QUOTE(sangeetbhakt @ Apr 17 2010, 08:47 AM) *

Quite the array of singers in this album - Asha, Lata, Kishore, Rafi, Hemant Kumar, Bhupinder and of
course Pancham himself.

BTW, the female voice in the Hemant version of "Aaja mere pyaar aaja" is not Asha (I should sure hope not,
since it is IMO the single irritating feature of an otherwise nice song - what an interesting composition). Whilethe HFGK says that it is just "bachhi ka swar", I have it somewhere in my notes that it is Jayashree
Shivram. If it is her, she sang under RDB's music direction years later - the title song for the film "Raama o
raama". She also sang a song in the film "Jai shiv shankar". Both are duets with Amit Kumar.
Sadly, she did not get better with time IMHO.
I would love to find a smooth way to cut out her voice from this Hemant Kumar song and just listen to him.

Oh btw, that adds yet another singer's name to the list of singers in this film.

I knew that Asha's wasn't the right name to give credit to this song. I went ahead and did anyway. Thanks for straightening this out. I have changed my table to give proper credit to Jayshree.

I took a cue form your suggestion and went ahead and tried to eliminate intervening humming by Jayshree Shivram from Hemanta's song. I am fairly successful, even tough I must admit that I am an amateur at this. I am uploading this song here ...

Cheers,
S

(Asha) Upkar (1967)

Manoj started his "Bharat" persona when he played the role of Bhagat Singh in "Shaheed" in 1965. He continued that theme and patriotism as the core of most of his movies that came after "Shaheed". In so much so, that even though some of the movies, including this one, were very good it became very monotonous and many felt that it was an overkill.

"Upkar"came just after the Indo-Pakistan war of 1966. Lal Bahadur Shastry, who was prime minister during the war time, gave the Nation a slogan to hang on to in the war times, "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan". Basically this slogan was the inspiration for this movie. Manoj played several roles in bringing out this fine movie. He wrote the story, dialogues, produced, directed, and acted in the movie. Even though the movie was an occasional drag and has a feel of exploitation, overall it was very good. This was because it has some fine acting and great songs.

This was the movie in which Pran, one of our great actors, was given a role against the type he regularly played. As a character actor in the role of a wounded soldier, Pran gave a brilliant performance. This opened up a new lease for him as an actor and he continued to dominate the movie field in many such roles for next 20 plus years. Eventhough Pran was nominated for the Best Supporting actor award for his role in this film, he lost out to Ashok Kumar in "Meherban".

Coming to the songs, there are two songs that are on my all time favorite list. One of them is Mannada's "Kasme Vaade Pyaar Wafa". When you hear this song in a lonely and a quiet evening, the listening experience moves you to tears. Something there in Manna's voice that goes deep into the heart cavities and lingers solemnly for a long time. The other favorite of mine is Mahendra's "Mere Desh Ki Dharti". A great bubbly song that is successful in arousing patriotic thoughts in you.

The movie bagged several Filmfare awards. It won for the producer Manoj, the Best Film award. It also won the Best Director award for Manoj. For the Best Story, the award also went to Manoj. Finally, Manoj also won the fourth Filmfare award for the Best Dialogues. He lost the Best Actor award to Dilip for his dual role in "Ram Aur Shyam". Mahendra was nominated for the Best Playback Singer award but he lost to himself for the song he sang in the film "Humraaz", "Neele Gagan Ke Tale". However, Gulshan Bawra did win as the Best Lyricist for "Mere Desh Ki Dharti" song. Kalyanji & Anandji were nominated in the Best Music award category but lost to Laxmikant & Pyarel for "Milan".

The film won the National Award as the second best picture. Mahendra won the National Best Playback Singer award for "Mere Desh Ki Dharti" song.

I will upload these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...

(Mumtaz) Khandan (1965)

This movie was based on a Tamil hit. It was also made into Telugu in 1962 as "Atma Bandhuvu". The Telugu film was also a hit. "Khandan" also was a huge hit, thanks to good performances and some fine music by Ravi. Every song became a huge hit. Ravi grabbed a Filmfare award as Best Music Director for his efforts. The movie also won for Sunil Dutt a Best Actor award. Rajinder Krishan was chosen as the Best Lyricist for the song "Tumhi Mere Mandir". Lata was adjudged the Best Playback Singer for the same song.

I will upload songs of this film in two back-to-back posts. I will upload songs from the Telugu movie in this same sectionafter I am done uploading the Hindi songs.

Here is the first set of songs ...

SP, there seems to be something wrong with the info. I have seen 'Atma Bandhuvu' when I was a kid and remember the story. I have seen the story of 'Khandaan' in wikipedia and they bear no resemblance to each other. I also remember a telugu movie with the same story as 'Khandaan' but unfortunately, am unable to remember the name.

BTW, I think 'Atma Bandhuvu' is made in hindi as 'Meherbaan' in the mid sixties.

You may be right about this Madhu. I could easily be wrong. I will leave it alone becuase there is no rush here to download these songs anyway. By the way could it be "Kalasi Unte Kaladu Sukham" by any chance? Cheers. -S

Kishor

Yes, Sunil Dutt's character does have a deformity in his hand in "Khaandaan". The Tamil film
with the same story is called "Bhaaga pirivinai" starred Sivaji Ganeshan in the role with Saroja Devi.
The tamil film has the lovely song "Thangathhile oru kurai irundhaalum tharathhinil kuraivundhoDo"
Nice lyrics by Kannadasan and sung beautifully by P Susheela.
The Hindi equivalent "Tumhi meri mandir tumhi meri pooja" is a nice song, but it
does not even come close to capturing the beauty of the Tamil equivalent. I wonder what the Telugu
equivalent is.
(BTW, the Tamil lyrics approximately translate into "If there is a flaw in the gold, it does not diminish
its quality")

SB, the song is "Melimi Bangaru Melika Tirigina" which almost has the same meaning. I will upload songs of the correct film following this message. -S
