25 Years Of Hum Log, First serial to be telecast on DD Options

I had heard so much abt this serial from elders. and laterz in90s I saw the repeat telecast of thsi serial (DD3?), I liked it immensly ! Specially the way they had show a t ypical middle class family ! that was great !. Though niow I dont recall many of the characters.

25 years on, viewers still remember 'Hum Log'
On a quiet summer evening in 1984, Basesar Ram and his family entered Indian drawing rooms and became part of every home with a

television set. Now exactly 25 years later, Badki, Chhutki, Dadi, Nanhe and every other character of Doordarshan’s first soap, ‘Hum Log’, continue to be remembered fondly.

Launched on July 7, 1984, ‘Hum Log’ had an average viewership of 50 million per episode. In a research paper, Arvind Singhal and Evertt M Rogers say that even in non-Hindi speaking regions the soap’s rating was between 20 and 40% while in North India it ranged between 60 and 90%. Veteran actor Ashok Kumar, who delivered an epilogue at the end of each episode, got nearly 400,000 letters in response.

Abhinav Chaturvedi, who played Nanhe, recalls that during a trip to Los Angeles in 1987, he walked into a Gujarati shop to buy some namkeen. “I was bemused to find the complete set of 156 episodes of the serial on VHS. It blew my mind,� he says.

Ashok Kumar, a star in his own right, confessed to Singhal, a professor of communication and social change at the University of Texas that “18 months of Hum Log did more to (his) popularity than 50 years of films.�

Young boys and girls wrote to Kumar pleading him to convince their parents that they be allowed to marry the man/woman of their choice. Even though the serial ended in 1985, Kumar kept receiving occasional letters as late as 1998.

Former I&B secretary Bhaskar Ghose says, “Hum Log was a social content soap opera.� The idea then was entertainment with education. Broadcast in Hindi for 17 months (between 1984-85) on national DD through 156 episodes at 9pm slot, the soap centred on the joys and sorrows of the Rams, a lower-middle class joint family of three generations.

It’s 25 years since. But even in the age of 200 channels, Basesar Ram and his family continue to occupy a place in the hearts of the viewers.
