Australia v/s Netherlands - 18th March 2007

As anybody imagined, it was a one-sided match. Netherlands, after giving up to South Africa for 221 runs, again had to face a shameful defeat from the mightiest Australia for 229 runs. Australia’s BJ Hodge was selected the Player of the Match. Hodge outperformed the stunning Ponting, setting a new high, 123 runs, for the Aussies.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. With the highest confidence and enthusiasm, Gilchrist and Hayden opened the match at the Warner Park, Bassetterre, St.Kitts. The bowling started with Jonkman of the Dutch team. Gilchrist set out his journey for 4’s in the first over itself. Reekers followed in the next over to try his hand at the influential Aussies, but the story was not different at all. Both the batsmen faced the balls with composure, till Hayden yielded to de Leede in the 12 th over. Hayden scored 29 off 34 balls.

Capatain’s entry added cheers in the stadium. Ponting was welcomed by ten Doeschate; Ponting replied with two successive 4’s in the first over itself. However, the captain lost his grip by the determined Doeschate when he got a wonderful catch of the captain’s ball, bowled by himself. It set the end of the captain’s performance in the second ODI of the ICC World Cup 2007. Ponting contributed a less significant 23 for the gigantic Aussies.

Clarke and Hedge together dominated the entire match. Hodge entered after the dismissal of Ponting and scored his historical 123 runs until he got out by Borren in the 48 th over. The stadium witnessed an appalling fall of Hodge when he tried to sweep another 6, immediately after the previous one. Alas! The ball came down with an unexpected hit on the stump, and Hodge was out.

However, Clarke managed to stay till the end scoring an awesome 93 off 85 balls while Watson and Hussey contributed 12 and 2 each. Netherland’s de Leede and Doeschate got two wickets each of Australia, other than that of Hodge.

Having to achieve a heavy target of 359 runs, Netherlands opened with Zuiderent and DJ Reekers. Though Reekers sacrificed the first wicket of the Dutch at the 7th over, he managed to get 25 runs off 19 balls, including five 4’s. Reekers was getting a grip of game from Bracken and Tait, and delivered the wonderful 4’s one after another when he yielded to a low ball from Bracken.

The three batsmen who followed, including captian Troost, did not contribute anything to the cache of the Netherlands. Compared to a low 5 runs in the last match against South Aftrica, this time it was a total nil from the captain’s bat.

Bunge, Borren and Leede managed a comparatively better performance in the Dutch team, scoring 33, 24, and 14 respectively. Bungee and Borren each hit four 4’s and one 6. It was a pleasant experience to watch them play the boundaries. However, the mightiest Australian bowlers relegated their talents. Hogg claimed the dismissal of de Leede and Borren, while McGrath got Bunge out by an lbw. The nervous Netherlands had the worst lbw’s hit in their match against Australia. Five of their batsmen got out by lbw in yesterday’s match.

Netherlands needs to work out better strategies to stay in contention for ICC membership.

England v/s Canada - 18th March 2007

The 11th ODI of the ICC World Cup 2007 was a comeback day for England. The team won against Canada for 51 runs. PD Collingwood of team England was selected as the Player of the Match. He scored 62 runs from 48 balls that was studded with four 4’s and one 6.

England was defeated by New Zealand by 6 wickets in their first match. Yesterday’s match was noted for a praiseworthy performance of the team against Canada. The batsmen contributed significantly to the winning score.

Canada , after winning the toss, elected to field first. The openers, EC Joyce and captain Vaughan set a decent pace for the innings. By the time the first wicket of Vaughan fell in the 20th over, the duo had together achieved a century partnership.

IR Bell entered next, managed to stay for 13 overs, but could not grapple with the powerful bowling spirit of Dhaniram. He was caught by Codrington after scoring 28 runs off 44 balls. The Collinwood spirit added enthusiasm to the England fans, when he entered after the sad dismissal of Joyce. Joyce could not manage the pressure of the nagging length of Dhaniram, and as he tried for a reverse sweep, the ball went and hit the stump.

Collingwood understood the situation well and faced the Canadian bowlers adamantly. Dhaniram tried his level best, followed by Davison, Codrington, Samad, Bhatti and Cummins. They all gave up when the England innings ended after 50 overs. They set a target of 280 runs for the Canadian team. Not to forget, Bopara and Nixon had contributed 29 and 23 runs respectively by then.

Dhaniram, a wonderful bowler, is the hope for Canada team. In his last match against Kenya, he had presented a decent performance, both in batting and bowling. This time too, he managed to grab three important wickets, those of Joyce, Bell and Pieterson. Hats off to Dhaniram!

Canada ’s opening match did not show a great effort by the batsmen. Here also, captain entered first along with Barnett. However, the Beausejour Stadium did not favor the team, the wicket of Barnett fell at the very beginning, in the second over, with Barnett contributing 7 runs from 7 balls, including one 4. He was bowled out by Plunkett at the beginning of the 6 th over.

The entry of Bagai too did not find much scope. Bagai, who had managed 19 runs in his match against Kenya, had to be satisfied with just 6 runs.

The major contribution was from Samad and Mulla. Samad managed 36 runs off 67 balls and Mulla added the highest 62 from 48, with four 4’s and one 6. The cautious effort of Mulla saved him to face the bowling challenges, until the unyielding Bopara gave him a thorough shot resulting his sad retreat. Dhaniram’s entry had added a hope to the recovery of the team. Though he contributed a decent 30 runs off 33 balls until he got run out in the 48 th over, the team could not maintain a desirable run rate. The match ended for 228 at the end of 50 overs.

Bopara and Plunkett of England team grabbed two wickets each, and Paneswar and Anderson managed one each.
