Yes, Sunil Dutt's character does have a deformity in his hand in "Khaandaan". The Tamil film with the same story is called "Bhaaga pirivinai" starred Sivaji Ganeshan in the role with Saroja Devi. The tamil film has the lovely song "Thangathhile oru kurai irundhaalum tharathhinil kuraivundhoDo" Nice lyrics by Kannadasan and sung beautifully by P Susheela. The Hindi equivalent "Tumhi meri mandir tumhi meri pooja" is a nice song, but it does not even come close to capturing the beauty of the Tamil equivalent. I wonder what the Telugu equivalent is. (BTW, the Tamil lyrics approximately translate into "If there is a flaw in the gold, it does not diminish its quality") SB, the song is "Melimi Bangaru Melika Tirigina" which almost has the same meaning. I will upload songs of the correct film following this message. -S |

(Rekha) Namak Haraam (1973)
This movie was directed by Hrishida. Even though story is credited to Gulzar, it was an adaptation of the famous English movie called "Becket" starring Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole. Rajesh plays the role of Burton and Amitabh plays the role of O'Toole. The English movie was based on a historical fact and was a period drama. The Hindi version was set in the modern times. But even before the Hindi version came, there was a movie made in Telugu in mid-60s called "Praana Snehitulu" with A. Nageshwara Rao and Jaggayya with almost the same backdrop as that of the Hindi version. This was the second time Rajesh and Amitabh acted together for a Hrishida film. The other movie was "Anand". In that movie Amitabh was relatively new and eventhough gave a fine, restrained and understated performance, it was Rajesh Khanna's movie all the way. This time around many people were of the opinion that apparently the tables turned. Most of the critics throught that Amitabh's overpowering performance just overshadowed that of Rajesh. After this movie Amitabh's fortunes started climbing up while Rajesh's started declining. This one is a beauty as far as R.D. Burman's music is concerned. Kishoreda has four solos in it. Out of these three are just outstanding. Here are the songs from this album ... Attached image(s) |

(Zeenat) Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978)
This was a much hyped movie before it was released. So many people thought it will be another artistic triumph for Raj Kapoor. But all the good intentions of a noble plot were gone astray because Raj was more interested in exposing Zeenat's anatomy than develop the story deftly. Interestingly many thought this story represented Lataji's own life in some respects. The parallel here is that Lata who is not considered to be pretty but has such mesmerizingly sweet voice. But many many years before this, B. Vithalachary, a film producer and director from south made a movie that was almost similar in theme. He made this movie in 1954 in both Kannada and Telugu. The name of the Telugu version was called "Kanya Daanam". The plot revolves around a lady who is not pretty to look at and how her parents manage to get her married by trickery with dire consequences only to come to a closure in the end amicably. Not that different from Raj's own movie. But one thing is sure. This movie has some of the most outstanding music ever composed by Laxmikant & Pyarelal. And the title song sung by Lataji is a stunner. It echoes deeply through the chambers of your heart making such an indelible impression on the listener. But even other songs in this movie are excellent as well. For example, Mukesh’s “Chanchal Sheetal” is real cool. It is also picturized beautifully in the film. Lata’s “Bhor Bhaye” is a lovely number with some beautiful music at the trail end of the song. Other songs also follow the same pattern. For their magnificently melodious work, Laxmikant & Pyarelal got the best music director award for that year. This one was definitely worth recognizing and their efforts richly deserved it. Because of the number of songs and their length, I am uploading these in two posts. I am also including here a 30 second snippet from Randhir Kapoor, Raj's son. This one appears in the album "Legends: Raj Kapoor - The Showman (CD5)". I edited out the song by keeping only Randhir’s words. Interestingly he refers to his dad as "Mr. Raj Kapoor" and speaks in English. Now for a description of the songs and the songs in this first post ... Attached image(s) |
