one of very few songs Anand Bakshi sang and aslo wrote the lyrics for...

Hindi Song Title: Ke chand sa koi chehra
Hindi Movie/Album Name: SHOLAY
Singer(s): KISHORE KUMAR, MANNA DEY, BHUPINDER, ANAND BAKSHI, OTHERS

Hindi Lyrics:

Shuru hota hai phir baato ka mausam
Suhaani chaandni raato ka mausam
Bujhaaye kis tarha dil ki lagi ko
Lagaaye aag ham is chaandni ko
Ke chaand sa koyi chehra na pehlu mein ho

Arz kiya hai ...
Haay, ke chaand sa koyi chehra na pehlu mein ho
To chaandni ka maza nahi aata
Arre, jaam pee kar sharaabi na gir jaaye to -2
Maikashi ka maza nahi aata
Ke chaand sa koyi chehra ...

Zindagi hai mukammal adhuri nahi
Chaand sa koyi chehra zaroorii nahi
Husn saiyyaad hai, ishq fariyaad hai
Ye jo do naam hain, dono badnaam hain
Tum to naadaan ho, gham ke mehmaan ho
Dil zara thaam lo, aql se kaam lo
Agar aaj roshni hoti hai saahab sab chiraagho se
Zara sa farq hota hai dilo mein aur dimaago mein
Eh mere dosto, aql se kaam lo
Baat dil ki karo
kyu ke...
Sher dil ko na tadpaake rakh de agar
To shaayari ka maza nahi aata
Ke chaand sa koyi chehra ...

Sharbati aankh ke dushmano se bacho
Reshmi zulf ki uljhano se bacho
Woh gali chhod do, ye bharam tod do
Yu na aahein bharo, in se tauba karo
Ye jo dildaar hain, sab sitamgar hain
Dil jo dete hain ye, to jaan lete hain ye
Wafa ke naam ko aashiq kabhi ruswa nahi karte
Kata dete hain woh sar ko kabhi shikwa nahi karte
Dil machal jaane do, teer chal jaane do, dam nikal jaane do
Aur, maut se aadmi ko agar darr lage
To zindagi ka maza aata nahi
Ke chaand sa koyi chehra ...

Ishq mein yaad kuchh aur hota nahi
Aashiqui khoob ki, dil se mehboob ki
Yaad jaati nahi, neend aati nahi
Dard khilta nahi, chain milta nahi
Ya khuda kya kare, ham dawa kya kare
Dawa dard-e-jigar ki poochhte ho tum diwaane se
Ye dil ki aag bujhegi faqat aansoo bahaane se
Ye sitam kis liye, gham ho kam kis liye, roye ham kis liye
Kyu ke...
Aag par koyi paani agar daal de
To dillagi ka maza aata nahi
Ke chaand sa koyi chehra ...

Just received my CD that I ordered yesterday for this song. Thanks again Deep for letting us know it was on CD now. Listened to the qawwali tons and yesterday added a line for my siggy finally from this beautiful number. All these years I was truly missing out. What a combination of singers too, just fantastic! I am still trying to figure out at what point in the film this may have been used, on who it was supposed to be picturized on.

Doston, Apna Tau Yeh Imaan Hai
Jo Bhi Jitna Saath De, Ehsaan Hai
Umr Ka Rishta Jodne Waale
Apni Nazar Mein Deewane Hai

Thanks for the memories HF. Bye Bye.

If I'll guess, it is probably before Viru and Jaydev gets to Thakur...maybe on the trip to Ramgharh, on the train with some passengers singing along...? Just don't think of any place in Ramgarh that is suitible for such a song...
well...only the cast and Sippy's probably know, but we can all guess wink2.gif

I'm hoping to get this CD on wednesday..my cousin-brother is coming over from India...hope he has bought it smile1.gif

I was thinking the same - pre-Ramgarh. But I was thinking it might have been done like some other filmi qawwalis with 2 parties sitting on opposite sides. The volume shifts from one speaker to the other in this song - so that's why I was thinking that. Another thought was that it could be playing in the foreground during a wedding or other celebration while Gabbar and his men are going around looting in the background.

When you get it, make a back up copy right away and play that in your players - this particular disc is incredibly thin and subject to scratching - used to be that the Universal ones were all heaveyweight discs - but this is very flimsy. Cool collage though from Sholay on the inside cover - scanned it for myself, thought I'd share it. (click thumbnail for larger):

But in such case the marriage would probably have been mentioned atleast once during the movie...
I go for the other suggestion, since they havent shown the trip to ramgarh it is probably in the train...
btw I ahve e-mailed sippy-house, hope they answer me regarding this question wink2.gif

found this info regarding the song:
Anand Bakshi was the most disheartened when the qawwali song was not used in the film. The writers decided , for a qawwali in the comedy track of the film. But then, instead of the qawaali, Javed suggested the chaar bhaand of Bhopal. Chaar Bhaand, a dying art, is a composition sung by four groups, instead of the qawwali's traditional two, with the audience enjoying the exchange sitting in the middle. Through Javed's contacts, a chaar bhaand group was found in Bhopal, They came to Mumbai and played for Pancham in his music room. He developed a qawwali along chaar bhaand lines - an eight-minute-long musical interplay of words and wit between four singers. The qawwali was recorded but never shot - the film was already longer than the requisite three hours. 'Perhaps if they had kept it, i might have had a career as a singer', Bakshi said.

Thanks Deep - that was very interesting! That explains why you get the feeling you are in the middle with the sound shifting from speaker to speaker in some parts.

That's too bad that they didn't mail you back. But I really appreciate that you took the time to share the bit of trivia you did find out here. I just love hearing anecdotes about the recordings.

Hi, I bought "SHOLAY the making of a classic", and it was written about pancham, Anand Bakshi and the song:

QUOTE
For most songs that Pancham created, the tunes were composed first and then the lyrics were written. For Sholay Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics at an astonishing speed. Like Pancham, Bakshi was also at his creative peak. An army man turned songster, he was the king of lyrics in the '70s. Of the star lyricists who were his immediate predecessors, Shailandra was dead and Sahir Ludhianvi had aged into a temperamental artist. Sahir was favourite of G.P. Sippy's: GPS had first tasted alcohol at Sahir's insistence that the producer could never understand his lyrics - Mujhko na koi hosh na gham, main nashe main hoon from the movie Marine Drive - if he did not drink. But Bakshi was hitting the high notes with success like Amar Prem. Besides he had already notched up a winner in Seeta aur Geeta. He couldnt match Sahir's refined aesthetics, but he was exeptionally proficient and speedy - some of the songs were written in just an half hour - and that had its own merits. Also. Sholay had nothing in common with the sensitive, emotion-driven musicals and love stories of the 60sin which Sahir's songs had worked their magic...
...Soorma Bhopali would get to sing a song: there was room, the writers decided, for a qawwali in the comedy track of the film. But Javed suggested the chaar bhaand of Bhopal instead of a qawwali. The lyrics:

Chaand sa koyi chehra na pehlu mein ho
To chaandni ka maza nahi aata
Arre, jaam pee kar sharaabi na gir jaaye to
Maikashi ka maza nahi aata

The singers were Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Bhupinder and Anand Bkahi himself. The qawwali was recorded but never shot - the film was already longer than the requisite three hours. Bakshi was the most disheartened. 'Perhaps if they had kept it' he wondered 'i might have had a career as a singer'.

so now we know where the song was supposed to be smile1.gif
