(Mumtaz) Bandhe Haath (1973)

Amitabh was still struggling to get a foothold in the industry. In this film, he was paired with Mumtaz, who was already one of the top actresses in 1973. It turned out to be the only movie for which both these performers worked together.

I was reading recently where Amitabh fondly recalls of an incident while he was working with Mumtaz. Amitabh had a Fiat that he used to drive to work. Mumtaz had a Mercedes. Amitabh used to wonder how a Mercedes will be to drive. On this particular day, Mumtaz left early after finishing her shooting for that day. Amitabh has to stay back to complete his work. When he was done he couldn't find his car to drive back home. Then he saw Mumtaz's driver approach him. The driver handed over the keys of Mercedes to Amitabh. He told Amitabh that Mumtaz took his Fiat to drive back to her home and he was welcome to keep her Mercedes overnight. What a wonderful and gracious gesture. Simple things like these make lives so beautiful. Mumtaz scores huge points from me for showing such generosity of love and care towards her associates. Three cheers to you Mumu, wherever you are.

Here is a beautiful album from RD. It has several nice songs including Kishoreda's hit song, "Dekho Yeh Mere Bandhe Haath". The standout song of the album, Asha's solo, is "O Maanjhi". I will upload these songs in back-to-back two posts.

This movie was based on the hit Telugu film "Khaidi" that was released a year earlier and established actor Chiranjeevi as a bonafied star. It starts like Sylvester Stallone's "First Blood (1982)" but soon becomes a routine revenge drama. I will upload songs from the Telugu film following the Hindi songs in this thread.

Khaidi (1983) - A Telugu Film

This hit film established Chiranjeevi as a bonafied actor. It was the basis of the Hindi film "Qaidi (1984)". All songs from this film were huge hits. But the standout song is the duet "Raguluthondi". It was a huge hit when the film was released and rightfully so.

Here is a beautiful album from the hit combination of RD and Anand Bakshi Saab. To this add Rajesh Khanna. Now bring in Kishoreda. The result was always super hit songs. This movie was no different. I am posting songs from an original soundtrack album along with a couple of specials in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs...

(Rekha) Umrao Jaan (1981)

This one is one magnificent achievement for several people. These include Rekha, who played the title role brilliantly. The director of the film Muzaffar Ali. The music director Khayyam Saab. The lyricist Shahryar. The singer Asha Bhosle. Interestingly, only some of these were recognized come Awards time. Rekha won the National Best Actress Award even though she lost to Smita Patil for her performance in "Chakra" for the Filmfare Award. Ali Saab won as the Best Director from the Filmfare. So did Khayyam Saab as the Best Music Director. Neither the lyricist Shahryar nor Asha who breathed life into several mesmerizing songs were not even nominated.

In this film, Shaukat Kaifi (Mrs. Kaifi Azmi and the mother of Shabana Azmi) played Madam Khanum Jaan. Interestingly, in the 2006 version of this film that was made with Aishwarya Rai, Shabana played the Madam's role.
