This is what I found on net about this ghazal:
As a poet, Faiz began writing on the conventional themes of love and beauty, but soon these conventional themes get submerged in the larger social and political issues of the day. The traditional griefs of love get fused with the travails of the afflicted humanity, and Faiz uses his poetry to champion the cause of socialistic humanism. Consequently, the familiar imagery of a love-poet acquires new meanings in the hands of Faiz... This turning away from romance to realism, from Eros to Agape, is beautifully suggested in his poem (a nazm), "mujh se pehli si mohabbat meri mahboob na maang." OK here is the true story in my words: During those times Muslims of the world were facing hardship by the Britishers, in India/Pakistan and most of the gulf countries, hence poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz writes to his love in this poem saying, "Dont expect the same love I had for you like in the past. I have so much to do for the community and for the nation. I thought being with you was the best thing one could ever imagine, but my duties for the nation and religion stands more priority". If you listen to the lyrics you will understand the rest ROM Bhai. I love the PUNCH line of the ghazal, "Ab bhi dilkash hai tera husn magar kya kijiye. Aur bhi dukh hai zamaane mein mohabbat mein siva, raahaten aur bhi hai vasll ki raahat ke siva". The poet here says, There is no doubt you are still beautiful, but that doesnt suffice for the greater cause, I have to take up the struggle for freedom and stand for the religion. _______________________________________________________________________________

 Yes, similar thoughts in the lines you mentioned. Reminds me of one Mukesh-Sudha M duet... Tum Agar Bhool Bhi Jaao Toh Yeh Haq Hei Tumko, Meri Baat Aur Hei Maine Toh Mohabbat Ki Hei... The relevant lines are: Zindagi Sirf Mohabbat Nahin Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai Zulf Rukhsar Ki Jannat Nahin Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai Bhook Aur Pyaas Ki Maari Is Duniya Mein Ishq Hi Ek Haqeeqat Nahi Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai Tum Agar Aankh Churaao To Yeh Haq Hai Tumko Maine Tumse Hi Nahin Sabse Mohabbat Ki Hai THE INTELLIGENT MUST MAKE CONCESSIONS! |

My uncle told me this story, and strange that poets in the past were so much involved and concerned for the nation/religion. Nowdays you can find them writing "Choli ke peeche kya hai", and "Kabhi mere saath koi raath guzaar, tujhse subha tak mein karoon pyar". lol
