Geeta ji has sung over 1200 songs in Hindi Films.
Many of her songs have taken the "hit". They were either deleted or not picturised, unreleased or not credited to her.
I am making this special thread for such songs.
I know only a few but surely senior members would have many more.

The film Paying Guest had a song by Geeta ji which got deleted (does anybody know the reason?).
This song had the lyrics 'Gaaye Ghabra Ke Dil' which she has sung very well.

Excellent thread buddy. One song which immediately comes to my mind is "Rut phire par din hamare" a Geeta Dutt masterpiece which got deleted from the classic Pyaasa.

And at least I can not forget the song "Chaand hain wohi" which got deleted from the film Parineeta (composed by Arunkumar). This song has my name in it (I must have stated this umpteen no of times on HF)

Another song which can be added here is "Aye hai dilruba" from Dr. Vidya (1962) composed by Burmanda. Its a duet of Geeta ji and Asha ji. My information says "Not on record", and I have not seen the film. So I am not sure if the song is there in the film or not. And its a more than 8 minute long song.......

Thanks for uploading this excellent song. Now when I downloaded this song, I realize that I have heard it in past. Probably in 50s when I was still in primary school. What happy days those were!!! Thanks a lot.

Excellent song by GD, Parag. The tune as well as the lyrics provided by Sahir are also equally great. It is really unfortunate that this pair did not work together after this film.

I sincerely appreciate the promptness with which you have shared this rare song.

I don't think I have heard "Chand Hai Wohi" song from Parineeta. I would love to hear it. Is it possible to share it too?

Are there any more ?

I think the song "Jata Kahan Hai Deewane" from CID was also deleted from the film due to censor problems. They found the word "Fi Fi" obsene and asked to cut the song from the film.

We can even consider the song "Tum jiyo hazaron saal" from the film Sujata here. It was recorded in Geeta ji's voice and then for some reason recorded again in Asha ji's voice. The song on the records and in the film was in the voice of Asha, but was credited to Geeta Dutt.

Asha Bhonsle "fought a long battle" with HMV to get the credits corrected.

What about all those films like Pujya Gandhiji, Black Prince, Kasam (1947), Hum kahan jaa rahe hain and many more which never got released.

I am sure there are at least 25-30 songs in this category.

Senior and knowledgeable members like Mahesh can throw light on these.

And what about the singer, who sang "Kaise le aaon rakhiya main bhaiyya more paaon mein bedi padi" for the same film? This one pair of songs is more than enough to showcase the versatility of the golden voice of Geeta Dutt.



Somehow I have this feeling, those who like songs of Geeta Dutt (on HF and overall in general) are not so vocal about how good a singer she is. I get a feeling we kind of keep a low profile and are some what conservative when it comes to praising the talent of this melody queen.

In this regards, Haimanti ji has been absolutely showering the right praises on the central character of her book.

the song was released on 78rpm record[N 52166];the opposite side had kishore kumar's ''mana janab ne pukara nahin''.
i believe the initial print of the film had this song and it was later removed.the tune of this song was based on a bangla song of burmanda.i will try to ul that song in a day or two.

Ummer ji has mentioned in the following post that the song "Theharo zara si der toh" from the film Savera was also deleted from the film.

The song was originally filmed on Meena Kumari.

The lyrics were by Prem Dhawan and the music was composed by Sailesh. There is another lovely Geeta Dutt song "Maane na maane na " in the same film. This was filmed on some other dancer.

I love the song as well. I got the movie a couple of weeks back from a store but am yet to watch it. When I do watch it I'll let you know if it was indeed picturised.

For me, the song "Tujhe doo main kya, yeh tuhi bataa" is one of the most beautifully rendered duet. I just love the flow and richness of this song. Hemantda and Geeta ji perfectly compliment each other in this (and most of their songs).

If it was not for HF, I would have never got to listen to this hidden gem of a song. Once again many thanks to HF and all the great music lovers who willingly share such melodies.

We can always keep chasing after the songs which we do not have in our collection, but at times I love to cherish such beautiful songs and be truly happy about it.

The voice of Geeta ji is so sincere and filled with true emotions when she sings the line "Joh maanga woh malik ne tujh ko diyaa".

This reminds me of another song, though in Bengali. In the song "Nishi raat baanka chand" she says

e jeebon-e jotoe tuku cheyechhi,
mon boley aaro beshi peyechhi

(Whatever I might have wanted from life, my heart knows that I have been given so much more..)

These lines coming from a singer, whose personal life was anything but troubles, is kind of an inspiration for mortals like us.

We need to learn to be happy and content with what we have been given!

There is one more song "teena tan taa teena" sung by Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey in 'Tangewali' (1955). The song 'Teena tan taa teena' by Geeta and Manna, although in the film was never released in any record. Unfortunately it's one of those films which is nearly impossible to get to see anymore and neither a VHS is available which could be the only source to get the song.

So we have found another song that got hit!

Sabita Choudhary is the wife of Salil Choudhary. She was Sabita Banerjee before marriage. She cut a lot of version songs in the 1950s.

By the way, when you have time, please listen to the song "Gul khile ya na khile" from the film "Raat ki Uljhan" composed by Salilda. I am not sure if it is sung by Geeta ji.
Even when her voice was affected to some extent (listen to songs like "Lat ulajhi hain" and "Mere hamnashin mere hamnawa") still the voice in the above duet with Rafi sahab seems to be different.

I'm no big expert either. However on listening to the song alone my feeling was that the female voice doesn't sound much like Geeta ji's. Even when she had poor voice days in the 60s her mannerisms were always there. I also felt that the voice definitely has the bengali lilt though. A few days back the Raj Kapoor thread on SKS by Swarapriya ji had seen an upload of Savita Banerjee/Choudhary version of Yeh Chaman Hamara Apna Hai(Ab Dilli Door Nahin). On comparison of the two voices in the songs I find much more similarity. I feel that 95% it is indeed Savita Banerjee as the duet partnet with Rafi sahab.

I completed watching Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam today. I found that the song Koi Door Se Awaaz De appeared in background a couple of times and wasn't really picturised in the true sense. Is it missing in my VCD? Would you consider the song as a hit too?

Yes, you are right, but most of the CD compilations simply start with the song "Jaane kya tune kahin". Other verses from Pyaasa are released as separate songs on cassettes/CDs but not this one.

Thanks for going through all the posts and compiling a list of songs discussed so far. I think my guess was right, by now we have found 22 songs. I am sure there are more such instances.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that even the song "Aa jaane wafa aa" from Anarkali not being included in the LP of this film's album or CDs of the same. (Even though this song is available through CD compilations/audio cassettes of Geeta ji).

Sadly, a beautiful Geeta Dutt solo, Rut Phire Par Din Hamare was removed from the film about a week after it had released.

The only reason I see for removal of this song is to reduce the length of the film.
A true loss for us!

Thanks for uploading this rare song of GD. Just like the other song uploaded by HB from this movie, this too has a different style of music provided by Anil Biswas - very much unlike AB. Both these songs are really very nice.

I notice that the lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. The Talat song from this movie was written by Indivar (as per tag in my file!!!). This is the earliest song I know where Anand Bakshi has provided the lyric.

I realize that the focus of this thread is Geeta ji (songs that took hit) and not MD or the lyricist. Hope there is no issue with this diversion.

This confused me more when I found the talat song which I remembered. Movie may have released then. The songs were posted there earlier and were not labelled there as unreleased.

There is some confusion about the movie definitely.

The disc of Bade Sarkar (1957) is said to mention the song "Jahan jahan khayal jaata hain" as Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle duet. As we all know this is in fact a Mohd Rafi-Geeta Dutt duet.

So does this song qualify as a "hit" as well?

I would say the song itself was not hit but was certainly miscredited. There are quite a few Geeta songs which were miscredited to Asha and a couple reverse cases as well!

Found out about an interesting "hit".
Bhagam Bhag had a duet of hers with Rafi, "Darshan Kab Doge Bolo Na" released in the disc but never made it to the movie where it featured as a Rafi solo.
Request upload of this song in duet version if available with generous members.

Looks like the evergreen song "Koi chupke se aake" was deleted from the film Anubhav (1971), though it was released on records.

The song is missing on the DVD. Has any one seen it in the theater or on VHS/VCD?

I read somewhere that the film version of More Balma O More Sajna in Rangeen Raaten was a Lata solo, but the 78 rpm record version was a Lata-Geeta duet. Can somebody confirm this? It would be great if someone can upload the duet version of this lovely song.

A little more information found on one of the songs:

Kafir. Directed by Chetan Anand, starring Dev Anand, Geeta Bali and Priya Rajvansh! Four recorded songs by four different singers - Lata, Asha, Geeta Dutt and Sudha Malhotra

So it means that the song "Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hain" was indeed recorded in Geeta ji's voice!

Out of all the songs discussed on this topic so far, a new information has been received from a very reliable and authentic source.

This is related to a film where Geeta ji has sung as many as five songs (that we know) but the film was never released. We need confirmation about the fact whether the records of these songs were released or not. The film starred one of the topmost actress of those times. The male star of the film is a veteran from the 40s and was also the producer of the film.

Can any one guess which film I am referring to here?

Yes Mahesh, that is correct. The film I was referring to is Saagar (1951) starring P Jairaj and Nargis.

I recently got in touch with Lavanya ji, daughter of Lyricist Narendra Sharma ji and she mentioned to me that the film was (probably) never completed and of course hence not released. She also said that the actor-producer Jairaj ji was their neighbor in those days and she had also seen promotional material of the film.

By the way, she is delighted to see our website.

That is right Aditya, even based on my information so far, the film Saagar was released in the year 1951. I was kind of surprised when Lavanya ji mentioned to me that it was not the case. Since her father penned the lyrics for the film, I thought that she might have more authentic information about the film. In addition to that, the producer-actor was also their neighbor.

Now we need some confirmation from forum members to find out if this film was ever released or not.

I have come to know of two other hit song of Geeta ji.

Apparently she sang a song "So Gaya, So Gaya" for MD S. Mohinder (lyrics: RMA Khan) in movie Shrimati ji 1952 but the song got scrapped. Incidentally three songs of Shamshad ji were also hit in this movie.

She also sang a song "Jiya Hai Udaas" for Ek Do Teen 1953 (MD: Vinod)

The song "More Baalma Ho More Saajna Ho" a duet with LM+chorus got picturised as an LM+Chorus song in the movie Rangeen Raaten 1956.

In the film Hulchul 1951 two Geeta songs had got hit.

1. A song 'Oh Bichchde Hue Saathi Jiyoon Kaise Bata De Ujdi Hui' was first recorded as a Rafi-Geeta duet but was later re-recorded as a Rafi-Lata duet
2. A 7-minute long song written by Khumaar Barabankvi 'Mile Dil Aankh Sharmaayi' sung by Geeta ji, Rafi, Meena Kapoor, Mubarak Begum and chorus was recorded.

No records were issued for both the songs. It is not known whether the songs had music by Mohd Shafi or Sajjad.

The song you have uploaded was released (record no N50978).
The two songs I mentioned are different ones according to geet kosh whose records were cancelled. i don't know if they were used for the movie soundtrack.
