Three Of A Kind
Movies of Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar & Kishore Kumar

One is an evergreen hero. The other is a king of tragedy. The third one is a king of comedy. Here we are referring to Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. From early 40's through early 90's, nearly five decades they have given us great movies full of memorable music. Together they made 300 plus movies.

I have most of their albums in CDs except for some early ones. In the next few months I will upload these. I will be requesting for missing songs when I go through the movies in chronological order. I am hoping to get help from members like they have been for my other threads. Thank you ...

Dev Anand

Dev Anand, born on September 26, 1923, is the second of three Anand brothers, the eldest being Chetan and the youngest Vijay. All three belonged to the Hindi film industry. All three were actors as well as producers, writers, and directors. Shekhar Kapur, another well known film name who made movies like “Masoom”, “Mr. India”, “Bandit Queen”, and the Oscar nominated English movie “Elizabeth”, is Dev’s nephew.

Dev was a graduate in English Literature but decided to become an actor and moved to Mumbai. He made few mostly forgettable movies starting in 1946 with “Hum Ek Hain”. But things turned around for better for him in 1948. At the recommendation of Ashok Kumar, he was cast as a hero in the movie “Ziddi (1948)” opposite Kamini Kaushal. This movie was a huge hit. Encouraged by the success of this movie, Dev launched his own production company called Navketan. Under this banner Dev continues producing, acting, writing, and directing movies till today.

In his formative years as an actor Dev made several movies with Suraiya, all very successful. During a boating accident while shooting for a movie, Dev saved Suraiya’s life. Romance developed between them but never materialized into a marriage because of the opposition of Suraiya’s grandmother. Suraiya remained unmarried rest of her life.

Dev married a costar of several of his films, Kalpana Kartik.

Dev’s first big hit came with “Baazi” in 1951. This movie was directed by Guru Dutt, a close friend of Dev. It was first for Guru. The songs of this film were written by Sahir Ludhianvi. Their rich lyrics brought fame to Sahir. The music was composed by S.D. Burman. Some of the memorable songs in the movie were sung by Geeta Dutt. The association of Burmanda and Dev continued and flourished for many years until Burmanda’s death. Little over one-third of the movies Burmanda composed music for had Dev as the principal actor.

Dev worked hard to produce “Guide”, a novel by R.K. Narayan, in both English and Hindi. He was able to get support from the Nobel Laureate Pearl Buck for the English production. However, the English version failed miserably. Hindi version came later on. It was directed by his younger brother, Vijay, and was a runaway hit and is considered to be a milestone in Hindi cinema as well as Dev’s career.

Over the years, Dev introduced several new faces. The two who made names for themselves were Zeenat Aman and Tina Munim.

Dev is not only remembered for some fine entertainers he made but also the rich legacy of songs that are immensely popular even today.

Dev won Filmfare award as a best actor twice. He was also awarded by the Government of India Padma Bhushan. He has also received Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

In the span of 63 years of professional career, Dev starred in 110 plus some movies. Evergreen, energetic, and eager to make subjects on social matters, he continues to be busy making movies even though he hasn’t had a success since 1978 with “Des Pardes”.

Here is his filmography …

Dilip Kumar

Dilip Kumar, whose given name at birth in 1922 was Yusuf Khan, is known as the Tragedy King of the Indian screen. He moved to Mumbai in 1930s with his parents. His parents owned large fruit orchards. In 1940s he moved to Pune selling dried fruits and working in a military canteen. Devika Rani spotted him in the canteen and helped him land an acting job in Amiya Chakravarty’s “Jwar Bhata”, released in 1944. He also took the screen name as Dilip Kumar at Chakravarty’s suggestion.

In 1947, when Noor Jehan consented to star opposite to him in “Jugnu”, hitherto unheralded Dilip got instant recognition. A spate of great movies followed “Jugnu”. Dilip is such a multifaceted actor that whichever role he took he excelled in it. He was the king of tragedy in films like “Devdas” and “Deedar”. He was king of comedy in films like “Azaad” and “Kohinoor”. He was a swashbuckling hero in films like “Aan” and “Insaaniyat”. He was a romantic king in the films like “Mughal-E-Azam” and “Andaz”.

Late in 70’s, after a spate of failures of his movies, Dilip took time off to regroup. After a five year lapse he came back with Manoj Kumar’s “Kranti” in 1981 and made a series of successful movies playing character roles.

His last movie ”Qila” was released in 1988. In a span of 54 years of professional career he made nearly 70 movies. If you consider the number of hits Dilip made, this number seems small. But it does speak volumes about his histrionics and unmatched acting skills.

Early in 50’s Dilip was romantically involved with his fellow actress, beautiful Madhubala. The romance ended on a sour note when Madhubala reneged by not cooperating with B.R. Chopra in whose film “Naya Daur” she was starring opposite Dilip when she refused to go for outdoor shooting. When Dilip testified against her and her father in the court, the relationship abruptly ended. Dilip eventually married another actress, Saira Banu.

Recently two of his black-and-white classics, “Mughal-E-Azam” and “Naya Daur” were colorized and re-released.

During his illustrious career, Dilip was garnered with several richly deserving awards. He won the Best Actor Filmfare Award eight times, a record. He also received Pakistan’s highest civilian award “Nishan-E-Pakistan”. In 1994, he received Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He is a recipient of Bharat Ratna.

The following is Dilip’s filmography …

Kishore Kumar

Eccentric. Energetic. Entertaining. Producer. Director. Composer. Actor. Story writer. Script writer. Song writer. A prolific vocalist who sang in several Indian languages. In Essence, that is what Kishore Kumar was about.

Kishore Kumar was born into a Bengali family in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, on August 14, 1929. His birth name was Abhas Kumar. He was the youngest of Ganguly brothers; Ashok, Anoop, and Kishore. Both Ashok and Anoop were actors.

His older brother Ashok Kumar who was an established and popular actor christened his name to Kishore Kumar when he was chosen to sing as a chorus singer for the Bombay Talkies Studios. While Kishore was spending time with his brother, he took keen interest in movies in general and music in particular. He was inspired by the immortal K.L. Saigal and initially imitated his style of singing.

Kishore played a small role in “Shikari (1946)” in which Ashok was the lead actor. Khemchand Prakash was the first music director who gave him a chance to sing in “Ziddi (1948)”. Kishore was never too serious about his acting career but at his brother’s insistence decided to try as an actor. Soon he got a chance to play the lead role in “Andolan (1951)”. Soon many roles came his way.

In 1950, at the advise of S.D. Burman, Kishoreda decided to develop his own singing style. Burmanda helped him grow as a singer even though Kishore never had any formal training in music. He appeared as a singer for many Burmanda movies, most notably as a playback singer for Dev Anand. Later it was R.D. Burman, son of Burmanda, patronized Kishore after the huge success of “Padosan”.

Kishore wrote, produced, and directed several movies. One of the most successful movies he produced and directed was “Door Gagan Ki Chhaaon Mein”.

During the Indian Emergecy (1975 to 1977) of prime minister Indira Gandhi’s era, her son Sanjay Gandhi insisted that Kishore sing a song for the Congress party rally in Mumbai. When Kishore refused, his songs were banned on the air for many months.

Kishore divorced his wife in 1960 to marry an ailing Madhubala. It was not a happy marriage. Neither Madhubala’s parents, nor Kishoreda’s parents approved their wedding. They lived most of their married years separately until Madhubala’s death in 1969.

Kishore married twice again after Madhubala’s death. He has two sons, Amit and Sumit. Amit sang several songs for movies and acted in couple of movies his father made.

Kishore stopped acting appearing only occasionally and that too mostly in the movies he himself produced and directed in the late-70s. By that time his star as a singer started rising thanks to the unprecedented success of “Aaradhana (1970)”. He won Filmfare Best Singer Award eight times. He won the National Award as the Best Singer in 1984 for “Sharaabi”.

Kishoreda passed away of a massive heart attack on October 13, 1987.

Even though he wasn’t active as much midway through his career as an actor, Kishoreda still made around 90 or so movies.

Here is his filmography as an actor …

(Dev) Hum Ek Hain (1946)

This was the very first movie Dev starred in. It was made by Prabhat Film Company. Guru Dutt had double duties for this movie; as a choreographer (Guru was a disciple of the great dancer Uday Shankar, older brother of the famous sitarist Ravi Shankar) and also as an assistant director of the movie. Rehman also starred in the movie. This is where Guru Dutt became a close friend to both Dev and Rehman.

It is said that both Dev and Guru had the same laundry man. One day by mistake, laundryman delivered Dev's shirts to Guru. Guru was wearing one of these shirts while Dev was shooting a scene for the movie. Dev noticed that Guru was wearing his shirt. Dev approached him and asked him where he got the shirt. Once they found out the source, they had a hearty laugh. This was the start of a great friendship between these two men.

All songs from this movie are by the courtesy of the Forum members. Thank you. I am missing names of singers for some of the songs. If someone can help identify them, I will be grateful. Here are the songs ...

I also have Prabhu Charnon Mein Deep but in very low bitrate. I can email it to you if requested.

Two other comments:

1- Having seen some Dilip interviews, as a young man he was influenced by Gary Cooper, Paul Muni and Spencer Tracy - something of which is reflected in his performances.
2- Kalinga was an epic project he worked on for a long time and in fact directed but I don't think it was ever released or even completed. I'd love to see it if it was released.

Kind Regards

(Kishore) Shikari (1946)

Per filmography, Kishore appeared in the movie "Do Ghadi Ki Mauj" in 1935. If this is true, I don't have any songs from this movie. Requesting members to kindly share.

The filmography also gives that Kishore appeared in the 1936 film "Krorepati". I believe this is in error. This movie starred Saigal. I do have some songs from this movie but bacause I am convinced that Kishore didn't appear in this movie, I am not uploading these here. May be some of our learned members can help resolve this. By the way, Kishore did star in a movie called "Krorepti" later in his acting carrier, in 1961.

That leaves me to come to this album, which I believe is the film in which Kishore made his acting debut. Its music is by that great composer S.D. Burman. There are 10 songs in this movie. I am uploading five of them here. Requesting members to share the rest if they can. Also, I am including Burmanda's version of "Rangeela Re" song. It is an absolute treat. Please see the post be Pradeep Asrani below.

This movie had several songs that were sung by the great actor Ashok Kumar. He had such a beautiful voice. I wonder why he chose not to sing in his movies later in his career. Interestingly, he insisted on Kihsore to make a career as an actor instead of as a singer Kishore originally wanted to be.

The source of the songs is from CD collections and from the Forum members. Thanks to the members. Now for the songs ...

The song Rangeela Re, Kahan Kahan Gaya Re is indeed sung by Kishore Kumar along with Paro (the female singer) and Ashok Kumar (the other male singer). SDB should be credited for the first song of Kishore Kumar as an adult, although as a child, he was in the chorus group which accompanied Ashok Kumar in Chal Chal Re Naujawan from Bandhan (1940). This is also, perhaps, the only instance when the two brothers have sung together. The song in Ziddi, Marne Ki Duayen is his first song as a playback singer.

Pradeep

Sorry I responded by reading the caption rather than the list of songs where SP has clearly mentioned the singers of Rangeela Re, the Trio.

Posted by: pradeepasrani Nov 18 2009, 10:58 PM

The solo Rangeela is indeed SDB himself but it is a Bengali Non-film song and not from Shikari. SDB repeated the tune of this song in Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Sanware in Devdas (1955).

Jagmag Hai Aasman and Dol Rehi Hai Naiya is same song but sung twice, once as a solo by Ashok and again as a duet by Ashok and Paro.

David Lean was married several times and one of his many wives was an Indian lady. He became friends with Dilip when married to that lady, probably because of the indian connection. He did offer the Omar Sharif role to Dilip and our superstar declined for the simple reason that he was lazy. He was quite blunt in interviews in stating that as a superstar he could walk onto indian film sets as late as he liked and was treated like royalty. He knew he would be required to change his habits for a western picture and didn't think he could change his habits. I must admit I found his reason quite disappointing...

(Dev) Aage Badho (1947)

This movie starred beautiful and talented Khurshid Bano and Dev Anand. It was Dev's second movie but Khurshid was already a veteran actress by this time. Khurshid Bano, born Irshad Begum, was a well known singer and actress in 30’s and 40’s. (See the picture in the attachment.) Her first movie role was in a movie called “Eye for an Eye”, a silent movie, made in 1931 (the year first talkie was made "Alam Ara"). She made several movies through 30’s and 40’s with all the leading men of those days. She is the only other actress, aside from beautiful Suraiya, to work opposite immortal Saigal in two movies. The film “Tansen” made in 1943 was a huge success and brought her fame both as a singer as well as an actress.

“Papeeha Re” made in 1948 was her last film in India before she migrated to Pakistan. She did not find the anticipated success in that country. She passed away in Karachi at the age of 87 in 2001.

I am uploading four songs from this movie here. Three of the missing songs are shown in red italics in the table below. Probably more or missing. Requesting members to share the missing songs if they can. Thank you.

Here are the songs from this movie ...

Interesting. Didn't ever think Dilip as a lazy fellow. If that is what his excuse was, Faraaj, I must agree with you it was just a lame one and very disappointing. But it doesn't diminish any less of my admiration for him as one of our greatest actors. By the way, I thought Omar Sharif did a great job in "Lawrence of Arabia", the role which was initially offered to Dilip. Incidentally, the movie also had I.S. Johar in a very significant role.

Great thread Swarapriya Sis.Kishoreda was a great actor, and allthough he was mainly known for comic acting and zanny slapstick comedy,he had done some serious roles also like in Bhai Bhai,Naukri,Door trilogy etc.He had also acted in 4 bengali films-
Lookochuri
Ektuku Choan Laage
Madhya Rater Tara
Dustu Projapoti.
All his 4 bengali films have great songs sung by Kishoreda.

Well, Deb, you're preaching to the choir when you're talking about Kishore. Inspite of all of the human weaknesses he had, like rest of us, he also was a cinematic genius because of the awsome talent he possessed.

By the way, may be you can post the songs from these movies at appropriate times. I'm going in chronological order, but you can upload them any time you like.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Thank you.

Please accept my compliments too for all the threads you conceive and energetically pursue them till the vey end.

A couple of minor corrections, I may point out:

In Sawan Ki Ghatao Dheere Dheere Aao (Aage Badho), it is Rafi who accompanies Khurshid. This incidently is the first song in which Rafi gives playback for Dev Anand. Rafi also had the rare distinction of singing with three of our legendary actor / actress singers in Saigal, Noorjehan and Khurshid. I do not think he has sung with some of the others like Kanan Devi and Surendranath.

It is unlikely that the non film Bengali song, Rangeela Re, will Be written by G.S.Nepali.

(Dilip) Jugnu (1947)

This movie was made by Noor Jehan’s husband, Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. It gave an early but big break for Dilip's career. It was a hit that helped herald Dilip as a force for many years to come. This movie also starred Ghulam Mohammed, the muisc director of “Pakeezah (1971)” fame. Also, in the song “Woh Apni Yaad Dilaane Ko Ek Ishq Ke Duniya Chhod Gaye”, Rafi Saab makes a cameo appearance. This probably was the only movie Rafi Saab appeared on the screen.

Noor Jehan appeared in three movies in 1947 (“Do Bhai”, “Jugnu”, and “Mirza Sahiban”). See the picture attached. “Mirza Sahiban” was her last movie in India before she migrated to Pakistan. Magnificent Noor Jehan who started her career as a child artiste in 1930 made 81 movies in India, 12 of which were silent. In Pakistan she made only 14 movies, 10 in Urdu and four in Punjabi. Her last acting stint was in 1963 in a movie called “Baaji”. After that she exclusively devoted her time to singing until her death in 2000.

I am uploading all of the songs from this film. Some came from CD and others from video. The quality of video songs is just fair. All three songs of Roshanara Begum are of inferior quality. The song by Shamshadji, "Loot Jawani" has a skip nearly 1 minute 55 seconds into the song. Also I am uploading several longer versions in the second post.

Here is the first set of songs ...

If no one u/l's CDQ I'll upload the version I have. I hope its not the same as the one you uploaded, but then I wouldn't call mine inferior quality.

(Kishore) Shehnai (1947)

This album has several good songs. I haven't heard too many of Binapani Mukherjee's songs, but she has a great voice. Listen to the solo, "Jai Krishna Hare Hare". A real beauty. All songs are of good quality except a couple. One is the song "Jawaani Ki Rail" with Geetaji and I am not certain about the male singer. It didn't sound like either Chitalkar or Kishore. The second song is the extended version of "Maar Kataari". In the beginning of this song there is a lot of noise but later it becomes clearer.

These songs came from various sources including CD and DVDs. I may have gotten some songs through the Forum members. My many thanks.

Jawani Ki Rail is in the voices of Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar & Chitalkar. It is one of the first sngs Lata sang for CR, thus starting a melodious partnership that gave us such beuatiful songs but suddenly came to an end.

Here is an album that starred beautiful and talented Suraiya & Dev for the first time. They went on to star in another four or so movies and became one of the hot pairs in the movie industry that led to romance which for various reasons didn't come to fruition in a marriage.

This is also the first movie for which the great Burmanda gave music to a Dev's movie. Nobody knew that this association will lead to some of the greatest music ever created by Burmanda for Dev's movies.

Suraiya has four solos and a duet with Mukesh. She sounds absolutely great. Most of these songs came from the contributions by the Forum members. Thank you. I am uploading the songs in two back-to-back posts. The quality of the songs is not uniform. I will rate them fair to good. Here is the first set of songs ...

Our fellow member and my good friend Parag (Sanka) tells me that the Hindi version "Milan" was based on the Bengali film "Naukadubi". Abhi Bhattacharya played the role in the Bengali version that Dilip played in Hindi. There is another song Geetaji sang in this movie and it is a short one but its full version can be seen and heard at the following path ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z66Ls9NpoHU

Parag adds that Geetaji also sang these songs in the Bengali version of the movie. One of them was composed by Rabindranath Tagore himself even though not sure of which one. Tushar Bhatia, the gentleman who helped bring many of Geetaji's songs into limelight, tells that there is a 78 RPM recording of this song exists and that was confirmed by the composer Anilda himself. A nice post detailing who Tushar Bhatia is and tremendous favors he has done for Geetaji's fans all over the world can be found in the directory Hamara Forums > Legends > Geeta Dutt at the following path ...

http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?show...9&hl=tushar

Thank you very much Parag for all the information and getting things straight on the origins of this movie ...

(Dev) Ziddi (1948)

Aditya, our fellow member, points out that Kishoreda indeed made a cameo appearance in this Dev's movie, but probably uncredited. I am not doubting that but there is no doubt that Kishoreda made his solo singing debut in this movie.

Kehmchand Prakash, the music director of this movie, gets the credit for giving Kishore a chance to sing the solo "Marne Ke Duaaen Kyon Maangoon". This was filmed on Dev Anand. Before this song, in the movie "Eight Days", released in 1946, Kishoreda participated as one of the chorus singers for the song “Baanka Sipahiya Ghar Jaaye Ho”. The Dev-Kishore connection which started in this movie endured many many years to come and produced some of the most memorable melodious songs Hindi moviedom has ever known. Kishore also sang another solo and a duet with Lata in this film.

Swarapriya Sis Kishoreda was very much there in the Ziddi.I have the film Ziddi and there Kishoreda did a small role as a gardener where the dialogue of him was to throw some abusive language but he was so involved in the shooting that he actually threw some more abusive language which was not there in the script,so there was a retake of that shot. And Kishoreda also did a small role in Kaneez,I have the film Kaneez also. And in the book KISHORE KUMAR THE MANY FACES OF A GENIUS it is clearly written that Kishoreda had acted in both these 2 films and I also have the privilege to have both these films. So please uplaod the songs from film Kaneez.

(Dilip) Anokha Pyar (1948)

When I uploaded these songs earlier under "Thee Reigning Queens", our fellow member Aditya Pant informed that the reason this movie has so many of the same songs sung by both Lata and Meena Kapoor was because when it was time to record the songs Meenaji fell ill. Lata recorded all the songs for the 78 rpm records. The exception was for the duet "Aye Dil Meri Wafa" for which with Lata, Ira Nagrath also sang.

Almost all of the songs are due to the Forum members with vdsachin contributing the bulk, Faraaj a couple, and maheshks one. I am uploading these in back to back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...

Most of the songs were composed by Ghulam Haider. A couple of songs were composed by Hansraj Behl. This was the first movie in which O.P. Nayyar made his debut. He scored the background music for the movie.

Almost all songs are of decent quality, remember they are 60 years old. The song "Apni Roothi Hui" because of its very slow recording pace appears to be from a 78 rpm record. I am uploading the songs in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...

Here is an album where Shamshadji has three beautiful solos and five duets, four of which I am uploading here. I am missing two songs shown in red italics in the table below. Requesting members to share these songs if they can.

This movie starred wiith Dilip a lady named Mumtaz Shanti (photo attached). She acted in only a few movies before she migrated to Pakistan after the independence. But before her move, she made some very popular movies including the record breaking "Kismet" in 1943 with Ashok Kumar. When she migrated to Pakistan, she still had a few acting assignments on hand that she committed to do. She came back to India often enough to complete all her assignments, a magnificent gesture. But she couldn't do much with her talent in Pakistan and died unknown, as someone observed, in dignified poverty.

Here are the songs, all by te courtesy of the Forum members. Thank you ...

SB,

This one sounds so similar to Anand Mat song; could the audio be Hemant Kumar's version from Anand Mat?

(Dev) Afsar (1950)

This movie was a milestone in Hindi cinema for sveral reasons. Dev founded Navketan and this was the first movie he produced under that banner. The Navketan banner went on to make many more movies in the years to come. This was the movie for which Sachinda gave music for. This association of Sachinda with Navketan, and especially with Dev, became a boon for music lovers. Some of the most memorable music ever composed by Burmanda was for this banner. Over one-third of movies he composed music for starred Dev.

This movie was directed by Chetan Anand, elder brother of Dev. Chetan made the same movie years later as "Saheb Bahadur" in 1977. But the 1977 movie didn't have Suraiya. Also, Dev was 27 years older. The off screen romance that pervaded the private lives of Suraiya and Dev permeated through Afsar that made it so endearing.

A word about Burmanda's music for this movie. With Suraiya's beautiful voice the songs from this album are sprinkled with sweetness of melody all over. And melody was Burmanda's trademark. Especially Suraiya's song "Mann Mor" is composed with a combination of flute and sitar is just unforgettable that makes Narendra Sharma's rich lyrics come alive.

The song "Pardesi Re" apparently was based on Burmanda's own Bengali composition "Padmar Dheu Re". The emphasis of "Re" in each antara of this song casts a melodic spell. Also, I have read some place that the inspiration for the song "Naina Diwaane" came from Rabindranath Tagore's composition. The beats of tabla with sounds of piano and music of flute that accompany Suraiya's voice is an unforgettable experience that leaves you longing for more.

I am missing two songs by Manmohan Krishna. The details are shown in red italics in the table below. If you can, please share these with rest of us.

Now let us treat ourselves for the delectably delicious songs from this album ...

(Dilip) Andaz (1949)

Most of the following write up is taken from the "Three Reiging Queens" thread where earlier I covered songs of this album.

Here is a classic that never gets dated. Probably that is why it is a classic. This was definitely one of the great movies of Mehboob Khan. If his other great classic “Mother India” dealt with rustic India, this movie dealt with urban India and the influence of western culture on it. Both movies starred one of our greatest actresses, Nargis. She probably owes to Mehboob more than anyone else for bringing out the best in her.

Nargis was hardly 19 years old when “Andaz” was made. She was already an established actress. As a matter of fact she had the top billing in this movie with Dilp Kumar and Raj Kapoor names to appear after hers when the titles of the movie rolled. This was the first movie in which her acting abilities were really challenged. The role that has many shades of complexity and demanded consummate histrionics. She rose to the occasion magnificently. She brings out the carefree tomboyish nature of a growing woman with much glee and élan. She puts forth forcibly the role of a responsible business woman with ever so ease. She exemplifies as an adoring wife with romantic abandon. She gives intensity to her performance to show moral conflict of a person caught between the love of two men which shows bleeding wounds of suffering. This is the movie Nargis announced to the world that she has arrived.

After casting Nargis, Mehboob Khan asked her whom does she want to play her husband in the movie, Dilip or Raj. She chose Raj. Each of the male leads did a great job in such contrasting roles. It was restraint in acting of Dilip versus the deliberate overplay of Raj. It was fun to watch these two great performers for the first and the last time together in the same movie.

The movie has some great music by Naushad ji. Like in most of his early movies, Naushadji was just brilliant. Every song was a super hit. Interestingly all songs by Mukesh were picturized on Dilip and Rafi sang for Raj. Incidentally, the previous year, in “Mela (1948)”, Naushad used the voice of Mukesh for Dilip. Those songs were also huge hits.

This was a banner year for Lata. Every song in this movie was a huge hit. But this didn’t come easy. While recording of these songs, Naushadji felt that Lata lacked proper Urdu diction. Lataji’s mother tongue being Marathi, this was not unusual. Naushadji spent many hours coaching Lata on how to speak Urdu and how to sing some of the songs. This becomes very evident when Lata sings the song “Uthaaye Jaa Unke Sitam” in the movie. By the way, Lata also had another magnificent movie this same year in Raj Kapoor’s memorable musical “Barsaat”.

Because of the number of songs I will upload these in two back-to-back posts. I am also including a couple of unreleased songs that were contributed by the fellow Forum member, kadri420. Many thanks to Kadriji.

QUOTE(swarapriya @ Jan 9 2010, 03:10 AM) *

This was a banner year for Lata. Every song in this movie was a huge hit. But this didn’t come easy. While recording of these songs, Naushadji felt that Lata lacked proper Urdu diction. Lataji’s mother tongue being Marathi, this was not unusual. Naushadji spent many hours coaching Lata on how to speak Urdu and how to sing some of the songs. This becomes very evident when Lata sings the song “Uthaaye Jaa Unke Sitam” in the movie.

Lata has very rarely made outright mistakes in diction; one of these rare instances occurs in "Andaz". In the song "merii laa.Dalii rii merii laa.Dalii", there is line that goes "ghuu.NghaT kaa.Dh ke gu.Diyaa naache". It appears twice in succession; both times, Lata pronounces the "che" of "naache" in the way it is pronounced in Marathi, where this sound is distinctly different. It's quite amusing.

After 1949, one is hard put to find a Lata song where one can find fault with her diction (barring one oft-repeated glitch: pronouncing "muhabbat" as "muh*o*bbat"!).

As usual, Swarapriya, excellent work. I didn't have one of the unreleased tracks: it was a pleasure discovering it.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Abhay, there is one more instance that comes to my mind and that was in 1951. In Jhukti Hai Duniya from Sagai, Lata pronounces Begum as begham (implying "without sorrow"), not once but twice.

SP, in Lata's own words, it was Mohd. Shafi who put her in touch with a Maulana who tutored her in Urdu. This happened after the (in)famous daal-bhaat incident with Dilip Kumar during the making of Andaz.

(Dev) Dilruba (1950)

Here is a festival of songs of Geetaji. This album boasts 10 songs and Geetaji stars in eight of them; six sweet solos and two delightful duets. In solos you see her vibrantly melodious voice paint quivering pathos in a couple of them, pleading for her lover in another, romantic rave in a couple more, and philosophical about life in another.

I am uploading these songs in back-to-back two posts. All these songs are by the courtesy of our Forum member Mirsaji. Thank you very much for the songs, Mirsaji.

(Kishore) Naukri (1954)

Bimalda tackled so many socially relevant issues in his movies that most of his films stand as towering pillars of Indian cinema. He was brilliant. He was a genius. He was insightful. He was relevant. Take this movie, for example. It tackles the issue of unemployment. This was in 1954. The subject is still very relevant even today. Bimalda tackles this social evil, or malaise, in such a sensitive way that you cannot help but love for his deep insights into the human psyche. Here he has Kishoreda as his actor. In the hands of Bimalda, Kishore comes through as one of the sensitive and restrained performers. The pathos, the pensiveness, the gloom, the helplessness, yet the ray of hope, hope for a better tomorrow - all these moods and shades of life Kishoreda brings in brilliantly.

This movie also introduced Mahmood in a bit role.

Salilda was skeptical about Kishoreda's singing abilities. He initially dismissed him as a singer because Kishoreda had no formal training in music or singing. But after taking a couple of trial tests, Salilda was impressed enough that he let him sing the song "Chhota Sa Ghar Hoga". Salilda originally had Hemantda in mind to sing this song, but instead settled on Kishoreda. Hemantda does sing an abbreviated version of this song. Kishore's song almost starts like yodelling with "Aa Airey Aa Airey" and picks up with a beautiful rhythm. An absolute beauty.

Kishoreda also sings a couple of other beauties. One is "Arji Hamaari" which starts like a dialogue and transforms into a beautiful song. Then the other one is the song "Ek Chhoti Si Naukri" that Kishoreda sang with Shankar Dasgupta and Shyam Mitra.

Then there is another beautiful song by Geetaji, "Jhoome Re". In Geetaji's beatifully stylized distinctive sweet voice, one can feel the pleasures of the first flush of love. A real lovely.

Here are the songs ...

(Kishore) Baap Re Baap (1955)

This album has two music directors; C. Ramchandra and O.P. Nayyar. I am not sure how this came about. There are 11 songs in it. Ramchandra composed three songs and OP the rest. It is just Asha, Asha, and more Asha in these songs. She sings 10 of 11, eight solos and two duets. The other song is a solo by Kishoreda. This album boasts one of the very popular duets of Asha and Kishore in "Piya Piya". A lovely composition by OP.

I am uploading these songs in back-to-back two posts. Here is the first set ...

(Dev) Nirala (1950)

Dev was teamed up with beautiful Madhubala in this movie. It has some very good songs. C. Ramchandra and the lyricist P.L. Santoshi, whenever they got togeter, they produced some beautiful songs. They worked together in at least 10 movies I am aware of. "Nirala", "Namoona", "Sargam", "Shehnai" are some of these movies.

I am uploading the songs from this film in two back-to-back posts. In the first post I am including a specail, where Lata gives an introduction in praise of C. Ramchandra. This song, "Mehfil Mein Jal Uthi Shama" is taken from her album, "Lata in Her Own Voice-1". Otherwise, most of the songs were contributed by the Forum members. Thank you.

Now for the first set of songs ...

Here are the rest of the songs from this fine album. I am also posting a special version of the song "Piya Piya Piya" with an introduction by Asha Bhosle where she talks about how Kishoreda's funny antics during rehearsals sometimes made it so difficult to sing. This is taken from the album "Legends: Kishore Kumar - The Versatile Genius (CD 1)".

Now for the songs ...

Thanks

I am uploading a Revival Songs from this Album

Piya Piya Piya Mora Jiya Pukaare (Revival) / 6.45 MB, Format - mp3, Duration 00:03:11 , 320 Kbps (Sorry for high bitrate ,as its sound quality is so good that i don't want to lower it)

(Dilip) Tarana (1951)

Here is a beautiful musical composition from Anil Biswas. The songs in this movie reflect the moods of the lead pair, Madhubala & Dilip. There was budding romance between these two and it can be easily seen how it displays on the screen when these two are together. Madhubala never looked this prettier, lighting up the screen with her sensously infectious smile. Dilip never looked this easy going in any roles he played. Their real life romance permeates the on screen presence and it is refreshing to see them together in all its moods of a beautiful romance.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...

(Kishore) Char Paise (1955)

I am not sure who this music director B.D. Burman is. Did he give music to any other movies besides this one? Is he realted to the legendary Burmans? If someone knows more, please enlighten. Thanks.

Irrespective of who this music director is, this album has some nice songs by Lata. Of her four solos, I like three of them. Only weak song by Lata is "Tere Liye". Kishore has only one song, but it is just a routine song for him. Also, Asha's song is not that bad either.

(Dilip) Aan (1952)

Here is another winner from early 50's. "Aan" was made on a grand scale by Mehboob Khan Saab. It was one of those first full length color movies. For technical as well as financial reasons, it was shot in 16mm first, per one of our fellow members, Vijay. Later it was blown up to 35mm.

Dilip Saab, who played one tragic role after another until this movie, in a refreshingly welcome departure plays a lighter role. A great actor he is, this transformation from tragedy to comedy he does so effortlessly. He was absolutely entertaining as a swashbuckling hero.

In a book on Mehboob Saab, its author tells the fierce competition Mehboob Saab felt from young Raj Kapoor, the filmmaker. Remember that another great 1952 movie,"Awara"? The dream sequence picturized in that movie is still used as a yardstick even today for similar sequences in movies. For Mehboob Saab also, in a sense bigger was better. This time around it was "Aan".

Nargis was originally cast to play the leading lady in "Aan." But with Nargis firmly entrenched in Raj Kapoor's camp, was not easily available. So instead of waiting for her becoming free to act in his movie, Mehboob Saab went lookig for a new leading lady instead. He didn't need to go too far. He elected Nadira, his friend's daughter, to be the leading lady.

"Aan" was a runaway hit. Nadira however, in her subsequent outings as an actress, never enjoyed the same sucess as she did for "Aan." She did make an occasional good movie, one notable being "Julie" that fetched her a best supporting actress award from Filmfare. Incidentally, Nadira was the first Bombay film personality to own a Rolls Royce.

All songs I am uploading are from an original sound track album CD except a couple that were contributed by the members of this Forum. Thank you. Because of the number of songs, I will upload them in back-to-back two posts.

(Kishore) Pehli Jhalak (1955)

M.V. Raman, the producer and director of many hit Tamil and Hindi Films, introduced Vyjayanti Mala in Tamil movies as well as Hindi movies. In most of the movies made in Hindi that he directed, he invariably paired Vyjayanti with Kishoreda. This is another example of such a movie. Several of these movies were commercial successes. One common theme among these movies was Kishoreda's slapstick comedy and Vyjayanti's display of her dancing skills. Almost all of them had very good music. Also, Rajinder Krishan wrote lyrics for most of them.

There are several songs in this movie with Lata sharing bulk of them. Kishoreda has only song that was quite a routine for him, very listless in my opinion. But the standout song of the album is the one by Hemantda, "Zameen Chal Rahi Hai". Beautiful. This is least surprising. Whenever music director C. Ramchandra called on Hemantada's name, the results were spectacular. Songs from the musical extravaganza "Anarkali (1953)" and his duet with Lata in "Nastik (1955)" immediately come to mind.

I am uploading songs of "Pehli Jhalak" in two posts, with the second post consisting of some extended versions. Here is the first set of songs ...

(Dilip) Daag (1952)

Here is yet another beautiful album from the energetic music duo Shankar & Jaikishan, very early in their career. Talat Saab (picture attached) sings four songs, all just utterly beautiful.

This movie was made by Amiya Chakraborty who was responsible for so many fine movies, like "Patita (1953)", "Kathputli (1957)", "Dekh Kabira Roya (1957)", and others. "Daag" deals with the subject of an alcoholic who has difficult time kicking the addiction. Dilip Saab plays the alcoholic for the performance of which he won the Filmfare Best Actor Award. When I saw the movie recently, I felt something was missing from Dilip Saab's performance. It didn't have the same depth or pathos he usually brings to his roles. I think it could have been better. Time and again Dilip Saab proved that he is capable of bringing this to his performances in so many other movies. May be it was because the whole movie has this mood of depression. Either way, I am convinced that this probably served as a precursor to that memorable winning performance from the thespian when he played a heart broken alcoholic lover later in Bimalda's classic film "Devdas (1955)".

SJ who debuted as fulltime music directors only a few years back in 1949 with Raj Kapoor's "Barsaat" were bursting with bubbly energy and this clearly translates into some of the magic of their music they left as their legacy behind for all of us to savor and enjoy.

(Dilip) Sangdil (1952)

In a 20-year period Sajjad Hussain, the music director of this film did only 14 films. This is mainly because, though recognized as a brilliant composer, he had problems getting along with people. He was one of the great players of Mandolin on which he could play Indian classical music. Apparently this in itself was a tribute to his genius. He was expert in several other instruments including flute, veena, violin, piano, and sitar.

It was Meena Kumari’s father who introduced him to the film world. His very first film “Dost” made in 1944 became famous because of the hit songs he composed for its heroine, Noor Jehan.

The genius he was, he always got into trouble with his fellow workers. Many such ctories have been shared here by the members before so there is no reason to repeat them again. But this attitude towards people he worked with did have a direct effect on his professional career. The net result is that Sajjad Hussain's entire repertoire includes less than 100 songs in 14 or so odd films. But almost all his compositions were huge hits. Composer Anil Biswas had paid a great tribute to him saying that Sajjad Hussain was the only original composer Hindi cinema has known. Comin from Anilda, that says something about the man.

This film was adapted from the classic English novel "Jane Eyre" published in 1847 by Charlotte Bronte under the pen name of Currer Bell. It was made into a movie in Hollywood several times. The interesting subplot of this movie is the real life romance between the leading pair Madhubala and Dilip.

Here is the first set of songs ...

"Sangdil" is an outstanding album. "Dil me sama gaye sajan" is such a lovely melody and both
Lata and Talat are outstanding. But the true gems in the film for me are
  1. Lata's divine rendition of "Woh to chale gaye ae dil yaad se unki pyaar kar". There was a time when I first discovered this song years back that I listened to it over and over again. I just wish the song had another verse so that it would keep going on. There is one other Lata/Sajjad combo that has a similar effect on me "Ae diruba" from "Rustom Sohrab".
  2. The Asha/Geeta duet "Dharti se door gore baadaloN ke paar aaja" is a duet of theirs unlike very few others. Usually, it was SDB or OPN who got them to do duets and those were lovely but quite different in emotion. This one is a truly meeTha number (and if I remember right, picturized on the kid versions of the Dilip and Madhubala characters.

The film itself is a not-so-bad adaptation of "Jane Eyre". But SP, as far as I can recall, actress Shammi
has a role in the film, and I think Leela Chitnis too. But there is no Dara Singh (unless he was so young
that I did not recognize him).

Very well stated, SB. I haven't seen the movie. I wish I did. I took the cast information details from the internet. That easily could be in error. For now, I leave Dara's name there as I don't see any harm being done.

Cheers,
S

"Sangdil" is an outstanding album. "Dil me sama gaye sajan" is such a lovely melody and both

Thanks for the detailed analysis SB. My vote goes to another song as well. "Darshan pyaasi aayi daasi" is a lovely solo by Geeta ji under the baton of Sajjad Hussain. Filmed on Madhubala and chorus dancers, this song has the unusual combination of a bhajan and a dance number. The video of this song is available here:

Also, here is a second part of the song "Dharti se door gore" a 38 second long snippet in the film, probably available only on the film soundtrack. Thanks to our dear friend Anupama who shared this rare snippet on our YT channel

I agree with both you gents but have to say that Darshan Pyaasi is and always has been my favourite Geeta Dutt and Sajjad Hussein song. Lots of wonderful songs in this film, but Darshan was the stand-out. This was Dilip's first role in a Bronte sister film - Jane Eyre. He later appeared in the other sister, Emily's Wuthering Heights as the Indian equivalent of Heathcliff. The film was Dil Diya Dard Liya.

(Dev) Do Sitare (1951)

Here is Anilda's beautiful album. There are several nice songs in this album. All songs are by the courtesy of the Forum members. Please be warned that a couple of songs are of inferior quality. Even multiple cleanings couldn't help get rid of that static hiss.

This is another movie starring the hot pair of Suraiya & Dev. Suraiya has three solos, just beautiful. Another solo I like is that of Meena Kapoor. A beautiful rendering.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

(Dilip) Footpath (1953)

Here is one of the early albums of Khayyam Saab that has some very nice songs. Standout tracks in the album are Talat Saab's solo "Shaam-E-Gham" and Asha's "Suhaana Hai". All these songs are by the courtesy of the Forum members. Thank you. Hare are these songs ...

As you have rightly mentioned, the song "Sham E Gham ki Qasam" is the highlight of the album. IMHO, it is one of the top notch songs of Talat sahab! Majrooh sahab, Khayyam sahab and Talat sahab have given us this timeless classic!

A little trivia about the song "Kaisa jaadu daala re" from the film Foot Paath (1953). I recently saw the video of this song on YT and was shocked at the "bold" presentation on the screen!

Wow, that is "bold" (I like the word) for a Hindi film, by any standards. I guess it is not a big deal for films from the 90s and later, but I cannot recall a scene like this even in mainstream cinema in the 80s. It is not like there is anything obscene per-se, but it is forward for the times and the culture.

Posted by: parag_sankla May 28 2010, 08:10 AM

SB
Of course it is filmed very nicely and there is nothing obscene or anything like that (not even titillating). I was just hit by the surprise element of it..

Posted by: swarapriya May 28 2010, 06:27 PM

Parag & SB, this indeed was very surprising to me. One would think that folks would flock to see this movie for a scene like this. But the movie was a commercial failure. That just shows that people can see through the gloss and separate class.

My 2 paise worth.

(Kishore) Bhagam Bhag (1956)

The comedian-actor Bhagwan who made a fortune with "Albela" in 1951, besides acting in it which he produced as well as directed, squandered away most of his wealth to near bankruptcy on a string of movies he made that didn't capture the same magic. Comparitively speaking, this movie which he also produced and directed, did modest business mainly beacuse of some fine music and the chemistry between Kishoreda and Bhagwan.

I am uploading all of the songs from this album. The quality of some of the songs is not up to the mark. I tried to clean them but originals I downloaded were so bad, it only helped a bit. Also, in some songs there are skips. Hoever, with all these real problems, the listening pleasue of these songs is not completely lost as overall quality is still bearable.

There are several nice tracks in this album. I like both of the songs sung by Rai Saab and Kishoreda together. The song by Rafi Saab and Batish is also worth noting.

Now for the details of these songs and the songs themselves ...

Here are these songs ...

I too don't know anything about this MD, except that he was the MD for this film. But, per my record, his name is V D Varmaan...

May be someone else can illuminate on this if they have any information about this.

B. D. Burman has given music for only this film . He is no way related to "Burmans' family. Lata ji is very fond of him.

This album was composed by Chic Chocolate, a long time associate of music director C. Ramchandra who was the music supervisor for this movie. I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. All songs are by the courtesy of the Forum members. Thank you all very very much.

I remember names of those who contributed couple of these songs. The duet "Aisa Kya Kasoor" by Lata and Chitalkar was contributed by our fellow member Abhay. The song "Door Hi Se" by Lata was contributed by R.P. Nawani. My thanks to both of them.
