(Rajinder Krishan) Chacha Zindabad (1959)

The combination of Madan Mohan ji, Rajinder Krishan ji, Lata ji, and Kishoreda always produced beautiful results. That Lata ji sang some of her best songs for Mohan Saab is a well-known fact. Interestingly Kishoreda’s association with Madan ji also produced some memorable songs.

The association between Madan Mohan ji and Kishoreda goes a long way back. It started with Madan Mohan ji's second film as a composer, "Ada", released in 1951. The last film they worked together was in Chetan Anand's movie "Sahib Bahadur" released in 1975, a remake of Dev's "Afsar (1950)" which was also directed by Chetan Anand. Altogether they worked in 17 films producing several outstandingly beautiful songs. Some of the standout solos include "Dil Dil Se Mila Kar Dekho" in "Memsahib (1956)", "Aye Haseenon Naazneenon" from this film, "Zaroorat Hai Zaroorat Hai" from "Man-Mauji (1962)", "Simti Si Sharmaai Si" from "Parwana (1971)", and "Raahi Tha Main Aawaara" from "Sahib Bahadur (1975)". Interestingly, for many of these films Rajinder Krishan ji was the lyricist, who was Mohan ji's favorite.

There are several beautiful tracks in this album. Almost all songs were chartbusters making this one of the finest music Madan ji composed for a film. Apart from Kishoreda's song mentioned earlier ("Aye Haseenon") I have two more favorites in this album. One of them is Lata ji's mellifluous "Bairan Neend Na Aaye" and the other is the outstanding duet by Lata and Mannada, "Preetam Daras Dikhaao". I want to mention about another beautiful song “Des Chhudaaye”. This song showcases the versatility of Kishoreda as an actor and singer. He changes his voice so many times for this song and in the scene from the movie enacts every bit as dictated by the song. Simply amazing and utterly astonishing talent. This was one of the better films of Kishoreda where the comedy and the story together were cleverly combined.

I am uploading all songs of this popular musical in two back-to-back posts. Here is a description of these songs and the songs themselves in the first post...

(Shailendra) Miya Bibi Razi (1960)

With a title like “Miya Bibi Razi” and Mahmood as one of the principal actors I expected the film to be a comedy. Even though it had moments with Mahmood in the middle, it basically is a serious film dealing with the issue of dowry. For the film, Pt. Mukhram Sharma wrote the story, screenplay, dialogues and co-produced it with Mahesh Kaul.

There are several good songs in the film. Suman Kalyanpur was at the center stage with several good songs. In the film the beauty of the song “Khuli Hai Aankh” was lost because of number of dialogues by Mahmood who was acting like a woman performing before ladies only audience. I am uploading this song as it is but I am also uploading the same song with all dialogues and applauses removed. The result I think is a beauty by Kalyanpur.

The same thing happened with another song, “Tum Mere”, even though interruptions were very brief. I removed a couple of these minor dialogues and I am uploading this song also with and without dialogues. With the interruptions removed, I believe, Rafi Saab’s song emerges as a real winner.

Burmanda made use of the talent of a lesser known singer Kamla Sista for the fine duet “Paani Hota” with Rafi Saab. She sang some songs with Mukesh and others in the private album “Tulsi Ramayan”. Sista also sang in two or three movies earlier, notable one being the 1958 “Ganga Ki Lehren”. She had a couple of solos in that film that had music by Snehal Bhatkar. She also sang another solo for Bhatkarji in the 1959 film “Scout Camp”.

Mahendra sang only two songs in his entire career, both duets, for Burmanda. Both duets were with Asha. The title song from this film, “Mil Gaye Milne Waale”, was the first one. The second and the last one was the song “Mera Kya Sanam” from the 1969 film “Talash”.

I am uploading these and other songs from this film in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs…

(Anand Bakshi) Jigri Dost (1969)

Jeetendra plays double role in this movie based on the Tamil hit “Mattukkara Velan” released earlier that year. Unfortunately the movie is so bad that there is not much to write home about. Actress Komal, one of the heroines opposite Jeetendra, made her debut in this movie. Her real name is Poonam who later married Shatrughan Sinha. She appeared in a few films and produced a couple. She acted opposite Shatrughan in the 1973 film “Sabak”.

The song “Mere Des” appears twice in the film. The second version is a briefer version of the first one. I am uploading only the compete song (the first one).

The song of the album is the duet by Suman and Rafi Saab, “Raat Suhaani”. A beautiful song…

Here are these and other songs from this film…

(Hasrat Jaipuri) Shriman Satyawadi (1960)

This movie tells the story about a man who always tells the truth in spite of all the odds stacked against him. Raj Kapoor plays the man and Mahmood plays a baddie. In the end there is even a fight scene between Raj and Mahmood. How many movies you have seen in which Raj is ready to do a fist fight?

In spite of the noble theme and beautiful songs, the story takes too long to develop and becomes very predictable in the process. Dattaram was assisted by Sebastian and Sharma in the music department.

Here are the songs from this film…

(Majrooh) Burmah Road (1962)

There is no single redeeming value in this trashy movie. I am not sure what Ashok Kumar was doing in this atrocious kludge. Even ever so reliable Chitraguptji comes up with a disappointing and forgettable insipid uninspiring score.

Here are the songs from this film…

(Shailendra) Anuradha (1960)

Leela Naidu, the leading lady of this film (see her attached picture), was born to a French mother and Telugu father. Her father was a renowned scientist and was a disciple of Madame Curie who worked in France and later in India for a long time. Leela Naidu was crowned Miss India in 1954. That very same year she was featured in the fashion magazine Vogue which listed her as one of the ten most beautiful women in the world.

Hrishida who was looking to cast a leading lady for his film saw her picture in a magazine. He contacted her immediately and cast her in his President’s Gold Medal Award winning film “Anuradha” opposite Balraj Sahni. The movie did not work but her beauty and restrained performance awed viewers all over the world.

Her tenure as a film actress was short lived but for many years she made the list of most beautiful women in the world in the Vogue magazine.

Another unique feature of this film was its music by Pandit Ravi Shankar. Shankarji did not foray into commercial Hindi cinema too many times but this was an exception. There are only few songs in the film but several of them became very popular.

Here are the songs…

(Anand Bakshi) Jyoti (1969)

This movie came the same year “Aradhana” came. Burmanda was the music director for both the films. The success of the songs of that film just about overshadowed other films. This movie was one of them.

This movie’s score is average as per Burmanda goes but there are a couple of exceptions. The song of the album is the duet “Soch Ke”. I have not seen the movie but in the song by Kishoreda, “Aankh Meri”, Burmanda uses a couple of southern musical instruments, namely naagaswaram and mridangam. With these sounds, the song also emerges a winner. A couple of other songs have some disturbance in them. I am uploading them at a lower bit rate as noted in the table. Here are these and other songs from this movie…

(Hasrat Jaipuri) Singapore (1960)

This film was directed by Shakti Samanta for Eagle Films. Early in his career Samanta made several crime thrillers, some hits (like “Howrah Bridge (1958)”) and many misses. Later he found success with musicals (“Kashmir ki Kali (1964)”) and dramas (“Aradhana (1969)”). This crime thriller was one of the misses.

If the movie was even half way decent as its music it could have been a resounding hit. Several songs from the film became huge hits. I am uploading these in two back-to-back posts.

Here are the songs in the first post…

(Majrooh) China Town (1962)

Shakti Samanta directed the hit musical “Howrah Bridge” in 1958. He followed this with “Singapore” in 1960. Then in 1962 he came up with this film, “China Town”. All these three films were crime dramas. All seem to have basically the similar theme. In all three baddies were Orientals. In all three Madan Puri acted as an oriental with funny accent. I watched “China Town” on the heels of watching “Singapore” and felt that I was watching the same movie over again.

Salim & Javed’s “Don (1978)” was partly inspired by the beginnings of the film “China Town”. In this Shammi plays a double role, a good one and a bad one. Police get the bad one and have good one take his place to nail the crime boss. But then the stories diverge.

The repetition and lack of novelty of all the movies that came in quick succession ruins the fun of watching this. The only saving grace of the film was its music by Ravi. Most songs became huge hits with Rafi Saab’s “Baar Baar Dekho” topping the charts. Here is this and the rest of the songs from this film…
