Shreya Ghoshal Wow! The name in itself is so musical, that when I hear about her, read about her, think about her or write about her (like I am now), I hear many musical waves entering my ears and mesmerizing my mind and soul. It would be a very big understatement to call her a singer. She maybe a singer for you, for your neighbour or the whole world for that matter. But as far as I’m concerned I refuse to accept her as a singer.

For me she is a magician! When she sings she has the ability to hypnotize you with her extremely melodious voice. In fact again, melodious is too small word to describe her voice. Her voice is divine. When I hear her songs I get a feeling that the goddess of music is residing in her and has taken another birth to bless the mortals with the soothing and calming effect of her songs.

Soothing and calming, well yes, those are the words to describe her songs in Jism. Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai will always be one of my all time favourites. The innocence of her young voice filled with magic (Jaadu) and ardor (Nasha) is what made that song so beautiful indeed. Another of her gem from the same movie was Chalo Tumko Lekar Chalen which really takes you to an altogether new world away from all your troubles and worries. Just dim the lights, close your eyes & play this song. What happens? Your mind gets in a relaxed state & you feel that indeed a fairy has come from a fairyland to take you with her, away from all your tribulations.

After hearing her songs in Jism I instantly became her die-hard fan. I have heard a lot about Tansen being able to bring rain or being able to light a Deepak through his songs. If any singer of today can get close to such magical works, it’s got to be our magician – Shreya Ghoshal. I’m sure if she really tries hard, she has that supernatural heavenly element in her voice to be able to do it. She just needs to believe in herself, that’s it.

Another of her major achievement at a tender age of twenty is to sing for Aishwarya Rai in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. Sanjay spotted her talent in Sa-Re-Ga-Ma program and phoned her personally offering her the chance to sing for his flick. She was pleasantly surprised and accepted the offer instantly. She was just 18 that time. When she was asked to sing in rehearsal, she just closed her eyes and sang with her heart without thinking much. And it turned out to be so good that there was a pin drop silence as she sung, and people were so awestruck that after two minutes they realized that the song was over. Undoubtedly she got the ovation of her life! And the song was recorded in one go only.

Shreya has very good memories of her Devdas experience. She says it was an honour for her to work in such a big project involving legends like Shahrukh, Madhuri & Aishwarya. She was very impressed with Shahrukh’s charm, Aishwarya’s friendly nature and Madhuri’s dance (especially in Dola Re). Thanks to Devdas and Bairi Piya her friends now tease her by saying “Ishhh” repeatedly but the light hearted cheerful girl she is, she obviously doesn’t seem to mind it one bit.

Coming to few more of her gems now. “Bepanah Pyar Hai” from Krishna Cottage is yet another fine example of the exquisiteness of her voice. She has brought life into that song. The lyrics, music and the whole song seem to be breathing. You can feel that song, you can experience the feeling of love and pain embedded in it all thanks to yet once again the voice of our one and only – Shreya Ghoshal.

“Chann Chann” from Munna Bhai MBBS is yet another feather in her already very well decorated cap. The song has a kind of freshness in it, which is very rarely seen these days. It’s a very slow, soft and sweet romantic number, which couldn’t have been sung better by anyone else. The reason being that no other singer has that innocence in her voice which our “magician” has. She has sung it in such a mellow way, that you can feel the waterfall flowing behind your back, you can experience the greenery of the valleys & you get totally absorbed in the song, forgetting for a moment even about your own identity!

Coming to her personal life. She was born in Kota (Rajasthan) and did her schooling from there only. Her mother was a classical singer but never got an opportunity to prove her talent to the world. Her father is an engineer. One of the main reasons for Shreya’s success is that her parents were very supportive indeed. Her father got himself transferred from Kota to Mumbai, so that she can get better prospects for her future.

She has done her graduation with English Literature and now is planning for MA in the same subject. She really loves literature and will be doing her masters through correspondence since she is too busy with her future projects. She is even planning to bring out her own music album soon. She would appear in the video too, but won’t dance. She also feels that after the Devdas number, she has been taken too seriously and is only being offered, slow & sensuous songs. She believes she can sing item numbers too, if given a chance.

Talent wise she is so rich, that if she keeps going like this, she will very soon be the new legend of Music Industry beating the greats like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. And I’m sure that day isn’t too far! If someone asks me which is the most intoxicating wine in this world, my reply would be – Shreya Ghoshal’s voice. Her voice contains more Nasha than all the liquor of this world taken together. One just gets drowned in her voice and doesn’t feel like getting out of that ocean of ecstatic nectar.

The reason she is so good is because she sings from her heart and not from her throat. She sings because she wants to sing. She sings because she loves to sing. She doesn’t sing for money but just for sheer joy of it. She hasn’t commercialized her voice like the other singers and that puts her in a different class altogether. And that’s my biggest fear. I hope she never commercializes it. The day she does, it’s going to be all over! But I don’t know why, I have this feeling, it’s not going to happen. Shreya will continue to sing for the absolute pleasure it provides her and the innocence of her voice won’t be killed.

I also owe some of my success to her. Last year, there was a question in my General English paper to write an article about your role model. And as I saw that question, the first name that came to my mind was Shreya Ghoshal. I wrote a nice little article on her, and praised her for achieving so much in such a young age. The result - I got 88 marks out of 100.

One of my friends said, “I’m sure you’d love to be friends with Shreya. Isn’t it?” I replied, “Absolutely Not! Goddesses are meant to be worshiped and not befriended!”
