hello friends,
here are two songs from sunhare din[1949].
the identity of the singer in the two songs is controversial.while hfgk mentions shamshad begum as the singer in the two songs;the solo ''thandi thandi hawa jo aaye'' seems to be in surinder kaur's voice .i am doubtful about the song''umangon ke din beete jayein''hfgk mentions it as a shamshad, geeta and sulochana kadam song;lot of experts identify the voices as surinder kaur, geeta and sulochana kadam.

here are the two songs for expert opinion.
music is by gyan dutt and lyrics are by d n madhok.
happy listening,
mahesh

Mahesh...there should not be any controversy...both the songs that you uploaded have the voice of Surinder Kaur...not only the voices of both the singers but even the pronunciation/diction of the words by both of them are quite distinguishable.

I am no expert in these matters. I agree with the openion expressed
by Mahesh (sk). Both the songs have Surinder Kaur's voice. However.
the 78rpm of thandi thandi was issued in Shamshad's voice. All the
radio stations used to play Shamshad's recording. I have heard it
so many times. Believe me it was much better sung and iirc, had a bit
more of orchestral music. HFGK, you know is mostly based on record
catalogs and gives singers name picked therefrom.
Thanks for the songs.

hi ummer and friends,
i remember raju bhartan described her voice as ''mardana'' voice.except for her saheed songs,i enjoy most of her hindi songs.recently i have obtained few of her punjabi cds and i don't think her voice is as ''manly ''as raju bhartan described it.
her punjabi songs are quite sweet and feminine though rustic at times.
i don't have any doubt about'' thandi thandi hawa jo aaye'' being a surinder kaur rendition;''umangon ke din'' ke baare mein abhi bhi doubt hai!!!

regards,
mahesh

Elsewhere I just added my bit about 'Meri ammi ka raaj bhala', whether it was Noorjehan or Shamshad. In this case too, all I can add is that the song 'Thandi thandi hawa jo aaye' is included in a cassette of Shamshad in my possession. Whether in the movie the song was in Surinder Kaur's voice is another matter.

Pradeep Sahib,

I have said in my previous post that 78rpm had Thandi Thandi in
Shamshad's voice. Would you kindly share this song with us ? It is
not available in the market.

Urzung Saheb

Presently I am based in Muscat and my collection of records and cassette is kept at my house in Mumbai, India. Hence, much as I would like to share the songs from collection with HF members, I am unable to do so in the near future. A dear friend of mine back home has already started the process of converting my collection to CDs, starting with 78 RPM records, which will be followed by LPs / SPs and hopefully, the cassettes. This is of course a long term project. I hope to collect a few converted CDs during my next visit to India and share them with you.
