(Dev) Afsar (1950) This movie was a milestone in Hindi cinema for sveral reasons. Dev founded Navketan and this was the first movie he produced under that banner. The Navketan banner went on to make many more movies in the years to come. This was the movie for which Sachinda gave music for. This association of Sachinda with Navketan, and especially with Dev, became a boon for music lovers. Some of the most memorable music ever composed by Burmanda was for this banner. Over one-third of movies he composed music for starred Dev. This movie was directed by Chetan Anand, elder brother of Dev. Chetan made the same movie years later as "Saheb Bahadur" in 1977. But the 1977 movie didn't have Suraiya. Also, Dev was 27 years older. The off screen romance that pervaded the private lives of Suraiya and Dev permeated through Afsar that made it so endearing. A word about Burmanda's music for this movie. With Suraiya's beautiful voice the songs from this album are sprinkled with sweetness of melody all over. And melody was Burmanda's trademark. Especially Suraiya's song "Mann Mor" is composed with a combination of flute and sitar is just unforgettable that makes Narendra Sharma's rich lyrics come alive. The song "Pardesi Re" apparently was based on Burmanda's own Bengali composition "Padmar Dheu Re". The emphasis of "Re" in each antara of this song casts a melodic spell. Also, I have read some place that the inspiration for the song "Naina Diwaane" came from Rabindranath Tagore's composition. The beats of tabla with sounds of piano and music of flute that accompany Suraiya's voice is an unforgettable experience that leaves you longing for more. I am missing two songs by Manmohan Krishna. The details are shown in red italics in the table below. If you can, please share these with rest of us. Now let us treat ourselves for the delectably delicious songs from this album ... Hello SP Please reupload album Thanks Regards, Yogi An open source Person |

Most of my CDs have been converted to MP3 albums several years ago and all are stowed away. It will be nearly a monumental and definitely a daunting task to go back to sift through those albums at this time. Sorry, can't help. Cheers, S |
