(Majrooh) Chalti ka Naam Gaadi (1958)

I do not understand how the tax related economics work but apparently Kishoreda to avoid huge amounts he owed in income taxes made a couple of movies, one in Bengali and the other in Hindi, hoping that they will flop. The Bengali version, “Lookochuri”, starring Kishoreda opposite Mala Sinha with Hemantda’s music made in 1958, instead clicked in a big way and became a hit. He also made in the same year, 1958, the Hindi film, “Chalti ka Naam Gaadi”. As luck would have it, the Hindi film also was a huge hit.

A disgusted Kishoreda ceded all his rights to the movie, “Gaadi”, by gifting them to his secretary friend, Anoop Sharma. Kishoreda and his problem with income tax officers persisted till his death.

Aloke Dasgupta was the cameraman of the “Gaadi”. He was only 23 years old when he was put in charge by Kishoreda to photograph the movie. Dasgupta also played another important role. As Kishoreda’s romance with Madhubala started progressing, he became the couple’s confidante.

Kishoreda originally signed Kamal Mazumdar to direct both “Lookochuri” and “Gaadi”. But Mazumdar became nervous on the first day of the shoot of the “Gaadi” movie. Directing three brothers he felt was a daunting task and decided not to proceed. Satyen Bose was a friend of Kishoreda who directed him and Ashok in their previous movie together, “Bandi (1957)”. At Kishore’s request, Bose came in to direct the first scene even before knowing what he was getting into.

Satyen Bose was not happy with the choice of the cameraman because of Aloke’s lack of experience. The picturization of “Ek Ladki” was a test case for Aloke. After the shooting of the song was completed, Bose was happy with the results, and Aloke stayed as the cameraman.

When the movie was released it became a huge hit. Its songs became a rage. The duet, “Haal Kaisa Hai”, went on to adorn Binaca Geetmala’s weekly top of the charts for more than a year. My own favorite is Kishoreda’s solo “Ek Ladki”. Apparently the song was inspired by Tennesse Ernie’s English song from his album “16 Tons”. Both Jaidev and RD were assistants to SD.

I am uploading songs from this album in three back-to-back posts. The first post contains all of the songs from the film. The second post contains some specials. The third post contains some of the instrumentals of some of the popular songs from the film. These start beginning in the next post…

Chalti ka Naam Gaadi (1958) - Post 2 (Specials)

This post includes some specials. A note on the snippet "Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si (S)". The singer of this is a question mark. Subir Sen is on record declaring that he never sang this version song. There is speculation that the singer could be Shyamal Mitra. Anyway, this song is only of 20 second duration. I am including this and other version sons in this post. Here they are...

(Rajinder Krishan) Pehli Jhalak (1954)

M.V. Raman who directed this film introduced Vyjayanti Mala in the Tamil film “Vazhkai” in 1949 when she was 13 years old. He remade this film as “Bahar” in 1951 introducing Malaji to Hindi audience. This movie among others starred Kishoreda. Raman followed this with series of movies in Hindi that starred both Vyjayanti Mala and Kishoreda in all the films. This is one of them.

This film has several beautiful songs by Lataji. One of this is the lovely solo “Kaise Bhaaye”. Also, Hemantda has a superb song in “Zameen Chal Rahi”. I am uploading these songs and others in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs…

(Shakeel) Gharana (1961)

Here is a hit movie that was based on the Telugu film "Shanti Nivasam (1960)". The movie is about a dominating matriarch who torments her daughter-in-law to no end. To add insult to injury, the long suffering daughter-in-law is also ill-treated by her hopeless husband who suspects that his own younger brother is having an illicit relationship with her. Several years ago when I saw both versions of this movie, I liked them. However, I have a different perspective on life in general and people in particular that have changed my views on many things, for right or wrong. Even though there are millions of people that exist in our society like those portrayed in this movie today, I no longer can swallow its premise.

As for the music of the Hindi version, it is a fine effort from Ravi. This comes on the heels of his spectacular success of Guru Dutt’s "Chaudhvin Ka Chand" only the previous year. For his efforts, this time, he grabbed the best music director award from Filmfare. The song "Husnwaale" is an absolute delight the way only Rafi Saab can sing. Shakeel Badayuni, who was also Ravi’s collaborator in “Chand”, penned the lyrics for this movie again. The “Husnwaale” song received the Best Lyricist Award from Filmfare for its beautifully rich and flowery lyrics.

I am uploading this and other songs from this popular album in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs…

(Anand Bakshi) Himalay ki Godmein (1965)

This popular movie was immensely helped by its music. Kalyanji & Anandji were at the helm of music direction. Interestingly, Laxmikant & Pyarelal who have been entrenched firmly as music directors by this time were assistant music directors to this film.

Vijay Bhatt who made the great musical masterpiece "Baiju Bawra" in 1952 directed this film. The film was nominated for several Filmfare Awards but managed to win one, for the Best Picture.

I am uploading all songs from this film and some instrumentals in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs...

(Javed Akhtar) Prem (1995)

With the success of “Mr. India” in 1987, Boney Kapoor launched two more vehicles with the team of “India”, Javed Akhtar as the writer, Laxmikant & Pyarelal as the music directors, and Shekhar Kapur as the director. These were “Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja” and “Prem”. Anil Kapoor was the co-producer for both films. “Prem” was headed by Anil’s younger brother Sanjay as a newcomer and Tabu, who appeared in smaller roles in a couple of films, as the leading lady. More than half way through these movies, Shekhar Kapur developed differences with the producers. He decided to abandon both the projects. Satish Kaushik was brought in to finish both the films. “Roop” was released in 1993 and was a flop. “Prem” was released in 1995 and proved to be flop as well.

“Prem” was lushly photographed and has beautiful background music and several nice songs. I am uploading these in three back-to-back posts. Here are the songs in the first post…
