Can some people, who know well, throw some light on my question, with details?

Thanks,

Venkat

I have changed many views in life since my childhood, but not my view of Rafi Saab as the God-sent Gandharva who visited this Earth briefly to spread ultimate ecstasy among genuine music-lovers!

Ok, let me explain the context of my enquiry. I know that US is a veritable paradise as far as tourism goes. Also, it is a vast, huge country, wherein you don't know where to start your tourist pursuits.

If one wants to explore USA in a systematic/cost-effective way that minimises the internal travel costs/time, there must be 4 or 5 states that account for 70% of US tourism, by quality, if not quantity! If yes, which are those states?

California, New York and Florida will appear in this list, no matter what. These three states are miles apart. You will have to pick and choose what your interests are.

Florid is good for beaches, and keys, some even love driving down the alligator alley. California has LA, Hollywood, cliff drives, redwoods and beaches. Vegas is not too far from California.

New York has Niagara, NYC, liberty, Broadway and many more national parks in nearby vicinity.

Many thanks, Marcilo, for the info.

To complicate matters further, there is another angle to all this. Just as most of us here seem to be in search of rare songs of legends, I personally like to choose lesser known tourist spots, which are likely to be quieter and less crowded. The analogy is that of Ooty and Coonoor. I always avoid OOty proper, and keep heading to Coonoor in stead.

Well, I tend to think that the problem of over-crowding at tourist spots in US may not be anywhere as bad as in India!

If you live in NY, NJ, PA or DE, one place with the highest tourist value used to be Atlantic City. The bus used to cost $10. When you get down at atlantic city, they used to pay you beck $25 in quarters and another $25 worth of food coupons.

US being a very huge country it is tough to pick tourist spots. Every state has interesting things to see.
Among cities, I would pick NY, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, SF, Seatle, San Antonio.
Florida is number one turist state; but it will be some what crowded in spring\summer.
I would also recomment a few very beautiful campuses, such as some, Ivy League Universities (MIT\Harvard, U Penn), Stanford, U Chicago, Duke etc.
For beautiful national parks and outdoors, Smokies and the western states.

Finally, where ever your hosts reside, there will be lots of tourist places within a weekends reach.

Well then look for national parks. These parks are less crowded than other major attractions. I am not sure if Niagara is national park or not but that place is crowded any time. Be it middle of night, it's like a big party.

As Exon mentioned, smokeys is a nice place to be in. Check out mammoth cave national park too, its not too far. If you are visiting other side of this country, you can have blast. Grand canyon to meteor crater (http://www.meteorcrater.com/index.php ), Hoover dam... list is long
