(Mumtaz) Sikandar-E-Azam (1965)

24 years earlier, in 1941, the great Sohrab Modi produced, directed, and acted in a movie called "Sikandar". In that movie he played Porus (Purshottam) whereas the young Prithviraj Kapoor played Sikandar. Now in this movie on the same subject, Prithviraj gets to play from the opposite side of the table, this time as Porus. Sikandar is now Dara Singh.

This album has some nice songs composed by Hansraj Behl. Here is a description of these and the songs themselves ...

SP, thanks for the un-truncated version of the Lata song "O mere yaar o dildaar" from "Sikandar-e-Azam. This is a particular favorite of mine that I heard once approximately 30 years back when I saw the film on Doordarshan. It stuck in my head and I was not able to find it for years till the DVD was released. And while the song was there, the beginning and end were a bit truncated in my copy. It was only a few seconds, so it was okay. Now I am happy to have an even more pristine version.
But that apart, between this song and of course the beautiful Rafi solo, the soundtrack stands out. The Asha solo is average (bordering on above average perhaps :-) )
I had not heard the Mahendra Kapoor solo or the Asha/Usha duet before. So thanks for those.

Since you mentioned the older Sohrab Mody film "Sikandar", I wanted to add that in this version, the young Prithviraj Kapoor is incredibly dapper and looks almost exactly like Shashi Kapoor. I remember seeing a scene from the film and thought it was Shashi, till I saw a young Sohrab Mody and realized my mistake.

Unfortunately I haven't seen either one of the movies. But one thing is for sure. Dara Singh has definitely graduated with this movie from B movies to A. Introduced in "King Kong" based on his physique, he made series of movies that didn't require too much for him to do except fight. But now he teamed up here with the great Prithviraj, he earned instant credibility and suddenly people took notice of him. It once again goes to show that sometimes it is not who you are or what you are but whom are you associated with.

About Aankh Michouli (1962)...


Not sure if any one noticed this or not, but this was probably one of the last few songs Geeta ji sang for composer Chitragupt ji. This MD holds the record of composing the maximum number of songs for Geeta ji, close to a hundred. She sang for him as early as in 1947 for a fantasy film Jaadui Rattan. Another note about Mala Sinha. Mala Sinha (real name Alda) hailing from Nepal was a struggling actress in Hindi films. Geeta ji met her and was impressed by her. It was Geeta ji who recommended Mala for the role of Meena in Pyaasa (1957). (That was after Guru Dutt dropping Madhubala and Nargis which were original cast.) Is this movie based on Sharat Chandra's story? I am not certain. In early 50's a Telugu film called "Deeksha" was made based on Sharat's novel. I believe this film also was based on that Telugu film.

If not for anything else, this film will be remembered as the last film in which Asha and OP worked together. It is a pity the association that gave so many unforgettable songs together have to end their relationship this abruptly. But even then the pair left with a bang ...

Asha was bestowed with numerous awards, including the Filmfare Award as the Best Singer for the song "Chain Se Hum". Interestingly in the end the song was not even included in the movie.

The album, not unusually for a typical OP's album, is all Asha. Out of seven songs she has six solos. The other is a brief snippet by Rafi Saab. Almost every song by Asha is a real beauty. I am uploading all these songs from the original soundtrack album below.

(Sadhana) Ulfat Ki Nayee Manzilen (1994)

Finally we are here, coming to an end of songs from Sadhana's movie albums. It was a beautiful ride, as beautiful as Sadhana herself, who stormed our lives with her adult debut movie "Love in Simla (1960)". She was in several popular movies and enjoyed great success as an actress. Unfortunately her health started failing in later years of her professional career and this did reflect in her looks in these movies. It was painstaking to see her suffer this way.

This was the last movie of Sadhana that was released. Apparently it was under production for a long time and for some reason or other its release was delayed. The year of release is still in question. But songs from this album are absolutely beautiful. Except for "Chhota Sa Sansaar", every song from this album for me is just beautiful. Both solos by Lata are lovely. The duet by Lata and Rafi Saab is very enjoyable. We get to hear a solo from Yesudas, a great song, it is a ghazal. In his engrossing voice this ghazal takes its own beauty.

(Saira) Aakhri Daao (1975)

It seems like only yesterday Saira was introduced to the film world in 1961 in that massive hit "Junglee". Her slim figure, her vulnerable looks, and her portrayal of innocence at once made her so likable. But time has rolled on. It is now 14 years later. 1975. The years have taken a toll on her slim looks. That vulnerability she could show off as an actress completely disappeared. The innocence that lit her face in an unusual glow in "Junglee" now seems like has been replaced with indifference to the proceedings. She almost looked disinterested in the role she was playing. I guess time plays havoc with many peoples lives if they are not careful about it ...
