Teesri Manzil Rafi song Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin was inspired by this Nepali duet of Aruna Lama and Jitendra Bardewa, sung when I was a kid. It was converted from a low resolution RAM file. That is why the sound is not that great. The original song has a much faster tempo than the RDB version.

Hope you enjoy it.

I heard an interview which said that when SHAMMI KAPOOR heard this tune in the recording room he started singing this version and taunted RBD for copying.

i guess it was ASHA's interview ,she wanted to say that heroes of those days had good knowledge abt music.

I NEVER HEARD AN ANGEL SINGING,YES I HEARD MOHAMMED RAFI SAHAB.

I LOVE THEE RAFI SAHAB

Thanks Binod. Many years ago on a DD TV program Danny had sung a song with Asha - Aage aage do paike... It was similar to Sang mare nikle the saajan from Phir Wohi Raat.
Do you have that song too?

Thanks for the info and the query but I do not have the song. Nor do I have many Nepali songs.

Binod Bhai...I consider Narayan Gopal as the greatest singer of Nepal. Do you want to listen to his songs?

I fully agree with you Mahesh Bhai. Yes I do want to listen to him. Narayan Gopal like Rafi was a very simple and humble man. But unlike Rafi he never cared for his voice. In the good old 1960s during the heydays of the Hippie movement I used to see him smoking 'grass' in the interludes of bhajan sessions in temples at Kathmandu in the night when he would be accompanying other up and coming bhajan singers on the tabla. His control over the voice, his being in 'sur', and his range were simply fantastic despite his careless approach to music. His voice reminded me of a combination of Talat and Hemant Kumar with an incredible range giving it a completely different dimension. The most similar singer to him that I know of in the subcontinent was the Nazrul singer Manabendra Mukherjee/Mukhopadya from West Bengal.

Another great singer that Narayan Gopal eventually replaced is still living -- Prem Dhoj Pradhan. Prem Dhoj has a Rafisque voice. Though the range was not too great, his voice was crystal clear and sometimes sounded even better than Rafi's. Unfortunately, he did not have much control over his voice and sometimes did not sound so 'surila.'[But of course, no one, including even the great Lata, can ever hope to approach the 'surilapan' of Rafi. I remember Lata used to praise Rafi calling him very 'surila.' Now I know why now that I have heard her sing two of Rafi's songs where there are portions of the songs where she is quite flat.]. While both Prem Dhoj and Narayan Gopal composed a lot of their songs, Narayan Gopal got great music composers like Ambar Gurung, Gopal Yonzon, and Nati Kazi do the tune smithing for him. That is why his songs had that much richness and allowed him to soar to such dizzying heights. While occasionally, I do find both Prem Dhoj's and the great Rafi's voice effeminate but no where near as much as Sonu Nigam's, Narayan Gopal's voice has always been manly like Hemant 's or Manabendra's. While Narayan Gopal used the harmonium, Prem Dhoj played the guitar as the accompaniment.

While I was getting money from home to fund the best private tuition in maths in my science college in order to enable me to get into engineering college, I would mostly squander the money in buying expensive tickets to see these artists perform live on the stage. It is a wonder that eventually I did become an engineer against all odds.

I am sure this must be stale news to you and boring but I have attempted to make it interesting by interjecting myself into the story and giving my opinions to give it a personal touch -- not that I am such an interesting person. Nevertheless, I do believe that there are some here in this HF who could be interested such as Prince Ali but did not grow up in the era that I did with Nepali music.

There is a whole galaxy of great male singers in Nepal. Bachu Kailash and Ambar Gurung go at par with the above two. The second tier of good male singers were Deep Shrestha, Prakash Shrestha, Yogesh Baidhya, all of whom towered over Udit Narayan who was just an awe-strucken fledgeling at that time. I have heard Udit sing in a private room without the use of a microphone when I was just married in 1977.

I can talk about such matters in greater detail in future posts if anyone is interested. But again please do exercise some patience since I am extremely busy till mid April. I could also talk about Indian and Pakistani singers who sang Nepali songs and Nepali singers who sang Indian songs later on.

So much for now.

Binod.

Hi Guys, I have found this thread about discussion on Nepali songs. I have today uploaded sample clips of 3 songs of Geetaji sung for a Nepali film Maitighar (1966) here

http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?show...c=32862&hl=

All are in 128 KBPS and mp3 format.

These dont seem to be full songs to me. Any one having full songs, please upload the same.

(1) Keko Khanu Keko Launu - Aruna Lama, Geeta Dutt (01:53 min)

(2) Salloma Bhanu Sallo Ho - Aruna Lama, Geeta Dutt (00:56 min)

(3) Sanu Maya Mero Mayalai - Aruna Lama, Geeta Dutt (01:21 min)

Thanks so much in advance

Best Regards
Parag

No Parag, you must thank Sangeet and not me. Although I did watch the movie when it was just released which is some zillion years ago, I sadly do not have the memory of the elephant. So I do not know whether the songs are complete or not. But I would hazard to guess that they are not compelete. Anyway these songs were the most trivial ones in the movie. I did not even know that the famous Geeta Dutt sang in the movie. No wonder, her voice is so much dominated by Aruna Lama despite her star stature. Asha, however, stole the show as always.

In fact, Asha has been the most dominant Indian singer in Nepali songs as her voice has that sex appeal loved by Nepali youths, while Lata has failed to make any headway in the Nepali music scene as with any of the major male singers of India. Lata must have sung only a couple of songs. Despite the fact the field was wide open in Nepal for acclaimed female singers like her to lead the way she failed miserably much to the disappointment of her Nepali fans. One of the songs I remember had the same lyrics as that of a popular song by Bachchu Kailash one of the top baritone male singers of Nepal. While his song was a duo with another male singer, it was really a spirited one with a catchy fast tempo and his voice was really good. Lata came with a tune that was both slow and sad. While her voice was tuning-fork clear, she sounded like a preteen bhajan singer. Comparisons were inevitable and the damage was done. I do not think she sang any more songs after that. Nepalis have always wanted a sexy female voice whereas hers was like a kid performing in a school program and it was a strategic blunder to try and take one of the male supremos of Nepali music. (I think that had Geeta attempted entering the Nepali music field she would have been a superstar but perhaps she was already half-hearted toward her career owing to her family problems by the time Maiti Ghar came her way). Whereas the HFM was and still is a female dominated one, the male singers in Nepal have been by leaps and bounds above their female counterparts. Although Asha made it into the Nepali scene she is still not considered to be as popular as the Nepali male singers. The high quality of the male singers speaks out for itself on two counts:

1) no Indian male singer has made any substantial inroads into Nepali music (while most HFM male stalwarts did not even make an attempt to enter the Nepali music market), whereas

2) Udit Narayan a struggling mediocre singer in Nepal rose to dizzing heights in Bombay, despite the fact that he was an outsider who could not pull any strings.

Going back to Maitighar:

I am still looking for the following Maiti Ghar songs:

1. Na Mana Laaj Yestari Ki Jhoom Chha Zindagi Mero - Asha Bhonsle & Prem Dhoj Pradhan

2. Zindagi Layi Jeet Le Hoina Harale Swagat Gari - Manna De.

3. Kaalai Kurtai Le Chha Maine Jagir Khaayaa - CP Lohani (husband of Mala Sinha).

Thanks.

Binod.

Sorry Sangeet and Binod for overlooking, I have corrected my posts.
Please forgive.

Binod, as you rightly said by 1966 Geetaji was already downhill on the personal and health front ..Once again as all of her fans feel, if she had little more patience, life would have been so different for her and for her fans..
