Madan Mohan was born & bout-up in Bagdad. After graduation he join British Royal Air-force as Pilot in the category of Non Commissioned Officer. During 2nd World War he was posted at Burma-Front. He was the only son of shri Roy Bahadur Chunnilal Kohli - founder & owner of FILMISTAN STUDIO at Goregoan(West),Mumbai. (It is still there). He asked Madan to leave Air Force & settle at Mumbai. After leaving Air Force , Madanji joined All India Radio as announcer at Lucknow. There he came in contact with Begum Akhtar along many others music mastereo.

Being the owner of studio Roy Bahadur sahab was having very good contacts & influence in film industries so he called Madan back to Bombay & asked him to act as Hero in Film. Madanji was very handsome. But Madanji denied this offer, instead of this he showed his interest for composing the music & insisted for that. Being the only son, Roy Sahab agreed.

In the film industry gossip was flashed.
.’Bigda shazada hai, music compose karke baap ka paisa barbaad karega’.
Because he has never learned ABC of Music from any where.

Madan Mohan’s first film, as music director was released in 1950, film was not hit but the songs were super-duper hit. The film was – Aankhen’. People still remember the song …

Mori Attaria Pe Kaaga Bole
Mora Jiyaraa Dole
Koi Aa Rahaa Hai.

After this Madan never looked back.

I still wonder, without learning music how he become one among the GREAT composers. ???????

AFSAANE AISE HEE BANTE HAIN !!!!.

Place-Prithvi Theater
Period-1948-49
Workmen were preparing a set for a scene , one worker was cutting a wood piece with his saw & also singing a song in folk tune , the wording was
Amuva Ka Ped Hai
Vahin Pe Munder Hai
Aaja More Balmaa
Ab Kahe Ki Der Hai.

Shanker-Jaykishan were standing nearby , they heard & liked the tune. During Lunch Time SJ came out of Prithvi Theater & went nearby shop of ‘chanawala’ to have ‘channa-sing(groundnut)’ .
While eating jaykishan was singing the same tune – da da da d d d, La La La L L L….
& then he told Shankar ‘Kuch ache se Word mil jayen to acchee tune banegi’
Beside them. one handkerchief seller was selling different type of ‘Rumaals’ which were kept in a inversed open umbrella. After hearing Jaikishan he told ‘ Sahab is ke liye ye word bahut acche baitenge….

Jiyaa Beqraar Hai
Chaayee Bahar Hai
Aa Ja More Balma
Tera Intezaar Hai.

Oh! yes yes,. Kya Naam hai Tera ?
Hasrat.
Bhai Hasrat apni dukaan band kar aur chal hamaare saath.

During Lunch .two person, SJ came out from the theater.
After Lunch three person, SJ&Hasrat came inside the theater.

That was an amazing read. Bahut shukriya. Kaisa afsaana hai. Thank you so much.
I do have one question. I have always known that Madan Mohan composed music for Laila Majnu. But a few weeks ago, when I found the LP cover pic for the film, I saw that it says music composed by Madan Mohan & Jaidev. Being naive, I don't know much about it. Can you tell me if this is the case? Did those 2 often work together?

Jaidev finished the compositions since Madan Mohan passed away before the movie was released.

Thank you hits bhai. I did not know that at all. That's sad. That's got to be my favorite album of theirs. Thanks also for all the correct tagging information.

You are welcome. In fact, not one, but two of his biggest hits (commercially speaking, of course) were released after his death - Laila Majnu and Mausam.

That made some interesting read! I am a novice here. I recently heard a song for the first time. It was composed by Madan Mohanji and sung by Lata mangeshkar. The song is 'Ja Re Badra Bairi Ja'. I am totally hooked to this song:) Amazing composition and amazing singer!
