Hmmm...I spoke to Usha-ji early September, 2003. Yup, I spoke with Lata-ji too. (that was some experience!) Nah..I didn't call Asha-ji...besides, Lata-ji told me she wasen't there in the house anyways. I also spoke only for a little while with Meena-ji, while Usha-ji was coming, and talked to Usha-ji, while Lata-ji was filling her tea cup and coming. Then I talked to Lata-ji for about 10-15 min.

Well..when I called the great diva, Meena-ji first picked up, and I asked for Lata-ji, and she handed the phone to Usha-ji...who then said Lata-ji had just got up and getting her tea (11am in india, i think), and to call back after a while..which is when i said that i like her songs a lot to..especially the song "chatri na khol"...she said...yes..she sort of remembers the song..and...it was fun to do it with kishore-da..as always.

Then I called back after a while (14 min to be exact)..and then Usha-ji picked up again...and then i asked for Lata-ji..and then Lata-ji was there...on the phone..asked my name...location..and time at the location..and what I do...i said 1:40am at Toronto..engineering student...and she asked what I was doing up so late, instead of studying or sleeping??!! I said something like wanting to talk to her cause I absolutely love her songs..she said "thank u ji"..I then asked how her health was now...she said "thik hain".

And then I told her how I got into listening to her song...through the Shraddhanjali albums..to which she said..that is exactly the purpose of these albums...to get young minds into indian music and culture and re-introduce them to these singers of yesteryears. (i told her how i used to only listen to english song till 12th std...and then the sudden change after listening to her that album).

Then i told her about this CD of hers that I bought in Calcutta..."Enchanting Hour with Lata, Vol 1"..and the first song in the CD "Jind Le Gaya, film: Aap Ke Saath", was sung by Anuradha Paudwal, but was included in the CD. She said that just yesterday she came to know about that..and said "yeh T-Series log aise hi karte hain, ab main kya karoon". {the CD is a T-Series CD}

Hmmm.....ya...and then I told her that I loved her Aandhi songs..her song "Rajnigandha Phool Tumhare"...and "Tum Mujhe Yun Bhoola Na Paaoge"..and her classical numbers..and the way she sings without letting us hear her "breathing sounds"..which I thought was absolutely fantastic and i didn't understand how she could do it and why no one else pays attention to their breathing sounds...and she said "thank you ji"..and said..."kafi galtiyan hain yeh sab gaane main".

And then I said...I only began listening to hindi songs..and have a long long way to go..and that if i called her a year later, i would have tons of more songs to thank her for...and she again said "thank you ji"

Ohh.ya..somewhere in the middle of that...i told her that I also loved her bengali songs a lot (and that i am a bengali)..and the way her pronounciation was just like a bengali and like her other language songs too (marathi ones). And I also asked if Asha-ji was there...she said she lives in another apartment...and wasen't at home.

Hmmm...yup...that's it...!

The best part was her "thank you ji"...the way she said it..was just so jolly...almost like the way a child would say it. Also...personal observation, her voice sounded the youngest among the sisters.

Do note that when I called her at that time.....I was still very new to HFM...didn't know anything at that time...not that I do now...but I was really foolish then.
