Hamara Forums _ Malayalam _ Yesteryears With Yesudas

Posted by: unni Mar 30 2005, 10:28 AM

Having scrupulously avoided uploading Yesudas's Hindi songs except in response to requests, I am starting this thread to present a selection of some of his most memorable songs in Malayalam.

I plead ignorance about Malayalam films; I am only familiar with the songs. Hence the names of films and composers will be missing. If 'hits' can help to rectify this, I would be most grateful.

Arguably, Yesudas at his zenith.

This 10+ minute song is based on Raag Durbari of Hindustani Classical Music.

A unique feature of this song is how he holds a note for 16 seconds!

Due to the length of the song, I've uploaded this again at 96 kbps:

Right since my schooldays, I have been hearing songs of KJY whenever I visited my uncle (my mother's sister's husband) who is a Malayali. Some songs that are come to my mind with a breeze of nostalgia. Trying to list them without having any inkling of the correct words or their spellings! Seeking advance apologies!

nee madhu pagaru (music by Usha Khanna?)
pavada venam ( a nice masti bhara number)
adatye kanmani - a beautiful duet with P Leela (?)
----------- ananda melam (the hindi version is 'jhilmil sitaron ka aangan hoga')
ashtamudi .... (a beautiful song in raag Kedarfrom the 60-s)

Are these songs easily available in any KJY collection? If yes, can someone tell me the title names.

If not easily available, then can some kind soul upload them? (if they have understood my lyrics that is!).

Regards-Archie.

Yes, Sis,

Just trying to get inspiration from members like you. Malayalis like Unni-saab, Priya, Hits-ji etc. seem to have more bengali songs than I do. Same goes for YOU too. I'm trying to brush up my Kannada songs as well. At present, all that I know is Guru's (KK) 'adee adee adoo' and Salil-babu's composition - 'dooradinda bandanatha'. (please don't lynch me for the typos!). Also, I have a very fascinating collection of 'Dasvaani' songs of Bheemanna. Songs like 'bhagyadalakshmi baramma', 'karuniso ranga karuniso', 'kailaasha vaasa', 'tunga tirathi...'. An early morning listening-session of these transport you to a different plane altogether.

Also I have a few 'vachans' by Mallikarjun-buwa & Basavraj-buwa.

And lastly, do not forget that my wife is Palakkad Iyer. I need to know Malayalam properly to figure out whether she only swears at me or has some other not so unpleasant things to say as well!!

Regards-Archie-da.

1959???? Wow, that is the same year as her first Hindi film "Dil deke dekho".
So she entered into both industries at the same time? Also, I did not realize that
Yesudas was singing at that time. I thought he did not come in till the 60s.

Yes, it has such an old-world flavour to it, tinged with our own sense of nostalgia. Picturized on artistes in the role of a young couple, the song expresses their hopes and wishes in anticipation of the birth of their first child.

Here is the fourth song, another golden oldie:

I visit India every year, sometime twice. Short visits usually. This time, three days were spent traveling, three days at home and a 3-day side trip to Cochin, Allepey and Kumarakom. Just a day in Bombay, keeping my fingers crossed the flight back would operate, what with the record rainfall!

Arrived here a bit late. Unni, you must have an awesome perspective on life. Best wishes for you Dad.

Upon request from the Malayalam sub-forum (Lingo Hamara section), here's a Yesudas song. From the 1986 movie "Raakkuyilin Raagasadassil", this tune was created by M.G.Radha Krishnan, with lyrics by Ramesan Nair.

Listen to one of the ultimate tributes paid to the "Bhaarya" (the wife), by the husband....beautifully enacted on screen by Mammootty and Suhaasini.
