(Vyjayanti) College Girl (1960)

Until the untimely demise of Shailendra from the tandem writing team of Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri for the music composer team Shankar & Jaikishan, no one else wrote lyrics except on two occasions. The first exception occurred in S&J's stunningly debut album, "Barsaat (1949)", for which the song "Hawa Mein Udta Jaaye" was written by Ramesh Shastri. The next exception occurred with this album, "College Girl". For this film all of the lyrics were written by Rajinder Krishan. I don't know how this has happened. When B.R. Chopra was making "Naya Daur (1957)" he signed initially Shankar & Jaikishan to provide the music. BR wanted to utilize the services of Sahir Ludhianvi to write the lyrics. But S&J insisted that they would like to stick with their team Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri. BR decided not to go along with that request and eventually the award winning music for "Naya Daur" was composed by O.P. Nayyar.

I am uploading all these songs in two back-to-back posts. The first post has songs from the film. The second post has several extended versions.

Now for a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ...

(Waheeda) Khamoshi (1969)

Here is one of my favorite films. It is probably one of the finest movies ever made in Hindi. With a great performance by Waheeda and a haunting score by Hemantda, the movie is close to a masterpiece in filmmaking. Many of the songs from this movie just linger on and on even after many listenings.

Gulzarji wrote some outstanding lyrics for the film. It has only five songs but all of them are very beautiful. Particularly, Hemantda's song "Tum Pukar Lo" with the melancholic voice that resonates with deep feelings gives one a shatteringly helpless experience. In the movie this was filmed on Dharmendra. It reminds another outstanding song Hemantda sang for Dharmendra in “Anupama (1966)”, “Ya Dil Ki Suno”, also composed by Hemantda. Then there is Kishoreda's beautiful song "Woh Shaam Kuchh Ajeeb Thi". This and Hemantda's songs are my personal favorites from this movie. Also, Lataji's number, "Humne Dekha Hai" is not far behind these songs.

This movie originally was made in Bengali. "Deep Jwele Jai", amde in 1959, starred Suchitra Sen in the lead and had the music composed by Hemantda. That movie is now considered a classic had Hemantda's song from the movie "Ei Raat Tomar Amar" is considered as one of the greatest romantic songs in Bengali. This is the same tune Hemantda used for the Hindi version of the song, "Tum Pukar Lo".

Incidentally, this film also was made in Telugu as "Chivaraku Migiledi". This 1961 film starred the greatest Telugu film actress Savitri, who gave performance of her lifetime. I will upload songs from this film in this section following the Hindi songs.

There was another remake of this film released in 2005. It was called "Kyon Ki". Karishma Kapoor reprised the role played by Suchitra Sen, Savitri, and Waheeda in the different languages.

Sometime back there were plans to make this film in English. It was to star Jennifer Aniston, who became popular starring in a TV sitcom called "Friends".

I am posting the songs of "Khamoshi" in two back-to-back postings. The first post has all the songs from an original soundtrack album. The second post has several specials.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves from the first post ...

Concluding Songs from "Khamoshi (1969)" ...

I am including some specials in this post. I am uploading here a version song of "Tum Pukaar Lo" by Abhijeet and of the same songs with an introduction by Manna Dey. This was taken from the album "Legends: Hemant Kumar - The Singer-Composer (CD 4)". I am also including two separate version song of "Woh Shaam" one by Amit Kumar and ther by Lata. Lata's song was originally shared with us by our fellow member, exon, but the one I am uploading here is at a higher bit rate that I found in one of the CD collections.

Here are these songs ...

Chivaraku Migiledi (1960) - A Telugu Film

This movie is the Telugu version of "Khamoshi" and preceded the Hindi version by nine years. However, the Telugu version was based on the original Bengali version "Deep Jwele Jai”. I have seen this Telugu version few years ago. Savitri, one of the greatest actresses of our time, gave a stunningly memorable performance in this movie. The pathos, the silent suffering, the conflict between love and care, she exhibited whole gamut of emotions like a fluently lucid poem. I have never seen any such powerful performance in my lifetime. It was a crowing achievement of Savitri’s great career that in real life unfortunately and undeservingly was filled with much tragedy.

The Telugu version has six songs. Two of them, both sung by the great Ghantasala, are based on the Bengali songs. I believe rest of them are all original to the Telugu movie. Of these originals I love the song performed by M.S. Rama Rao.

I came across on the YouTube this video clip where the great Telugu actor A. Nageshwara Rao paying tribute to the late Savitri. I am not sure what the exact occasion was. These are the same actors who paid little sympathy when she was in desperate need for help and her life was in shambles. Now here they are showering praises on how great an actress Savitri really was. In this glowing tribute, however, Rao talks about Savitiri in general and her performance in "Chivaraku Migiledi" in particular. He compares and contrasts her performance with that of Waheeda Rehman (Hind version) and Suchitra Sen (Bengali version). The video has clippings from these three movies interspersed showing how these three great actresses enacted the same scene. The video can be seen at the pointer below …

(Zeenat) Dostana (1980)

This Raj Khosla-directed movie became a hit but in my opinion the movie was very pale compared to his other directorial efforts. Even the songs and picturizations of them for which Khosla is famous for were just about average even though the title song and the duet of Asha and Kishoreda became very popular.

Here are the songs from an original soundtrack album ...
