Jagjit Singh - The Ghazal King

Jagjit Singh. He was a true legend in his own time. In a span of nearly 35 years, by several estimations, he released 80 plus discs. But during the same time, along with his singing wife Chitra (see the attached pictures below), he released nearly 400 albums. These included, apart from the individual albums, various collections of songs from his released albums. This number is truly an astonishing achievement.

Jagjit Singh, though popularly known for his ghazals, also had numerous devotional albums to his credit. He also was active in many films. He was occasionally participated in composing music for TV shows. He sang in many languages, but mostly in Hindi and his mother tongue, Punjabi.

He was decorated with innumerable awards. Prominent of these include Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Academy Award, Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Sahitya Kala Academy Award, and host of others.

I was encouraged by several members of this Forum to start a thread on Jagjitji. Finally I decided to take the plunge.

Jagjitji, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 70, left us with a legacy of overwhelming song contributions. Singhji was affectionately known as the Ghazal King. Because he lives through his work in our hearts forever, Singhji is still the King.

I will start this thread with Singhji’s discography. I split this into various parts, sorted alphabetically. Each part of the discography lists 20 albums. I will upload these parts below.

I will follow up this with a devotional album of Jagjitji.

Next, the discography…

Shri Ganesh

It is an amazing fact, at least for me, that Jagjitji had nearly 50 devotional albums. We will kick off this thread with this beautiful album of prayers to Lord Ganesha where there are eight separate bhajans. I will upload them in two back-to-back posts.

Here are the bhajans in the first post...

The Unforgettables (1976)

This was the first recorded album of Chitra & Jagjit Singh. The singing format that the couple adopted for their first album was unconventional. In an interview Jagjitji explained that "I was determined to polish up the genre and make it more acceptable to modern tastes, so chose simple poems and set them to simple tunes. I also introduced western instrumentation to make them livelier." This formula proved a winner and the couple never looked back after this thundering success with their first album. The album became an overnight best seller and heralded a new couple to the horizon of ghazal singing group. Of the 11 ghazals from the album, Jagjitji’s “Baat Niklegi” became a sensational hit. Critics described it as ground breaking, transformative, and a milestone in the history of ghazal music.

Of the 11 tracks in the album there are four solos by Jagjitji and five by Chitraji. Two are duets. I am uploading these ghazals in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set…

Bahuroopi (1969) - A Gujarati Film

We have already seen two facets of Jagjitji; devotional albums and ghazal albums. The third facet he made himself name was in films and television. He either sang one or two songs for them, or composed music for them, or both. Here are some of the details of his first movie...

Jagjit Singh’s first break as a singer came in this Gujarati movie. In this 1969 film, he sang a beautiful song “Laagee Raam” composed by Ajit Merchant. At this time Jagjit was still a bachelor and had typical Sardarji’s looks. After this he changed his image by removing both his pagdi and beard. He later married Chitraji who was from Bengal. She was a divorcee and already had a daughter by her first marriage.

Jagjitji remembered his Gujarati connection throughout his life. He visited Ahmedabad at least twice a year and performed there numerous times.

Even though this film was the first one for which he sang, it was not the first time he sang a Gujarati song. He sang a Gujarati song that was composed by Avinash Vyas for a gathering in 1968 at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Bhavan used to encourage young singers to perform at its gatherings. The occasion where Jagjitji got the opportunity to sing was for Bhavan’s “Song of the Month” gathering. For his efforts Singhji received a sum of 250 Rupees.

“Laagee” is the only song Jagjitji sang for the film “Bahuroopi”. I don’t have other songs from the film to share with you. If any one of you can share, please kindly do so. Thanks.

Now for the only song from this film I have…

Jagjitji's early albums generally tended to have English titles. That was true with his and Chitraji's first album "The Unforgettables". So is this one and many others that followed it.

This 1980 album has 10 beautiful ghazals in it. I will upload them in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set...

Aavishkar (1973)

This is one of the fine movies about feuding couples where the two principal actors, Sharmila and Rajesh Khanna, gave superb performances. There are only few songs in this movie but each one of them is a gem. The song "Naina Hain" by Asha is a real beauty. She sang with such deep pathos and passion that it lingers in your thoughts for some time.

Jagjitji and Chitraji sang only one song in this film. It is also a sheer beauty. It appears twice in the film. I am uploading the second part in the second post. The quality of this part is just fair. I am also uploading a slightly different take on the same song rendered in classical style by Jagjitji in a concert in Mumbai. It is heart hugging and if you are only used to Jagjitji's ghazals this singing will simply blow you out. Done in Bharavi Raag, it is one superbly executed lovely. Incidentally, this song was apparently written by Wajad Ali Shah, the Last Nawab of Avadh. I cannot authenticate this but the CD simply lists lyrics as traditional.

I am uploading songs from this album in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains all songs from an original soundtrack album. The second post contains songs taken from a DVD.

Now for the songs in the first post...

The songs in this post are all from a DVD of the film. The second part of the "Baabul" song comes near the end of the film and its audio quality in the DVD wasn't that good. I am uploading here at a lower bit rate for completeness sake.

Bhakti (Live in Trinidad-1)

In a trip to Trinidad in 1989, Chitraji & Jagjitji gave several concerts. These were released as a two set CD albums and LPs. One interesting aspect of these albums is that the first CD is a Hindu devotional where as the second CD is an Islamic devotional. Later, both these albums were released separately under different names. The Hindu devotional album was released as "Bhakti". The Islamic devotional was released under the name "Chirag".

I will upload songs from the first volume today in two back-to-back posts. The second volume will be uploaded next week. Here is the first set of songs from the first volume...

Birha Da Sultan - A Punjabi Album

Shiv Kumar Batalvi who died at the tender age of 36 in 1973 was a noted Punjabi romantic poet. His songs touched many people’s hearts as they delved into pangs of pathos, heightened passions, agony of separation, and ecstasy of fulfillment. In 1967 he was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his popular verse play that became an instant epic. Thus at 21, he became the youngest recipient of the coveted award. The play was based on an ancient legend of Puran Bhagat. That work “Loona”, published in 1965 when he was 19, is now considered a modern masterpiece of Punjabi literature.

It is only appropriate that Jagjitji chose Batalvi’s work for his first Punjabi album. The songs that created a new genre in Punjabi literature have been given to life, appropriately, in the vibrant and unique modernistic approach of Jagjitji and Chitraji. I am uploading these 10 beautiful songs written by Batalvi in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of these songs…

Ek Baar Kaho (1980)

Jagjitji sang only one song in this film. But it is a thing of lasting sheer beauty. This song he sang along with Aarti Mukerjee appears piecemeal throughout the movie, some six or seven times. Several albums published it as a duet with and without dialogues. The one that includes dialogues is about 20 minutes long. I am uploading the duet version without dialogues in the first post. Many other albums released most of this song by separating male and female portions as two songs. I am uploading these in the second post.

These songs came either from CD collections or from a DVD. Whereas the quality of the songs from CD is very good, I feel that the quality from the DVD could have been a tad better.

Now, for the songs in the first post...

This 1979 concert was originally released as two LPs. Each LP had six ghazals in it. Later it was released in cassettes and CDs. After a while it was released as one CD with eight ghazals selected from the 12.

I will upload ghazals from the first volume in two back-to-back posts here today. The second volume will come next week. This album is one of the liveliest of Chitraji & Jagjitji. Especially when Jagjitji sings "Sarakti Jaaye" the whole pandemonium breaks loose.

Bhai Saab,

You're very welcome.

You are one of the members of this Forum, Bhai Saab, who have encouraged me time and again to start this kind of thread. Before I could plunge into it, I wanted to make sure that I had enough albums to share and make a full justification of it. It turns out that I got plenty of them that I will be able to share that will keep this thread alive hopefully for sometime to come.

Again, thank you very much for the encouragement.

He Ram... He Ram.... Shree Ram Dhun

This devotional album consists of Shree Ram Dhun. On the CD it comes in two parts. It is difficult to distinguish what is the difference in these. It seems to me that they are the same except near the end for a minute are so.

This is a dhun devotional. The same words (given in the table below) are repeated over and over again. I believe each part has the dhun done eight times. Length of each part is about the same, nearly 27 minutes. I am uploading these dhuns in two back-to-back posts. Please note that because of the duration of each dhun, I have to split each of them into three parts. To access the dhun please upload all three parts as any one or two will not work.

Arth (1982)

Mahesh Bhatt made several good movies before he decided to quit directing films. This movie, "Arth", came during his early career and it is one of the great ones. Bhatt wrote the story, co-wrote the screenplay, produced the film and directed it as well. Apparently it was based partly on his own life when he was involved with the late actress Parveen Babi. Smita Patil played Babi’s role in the film. But the movie belonged to Shabana Azmi all the way. She portrayed the wife of the director husband played by Kharbanda. One day she finds herself facing the truth that her husband loves someone else and she has no one else to look after her wellbeing except dig deep into herself to establish her own identity. Shabana was simply brilliant as the suffering wife who was willing to face her new life on her own terms.

The movie won several awards and rightfully so. Shabana won the Filmfare Award as the Best Actress. She also won the National Award as the Best Actress for her brilliant portrayal. Rohini Hattangadi, a BAFTA Award winner for her role in Sir Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi (1982)”, won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. Mahesh Bhatt won the Filmfare Award for the Best Screenplay.

The songs of this movie, composed by Chitra Singh and the late Jagjit Singh, are simply superb. The original soundtrack album has five songs but in the actual film, they used only three songs, all written by Kaifi Azmi Saab and all sung by Jagjitji. I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains songs from the original soundtrack album plus the title music from a DVD. The second post contains some specials.

Live in Concert - Dar es Salaam - Vol. 1

1969 was a concert year for Jagjitji. He and Chitraji were in a live concert somewhere in India (Mumbai?) that resulted in the two albums I have uploaded earlier (“Come Alive in a Live Concert”). He also made a trip with Chitraji to Pakistan. That concert realized five albums. I have these albums and will upload them one at a time in a few weeks. Then, he toured (without Chitraji) to the city of Dar es Salaam in Nigeria. He made this trip with the Rainbow group out of Mumbai. The troupe also included the singers Taj Ahmed and Shankar Ganguly. The result of the trip was another two albums. These were released both as LPs and cassettes. I am not certain whether they were ever released in CDs. These two albums are almost rare and very difficult to find. I was fortunate to get hold of the cassettes. I am uploading ghazals from these two cassettes in two consecutive weeks, one this week and the other next week. Please be warned that the quality of these recordings is not to the mark even though the songs come out loud and clear.

I am uploading ghazals from the first volume in two back-to-back posts. The music for these ghazals is by their respective singers. Here are the ghazals in the first post…

Prem Geet

According to the screen credits this is the film that introduced Jagjitji as a music director into the films. It also introduced Anita Raj who has the lead role.

This is an outstanding effort by Jagjitji. Some of the songs from this film became very popular, especially the numbers by Suresh Wadkar and Jagjitji. But Jagjitji's solo, "Hothon Se Chhoo Lo Tum" became so popular that it overshadowed all other songs from the album. In my opinion, Wadkar's song "Khwaabon Ko" stands equally with that of Jagjitji's. "Hothon Se" became one of the perennial favorites with concert goers in attendance at Jagjitji's live performances.

Aum (Om) Jaap

Here is one of the write-ups about this album says…

Aum is a combination of three syllables (A, U, and M) that represents the three Supreme Gods. Here A stands for Brahma, the Creator; U stands for Vishnu, the Persevere; and M stands for Mahesha, the Destroyer. Thus this single word pronounced Om signifying the three divine entities that spans the entire life spectrum of everything this earth holds.

In this album Jagjitji in his inimitable voice performs the Jaap in three different ways. Each chant is repeated 51 times. I will upload these dhuns in two back-to-back posts.

Here is the first one. Please note that because of the length of this jaap, I have to split it into two parts. To download this jaap, please download both parts. Any one part by itself will not work.

Jagjitji released series of three albums with the theme of "Moksha" and "Sacred Dhuns for Pure Bliss". These were this album, "Om - Moksha - Sacred Dhuns for Pure Bliss", plus "Shri Krishna - Moksha - Sacred Dhuns for Pure Bliss", and the third one "Shri Shiva - Moksha - Sacred Dhuns for Pure Bliss". All these albums have the same "Opening Invocation & Introduction" and "Moksha Vachan". The differences were the chanting of dhuns.

Here are the devotionals from this first album on "Om Moksha". Please note that because of the length of one of the dhuns, I have to split it into two parts. To access this dhun it is imperative that you download both parts because any one of the parts will not work.

Here are the devotionals...

Live in Pakistan Vol. 1

This concert held in Pakistan by Chitraji & Jagjitji yielded five albums. These came out as LPs, cassettes, and CDs. Even though quality of these albums is mostly good, some ghazals were not properly recorded. That especially is the case with this first album. The first two ghazals in this first volume are of poor audio quality. Especially the second ghazal, "Sarakti Jaaye". This is quite unfortunate because it is the second longest recorded version of this song. It was later exceeded by 80 seconds in the recording done at the Melbourne concert.

The ghazal "Raunaq-E-Maikada" is kind of an oddity. Chitraji's sound quality comes out clear whereas Jagjitji's voice for some reason is of very low audibility and is not as clear and crisp. Those who were in-charge of recording these ghazals of the concert probably realized this and seemed to have corrected the problems. The next two ghazals of this volume definitely are better sounding than the first two.

I will upload these five albums, starting today, one per week. The ghazals in this volume are posted in two back-to-back posts. Please note that because of the lengths of these two ghazals, I have to split them into two parts each. To access the ghazals it is imperative that you download both parts. Any one part will not work.

Here are the ghazals in the first post...

Kalka (1983)

This movie was produced by the actor Shatrughan Sinha. Unfortunately except for the three songs I am sharing below I don't have others, if there are any more, from this film. Also, I don't have details of the singers or lyricists. I will be thankful if someone can help with this.

A Happy Independence Day to all of you!

As an appreciation of this day, I am uploading 35 different renditions of "Jana Gana Mana" and "Aalaaps" in five back-to-back posts. A.R. Rahman composed music for these songs. Strictly speaking this is not one of Jagjitji's albums. However, technically it qualifies as one because his rendition of "Jana Gana Mana" is included in this.

Situm (1982)

This film was produced by the actor Vikram who also wrote its story. The movie has its moments but could have been much better if it was handled with more care and thought. The presence of the great artistes like Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah, lyrics written by ever so dependable Gulzarji, and the music provided by the incomparable team of Chitra & Jagjit Singh, one expected more. All these folks did a splendid job to lift the movie but in the end it leaves wanting for more and not satisfied...

Songs from this film are absolutely great. Asha's two versions of the song "Saara Din" are simply superb. But the song of the album is the one by Ravindra Sathe, "Kaun Gali Se". Beautiful lyrics. Great composition. Thoughtful singing. I wish Sathe, a great Marathi singer, should have gotten more opportunities to sing in the Hindi films.

Here are the songs from this beautiful album...

Nirvana (1983)

Late actor Jalal Agha wrote the story, produced and directed this film. Part of the story apparently was semi-biographical. The movie was a cause of controversy. There was a scene in which the heroine of the film, Sarika, appears nude. Censors objected to it and it was not included in the finished product. There are also conflicting reports about whether the movie was ever released. But one fact is that its music composed by the duo Chitra Singh & Jagjit Singh is simply superb. I am able to upload only some of the songs from this album. The full list is given in the table below. Missing songs are shown in red italics in the table. Tum Laut Aao (1983)

Here is another absolute beauty from the music director and singer Jagjitji. Chitraji joins him by contributing several beauties of her own. Punjabi Hits of Jagjit Singh-1

Over a dozen titles comprising Punjabi hits, each with multiple albums, came out with Chitraji & Jagjitji as the principal singers. Invariably most of these albums have repeated several songs even though some new ones were included.

This title has two volumes. Each one comprises eight songs. I am uploading the first volume in two back-to-back posts today. The second volume will come next week.

Zulf Ke Saye Saye (1983)

I have only four songs from this film that I am uploading here. I don't have too many details of this movie except that its music was composed by Mohinderjit Singh. Well, who is Mohinderjit Singh?

Mohinderjit Singh (photo given below) is a singer, composer and violinist. He was trained by Husnlal Bhagatram as an instrumentalist and Hindustani vocalist. He composed music mostly for TV serials. His work was published as albums by many popular labels like BMG, CBS, T Series, etc. One of his songs, called “Sadbhavana”, with the theme of love and compassion for the country, was given the status of a National Song.

He invented a new musical instrument called “Naad Yogini” that on the surface looks like a violin. A description given on the instrument noted that it has “all the pathos of a violin, the resonance of a cello, and the smoothing seductiveness of a sarangi and a flute.”

I have listed in the table below the missing songs in red italics. If these are from this film, and if you can share, please kindly do so. Thanks.

I am uploading in this post several variations of the famous song "Kashti". One of these is a duet version of Chitraji & Jagjitji. The other is an extended version of Jagjitji from a live concert. I am also uploading here a version of this same song by Anuradha Paudwal and Jaswant Singh. Finally I am including a piano instrumental of Brian Silas of the same song.

Jagjit & Chitra Singh Live in Concert at Wembley

I am uploading ghazals from this album in first two posts. The thumri (in the second post) "Baabul Mora" has a fascinating history. Here is some of this information...

The thumri composed in Bhairavi Raag was widely credited to Nawab Wajid Ali Shah (see his picture below) as its poet. Satyajit Ray made an acclaimed Hindi movie, his only one in Hindi, “Shatranj ke Khiladi (1977)” on the Nawab’s last days under British rule. Great Amjad Khan played the role of the Nawab in that film.

The thumri “Baabul Mora” was made popular by the immortal K.L. Saigal. He sang the song for the film “Street Singer” in 1938. It is reported that the song was recorded live at Saigal Saab's request, as he performed it on the streets. Whether this is the case or not, it is a fact that this thumri has spurred enormous interest in classical vocalists. Who is who of this genre of singers have recorded this song one time or another. I am posting several of these in posts 4 and 5. One of the famous renditions I am missing is by the great Begum Akhtar. I couldn’t get hold of this piece of her work. I am requesting members to share with rest of us if they can. Thanks.

Here are the ghazals from the first post...

Thumris Pertaining to "Jagjit & Chitra Singh Live in Concert at Wembley"...

This post includes the famous song by Saigal Saab that spurred an enormous interest in the thumri "Baabul Mora". The thumri sang by Chitraji & Jagjitji was also in the film "Aavishkar". I am also uploading it here. Also, an extended live version of Jagjitji is also included in this post. Finally, Alisha Chinoy, who is known for her sizzling pop numbers, collaborates here with the great violinist, L. Subramaniam, and sings astonishingly and very beautifully this thumri.

Here are all of these...

Ashiana

Jagjitji collaborated with the famous producer and director Mahesh Bhatt in four movies. These were "Arth (1982)", "Aaj (1985)", "Ashiana (1986)", and "Dushman (1998)". Bhatt directed the first three films and wrote the screenplay for the fourth one.

Ths film "Ashiana" for which Chitraji & Jagjitji composed music has only three songs. Of the three songs, the one sung by Jagjitji became very popular and still remains with his fans as one of their favorites. Incidentally, Jagjitji appeared in this film. This song was picturized on him.

Here is this and other two songs from this film...

Thanks.

Goonj (1989)

I have serious misgivings about Jagjitji being the co-music director along with Biddu for this film. Their expertise seems to be poles apart and that is where I have problems. Except for the soul stirring magnificent Manna’s song and the title music, the album is mostly western in nature. It is hard to imagine Jagjitji giving music to any of these numbers. However, I could be very wrong about this. I did check various references on this. Most of them credit both Jagjitji and Biddu as the music directors for the film. I couldn’t get hold of the actual movie to verify this. May be someone can help clarify the situation.

Irrespective of these lingering doubts, here are the songs from this album…

Incidentally, Asharani Mathur edited a book on Jagjitji of almost same name as that of this album. The book's complete name is "Beyond Time. The Ageless Music of Jagjit Singh". Lataji wrote a forword to this book. A couple of lines from this foreword are worth quoting here. Lataji wrote that "...The world of music would not be complete without ghazals. The world of ghazals would not be complete without Jagjit Singh..."

Here is the first set of ghazals...

Doosra Kanoon (1989)

Jagjitji sang few songs in this TV show. Unfortunately I don't have any of these songs to share with you. I am requesting members to share any songs they may have from this TV show. Thanks.

Hare Krishna... Hare Krishna...

Jagjitji released couple of albums in late 1990's with titles "Hare Krishna... Hare Krishna..." and "Hare Krishna... Hare Rama...". Even though titles sound almost the same, they are quite different albums. I am uploading today the devotional dhun from the first album. The second album will come at a later time.

This album has only one dhun, a lengthy one of nearly 38 minutes in duration. I split it into two parts and will upload them in two back-to-back posts. However, each of the post contains nearly 19 minutes long dhun. Therefore I have to split them into two parts each. To access the dhun from each post, it is imperative that you upload both of its parts in each post. Downloading only one part will not work.

Here is first part of the dhun split into two parts...

Black Magic (Also Known As "Passions")

Before their son's tragic death one of the characteristics of albums of Chitraji & Jagjitji was to have English names for their titles. This trend continued starting from their debut album "The Unforgettables" in 1976. "Black Magic" was originally released in LP. Later it was released in CD as "Passions".

"Black Magic" ("Passions") has eight beautiful ghazals in it. I will upload them in two back-to-back posts. Incidentally the ghazal "Jawaani Ke Heele" in the first post reminds one of Rafi Saab's classic beauty "Kahin Ek Maasoom Naazuk Si Ladki" from the film "Shankar Husain (1977)".

Here are the songs in the first post...

Kaanoon Ki Awaaz (1989)

The only saving grace for this atrocious film is the music of Jagjitji. The movie has only few songs and only a couple of them are good. The songs that stand out are the solo by Lataji, "Mera Jug Jug Jiye", and the duet "Saajan Mere". I am not certain about the female singer of "Saajan" and the solo "Peeda". Also, the song "Peeda" appears to be of shorter duration in the DVD. There may be a longer version of this. If so, please share with us. Thank you.

Here are the songs from this album...

Jagjit Singh has nothing to do with the music of Goonj. There are two Music directors in this pic.. Biddu & Binjoo Ali.

Kahkashan - The Television Series (1989-1991)

Ali Sardar Jafri, (see his attached picture), who produced this television series, was a critic, documentary filmmaker, freedom fighter, pacifist, poet, radical activist, rebel, and story writer all at the same time. He wrote mostly about compassion, love, perseverance, and sensitivity. Like the critic Irfan Ahmed wrote, “…his poetry began in radical delight and ended in civilizational wisdom” a modification of English poet Robert Frost’s opinion that stated “Poetry begins in delight and ends in wisdom.”

“Kahkashan” was a television series that was produced in the years 1989 to 1991. The series depicted lives and times of seven modern Urdu poets who changed Urdu poetry for good. These were:

1. Faiz Ahmed Faiz
2. Firaq Gorakhpuri
3. Hasrat Mohani
4. Jigar Moradabadi
5. Josh Malihabadi
6. Majaz Lucknowi
7. Makhdoom Mohiuddin

I was able to get hold of all songs and videos of items 2 to 7 but nothing on item 1. If anyone of the members can share ghazals from Faiz’s show, please do. Thank you.

Jagjitji was the music director of the “Kahkashan” series. This is considered to be one of his best works in par with “Mirza Ghalib”.

We will start on the ghazals of these famous poets from this TV series starting in the next post.

Firaq Gorakhpuri, born as Raghpati Sahay, was a poet, critic and commentator. His poetry comprised of ghazals, nazms, and rubaayees. He was a prolific writer. By one estimate he wrote over 40,000 poems. His poems were published as three comprehensive anthologies. He garnered many awards during his distinguished career.

"Kahkashan - Jigar Moradabadi" Episode

A recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958 and an honorary degree of D. Litt from Aligarh University, Jigar Moradabadi had rough early childhood. In his early teens he moved to the town of Gonda near Lucknow where he befriended Asghar Gondvi. Gondvi was a famous poet in his own right. Gondvi played many roles in Jigar’s life. He was his mentor, a father figure (Asghar was only six years older than Jigar), an older brother, a teacher, a friend, and a fellow poet. He also became his relative when Jigar married a sister of Gondvi’s wife.

Jigar was immensely admired by his contemporary poet the famous Faiz Ahmad Faiz. They often used to attend mushairas together in Aligarh which Jigar always dominanted overshadowing Faiz . Now Jigar is mentioned among current day learned literary circles in the same breath as Iqbal and Ghalib.

Jigar was also a mentor of Majrooh Sultanpuri, one of the great Hindi film lyricists.

I am uploading ghazals and verses from this episode in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains ghazals whereas the second verses.

"Kahkashan - Josh Malihabadi" Episode

Josh Malihabadi, born as Shabbir Hasan Khan, was a notable Urdu poet who wrote poems in favor of India’s independence and published many books of verses and some prose as well.

He worked in the State of Hyderabad for the ruler of that state Nizam. But he was expelled from the state when he wrote poems against him.

He became a close friend of Jawaharlal Nehru and was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1954. He finally yielded to family pressures and migrated to Pakistan in 1958. He befriended Faiz Ahmed Faiz in Pakistan.

In his autobiography, “Yaadon Ki Baraat”, he wrote extensively about the Sunni-Shia tensions in his family. Some the members of his family were intermarried in both faiths.

Mehfil (1990)

The year 1990 was an eventful year in the lives of Chitraji & Jagjitji. Their only son, 18-year old Vivek, was killed in a motorbike accident. The incident left them devastated. Chitraji lost her voice in the deep personal grief she suffered and never sang again. The incident also left Jagjitji very much affected. "Kahkashan - Majaz Lucknowi" Episode

Majaz Lucknowi was a romantic and revolutionary poet. He came from a literary lineage. He started writing poems while at Aligarh University. He wrote mostly on philosophy, romance, and revolution. He was one of the active participants of the Progressive Writers’ Movement.

Majaz fell in love with a married woman who was an ardent fan of his poems. She heard him first when she was at Aligarh. Soon after this she moved to Delhi. Majaz met her in Delhi and couldn’t bear to be separate from her even though she was already married. He eventually became an alcoholic and mentally deranged. He was in a mental hospital for a while. He died alone in a tavern in Lucknow at the young age of 44.

Some of his major works include “Aahang”, “Saaz-E-Nau”, and “Shab-E-Taab”. He was honored by his alma mater when they decided to select one of his poems, “Yeh Mera Chaman”, as its anthem.

Someone Somewhere (1990)

During the recording of this album Chitraji’s & Jagjitji’s son Vivek was tragically died in an accident. Here are their words when the album finally was released…

“…We dedicate this album to the ever loving memories of our only son Vivek, who left us forever, at the age of 18, on the 28th of July 1990.

When Vivek was born, he filled our lives with joy and music. Baboo, as we fondly called him, gave us all the success that we have had ever since he came into our lives.

Baboo, right from his infancy, had a tremendous talent for music. His passion was for rhythm and currently he used to play the drums beautifully.

Baboo has always influenced our music with his astute and invaluable suggestions and constructive criticism. We were half way through recording these songs for a double album, when Baboo left us so suddenly. These are a few of the songs we had managed to complete earlier. We don't know if these would have met with his approval…”

There are nine beautiful ghazals in this album. I will upload them in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set, the cover picture of the album shown below adorns Vivek’s photograph…

Khal Nayak (1993)

It is strictly coincidental that I am posting the songs from this movie “Khal Nayak” whose star Sanjay Dutt is currently having personal problems of his own. The Indian Supreme Court has just sentenced him to five years in prison in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. The sentiment from most of his colleagues and some notable leaders of the nation is to grant him pardon. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds in the coming weeks.

This movie has not much of a story to it. But it has some of the best music given by LP. Also it was helped by Madhuri’s beauty and the brilliant photography. All songs from the film were huge hits. But the notoriety of the song “Choli Ke Peeche” catapulted the movie to a runaway box-office hit. I am uploading these songs in three back-to-back posts.

Mammo (1994)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier posting of this album...

Some movie makers have this incredible knack of taking a serious subject and presenting it in simplistic heartwarming manner. I have seen most of Satyajit Ray’s movies. He had this insight in storytelling. Another one, in my opinion, is Shyam Benegal. Ever since he made his sensational directorial debut with “Ankur” in 1974, he never looked back. He has made series of movies dealing with varied human and humane subjects. Along the way he earned various accolades and earned admiration of discerning cinegoers.

This is another movie to Benegal’s credit that has all the ingredients mentioned. It starred Farida Jalal in the title role and the story revolves around her, her sister, and a little boy finely played by Amit Phalke. Ms Jalal has been in movies for a long time. But this movie was once in a lifetime opportunity for her. She made use of it magnificently. She gave a splendid performance that was unexpected but at once heart warmingly appealing.

The movie won several awards. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Surekha Sikri, who played Jalal’s sister, won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. Farida Jalal won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.

Benegal made a series of socials with Muslims as prominent central characters. “Mammo” was the first one. He followed this with “Sardari Begum” in 1996. In 2001, he made a movie named “Zubeidaa”. Most recently, in 2010, he came up with another winner in “Well Done Abba”. Incidentally, most of these movies were done in such a way that one can identify familiarities of their own lives irrespective of their faith or religion.

There are only two songs in the movie. I ripped these from a DVD. Jagjit Singh’s beautiful song “Hazaar Baar Ruke Hum” is repeated four times in the film. It is played during the titles and part of it in the end. In between portions of the song are played a couple more times. The second song is “Aa Choom Loon”. I am not certain who the singers are. If someone can help identify the singers, I will be thankful. I am also including in this post few short music clips from the film.

Here are these songs and music clips…

Bhajan Samrat - Part 1

Anup Jalota may be called "Bhajan Samrat" but Jagjitji to his credit had numerous devotional albums released. In the last few months we have seen an ample evidence of this. This album consists of a collection of 20 bhajans & dhuns. I will upload them in four parts starting with the first part today.

I have organized each of these four parts with first post consisting of four bhajans and the second post containing a lengthy dhun. Here are the bhajans in this first post of the first part...

Adaa (1992)

Buoyed by the unprecedented success of their previous album, Lataji and Jagjitji got together to come up with another winner in this album. It does not reach the same heights as their “Sajda (1991)”, but it still is very good. There are 10 songs in this album. I will upload them in two back-to-back posts. Here are the first five songs…

Neem Ka Ped (1991)

This TV drama was aired in 1991. Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza developed it based on a short story by Vilayet Jafri. Gurbir Singh Grewal was its director. The title song I am including here was sung by Jagjitji.

Unfortunately Raza Saab passed away after developing 26 episodes. Vilayet Jafri developed an additional 32 episodes for a total of 58 episodes to complete the series. The show’s main character of a bonded labourer was played by Pankaj Kapoor.

I have not seen the series and not certain of any further details. Apparently it was a highly popular show. Here is the only song I have from this serial…

Bhopal Express (1999)

Most of the following write up appeared earlier when I uploaded songs from this album...

In the night of December 2, 1984, a leak of methyl isocyanate gas in the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant located in the city of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh resulted in one of the great disasters of tragic consequence in modern times. Nearly 4,000 people died in the wake of the immediate tragedy and another estimated 8,000 people died since then. It caused permanent disabilities to another 4,000 people. 40,000 more people suffered partial or temporary injuries. An affidavit released by the government estimated that close to 600,000 people have suffered health problems of varying degrees of severity. Even though the American parent company settled the issue with the Government of India, it is evident that too little was done from either side for those affected.

The photo attached below shows the memorial erected in the honor of those who lost their lives in the gruesome tragedy.

Taking this backdrop the movie “Bhopal Express” explored how the tragedy affected a young couple that changed lives of many people. Directed by Mahesh Mathai (see his picture below) the film won many internal and international awards.

Now for the songs from this film…
