Annu Malik On Shankar-jaikishen, High Praise Options

These are some snippets of what Annu Malik had to say on a recent programme of Ameen Sayani.

He said that he was a great fan of Shankar Jaikishen, especially fascinated by Jaikishen. Since Hasrat Jaipuri was Annu's materna; uncle, he used to pester Hasrat to take him to the recordings of their songs. Once Hasrat complied... Annu remembers that Jaikishen was recording "zindagii ek safar hai suhaanaa". Jaikishen spotted them and "glass ke partition se ishaaraa dekar bulaa liyaa, jab unhe.n pataa chalaa ki mai.n sardaar malik saab kaa beTaa huu.n to mujhe apnii god me.n biThaa liyaa aur puuchhaa kuchh bajaate ho...tab mai.n bahut chhoTaa thaa lekin 'come September' seekh liyaa thaa..usskee dhun sunaayee...jab mai.n bajaane lagaa to unho.n ne kahaa tum baaye.n haath se bajaate ho? baad me.n mujhe pataa lagaa ki vo Kud bhii baaye.n haath se bajaate the."

Ameen Sayani also played a recording from an earlier interview which was in the form of a filmi muqaddama, in that old interview he asked Annu that he always tries to copy S-J, but had failed to achieve the success of S-J. Annu's reply to this was : "shankar-jaikishan jaisii kaamyaabii to kisii ko mil hii nahii.n saktii, vo log to jo kuaa.n khod kar gaye, ham sab us se paanii nikaal rahe hai.n."

Ameen sayani also mentioned that Annu had adapted quite a few S-J songs. For illustration he played 'ye shaam kii tanhaaiyaa.n aise mein teraa Gam" and then followed it with Annu's song from Refugee "mere hamsafar, mere hamsafar, mere saath chal mere hamsafar".
