This popular movie was immensely helped by its music. Kalyanji & Anandji were at the helm of music direction. Interestingly, Laxmikant & Pyarelal who have been entrenched firmly as music directors by this time were assistant music directors to this film.

Vijay Bhatt who made the great musical masterpiece "Baiju Bawra" in 1952 directed this film. The film was nominated for several Filmfare Awards but managed to win one, for the Best Picture.

(Javed Akhtar) Prem (1995)

With the success of “Mr. India” in 1987, Boney Kapoor launched two more vehicles with the team of “India”, Javed Akhtar as the writer, Laxmikant & Pyarelal as the music directors, and Shekhar Kapur as the director. These were “Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja” and “Prem”. Anil Kapoor was the co-producer for both films. “Prem” was headed by Anil’s younger brother Sanjay as a newcomer and Tabu, who appeared in smaller roles in a couple of films, as the leading lady. More than half way through these movies, Shekhar Kapur developed differences with the producers. He decided to abandon both the projects. Satish Kaushik was brought in to finish both the films. “Roop” was released in 1993 and was a flop. “Prem” was released in 1995 and proved to be flop as well.

“Prem” was lushly photographed and has beautiful background music and several nice songs. I am uploading these in three back-to-back posts. Here are the songs in the first post…

(Majrooh) Dilli ka Thug (1958)

Ravi does it again. This album has some catchy songs. Some zany songs like "C-A-T Cat Maani Billi" and "Hum Toh Mohabbat Karega". There is Geetaji's memorable cabaret number "O Baabu O Laala". There is so much oomph in this song that you just can't help but fall in love with such velvety voice that quivers lifting ones mood. Then there is that great number by Asha, "Ye Bahaar Ye Sama". There is also the unforgettable duet of Asha and Kishore, "Ye Raatein Ye Mausam". I am uploading these and other songs from this album in the first post. In the second post I am uploading several instrumentals.

The song Tera Yoon Nazar Chura Ke is actually from the movie Bombay Ka Chor (1962). The song was recorded earlier for Dilli Ka Thug but was shelved and used later for BKC.

(Shakeel) Gunga Jumna (1961)

In a book on Mehboob Khan, its author tells how "Gunga Jumna" movie came about. Mehboobji decided to remake his previous acclaimed work "Aurat (1941)." This was to be the movie "Mother India (1957)." Dilipji, who was a good friend of Mehboob Khan, collaborated with him by making suggestions on how the picture and some of its characters, especially that of Birju, should be developed. Dilipji was convinced that he will be playing that role. But Mehboob Saab had other plans. After casting Nargis as mother, he decided to offer the role of Birju to Sunil Dutt. Dilipji was stunned with this unexpected development. But Mehboob Saab’s reasoning was that he couldn't imagine Dilip playing Nargis's son.

Dilipji was so upset with Mehboob Saab that he was not even in talking terms with him while "Mother India" was getting ready. Eventually “Mother India” was released and was both a commercial as well as artistic triumph for Mehboob Saab.

During this time Dilipji started looking to come up with a story that countered "Mother India." Finally he decided to write and develop himself the story of "Gunga Jumna". Next he decided to produce the movie himself. Because of this there are so many shades of similarities between "Mother India" and "Gunga Jumna." Both deal with injustices done to a family by a zamindar. Both films have two brothers one eventually becoming an outlaw and the other who upholds the law. When "Gunga Jumna" was released, it was also a huge commercial success. Instead of Dilipji running away with all the honors, it turned out that it was Vyjayanti Mala's performance that won critical acclaim. She won Filmfare's Best Actress performance for her role in the film. The movie's excellent photography also won a Filmfare Award and so did the dialogue writer.

After many years, Yash Chopra made this same story (a mixture of "Mother India" and "Gunga Jumna") in a modern setting as "Deewar (1975)." This movie also had the similar theme, injustices done by a mill owner to its labor force, a devoted mother raising two sons one of whom turns out "bad" and the other becomes a police officer who is bent on upholding the law. This movie catapulted Amitabh Bachchan to undeniable stardom.

For “Gunga Jumna” Naushadji's music again was on the mark. All songs became huge hits. I am uploading these in two back-to-back posts starting in the next post…
