Faraaj Bhai,

These were recorded in 1962.

I had wrongly described the raag of composition in Post No. 1 as Madhyamavati (it is a raag in Carnatic Music). It should have been Raag Madhuvanti. The post has been corrected now.

Gajananrao Joshi was an eminent vocalist as well as an accomplished violinist in the Indian Classical Music world. Recordings of his full concerts are not easily available. While I am uploading a couple of snippets of a live concert to give a feel of his singing, I am still looking out for recording of his full concert. I earnestly request anybody having such a recording of Gajananbuva Joshi to please share it with us.

I love violin. In my opinion, along with Sarangi, violin is the instrument which comes closest to vocal singing. However, not many violinists have become popular in Indian Classical Music world. The names that come to mind are N. Rajam, V. G. Jog, Gajanan Rao Joshi. Though some South Indian Carnatic violints have also given concerts in Indian Classical Music style (e.g. M. S. Gopalakrishnan), I feel that their concerts are not so rich in musical content, probably because their base is essentially in carnatic system of music.

It is very important for an instrumental classical musician to have undergone rigorous vocal singing training. Gajanan Rao Joshi was basically a vocal singer and due to certain circumstances (on the insistence of a royal patron) picked up violin. Probably this is what made Gajanan Rao's violin recital worth listening. Another example is Ustad Vilayat Khan, who as I understand, used to break into vocal singing even when giving a Sitar recital.

Let me add that all these are my personal opinion.

I like N. Rajam's violin recital. She was a disciple of Pt. Omkarnath Thakur. Uploading her recital - Rag Bageshri.

I agree with you RajanCS. I also prefer the North Indian style but I have a real soft spot for Lakshminarayan Subramaniam who is an extraordinarily gifted carnatic violinist. In case you haven't heard it, I recommend the album Beyond (1996) for the tracks Weeping Soul and Wandering Saint. These haunting pieces really capture the soul of Indian music.

Also, I made a post in the Hindustani Violinists, A rare breed thread listing some wonderful Hindustani violinists which you may find useful. Most notable are Prabhakar Jog (try Gaanara Violin - Bhaktigeete Volume 6) and Indrayudh Bose (try Ahir Bhairav, Jog 2007).

I have all of these albums and can post then as torrents if you wish (bitrate and size too high for HF).

Sincere thanks for your comments and suggestions. In fact I was also following the thread - Hindustani Violinists, A rare breed - closely. I had also seen your posts mentioned above. I have spoken to my friend who is himself a violinist. I understand from him that Prabhakar Jog used to give public performance called Gaanare Violin (Singing Violin). I will take the CDs from him and listen.

The Bhairavi rendition was recorded in 1965 when Pt. Omkarnath Thakur gave a public performance. Bhairavi, needless to say, was the concluding piece in that program. Bhimpalas was the main raag sung by him in that program. In line with the forum policy, the rar file is split into 2 parts so that each part is less than 20 MB.

Sorry for butting into your thread. I want to use existing threads. I don't know where else to put this. It is a release from AIR of some archival material. I vaguely remember the name of Pandit Krishanrao Shankar Pandit. Here is a CD rip of this musician.

Krishnarao Shankar Pandit
Krishnarao Shankar Pandit`s name occupies an important place in the gharana (Gwalior) of Haddu Khan.
He was born on 26th July 1893 in an illustrious family of musicians of Gwalior.
He received his early musical tutelage from his father, Shankarrao Pandit, who was a legend in himself,
being the disciple of the great Ustad Haddu Khan and Ustad Nathu Khan - the innovators of the Gwalior style
and then Nathu Khan`s son Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Benefiting from an extensive and intensive training from his father,
Krishnarao`s extraordinary regimen included pre dawn practice in the woods to perfect swara, laya and breath control.
He was taught wrestling, gymnastics, yoga and swimming to develop stamina, and a range of three octaves.

A distinguished and versatile musician, with a rich repertoire, Krishna Rao was equally at home in Khayal, Tappa and Tarana.
He was considered a master of `Layakari`. Krishnarao became a well-known singer at an early age.
In 1921 he was awarded the title Gayak Shiromani at the All India Congress. For a while, Krishnarao Shankar Pandit served as
Court Musician in the court of Madhavrao Scindia of Gwalior. He also opened a music school in Gwalior, Shankar Gandharva Mahavidyalaya,
in 1914. He was a respected performer for over thirty years and the various positions of distinction he held also included State Musician
of the erstwhile State of Satara (Maharashtra), Emeritus Professor of Madhav Music College, Gwalior and Producer Emeritus All India Radio
and Doordarshan. For his immense contribution to the world of classical music, he received numerous awards including the Padma Bhushan
in 1973 and the Tansen award in 1980.
His disciples included Laxman Krishnarao Pandit (son), Prof. Sharadchandra Arolkar, Balasaheb Poochwale, Meeta Pandit (grand daughter).
He evolved an easy and independent notation system in 1914 and also published several books and articles in different journals & magazines.

Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit breathed his last on 22nd August, 1989 at Gwalior.

Nandi,

Thanks for sharing these Gajanan Rao's concerts - vocal as well as violin. I have heard his vocal singing in a private concert in Mahim, Mumbai more than 30 years ago. However, I used to hear violin programs on AIR only.

I am not sure why you are addressing him as "Prof". I did not know he was associated with any music college.

From what I have read about her, Badi Motibai deserves a thread of her own as she was a very important and prominent singer of her time. However due to the paucity of surviving recordings, this is all I can find on her.

If it had been an animal, the vichitra veena would have been a threatened species by now. And if women vichitra
veena artistes are not an extinct breed today, it is thanks to 28-year-old Radhika Budhkar.
It is not difficult to see why the vichitra veena is played so rarely and then too only by men. It is a huge instrument,
with two voluminous gourds and an unwieldy shape that does not allow it to be rested on the body. It is laid flat on
the ground and played with the artiste's arms bent in the air, and this means using considerable bicep power to
pull off a long concert. It has no frets to guide the player and the notes have to be wrung out with a large glass
pebble slid along the strings. Predictably, it needs rigorous riyaaz and a very practised ear to master the vichitra veena.
This petite Maharashtrian, who grew up in Gwalior, does not seem a likely candidate to carry the bulky burden
of this heritage. But she has tremendous love for the art that she took six years to master. "Leave aside women,
there are less than half a dozen male artistes playing the instrument today," says Budhkar, who opened the
Veenapani Institute of Music in Navi Mumbai last month, when she moved to the city with her husband and daughter.

Budhkar comes from a family of versatile musicians who migrated to Gwalior several generations ago.
Her grandfather Balabhau Umdekar was a court musician and her father played the rudra veena. Their home was like
a small museum, stacked with rare and antique instruments. It was in this collection, as a child of six, that Budhkar
stumbled on the vichitra veena. She was by then already learning the sitar and vocal music. "I could have chosen to
stick to the safe path with sitar or singing, but I told my father I wanted to master an art that few people do. My father
suggested that I try the rare vichitra veena lying at home," recalls Budhkar. Through her teens she would wake up at
3:30 am and work hard at the instrument. "Through school and college I made do with three or four hours of sleep.
This is a tough art to master because you can easily go wrong with no frets to keep your notes in place," she says.
Though she plays a fairly archaic instrument, Budhkar's musical sensibilities are modern. She had a new instrument
crafted and modified to her specifications by the famous Mangala Prasad Sharma of Kolkata. She had the pitch of
her veena raised closer to the sound produced by the sitar which the audiences are more familiar with. Instead of the
clunky glass pebble that tends to erode the strings, she uses a shaligram stone.
These changes made it possible for her to wring out faster taans from the vichitra veena, a very tough feat to pull off.
"People have this dull image of a veena concert. They see it as an intimidating, somber, obtuse instrument.Why not
adapt it to make it more audience friendly? Audiences are now used to musical showmanship at concerts: fast-paced
layakari, interactive sawal jawab, fusion work... Of course I play in the alaap and jod in the traditional format, but if I
say that I will only stick to the dhrupad form traditionally followed by veena players, I will lose the GenNext audiences,
" she says.
Budhkar is passionate about the need to connect with the youth. She is among the few classical musicians to run

Girija Devi is one of India's greatest vocalists. One of the last masters of the Purab ang gayaki tradition of the Banares Gharana, Devi has been equally effective singing in the traditional 18th century classical style of khyal as well as semi-classical styles such as thumri, tappa, kajri, dadra, and chaiti. The recipient of the prestigious Padmashree Award from the president of India in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 1989, she has received the Sangeet Natak Academy Awards of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Born in Varanasi (formerly Benares), an ancient cultural/religious center located on the left bank of the Ganges River, Devi has been singing much of her life. Studying with influential vocalist and sarangi player Pandit Sarju Prasad from the age of five, she later continued her studies with Pandit Chandra Misra. Making her debut appearance in 1949 during a recital that was broadcast by the All India radio station in Allahabad, Devi performed her first concert a year later. Teaching at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy from its inception in the early '90s, Devi served as guru for many students, including Dalia Rahut, Jayita Pandey, and Satyanarayan Misra, the son of her own guru, Pandit Sarju Prasad. Mubarak Ali Khan is a leading exponent of classical music in Pakistan and belongs to a traditional family
of vocalists representing the Shamchaurasi Gharana. He was groomed in classical music by his uncle
Ustad Ghazanfar Khan alias Rajjhu Khan. It was during this apprenticeship that Mubarak Ali became influenced
by the style of Ustad Amir Khan of Indore. His style ably blends the two traditions of Shamchaurasi Gharana with
that of Ustad Amir Khan. In the vilambit part of his performance, his elaboration and development of the raag
displays the grandeur of the style of Ustad Amir Khan whilst in the drut tempo, his sargam and taan patterns
