Memories

By Ravi Patil

‘Tu jahaan jahaan chalega mera saaya saath hoga...’. The line reflects the creator of Lata Mangeshkar classic from Mera Saaya.
His memories will always keep us company as consistently as a shadow does. Yes, the genius composer is none other than Madan Mohan, whose melodious compositions comfort our minds with a strange peace.

Madan Mohan occupies a very special place in the annals of the history of Indian film music. Madan Mohan’s musical journey began with the film Aankhen in 1950, and it was producer-director Devendra Goel who gave Madan Mohan the first break. The music got noticed with classy numbers like ‘Preet lagake maine ye phal paaya...’ by Mukesh, ‘Mori atariya pe kaaga bole...’ by Meena Kapoor and ‘Hum ishq mein barbaad hain...’ by Mohd.Rafi. Followed Ada, the film with which Lata Mangeshkar began her long-lasting and formidable bond with Madan Mohan. Ada consisted of Lata winners like ‘Sanwari soorat man bhaaye re piya tori...’ and ‘Aankhon aankhon mein unse pyar ho gaya...’, not to forget the touching ‘Preetam meri duniya mein...’. Close on the heels of Ada came Aashiana with Lata charmers like ‘Tum chaand ke saath chale aao...’ , ‘Samaa hai bahaar ka...’ and ‘Mukh mod na lena saajna...’.

In spite of these good starts, it took quite a while for Madan Mohan to break into the big league. Mohan Kumar’s Anpadh in the early 60s shot Madan Mohan to the peak of popularity with his compositions for Lata Mangeshkar topping charts, such as ‘Aap ki nazron ne samjha pyar ke kaabil mujhe’ , ‘Hai issi mein pyar ki aabroo...’ and ‘Jiya le gayo ji mora saanwariya...‘.Anpadh established Madan Mohan as a frontline composer, thus making him an alternative name for ghazal.

Some of the other time-immemorial melodies from the Madan Mohan - Lata Mangeshkar team are ‘Hum pyar mein jalnewaalon ko...’ (Jailor) , ‘Tu pyar kare ya thukraye...’(Dekh Kabira Roya) , ‘Agar mujhse mohabbat hain...’ (Aap Ki Parchhaiyan) , ‘Dil unko uthake de diya ...’ (Baap Bete) , ‘Nainon mein pyar dole dil ka qaraar dole...’ (Sheroo),‘Woh jo milte the kabhi...’ (Akeli Mat Jaiyo) , ‘Yun hasraton ke daag...’ and ‘Unko shikayat hai ...’ (Adalat) , ‘Woh chup rahe to mere dil ke daag jalte hain...’ (Jahan Ara) , ‘Qadar jaane na...’ (Bhai Bhai) ,‘Meri aankhon se koi neend liye jaata hai,,,’ (Pooja Ke Phool) , ‘Naina barse rimjhim rimjhim...’and ‘Jo humne dastaan apni sunayi...‘ (Woh Kaun Thi?) , ‘Main to tum sang nain milaake haar gayi sajna...’ (Manmauji) ,‘Chhayi barkha bahaar...’ (Chirag) , ‘Woh bhooli dastaan...’ (Sanjog) , ‘Baiyyan na dharo o balmaa...’ and ‘Mai ri main kaase kahoon...’ (Dastak) and ‘Rasm-e-ulfat ko nibhaye...’(Dil Ki Rahen).

The ghazal influence in Madan Mohan’s compositions was abundant and hence Talat Mehmood was his natural choice among the males. Some of Talat Mehmood’s magnificent songs for Madan Mohan are ‘Jis dil mein basana chaaha tha...’( Ada) , ‘Mera qarar le jaa...‘ and ‘Main paagal mera manwa paagal...‘ (Aashiana) , ‘Do din ki mohabbat mein humne...‘(Chote Babu) ,‘Humse aaya na gaya...’ (Dekh Kabira Roya) , ‘Phir wohi shaam wohi gham...’ and ‘Main teri nazar ka suroor hoon...’(Jahan Ara).

Mohammed Rafi too played a very fruitful role in Madan Mohan’s career with the combination churing out several hits. Rafi’s hummable Madan Mohan songs included ‘Basti basti parbat parbat gaata jaaye banjara...’ (Railway Platform) , ‘Tujhe kya sunaaon main dilruba...’ (Aakhri Dao) , ‘Kisiki yaad mein duniya ko ...‘’(Jahan Ara) , ‘Rang aur noor ki baraat kise pesh karoon...’ and ‘Dil khush hai aaj unse mulaqat ho gayi...’ (Ghazal) , ‘Main nigahen tere chehre se hataaon kaise...’ (Aap Ki Parchhaiyan), ‘Teri aankhon ke siva...’ (Chirag) , ‘Aap ke pehloo mein aakar ro diye...’ (Mera Saaya) , ‘Ek haseen shaam ko dil mera...’(Dulhan Ek Raat Ki) , ‘Kabhi na kabhi kahin na kahin...’(Sharaabi) , ‘Meri awaaz suno...‘ and ‘Tumhari zulf ke saaye mein...’ (Naunihal).

Other impressive Madan Mohan songs include ‘Ye chaand sitare kya jaane...’ (Suraiya / Khubsoorat) ,‘Kho gaya jaane kahaan arzoo ka jahaan...’ (Hemant Kumar/ Mohar), ‘Bhooli hui yaadein mujhe itna na satao...’(Mukesh/Sanjog) , ‘Kaun aaya mere man ke dwaare...‘ (Manna Dey/Dekh Kabira Roya) , ‘Ae dil mujhe bataa de...’ (Geeta Dutt/ Bhai Bhai) , ‘Dil dil se milaakar dekho ...’ (Kishore Kumar/Memsaab) , ‘Ashqon se teri humne tasveer banayi hai...’ (Asha Bhosle/Dekh Kabira Roya) ,‘Koi shikwa bhi nahin koi shikayat bhi nahin...’ (Asha Bhosle/ Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhari) , ‘Jhumka gira re Bareily ke bazaar mein...’(Asha Bhosle/Mera Saaya) and ‘Ari o shokh kaliyon muskura dena woh jab aaye...’ (Mahendra Kapoor/ Jab Yaad Kisiki Aati Hai).

Some of the finest and lasting duets have emerged from Madan Mohan. The list includes ‘Teri chamakti aankhon ke aage...’ (Talat Mehmood - Lata Mangeshkar/Chhote Babu) , ‘Woh chand muskaaya sitare sharmaaye’ (Manna Dey - Lata Mangeshkar/Aakhri Dao) , ‘Zameen se hamen aasman par bithake...’(Mohd.Rafi - Asha Bhosle/ Adalat) , ‘Kehta hai dil tum ho mere liye...’(Talat Mehmood - Asha Bhosle/Memsaab),‘Bheegi chandni chaayi bekhudi...’ (Lata Mangeshkar - Manna Dey/Suhagan) , ‘Ae sanam aaj ye qasam khaaye...’ (Lata Mangeshkar - Talat Mehmood/Jahan Ara) , ‘Do ghadi woh jo paas aa baithe...’ (Mohd.Rafi - Lata Mangeshkar / Gateway of India) , ‘Baad muddat ki ye ghadi aayi...’ (Mohd.Rafi - Suman Kalyanpur / Jahan Ara) , ‘Aapne apna banaaya meherbani aapki...’ (Lata Mangeshkar - Mahendra Kapoor / Dulhan Ek Raat Ki) and ‘Husn jab jab ishq se takraa gaya...’ (Mohd.Rafi - Asha Bhosle/Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare).

The last few films for which Madan Mohan worked also bore his stamp of quality, such as Parwana with hit songs like ‘Jis din se maine tumko dekha hai...’ (Mohd.Rafi- Asha Bhosle) and Kishore-Rafi’s ‘Yun na sharmaa phaila de...’ and Ek Mutthi Aasmaan with that Kishore hit ‘Har koi chahta hai ek mutthi aasmaan...’ and the duet ‘Pyar kabhi kam na karna sanam...‘ by Kishore Kumar and Vani Jairam. Bawarchi boasted of the Manna Dey classic ‘Tum bin jeevan kaisa jeevan...’ while Mausam, which once again proved Madan Mohan’s musical creativity and how well he bonded even with Gulzar and the filmmaker’s pet singer Bhupinder in songs like ‘Dil dhoondta hai phir wohi...’ (Bhupinder -Lata Mangeshkar with a solo version also by Bhupinder),the Lata solo ‘Ruke ruke se qadam...’.

The Madan Mohan magic was again revealed when ace director Yash Chopra used Madan Mohan’s tunes for his very recent magnum opus Veer Zaara and the music proved to be a winner.

Any mention of Madan Mohan’s work would be incomplete without mentioning filmmaker Chetan Anand. The Chetan Anand - Madan Mohan - Kaifi Azmi trio brought us highly creative music in Haqeeqat,Heer-Ranjha and Hanste Zakhm. The music of Haqeeqat proved to be the highlight of this war film. Mohd.Rafi’s ‘Ab tumhare hawale watan saathiyon...’ remains a reference point for patriotism till today. Other gems in this film are Lata’s ‘Zara si aahat hoti hai...’ and ‘Khelo na mere dil se...’, not to forget the soul-stirring ‘Hoke majboor mujhe...’ by Mohd.Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey and Bhupinder.

Heer-Ranjha boasted of numbers like ‘Ye duniya ye mehfil...’ by Mohd.Rafi, ‘Milo na tum to hum ghabraye...’ and ‘Do dil toote do dil haare...’ by Lata Mangeshkar. And Hanste Zakhm had the haunting Rafi number ‘Tum jo mil gaye ho...’, Lata’s ‘Betaab dil ki tamanna...’ and ‘Aaj socha to aansoo bhar aaye...’.

Madan Mohan has left behind a treasury of songs for us to relish and enjoy. To echo his song sung by Talat Mehmood in Madhosh: `Meri yaad mein tum na aansoo bahana...’
