(Zeenat) Qurbani (1980)

This movie was a sensation when it was released. It has all the "masala" ingredients that make a movie a success. Apart from the "oomph" supplied by Zeenat, its music was fabulous. Thanks to the song "Aap Jaisa Koi" by Nazia Hassan, crowds flocked to see the movie.

Nazia, born in Pakistan, was only 15 years when she sang the song “Aap Jaisa” in “Qurbani”. While shooting portions of the movie in England, the actor, producer, and director of the movie “Qurbani”, Feroz Khan, was introduced to Nazia by a mutual friend. Feroz gave her the opportunity to sing. The song became an overnight sensation and brought her recognition through out the world. She won the Best Female Singer Award for the song “Aap Jaisa”. (See the picture of Nazia below).

With her singer brother Zohaib Hussain she released several albums. She sold over 55 million albums all over the world in a short span of time. She retired early to focus on her personal life. She gave away all the monies earned in charity. Nazia lived a very simple life devoting most of her time for charities. She was only 35 when she passed away from the complications resulting from lung cancer.

Here are the songs from an original soundtrack album ..

(Asha) Kati Patang (1970)

Here is a beautiful album from RD. Shakti Samanta made this movie following the thundering success of "Aradhana (1969)". With some delightfully melodious songs, fine acting, enough drama that was engrossing, the movie became a huge hit. Interestingly, music for this movie was not even nominated for any awards even though it richly deserved. Bakshi Saab was nominated for the title song but he lost to Hasrat Jaipuri for "Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhaana" for "Andaaz". Asha Parekh took the Best Actress Award from Filmfare. Even though Kishoreda dominated the album with three beautiful solos and a duet, and a fine title song by Lata, to me the song of the album was Mukesh's "Jis Gali Mein". Such a great song. So much depth in the quivering voice of Mukesh Saab. A mellifluous composition of lovingly rich lyrics. It is too bad RD didn't give too many chances to Mukesh to sing some of the songs for his movies. If this is any indication, it seems like we missed out on some treasures.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains all the songs from the film from an original soundtrack album. The second post contains several specials.

Now for the details of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ...

Panchamda's favourite singer was Kishoreda and that's why he had not used any other male singer's voice more than Kishore Kumar. He had allways told that Kishoreda is the most versatile singer of all times. His dynamism in music punched with great melody, excellent rhythm and his capability of composing eastern and western type of songs was best justified by mahaguru Kishore Kumar. In 1986 filmfare interview,RD had commented that Kishoreda is also the most classically flexible singer of all times.Once in an old interview, the interviewer asked who is is favourite,Lata or Asha, but RD promptly said that his favourite is Kishoreda.Even today,Kishoreda's popularity is at the top and among his millions of fans, undoubtedly RD Burman will remain the all time biggest fan of Kishore Kumar.

(Mala) Bahurani (1963)

In 1954 a Telugu film named "Ardhaangi" starring Savitri & Nageshwara Rao was made. It was based on a Bengali novel, "Swayamsiddha". (Who is the author of this great novel?) Telugu movie was a great hit. This film "Bahurani" was based on the Telugu hit and turned out to be a sensitive story well told. The director of the movie T. Prakasha Rao made in 1958 "Amar Deep" with Vyjayanti Mala & Dev Anand. His biggest Hindi film hit was L.V. Prasad's "Hamrahi" made in 1963, the same year of this movie. Rao made many hit Tamil and Telugu films to his credit. When someone asked the secret of his success, he confided that it was Guru Dutt's "Pyaasa" made in 1957 that taught him several nuances of how to direct. He claimed that he saw that film nearly 40 times or so and each time found something interesting to learn. Amazing. Even more amazing is the fact that Guru Dutt, hero of Rao, is the hero of this fine film.

The music by C. Ramcandra is great. Sahir Saab wrote some rich lyrics. Both solos by Lata and the duet of Lata with Hemantda are melodious. Hemantda also has a "different" type of song in the solo "Eetal ke Ghal Mein Teetal". I am uploading songs from this film in three back-to-back posts. The first two posts have songs from the film. The third post contains some extended versions.

I will also upload the songs of the Telugu film immediately after the Hindi songs are done with. Now for the songs in the first post ...

This hit Telugu film was the basis for the Hindi film "Bahurani (1963)". It was based on the Bengali novel "Swayamsiddha". The Telugu film is still remembered for some of the best performances ever seen on the screen by its main artistes Savitri & Rao.

(Nutan) Milan (1967)

Like most of L.V. Prasad’s Hindi films, “Milan” was also based a hit Telugu film called “Mooga Manasulu (1964)”. The Telugu film was a super hit based on the strength of beautiful outdoor shooting on the banks of river Godavari, fine portrayals of the principal actors, and beautiful music. It was only a matter of time that it was to be made in Hindi.

The Hindi film was directed by the same director of the Telugu film, Adurti Subba Rao (see the attached photograph). He was a prominent director of Telugu films and made nearly 50 films including a few Hindi films. Rao, born in Andhra Pradesh, was a bright student and matriculated at a very young age from high school. He withdrew in the very first year of college against his parents’ wishes to pursue his dream to be an ace photographer. He decided the place to learn photography was Mumbai.

In Mumbai, he studied for three years to get a degree in photography at St. Xavier’s College. While pursuing his studies, he found a job with the Bombay Film Lab. He discontinued the school to take the fulltime employment to learn about processing and printing. He also learned to edit films. Uday Shankar, who was making “Kalpana”, was looking for someone to assist him. Rao grabbed the opportunity to become an assistant editor for the movie as well as its assistant director. During this time he got his first break to be an independent editor for a Tamil film. He moved to Madras.

His first few assignments in Madras were to write stories and dialogues for few films. He also managed to work as an editor, wrote lyrics for some songs, and tried his hand at camera. With all these activities he was getting around to know some important people in the industry and decided to launch his own film. His film “Amara Sandesham (1954)” was a flop but helped him establish more contacts. It was Annapoorna Films managing partner Madhusudan Rao who signed him for a multi film contract. For that banner, Rao directed several hit films.

After having established himself by earning a good name in the industry, he restarted his company to make series of movies, mostly hits. The Telugu film “Mooga Manasulu” on which “Milan” was based was one of them.

For this film, Prasad parted companies with the music director duo Shankar & Jaikishan who provided hit music for several of his earlier movies. Prasad decided to go this time with Laxmikant & Pyarelal who worked for a string of successful movies for him starting with this one. The music of the film was the biggest draw. Many believe that the movie also gave Mukesh a second lease of life as a singer because he was going through a lean period prior to this film. It was his songs that lifted the movie to a newer and higher level.

The song “Saawan Ka Mahina” is an example of the film craft at its best. So many things came together to make this an unforgettable audio visual experience in the film. The contrasting images of Nutan and Sunil Dutt, one educated and sophisticated, the other uneducated and a simple person, both performing the song as one teaches the other on how to sing is a scene to behold. The camera shows sun and shade and later as the night falls everything seem to bask in the glorious moonlight. In the stillness of the night, as the boat travels through the water breaking the silence with ripples with lingering moonlight reflection adding to the beautiful mood.

The movie grabbed several Filmfare awards. Nutan won as the Best Actress. Jamuna who had an important role in the film walked away with the Best Supporting Actress Award. For the magnificent music they composed, Laxmikant & Pyarelal won the Best Music Director Award. Sunil lost to Dilip for his portrayal in “Ram Aur Shyam”.

I am uploading songs of this film from an original soundtrack album in two back-to-back posts. I will also upload songs from the Telugu film in this section, immediately following the Hindi songs.

Now for a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves …

Mooga Manasulu (1964) - A Telugu Film

This hit Telugu film was the basis of the Hindi hit "Milan (1967)". The Telugu film, though it was shot in Balck & White, was exquisitely photographed on the shores of the great Godavari river. Adding to this breathtakingly scenic beauty were the beautiful portrayals by the leading pair Savitri & Nageshwara Rao and some inspired music by Mahadevan, all of this culminated into making of a classic.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here is a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ...
