lezz joined him. Not until he cut the album Lezz was unaware of the talent he possessed for singing.

When the album was released it became a sensational best seller. It hit platinum in sales. The singing duo were invited to perform on MTV Unplugged, a London based television show. The duo and their album reaped many awards including MTV Asia Viewers' Choice Award and the US Billboard’s Viewers’ Award.

(Khosla) So Satguru Pyara Merei Naal Hai (Punjabi Album)

I don't speak or understand Punjabi but because Khosla was part of this album, I thought of investing in it. I was not disappointed. Here he teams up with Bhai Onkar Singh Ji and together they offer four bhajans in this album. Very beautiful to listen to and I am pretty sure they all are meaningful prayers too. Because of the lengths of these bhajans I am uploading them in two back-to-back posts ...
