Hamara Forums _ Education World _ Please Recomend Universities In The Us / Canada

Posted by: billu Sep 21 2006, 11:31 PM

My eldest son is planning to study Engineering / Computers next year after completing his 10 + 2 from CBSE.

Could you please recomend the best universities - rather the best value universities in the midwest and north region of the US and /or the Ontario region of Canada.

If any one has studied or is still a student in this region I would definitely like to hear from you. Please reply on the forum or you may PM me.

I have not studied here but know few people who have. I know Jags has so he can be your best bet.
Midwest has Ohio Sate univ and then you have Penn State univ.
These are good universities, more so if you are looking for any kind of funding then look for smaller universities.

there are many: don't know which would be better for computer science, here are few:

university of michigan(madison and ann arbor ), university of wachington, seattle,
university of california, johns hopkins university, university of illinois, iowa state univ,
georgia tech, floria state univ, univ of florida, florida insti of tech, penn state, ohio state ( as marci ji said )

amongst the top:

mit, stanford, harvard, california berkeley, cornell, yale, chicago, cal tech, princeton, columbia,

plz look for your choice of universities in the respective subjects. top 50, top 100, top 200 ???

here is a list for top 500 universities in the world. ( u will get top 100 north/latin american universities,
top 100 european universities, top 100 asia pacific universities )

http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2004/top500list.htm

Thanks Marcilo and Nature,

Nature I am definitely looking at some of the Universities you have mentioned, I want my son to stay in the Noth West - somewhere near to Toronto as my brother is there.

I have searched through the top universities in that region using the USnews university rating.

If you have any specific info or have attended any of these universities yourself plz let me know.

For Engineering/Computers, I would recommend Waterloo and McMaster, they are amongst the top schools for that program.

I am currently studying Hons. Economics at York University in Toronto, York is recognized as the best for business along with Western.

Thanks Princeali

I am seriously considering Waterloo as it was also recomended by my brother who is in Canada.

Do you think there is any advantage in a US degree over a Canadian degree?

I don't think there is any advantage in having a US degree over a Canadian degree. Canadian degree's are recognized around the world, our education system is of high standard.

no specific idea billu ji. important thing is the rank of the university whether it is canada or usa.
look for universities which are of higher rank and the subject too is important.

few more universities are: university of virginia, university of iowa, carnegie mellon university,
suny ( stony brooke ), louisiana state university, university of kansas, kansas state univeristy.

few good univ from ontario, canada: univ of toronto, queen's univ, york univ, univ of ottawa, univ of waterloo
( as prince ali saheb mentioned )
here is a list: http://www.osca.ca/univ.htm

stony brooke, louisiana state univ are very good. if u want in north america/ontario then select accordingly

don't worry billu ji. choose some universities. u may consult some prof. and app accordingly.
apply to many universities ( around 10-15 say ), the chances of getting admission will be very high.

like: app to 5 univ from top 30, 5 from top 50, 5 from top 100 this way.

good luck. wish everything will be fine.

Nature,
Thanks for your detailed reply, I am working in a similar approach as you have suggested to apply to all levels of universities to ensure addmission.

My son will appear in the SAT very shortly and he has already appeared in the TOFEL. Once the exams are done we will finalize our list.

Sincere thanks again for taking time out to write.

I will post any questions if needed.

Billu Ji,
I was reading through some posts. Seems your son would be applying to undergrad as opposed to grad school that I studied from. A good way to start off is to look at sites like
www.usnews.com
www.princetonreview.com.
They will give u a good idea about the engg programs.

Typically, U/G programs in the US dont pay any schols.so that might be a factor to look at. I would say schools in Texas are among the less expensive schools with good education. Rankings do not matter a lot. If u app to schools in top 50, u shld be good to go.
Rankings rather working with certain faculty members matters when applying to gradschools that too more for PhDs.

Some good universities in the Ontario province itself - University of Toronto and the University of Windsor.
South of the US-Canada border, in the State of New York there are a number of universities in the SUNY system - Buffalo is probably the closest and good value, also Albany and Binghamton (Stony Brook is near NY city I think).

Thanks Fiftysomeone and imJagdish

I am considering University of Waterloo in Canada. In the US I am considering the New Jersy Institute of Technology and the Fairleigh Dickinson University and the North Western University in Boston.

Also does any one have any experience of the Co Op System which is in force at some of these institutes.

Waterloo and McMaster are the best Universities in Ontario! UFT (University of Toronto) isnt bad either!
I took Co-op in my first year @ University of Toronto, its like any other co-op system around the globe. They assign you some work OR they ask you to go to some place related to your field!
I can take guarantee of UFT!! cool.gif

I heard UCLA is a very good institute @ Cali dry.gif

Thanks Zaira for your input.

Do you get paid when you work under the Coop System and is that Work counted as Work Experience.

Definitely UCLA is a good school but we are targeting the Northeast of US or Ontario.

Nope, you dont get paid for Co-op! -- Yes it does count as ur working experience n it really succors in obtaining a reasonable job in future!!--

If ur son has already gotten the offer from Waterloo then i would say it would be really unwise to turn it down coz Waterloo is the top University of Canada -- Anyone can get into UFT, Mcmaster, York but very few ppl receive Waterloo's invitation!!--

Posted by: sani_thakur May 4 2007, 11:47 AM

Well - this is very late -- but just to be clear, it's not true that one dosen't get paid for co-operative work.

You DO get paid for co-op (internship). I did co-op. So did a ton of students I know. We all got paid smile1.gif

The exception would be if your co-op contract says you are volunteering, of course!
