India v/s Bangladesh – 17th March 2007

The outcome of India’s inaugural match in the World Cup broke the heart of billion fans. India could not fight back the less powerful Bangladesh in their first ODI in the ICC world cup 2007 held at Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad. Result - Bangladesh beat India by 5 wickets with 9 balls remaining.

All may put the blame on Indian captain, Rahul Dravid, who opted to bat first after winning the toss, as the pitch was not favourable for batting. However, it will not alone suffice their claim for their defeat ; it was the powerful bowling that Bangla team showcased in their debut match in the 2007 ICC world cup. Bangladesh’s Mashrafe Mortaza was awarded the Player of the Match title for dismissing the four important wickets of Sehwag, Uthappa, Agarkar, and Munaf Patel. Mortaza was ably supported by other bowlers including Mohammed Rafiqque who got the most important wicket of the former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, who managed to stay longest in the game, 43 overs, scoring a 66.

It was the careless wicket of Sehwag that cost the Indian team a stable start. Uthappa who had shown his best performance in their last series against Sri Lanka and West Indies could not take up the pressure. He too got dismissed early in the innings, scoring just 9. Captain Dravid and the Indian cricket maestro Tendulkar could not contribute significantly to crown their country in the first ODI of cricket’s biggest tournament. They scored 14 and 7 respectively. In the slog overs, India lost five important wickets, including that of Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, and Ganguly, in just 4 overs. They all got out for 191 when 3 balls were remaining.

Thanks to Ganguly’s resistance towards the left-arm spinners, Yuvraj’s powerful knock and breezy scores by the last batting pair, the Indian team could manage a defending total.

Bangladesh opened with Tamin Iqbal and Nafees. Nafees sacrificed the first wicket of Bangladesh in the 5th over when he got out leg before to Zaheer dicey delivery. Tamim contributed well and managed a half-century, but gave up to Patel’s ball in the 14th over. He had a wonderful shower of seven 4’s and two 6’s. His knock gave a moral boosting start for the batsmen to come. The other two among the trio who contributed for the victory of Bangladesh include Saqibul Hassan and the all-rounder Mushfiqur Rahim; they scored 53 and 56 respectively, Rahim being not out.

All-rounder Sehwag contributed his share in bowling. He grabbed two wickets, that of Hasan and Bashar, when both got stumped out. Munaf Patel got the wickets of Tamim Iqbal and Aftab Ahmed while Zaheer Khan got the very first wicket of Nafees. Bangladesh achieved the target with just 5 batsmen in the 49th over, when 9 balls were remaining.

With 2 points gained, Bangladesh will face Sri Lanka on 21st March while India will look forward against Bermuda on 19th March.

Ireland v/s Pakistan - 17th March 2007

The 2007 ICC World Cup venue at Sabina Park, Kingston , witnessed the retreat of the first team from the world cup. It was Pakistan who had a sent-off immediately after they were dismissed by Ireland in the 9th ODI by 3 wickets. Ireland achieved the target of 133 scores from 42 overs.

Ireland won the toss and opted to field. Pakistan’s innings did not add much enthusiasm to the viewers. The much-awaited batting spirit of the Pakistan team was missing in the world cup venue. Captain Inzamam’s contribution was also almost nil; he could score just one run and had to get back to the dressing room immediately after he entered the batting field. Ireland’s Botha got the credit for his dismissal when his ball was grabbed by Morgan. The contributing scores from the Pakistan team were those from Nasir, Yousuf and Akmal with 24, 15, and 27 runs respectively.

Ireland’s bowlers had a great time against Pakistan. WB Ranklin got three wickets, those of Younis Khan, Akmal and Azhar Mahmood, while Botha and Mc Callan grabbed two wickets each.

With a difficult pitch for batting, Ireland started their turn, paving their way to the league of Super Eights ousting Pakistan from the ICC World Cup 2007. All thanks to the unyielding performance of the Ireland wicket keeper NJ O’ Brien.

The climate played a hostile role in the match which got suspended in the 28th over. By then NJ Brien had achieved the half-century. On their resumption after the rain-break, Brien continued his attack smashing Shoaib Malik and Iftikhar Anjum and saved the team from a possible defeat. No other batsman could withstand the pressure of the hostile bowling. Jeremy Bray who had made a record score of 115 in the team’s historical match against Zimbabwe could not perform in his second match of the 2007 ICC world cup. The wickets fell one after another, with no one contributing more than 20 runs. KJ O’Brien and captain DT Johnston contributed 16 and 9 runs from 52 and 14 balls respectively, and they managed to stay till they achieved the target of 133 runs in 42 overs, even though they were set a target of 128 by D/L method.

Mohammed Sami alone got the credit of three Ireland wickets, those of Bray, Morgan and Botha. It was an amazing bowling from the dexterous hands of Sami that got the first wicket of Bray in the beginning of the innings. The other bowler who contributed to the fall of two Irish wickets was Iftikhar Anjum who caught AR White and McCallan.

Ireland’s NJ O’Brien was selected as the Player of the Match for scoring the highest in yesterday’s match against Pakistan. He scored 72 runs off 107 balls with six 4’s and one 6.

With three points gained, Ireland entered the Super Eights while Pakistan got ousted from the ICC World Cup 2007.
