Foot Tapping & Heart Stopping O.P.

The King of Rhythm

After a great night’s rest, you wake up one fine morning and start sipping a cup of fresh brewed coffee admiring the eastern skies reddened with beautiful sunrise. Then all of a sudden you hear a distant radio playing a familiar tune permeating the tranquility of the quiet morning. Did your heart flutter? Did you miss a beat or two? Then perhaps you were listening to a song carried through the gentle morning breeze composed by the King of Rhythm, O.P. Nayyar Saab. That music, like the beautiful morning you are enjoying, lifts your spirits even further up. For that moment you forget all of the life miseries and transcend in the joy the song provides shelter for. Now, that is the power of moving music!

There is some definite magic in the O.P. style of music. It is as stylish as the man himself. It is as interesting as the genius behind the music. It is as intoxicating as the distinctly sweet voice of Geetaji or beautifully seductive voice of Ashaji or the unique vocals of Shamshadji. The clip-clop sounds with the fusion of folk music and the modern instruments make his music a standout.

OP Saab provided countless number of some of the most memorable and hummable tunes ever. In a span of 42 plus years, he composed music for 54 movies. Except for one or two in the beginning of his career and one or two at the tail end of his career, he delivered one hit after another hit. This was one continuous hit parade ever put on display. Based on the premise to make melodious music, he created new sounds. He experimented by juxtaposing sounds of various instruments in coming up with some of the most melodious and memorable tunes ever composed in Hindi film industry.

OP by his own admission was an illiterate in music. He couldn’t read the music notations or the alphabets of music. Yet this “handicap” must have given him a new perspective of how an everlasting melody should be created. Sometimes literacy can impede in growth by discouraging to try experiments that create strange new sounds. Well aware of his own limitations, OP Saab still created many beautiful new sounds through the tunes.

I have been fond of OP’s music ever since I started losing myself in good music and the rich lyrics the poets seems to generally endow them with. Enthusiastically I have been collecting his albums over the years. Currently I have in my possession 32 CDs. That represents 60% of his films. I also have most of other songs from his other movies obtained from various sources including some from different CDs. In the coming weeks I would like to share with you the music of OP Saab from the CDs I own. The filmography of these CDs is shown in the following table.

Aar Paar (1954)

Aar-Paar catapulted O.P. Nayyar Saab to fame and fortune. Each one of the song is a foot tapper. The songs were enriched by Geetaji's beautiful voice along with Shamshadji and Rafi Saab. The song "Babuji Dheere Chalna" was in a recent Hindi movie "Salaam-E-Ishq." The song was picturized in its entirety but the singer was not Geetaji. This just shows the populaity of these songs even after 54 years.

All songs are from a CD. There are eight songs altogether. I am also uploading extended versions of all eight songs. These are all by the courtesy of the Forum members. The extended version of "Ja Ja Ja Ja Bewafa" is only 8 seconds longer. Except for additional music there is not much extra in it. Also, the extended version of the song "Mohabbat Karlo Jee Bharlo" is missing a word in the beginning.

Here are details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Parag,

Thanks for the great picture of Geetaji. I have already modified the pictures of singers by including this new picture of Geetaji.

Also, thanks for the encouraging words. We should have fun doing this thread I think.

Baap-Re-Baap (1955)

Here is another movie which has OP wrote his stamp all over. This time he had Ashaji singing all of the female songs. There was Kishoreda to help him out. The perennial crowd pleaser, the duet by Ashaji and Kishoreda, "Piya Piya Piya" still makes ones heart flutter. This was the beginning of his trademark songs where the sounds of horse hoofs become part of the music for that song. He was able to use this same tune effectively in other movies such as, for example, "Naya Daur," ("Maang Ke Saath Tumhara").

The movie boasts several songs. All except two are from CD. The exceptions include "Ab Ye Bata Jayen Kahan" and "Kaun Jaane." The latter song, this one shown in red in the table below, I am not convinced is from this movie but I filed in my music bank this song under this movie's name. I am uploading this anyway even though there is an outside chance that it may not belong here.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955)

Here is another great musical treat from the combinaton of Guru Dutt-O.P. Nayyar-Majrooh Sultanpuri. To assist them were Geeta Dutt and Raf Saab. All songs even today sound vibrant and very youthful. My favorites from this movie are Geetaji' solo "Thandi Hawa", Rafi Saab's "Meri Duniya", and their duet "Udhar Tum."

Guru Dutt plays a cartoonist in the movie. The cartoons were drawn by the famous cartoonist late R.K. Laxman. For years and years, seemd like forever I can remember, Laxmanji had a daily cartoon in "The Times of India" newspaper entitled "You Said It." Beautiful Madhubala, the heroine of this movie, died very young (in 1969) when she was only 36 with various heart ailments. Guru Dutt, the actor, producer, and director of this movie also died (in 1964) when he was young and only 39 years. So much promise, so much potential, so many outstanding contributions, yet both these great artists tragically dying so young.

Now for details of the songs of "Mr. & Mrs. '55" and songs themselves ...

Some bits and pieces of information on the music of Aarpaar:

OP's Aasmaan, Chham Chhama Chham and Baaz (produced by Geeta Bali and Guru Dutt) were superflops. Guru Dutt was upset for the failure of Baaz. Guru owed some amount to OP but was in no mood to pay him. OP was ready to pack his bags and that time Geeta stood by OP. Even though OP gave all songs of Chham Chhama Chham to Asha ji, Geeta ji did not feel offended by that. She made sure that OP got the assignment for Guru's next flick, a musical crime thriller titled "Aarpaar". It was kind of Aar ya paar situation for OP himself. Guru gave him a few records of Bing Crosby and OP came out with foot tapping numbers of Aarpaar. "Sun sun sun zalima" was sure inspired but "Ja ja ja ja bewafa" was a masterpiece.

All the songs of Aarpaar were superhit. OP composed "Baabuji dheere chalana" but he got to a quick-fast start for his career with songs of Aarpaar. Geeta ji sang for Shyama, Shakila and Noor in "Yeh lo main haari piya", "Baabuji dheere chalna" and "Arey na na na na tauba tauba" respectively. Shamshad ji sang the superhit title song and she will always be remembered for this lovely song. Rafi sahab was superb in all the duets he sang "Mohabbat kar lo", "Sun sun sun zalima" and "Arey na na na na tauba tauba" with Geeta ji.

Aarpaar bought OP into A grade of composers and more success followed...

Thanks Parag for the information. I heard somewhere that OP and Guru Dutt didn't get along because Guru Dutt didn'y pay the money Nayyar Saab thought he owed him. But the fact still remains, as you noted, that OP owed so much to Guru Dutt for providing him additional opportunities with both Aar Paar and Mr. & Mrs. '55 after the disassters of Baaz and others. Of course, many years later, OP came back to provide music for Guru's "Bahare Phir Bhi Aayengi" also.

Chhoo Mantar (1956)

Here is another winner from O.P. Nayyar Saab. One of the distinnguishing feature about Nayyar Saab is that he composed music with same verve and gusto whether the hero was Shammi Kapoor or Guru Dutt or Johny Walker. This movie is an excellent example of this. It boasts several beautiful songs. The duet by Geetaji and Rafi Saab "Tumhi Ne Dard Diya Hai" is still a very popular number.

C.I.D. (1956)

This was the movie in which Guru Dutt, the producer, introduced Waheed Rehman to Hindi audience. She just made a sensational debut in a Telugu movie (“Rojulu Maarayi”) in South, and Guru Dutt immediately signed her for a long term contract to act in his movies. For all practical purposes this was a stunning debut. Waheeda went on to act in many successful movies and reaped many rich laurels on herway to the top.

This was the movie also in which Raj Khosla, who was assisting Guru Dutt, made a second start as a director. He was a close friend of Dev Anand and Guru Dutt. He earlier directed Dev Anand in the movie “Milap” that was a commercial failure. He got a second chance when Guru Dutt offered him to direct “C.I.D.” This time Khosla didn’t waste his opportunity. He made a great movie comparable to any crime noir thrillers of Hollywood ala Bogart. Very stylish and very suspenseful. Also to embellish this was rich music with beautiful song picturizations. Raj Khosla had training as a singer and wanted to be one when he arrived in Bombay. This background and working with Guru Dutt made him realize the importance of songs and their picturizations. The picturization of songs of “C.I.D.” are still talked as much as its music composed by the one and only O.P. Nayyar Saab.

With this movie, Guru Dutt also was sort of “paying back” his friend Dev Anand. Guru Dutt got a break as a director with Dev’s own movie “Baazi.” For a brief period in mid-50’s, Dev was going through a “lean” period and was looking for a major hit. This movie offered him that chance.

There were only a few songs in this movie, but each one of them is a marvel. The rustic charm of Shamshadji’s voice comes through in her two solos as well as the complex “Leke Pahla Pahla Pyar” song. The seductive mysticism of Geetaji comes throug in both of her duets and especially the song “Jaata Kahan Hai Diwane.” The picturization of “Leke Pahla Pahla Pyar” was just astonishing. Shakila looked very impish and beautiful in the song to Dev’s trademark stroll by the seaside promenade. This song had all of the melodic charm as it was picturized on three different singers.

Then there was Johny Walker who almost stole the show from Dev Saab. His song sung by Rafi Saab, “Yeh Hai Bombai Meri Jaan” with Geetaji is another one of those beauties (horse carriage trots again!) that is still considered a homage to the great city.

Now for details of songs and the songs themselves …

Hum Sab Chor Hain (1956)

This movie was before Shammi Kapoor shaved his mustache and established his own identity as a "Rebel" star. This was an all out comedy. It was expected because I.S. Johar was at the helm of affairs. He wrote the story, directed the movie, and had a major role in the movie. It was made by Filmistan and was a huge hit. O.P. Nayyar's music contributed strongly for the movie's commercial success.

I.S. Johar was an award winning author before he entered into the movies. Soon he established his own brand of comedy. He also acted in several English movies. These include "Harry Black and the Tiger", "Northwest Frontier", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Maya", and "Murder On The Orient Express". For "Harry Black", he received a nomination for best supporting actor from the British Academy of Films and TV Arts (BAFTA). These awards are equivalent to American Oscars in Britain. "Maya" also starred Master Sajid who was introduced by Mehboob Khan in "Mother India." After the huge success of this movie, Mehboob Saab adopted Sajid and gave him the principal starring role in his "Son of India." By the way, the movie "Maya" subsequently became a television series in USA and ran for several seasons with Sajid sharing honors with an American actor.

The famous producer and director Yash Chopra got his start with I.S. Johar. Yashji worked as an assistant director to Johar Saab before started working in the same capacity for his brother Bal Raj Chopra (B.R. Chopra). After directing few movies for his brother he started his own production company "Yash Raj Films" and has been making one popular film after another for a number of years.

The CD has eight songs. However, the song "Hum Ko Hanste Dekh Zamana Jalta Hai" appears twice on the CD. They sound identical to me. Therefore, I am uploading here only one of them. If someone is interested, I will be happy to upload the other song.

Now for details of songs and the songs themselves ...

Naya Daur (1957)

Here is another movie for which O.P. Nayyar gave fabulous music that is at once youthful and zestful. This time he had Sahir Saab writing some of the finest lyrics. This was the first of the many movies that Sahir collaborated with Chopra brothers (Bal Raj and Yash Raj) until his death.

For this movie, originally Madhubala was cast opposite Dililp Saab. B.R. paid her advance and shot several weeks of film with her. Then the shooting shifted from Bombay to outdoors in Bhopal. This was the time when Dilip was making advances for Madhubala's affection and it was no secret in the film industry. Because of the extended weeks of shooting scheduled for Bhopal, Madhubala's father became nervous and decided to pull her off the film. Eventhough her love for Dilp was reciprocal, Madhubala decided to stick with her father's decision. Chopra sued Madhubala asking court to honor the commitment she made. But it was evident that the court was not in a hurry to make any decision soon. Chopraji went ahead and replaced Madhubala with Vyjayanti Mala. Dilip Kumar himself was called as a witness to the court that had open proceedings. He testified against Madhubala and her father. It was evident that Madhubala was about to lose the case. In the mean time the film was made, released, and became a runaway hit. There was lot of negative publicity and Madhubala's reputation tarnished and as a result she suffered severely. B.R. Chopra decided to drop the case to save the eternal beauty from further embarrassment and possible conviction.

This was BR's second movie. His first movie, "Ek Hi Raasta" was a huge success. During its jubilee celebrations, BR invited OP Saab to attend the function. One of the highlights of the evening was Punjabi folk dances and Bhangra dances. OP, who was signed to give music for BR's next film, decided to use this type of music as the main theme for the movie. No wonder "Naya Daur" heavily leans on the upbeat Punjabi music.

Akhtar Mirza, the story writer of "Naya Daur", initially approached several producers to make his story into a movie. Those decided not to touch the subject matter included Raj Kapoor, Mehboob Khan, and Subodh Mukherjee. But when BR Chopra heard the story, he at once decided to make it into a movie.

Also, when BR Chopra approached Dilip Saab to act in the movie, he refused thinking that it will not fly. BR was coming off fresh from the success of his first movie "Ek Hi Raasta" which starred Ashok Kumar. Ashok and Dilp Kumar were good friends. Ashok Kumar heard the story and knew Chopra Saab. He pursuaded Dilipji to accept the role. Under his pursuasion, Dilipji reluctantly accepted to play the lead.

Ironically, this movie won Dilip Saab a best actor award from Filmfare. Also, the story by Akhtar Mirza also won the Filmfare award. OP Saab's music also won the best music award. This was the only Filmfare award OP won.

All songs I am upoloading here are from CD. All extended versions are courtesy of the members of the Forum. There is that horse trotting song also present in this movie, "Maang Ke Saath." Apparently there is another solo by Asha is missing. I never heard it and also it is not included in the DVD either. The details of this song are shown in red italics in the table below. If anyone of the members has it, please share with us.

Like "Mughal-E-Azam" this movie was also colorized and re-released in 2004. Whereas the former hit the boxoffice bull's eye, "Naya Daur" couldn't earn the colorization money invested.

As a bonus, I am uploading a Lataji singing OP's song! It is only a snippet, of 45 seconds duration. She sang first few lines of "Uden Jab Jab Zulfen." I am not sure who the male singer with her is. Could it be Rafi Saab?

Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957)

This movie had several firsts. This was the first directorial venture for Nasir Hussain who hitherto was a writer. He worked for Filmistan's earlier hits like "Munimji" and "paying Guest". Nasir Hussain also wrote the story, screenplay, and dialogues apart from directing the movie.

Another first was that it was Ameeta's turn to be a heroine. Before this she only appeared in smaller or supporting roles. The studio owner Tolaram Jalan was convinced that she has bright future. Ameeta became his protegee. He decided to give her the break with this movie. The director knew this and the emphasis was on to show her on the screen in nice makeup with extra lighting. The publicity of the movie was carefully planned around her. When the movie was released and became a huge hit, it was not Ameeta but it was Shammi Kapoor who ran away with all the laurels. This was a breakthrough movie for Shammi.

Shammi who came into the movies in early 50's had an opportunity to act with top leading ladies. Unfortunately for him, most of these flopped. One of these was a movie called "Coffee House". His costar in this movie was the versatile Geeta Bali. During the shooting of this movie they fell in love and married against the wishes of Kapoor clan. It was Geeta Bali who pursuaded and then encouraged her husband to change his persona and transform into someone like Elvis Presley or James Dean. Taking this cue, he took the assignment on for "Tumsa Nahin Dekha". He shaved his mustache for the movie and promoted himself as a "Rebel Star". (Remember James Dean's classic movie called "Rebel Without A Cause"? Shammi even combed his hair to look like Jimmy Dean.) On the top of this, OP provided the exact music he was looking for. After this movie, for the new Shammi Kapoor, there was no turning back.

Incidentally, Ameeta was offered by Mehboob Khan to play the role opposite Rajendra Kumar in "Mother India". Ameeta was convinced that she will be obscured by Nargis's enigmatic presence in the movie and decided that it was time for her not to play second fiddle any more. She declined the role. She did get an opportunity to play the lead in "Tumsa Nahin Dekha". She acted in few other notable movies including "Goonj Uthi Shehnai" and "Mere Mehboob". But she never got the recognition she thought she was due and decided to retire early from films.

Sahir Ludhianvi was originally hired to write songs for this movie. However, he developed some differences with Nasir Hussain. He decided not to write the songs. He already wrote one song, the title song. That remained in the movie. Then Nasir Hussain hired Majrooh Sultanpuri. Their association lasted several decades where R.D. Burman, O.P. Nayyar, and other music directors had the benefit of providing many hits to the lyrics of Majrooh Saab for Nasir Hussain movies.

All songs of this movie are from CD except the exteded version of "Sar Par Topi". This was ripped from DVD. There is a small click some 44 seconds into this song, otherwise it is fine. The extended version contains in the end OP trademark "clapping" music compared with the regular version. That is the only difference.

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Hello Vijayji,

It is always a great tribute when a fellow music lover takes time to appreciate things that you love and love to do. Therefore, boring is definitely out of question. However, tiring may be another matter. Only time will tell.

Kamalaji,

You'r absolutely fantastic. I was always under the impression that this is a non-existent song. Also, this is the first time I realized that Sahir Saab wrote two songs, not one. Great upload. I guess more you think you know, it is always proves that you really don't know as much as you think you do. Very very humbling experience indeed.

Yet, I love it. Lots of cheers to you.

Here is another beautiful album from the maestro O.P. Nayyar. Shamshad Begum and Kishoreda are the stars of this album with able support coming from Rafi Saab. There are some melodious duets by Shamshadji and Kishoreda, the most famous being "Mere Neendon Mein Tum".

I am uploading 11 songs here, all from CD. There is one song missing. The name of the song is displayed in red italics in the table shown below.

With so many threads going on I got a bit confused. I thought the song you uploaded was from "Tumsa Nahin Dekha". Hope my above comments make some sense now. Now I know it is from "Naya Daur". Of course, Sahir Saab wrote all the lyrics for it.

Howrah Bridge (1958)

Here is one of the early classics of Shakti Samanta before he became a household name much later with Rajesh Khanna's "Aradhana". There is enchanting Madhubala singing in Asha's breathtaking voice "Aaiye Meherbaan". And there is Ashok Kumar, more than ever Bogart looking. Also, there is Helen in one sizzling dance number to the music of OP and the voice of Geetaji crooning "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu". To top all this there are some beautiful duets by Ashaji and Rafi Saab. It is a small wonder these songs are still fresh in minds of people and still popular even after 50 years. The ageless wonders!

The movie was shot in rustic Calcutta. It has a Hitchcock style climax, pulsating and heart pounding action drama, right on the Howrah Bridge span.

By the way, they are making this movie in color. But not the original movie. Instead it is going to be an animated movie with the same story and same music and songs of O.P. but instead of real actors you will see caricatures of them. Novel idea. We have to wait and see if it will fly.

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Hello Maverick,

Your admiration for these uploads is heart warming. Let me say this much. I have a huge collection of CDs. I have collected them over a number of years as a hobby. Now the music is passion with me.

The number of songs in my music bank runs into many many thousands. If you continuously listen to them without a single minute break it will take nearly 4 months to finish them.

Let us not get into the rest of the details because it is getting to be very personal. This platform is definitely not for that purpose. We're here to share and enjoy music.

Cheers,

Phagun (1958)

Here is an outstanding album from OP Saab. This has 13 songs and each one of them is a gem. Ashaji and Rafi Saab sang four duets. All are beautiful with the most popular being "Ek Pardesi". Ashaji has eight solos, one sweeter than the other. There is some magic and some inexplicable sweetness in these songs and Ashaji is right on the mark. Too bad this movie was a commercial failure. Sometimes music alone doesn't salvage the end product.

I am including here four extended versions of the songs. These are all from DVD. Rest of the songs are from CD. Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

The superhit song "Mera naam chin chin choo" happened to be the swan song of Geeta ji under the baton of OP. Then onwards it was Asha ji all the way with the exception a few songs for Shamshad Beghum ji. I am sure this has been discussed on the forum before, but just wanted to post it in the context of the songs of Howrah Bridge.

Thanks Swarapriya for these excellent CDQ uploads. My personal favorite from Howrah Bridge is "Dekh ke teri nazar bekaraar ho gaye". Love that one stanza by Rafi sahab !

OPN who called himself as a composer without any formal training in classical music, composed all the 12 songs of this film in one single raag (Peelu ? not sure). This must be a sort of records !

My dear Pratul ji,

I am really grateful that you keep me honest. Since several people have already downloaded the regular and extended versions, I thought to leave the songs alone. Also, no harm comes because of this "error" to anyone. However, I went back and changed the description giving particulars of songs.

Please don't be sorry to send in your suggestions. I think this type of scrutiny is necessary because we upload so many songs. Giving correct information should be everyone's priority. Please accept my whole hearted thanks for your keen observation and taking time to tell when problems exist.

Many many cheers to you,

Thanks for the note Parag. I read in some OP's interview that he told the interviewer that as a hindsight it was a judgemental error on his part to discard Geetaji after this. His contention was that Ashaji threatened not to sing for him if he still was going to utilize Geetaji's talents, even if occasionally. He admitted that it was his emotional involvement that clouded this judgement.

That is so very true Swarapriya. I have read several interviews of OP which echoed the same sentiments. And some time later (not sure exactly which year) this singer, who persuaded her husband Guru Dutt to give assignment of Aarpaar to OPN when he needed a break, made a call to OPN asking what she has done that he has stopped calling her for singing. OP said "No Geeta, I have not forgotten you. I will surely call you". That day never came ! Geeta passed away with this grief and OP regrets this one thing forever !

Jeher bhi chaha agar

Raagini (1958)

Anyway you look at it, 1958 was a banner year for OP. He had Howrah Bridge, Phagun, Raagini, Sone Ki Chidiya, and 12 O'Clock all released that year. Each of the movies had some of the finest creations of OP Saab. It was an awsome display of talent and creativity at its finest peak. At this juncture in his career, only Shankar-Jaikishan could compete closely with OP. But they were a duo. OP was a one man show.

This movie was produced by Ashok Kumar himself. It also starred Kishore, his younger brother, and that great dancer from Travancore in Kerala, Padmini, who passed away not too long ago after a long stay in US. Padmini was part of an act of three sisters, all talented, and all dancers; Lalita, Padmini, and Raagini.

Sone Ki Chidiya (1958)

Here is another perennial winner from the genius of OP. Some fabulously melodious songs in this album. Talatji gets to sing a couple of delightfully beautiful duets with Ashaji. The contrast in their voices wants you to hear these songs over and over again.

All songs in this movie are from a CD, except the extended versions. They are ripped from a DVD. The extended version of the duet "Raat Bhar Ka Hai" has a jump 1 minute and 20 seconds into the song. I tried to clean it up, but wasn't successful in removing the jump. Probably I could have clipped part of the audio. This song is so beautiful with Rafi Saab reminding you of some of the songs of "Baiju Bawra" all over again.

Do Ustad (1959)

Here is another winner from OP. The twist is that here Rafi Saab is singing all the songs for Raj Kapoor. Remember this was in 1959. Raj Kapoor, Mukesh, and Shankar-Jaikishan were at the top of their popularity during this time. Only OP can do this and get away magnificently with it.

There are eight songs in this album. Most of them are duets by Ashaji and Rafi Saab. The extended version of the song "Nazron Se Teer Maare" is by the courtesy of the Forum members.

Raj Kapoor, who always used to have a say in the music of his films asked OP "How would these songs sound in XXXXX's voice ?"
OP replied "They will sound #$%&*". Of course, the producer Sheikh Mukhtar persisted with OP and all songs in Rafi sahab's voice. Raj Kapoor made sure that OP did not compose for any of his films then onwards...

Jaali Note (1960)

Here is another movie that wasn't a runaway success but not because its music wasn't good. OP, as usual delivers once again. There are six Asha-Rafi duets, like in his previous outing for "Do Ustad". But the charm of Madhubala and Dev's debonair antics just couldn't do it.

The extended version of "Nigahon Ne Phenka Hai" is by the courtesy of the Forum members. Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Swarapriya,

Thanks for OPN's Jaali Note album.
From my side, here is the record version of the duet song, 'Chaand Zard Zard Hai'. The song lines are slightly different from the film version. The song's audio originated from HF member.

Raat Sard Sard Hai, Chaand Zard Zard Hai - Rafi, Asha (3:24 \ 128)

Thank You Very Much Swarapriya, for Jaali Note.

May be it is one of a kind of a gesture which HF members will do, to thank if someone is giving Jaali Note laugh.gif

This is one of my favourite albums. This really is cream of OP's music. Every song is heart stopping. Thank you very much for this album.

Hello Pratul,

I always enjoy humor. This time though looks like I was able to pass the "Jaali Note" without a hitch.

Kalpana (1960)

This is one of may all time favorite albums of OP. Song after song, these are absolutely melodious. Ashok Kumar not only starred in this movie but also produced it. There are 11 songs, all from a CD. Then I am including here eight extended versions of the songs that are by the courtesy of the Forum members. The quality of these is not consistent, but they are uniformly of fair to good quality. I do have another song in the library called "Holiya Mein Ude Re Gulaal" that is of 6 min and 6 secs duration. I don't know who the principal singer is. Also the quality is so bad, I decided not to upload it. If anyone wants it I can upload separately here.

OP's multi talents are in dazzling display in this album. This album is indeed a showcase for his prowess. There are several beautiful solos by Ashjaji. Also some great duets of Ashaji and Rafi Saab. But a standout song for the album is the Manna-Rafi song "Tu Hai Mera Prem Devta". Who said OP can't compose classical tunes? This song alone is really enough to make believers of all those who are non-believers. I have an extended version of this song included here. But there is even a longer version of the song also included here. The quality of this song is really excellent. It is worthwhile to download this beauty.

Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962)

Here is another beautiful album of OP saab. All songs are beautiful and very hummable. They are such happy songs that listening to them, at least for those moments, one can easily forget all kinds of worries.

By this time, Ashaji and Rafi Saab were creating what OP wanted them to do, sheer magic. The result is evident from these songs. I am uploading 10 songs of this album all from a CD. I know for sure, I am missing one song by Ashaji called "Humein Chaahe Badnam Karde". Surprisingly, the Earthmusic database gives four more songs that are also part of this album. I have my doubts about these because I found Earthmusic to be so much error prone. Does anyone know a better and reliable reference?

I have listed all missing songs in red italics in the table below. Is it possible that the song "Kasam Khuda Ki" is the same as "Tumhen Mohabbat Hai"? Also, how about "Teri Talaash Mujhe", is this same as "Iran Humne Dekha"? Anyway, please share with us if you have any of these songs that already are not uploaded here.

The missing song, 'qasam khudaa ki yakeen' is reported to be the introductory line for the 'Tumhein mohabbat hai tumse' song. But, I haven't found any audio with this mukhda line.

Now, two unaccounted songs remain.
1] Asha Bhosle version of 'mujhe dekh kar aapkaa muskuraana'.
2] Asha Bhosle version of 'Phir tere shahar mein'.
I don't know if these versions exist.

Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963)

The hit parade of OP continues with this great album. Some phenomenally beautiful songs in this album. Everyone of them is a sheer delight. Each one of them is a heart grabber. All of them stay with you forever.

There are nine songs in this album. These all are from a CD. I am also including three extended versions. These are from a DVD.

The song "Bijli Dole" was listed on CD as sung by Ashaji only. However, there is a second singer in this song. The Earthmusic identifies this second singer as Usha Mangeshkar. I am including her name for this song.

Although all songs are winners from this album, my two personal favorites are "Aanchal Mein Saja Lena" by Rafi Saab and "Zulf Ki Chhaon Mein" the duet by Ashaji and Rafi Saab. Especially in the song "Aanchal Mein", there is so much richness and passion in Rafiji's voice that you want to freeze the moment and cherish it forever. Majrooh Saab is at the top of his game and provides lyrics that touch very deeply your heart and soul. Absolute delights.

Swarapriya ji, Thanks for this album.
But, I am really sad to not get one of the best compositions of OPN, an Asha-Rafi duet, in a better quality.
The songs is
"Door Bahut Mat Jaaiye Leke Karaar Humara....
Najneen Bada Rangeen Hai Wada Tera" wub.gif

Though I have the song, it is not in best of the qualities. It has no noise, but bitrate is just 16kbps. So, I am uploading it on a shared site.
http://www.4shared.com/file/56360053/97609bda/Najneen_Bada_Rangi_Hai__Phir_Wahi_Dil_Laya_Hoon_.html

I hope somebody here will upload a better version.

And one mistake in the singers. 'Zulf Ki Chhaon Mein' is a duet, Asha-Rafi. :-)

Thanks

Pratulji,

Thanks for pointing out the error in the table. I have corrected it now. Actually, in the writeup I do describe the song correctly as a duet.

Now for the song you're referring to, it is the same as "Humdum Mere". This is of CD quality. I'm not sure why you think this is not up to par.

Kashmir Ki Kali (1964)

Here is another triumphant offering from the staple of OP. This one, like Kashmir itself, has songs full of youth and beauty. In this movie Shammi is paired with Sharmila Tagore. This was her first Hindi movie. She was introduced by Satyajit Ray in "Apur Sansar" and acted in several of his Bengali movies. This was her first Hindi movie. She still looks so young in this movie exuding endless charm with her dimpled smiles matching acrobatic romantic antics of Shammi. In fact, it seems like Rafi Saab is the one providing acrobatics with numbers like "Subhanalla" and "Taarif Karun". Like rest of the world, no wonder, Shammi adored him.

There are 10 songs in this movie. All but nine came from a CD. The "Humming" song, where Ashaj is just humming was given to me by a friend. There is also an extended version of "Meri Jaan Balle Balle". This is a gift from the Forum members.

One of my favorite duets of Ashaji and Raf Saab is the song "Isharon Isharon Mein". This is done with so much poignancy, so much tenderness, so much sensuality, that it sways you away.

Anandji,

If I can do it, I will do it. This is just a question of shuffling priorities. The rule I was following (to upload in chronological order) was just to keep me straight. But I just to want to show you that I can easily bend it when I have to. Aap ke request se badaa ya bhalaa self-imposed rules bhi kya ho sakte hain?

Mere Sanam(1965)

After a slight deviation with the last upload ("Pran Jaye..."), I just want to go back to the chronological order I was following to upload these CD albums of OP Saab.

This time it is the turn for "Mere Sanam (1965)". Another chart buster from OP Saab. Again, every song is simply superb. Al four solos by Rafi Saab are just magnificent. Of the three Asha-Rafi duets, "Roka Kai Baar" is a standout. But it is Ashaji who manages to steal the thunder with two of her three solos for this album. These are superb "Jaaiye Aap Kahan" and "Yeh Hai Reshmi Zulfon". Especially, the later one is just sensational. This must be one of Ashaji's top 25 songs. It was done with so much emotion and energy, so much vigor and passion, so much infectious appeal that it is not easy to overcome its magical effect on you. This song takes control of you and never lets you go. An absolute charmer.

Do Dillon Ki Dastan (1966) aaj ki raat hai ... Hum Toh Loot Gaye Mohabbat Mein Haaye Raam - Asha, Rafi, chorus

Exon

Exonji,

Thanks. And thanks for keeping me honest. I made the changes to reflect your suggestions. Again, many thanks for pointing out the error.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Mohabbat Zindagi Hai (1966)

Here is another winner from OP maestro. The creativity he unleased some years back is still in high gear here. Both Rafi Saab and Ashaji have three solos each. They all are beautiful. Rafiji's solo, "Na Jaane Kyun" is a real standout. There is so much sweetness in Rafi's voice here that listening to it makes one feel very very good indeed. But the real knockout is Ashaji's solo "Raaton Ko Chori Chori". What a sensational song. Like her song "Yeh Hai Reshmi Zulfon" in "Mere Sanam" this song spills with such sensuality making a very deep impression on the listeners.

All songs of this album are from a CD. The extended version of the song "Raaton Ko Chori Chori" is a DVD rip. But it came out very nice. I also have an extended version of the duet "Tum Sab Se Haseen Ho". The quality wasn't up to par. I tried to clean it, but not satisfied with the end product. I am not uploading it.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

About 20 odd years back, I happened to see this movie in a theater in Pune (for a morning 11:30 show). During the opening credits, the moment "Music - O P Nayyar" came on the silver screen I heard a loud seeti (whistle) from a music fan. That made me so happy, that people are still excited about the rhythm king O P.

I am not sure if such musicals from the fifties and sixties will ever make ways to the theaters again but now we do have the medium of DVD/VCD to watch all these classics and be able to enjoy the music over and over again.

Thanks Swarapriya for bringing back my memories !

Cheers
Parag

P.S. The haunting voice of Rafi sahab in the opening song "Pookarata chala hoon main" (I think the titles come on this song) is simply out of the world. Especially the way he starts saying the word "Pookarata..."

Parag,

I share your feelings. There is so much beautiful music OP, SD, SJ, CR, and others spread around during those years. That type of music such soul stirring and seem to be a joy forever. I never get tired of it. I am never bored with it. Refreshing. Reverberating. Reinvigorating.

With OP, choosing not a favorite one is always a difficult thing. But defintely, this one also is one of my favorite albums.

Sawan Ki Ghata (1966)

Following the great success he enjoyed with "Kashmir Ki Kali", Shakti Samanta made this movie with almost all of the same ingredients with one exception. This time it was not Shammi Kapoor but Manoj Kumar was the hero. Of course not many can be physical actors like Shammi and Manoj Kumar definitely was not in the same league. He looked ill at ease throughout the movie. It was a curious miscast by a seasoned filmmaker.

However, everything else remained the same for this movie. It has beautiful Sharmila as well as Mumtaz and was shot mostly outdoors. It also was embellished by another foot tapping score by OP Saab. Out of the eight songs in this album, Ashaji has four solos and two duets. They all are very catchy. Mahendra Kapoor has one good song and Rafi Saab has only one solo but a real beauty.

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1967)

There is another 1966 album with some beautiful songs that I was to upload ("Yeh Raaat Phir Na Aayegi") but it was recently uploaded. I will wait for sometime before I will upload this album again. In the mean time we move onto our next album "Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1967)".

This was Guru Dutt's last offering. He died during making of this movie. Originally, Guru Dutt himself was the hero in the movie. Little over one-third of the movie was shot. Two of the famous songs in this album ("Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe" and "Woh Hanske Mile Hum Se") were already picturized. When Guru Dutt died, his brother Atma Ram took onto finish the job. Guru Dutt's role was was played by Dharmendra.

Guru Dutt because of his bckground training was thought of as a great picyurizer of songs, amongs other things. The above mentioned two songs carry his imprint all over. The use of light and shade in both of these songs brings in a black & white movie some stunning effects. In fact, the picturization of the song "Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe" is a text book example of how it should be done.

This movie originally had S.D. Burman signed up to compose its music. In fact Burmanda composed the tune for the title song. Then Guru Dutt had some differences with SD and they amicably parted company. OP was a good old friend of Guru Dutt. He stepped in. Guru Dutt was still alive when all of the songs were composed. Apparently he was so pleased with the songs and their compositions that he applauded OP's efforts by sharing with him that those were not just songs but they are feelings.

By th way, Burmanda used the tune he composed for Dev Anand's "Jewel Thief (1968)". This was for that famous song sung by Kishoreda "Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara".

This film was a remake of another famous film K.L. Saigal's "President (1937)". Story essentially remained the same except the backdrop was changed from a textile mill to a newspaper publication.

Tanuja, one of the leading ladies of the movie, never looked so beautiful. I remember this movie not only for its its famous songs but also for the bubbly and standout performance of Tanuja. She was an absolute delight. Of course, Dharmendra never looked handsomer and gives a very understated and subdued performance.

What lifts this movie one notch above a simple routine average one is its music. This happens to be one of OP's best outings. He has been riding the wave of high creativity for some time, and this movie reflects that infectious enthusiasm all over. All songs are extremely beautiful. Both solos by Ashaji are beautiful songs. But my favotite is, Rafi Saab's solo "Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe". This got to be one of his top 10 or 15 songs.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

A little note about the movie :

Waheeda Rehman had deserted Guru Dutt and its said that he got inspired from that incident.

"Badal jaaye agar maali, chaman hota nahin khaali
Baharen phir bhi aati hain, baharein phir aayengi"

These lines were written and this film was taken up. Unfortunately Guru Dutt passed away during the making of the film. Relatively newcomer Dharmendra was roped in the lead role.

C.I.D. 909 (1967)

Continuing on the hit parade of OP, he still maintained his high quality of hummable songs with this album. It is amazing that he sustained this type of creativity for so long. But this seems to be the trademark of so many successful artists during that time or may be anytime.

For the first time in a long time we don't see Rafi Saab singing any songs in this album for OP. But Mahendra Kapoor ably picked up the slack. One foot tapping song is the duet of Ashaji and Mahendra "Tera Nikhara Nikhara Chehra". Ashaji also has three beautiful solos.

Yes, thats correct. This is one of the few movies for which OP did not call on Rafi sahab. Apparently Rafi sahab came late for recording of one of his earlier songs and OP did not like it. He stopped calling Rafi sahab and roped in Mahendra Kapoor. Very soon OP realized his mistake and called in Rafi. Rafi sahab, the great human being he was, hugged OP and the musical harmony continued...

Thanks for this relatively rare album. I happened to see this movie long time back and that time knew only few songs of OP.

Dil Aur Mohabbat (1968)

Here is another winner from OP Saab. This album has only five songs but all are sparkling. Of course Rafi Saab is again missing here. One of my top favorite duets of Ashaji and Mahendraji is in this album: "Haath Aaya Hai". Absolutely exquisite. Beautiful lyrics were penned by Shevan Rizvi Saab. The contrasting styles of singing of Ashaji and Mahendraji (reminds me of the famous ghazal singing tandem of Mitalee and Bhupinder), this song really stands out. It seems like Ashaji put her entire soul in singing this song. An utter delight. Stays with you forever.

The two extended songs are ripped from a DVD. The quality of "Kahan Se Laayi Ho", the extended version, is about average and is in not par with other songs.

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Humsaya (1968)

Here is another one of those beautiful albums that stays with you forever. Almost all songs are top notch. Rafi Saab is back after an absence of few movies with OP. He has one great solo "Dil Ki Awaz Bhi Sun" that echoes deep through the chambers of your heart. A lovely piece indeed. Ashaji has four solos. All winners. I want to single out two of them here. The song "O Kanhaiya" was sung with great aplomb. But my favorite from this album, and one of my all time favorites of Ashaji is the song "Woh Haseen Dard De Do". This beauty was written by Shevan Rizvi Saab. The way Ashaji gets into this song and delivers it with such intensity that it touches your heart with relentless passion and the feeling stays with you for ever. A superb allround composition and rendering of the song.

There are seven songs in ths album. Details of these are given in the following table followed by the songs themselves ...

Kismat (1968)

Here is another great 1968 album from OP saab. This album has only five songs but they all (except for "One Two Three Baby" song) are sparkling gems. That one song "One Two" is very oridinary. But there are two standouts in this album. The duet by Ashaji and Shamshadji, "Kajra Mohabbat Wala" is one of them. OP seems to have the knack of turning these female duets into memorable songs. This one is one to keep in your heart for the ages. However, for me the number one song of the album, and perhaps one of the top 25 songs of Ashaji, is the song "Aao Huzoor Tumko". Lyrics for the marvel were penned by Noor Dewasi. Once again for the superb composition for these enriched lyrics, Ashaji seems like puts her entire soul in singing this song. The result is that it is one of those gems that never loses its lustre.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Sambandh (1969)

Here is one of the great musical achievemments of all times. The music composed by OP for "Sambandh" is so different from the music he composed for other movies. There are so many things that are worth mentioning that makes this music just outsatnding and that stands apart from others.

1. The film was based on a Bengali novel called "Pratham Prem". The serene and serious nature of the subject forced OP to create music that was different from others he composed thus far.

2. To aid in creating such music for the theme of the movie, OP for the first time in his career selected Kavi Pradeep to write the lyrics. Pradeepji comes through in flying colors with some outstandingly rich lyrics.

3. He selected Hemant Kumar to sing four songs; one solo, a small snippet, a duet with Mahendra Kapoor, and a duet with Ashaji. This is the only movie in which Hemantda worked for OP. The result was absolutely fabulous.

4. After several years OP selected Mukeshji to sing one song in this movie. Mukeshji previously sang a duet for OP in "Miss Coca Cola (1955)". This was only for the second time Mukeshji was working with OP. The result is just astonishing. The song sung by Mukeshji, "Chal Akela" is one to be remembered for ages. It is one of those magnificent creation where the lyrics, the music, and the singing all work in unison to produce maximum impact. Mukeshji did sing couple of more duets for another OP movie "Ek Baar Mooskura Do (1972)". By the way, when OP was composing music for the Raj Kapoor starrer "Do Ustad", Kapoorji suggested that he should use Mukeshji for his songs. OP did not go along with the suggestion and went with Rafi Saab singing all the songs for Raj Kapoor in that movie. The songs became huge hits but the movie enjoyed only a modest success.

5. The songs by Mahendraji also have that wonderful feeling. Especially the song "Andhere Mein Jo Baithe Hain". Mahendra is good with such songs, but here he does an outstanding job.

6. Ashaji has six solos and a duet in this movie. Once again, Ashaji shows her love for OP's musical compositions. The song "Akeli Hoon Main Piya" is another outstanding example from this movie where she puts her soul into rendering it.

Inspite of such outstanding music and some rich lyrics and unforgettable songs, this movie did not garner a single award. It was not even nominated for any. That year, 1969, best music award went to Laxmikant-Pyarelal for "Jeene Ki Raah". Sure, this movie had some good songs, but none of them come close to the siongs of "Sambandh". Best male singer was Kishoreda for "Roop Tera Mastana" from "Aradhana". Great song indeed. But Mukeshji was not even nominated. Best female singer was Lata Mangeshkar for "Jeeni Ki Raah" song "Aap Mujhe Achche Lagte Hain". Very routine and ordinary song. Best lyricist was Neeraj ji for the film "Chanda Aur Bijli" for the song "Kaal Ka Pahiya". Pradeepji was not even nominated.

There are 15 songs in this movie. My CD had only eight of them. I am uploading 10 altogether. Two songs, "Tum Ko To Karodon Saal", the solo by Ashaji, and the song "Tu Hi Mere Din Ka Suraj" are courtesy of our fellow Forum member, Erumji. I am still missing several songs. These are shown in red italics in the folowing table.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Ek Baar Mooskura Do (1972)

Here is another winner from the staple of OP. It appears that he probably was experimenting with music at this time in his life. It started with "Sambandh" with glorious results. It continued with this album, with equally fabulous results. It probably ended with "Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye", another winner. By that time he was alienating himself from others and getting further and further away from the mainstream film folks.

Here he has Kishoreda singing several songs, after many many years. Results are very beautiful indeed. One expected many more great songs from this tandem, but it wasn't meant to be. May be because both personalities were very strong willed.

This is the third and final movie OP used Mukeshji's talents. Mukeshji has two duets with Ashaji. The song "Chehre Se", OP states in an interview that he was only thinking about having Mukeshji sing the song. But my favorite Asha-Mukesh duet is that delightful song "Ye Dil Lekar Nazrana".

Finally, Rafi Saab is back with one song. This song almost feels like a throw back from yesteryears. It doesn't have somehow the same feel that this song was composed for this movie. May be he had it from his music bank this song already recorded for some other movie but never used it and decided to use it in this movie.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Do Dilon Ki Dastan (1966)

This movie pairs Vyjayanti Mala & Pradeep Kumar. They were in few movies together, most of them making money. Of course, their biggest hit was Filmistan's "Nagin". Apart from acting in "Do Dilon Ki Dastan", Pradeep Kumar also wrote its story, produced the movie, and directed it.

OP is in familiar groove here. His proverbial horse hoof song is there ("Aji Peheli Mulaqat ..."). A cabaret type of song is there. This was sensuosuly sung by Ashaji ("Yeh Machalta Samaa ..."). Several fine duets are there. But real surprise here is that Kishoreda was drafted to sing a duet with Ashaji ("Khubsurat Saathi .."). The surprise is that for Pradeep Kumar, Hemantda usually sings. Of course Hemantda didn't sing for OP until "Sambandh" in which he had three songs. In mid-60's it was only Burmanda who used Kishoreda's talents as a singer for playback of Dev Anand screen songs. That is what is so intriguing about this beautiful song.

There are nine songs in this album. I am uploading only eight of them. I am missing one song. This is shown in red italics in the following table. I am requesting the Forum members to share this song with us if they have it. Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

P.S: I am following your "Abida Parveen" thread. Nice one. I have a modest collection of her songs (ghazals, sufi, kafi, geets, nazms... currently over 200; most of the songs you've uploaded I already have them). Even though I am at a loss with some Urdu words, the intensity with which she sings her songs makes them so utterly beautiful to listen to. On the top of it Urdu is such a flowery language. Parveenji brings these flowers to bloom and smell with a sweet and unforgettable fragrance with her golden voice and inimitable style.

Rafi Saab was not back with OPN for at least 4 to 5 years from late 1966 to around 1971.

These two Rafi songs from Hamsaaya(1968) must have been recorded earlier itself.

Actually, Rafi Saab's stint with OPN, for all practical purposes, ends with 1966. The later songs, whether recorded earlier or recorded after patch-up, were low in quantity as well as quality.

Hello,

As Exon points out in his message, I have now confirmed this, the duet by Ashaji and Kishoreda, "Khubsoorat", belongs to "Akalmand", another OP album. Instead of removing from the list, I am leaving it alone because many are downloading this song.

Thanks Exon for pointing out the error.

Nishchaiy (1992)

This is one of the last movies for which OP composed music for. "Zid" was the last movie. This movie preceded that. This was after his famous split with Ashaji. He gave music to only six movies after the split. Five of them were in Hindi and one in Telugu. Of these only Telugu songs enjoyed immense popularity. But they were regional and there was no national exposure.

The principal female singer of the Telugu songs was S. Janaki who has uncanny resemblance to Ashaji's voice. May be that is one explanation for the success that OP could bring his old magic to these songs. Janaki was also trained in classical music. She did sing several Hindi songs, mostly for Bappi Lahiri and some for Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Most of these movies were remakes of hit Southern movies and were made by the Southern producers.

The other movies of OP in post-Ashaji phase were missing that spunk it seems like Ashaji used to provide. You can feel the "lack" of enthusiasm on part of some of these compositions. The effort was there. But the results were not the same. That spontaneity he enjoyed when Ashaji was singing for him, that was missing from these songs.

In all fairness to its singers these are not bad songs. However, like the song in this album says, it is "Nayee Surahi Taaza Pani", yes. But for the ardent fans of OP who are used to being served musical feast with every new album, unfortunately these songs do not leave the same taste.

In this movie, "Nishchaiy", all female songs were sung by Kavita Krishnamurty. She had a solo and four duets with Amit Kumar. Mohd. Aziz has a solo. Different set of singers. A different feel of music.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Taxi Driver (1973)

Here is an early 70's album from OP. There are some pretty good songs here. He had Krishna Kalle sing one of the songs for the first time for his movies. Also, there are couple of other new singers; Ambar Kumar and Badri Prasad. At least they are new to me.

One of the songs "Baalam Harjaaee" is six minutes long in the album. However there are two completely different songs in this with a gap of nearly 10 seconds. I decided to separate them into two songs. One of them is "Baalam Harjaaee" and the other one is "Yahaan Chiragh".

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Heera Moti (1979)

Here is an OP album from post-Ashaji era. Here he has Dilraj Kaur singing all the female songs. Surprisingly, she does sound, at least on occasion, like Ashaji. May be she was trying to imitate Ashaji's voice or may be she was instructed to do it by OP.

Rafi Saab who was dropped by OP from some of his movies after a dispute with him is back co-singing three songs here.

I think these songs never got their proper due because the album was released during the tumultuous times of OP's famous split with Ashaji (or vice versa). Inevitably people were comparing, however unfair it was, how Dilraj Kaur sounded different from Ashaji.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

I was eagerly awaiting for this album. IMHO, Dilraj Kaur has done good justice to the songs, but the inevitable comparison to Asha ji overshadowed the talent. I think the producer Ratan Mohan stood by OP sahab when he was deserted by Asha ji and again IMHO OP sahab has given great music for this album.

Big thanks for posting these in CDQ.

Mujrim (1958)

Here is a movie made by F.C. Mehra of Eagle Films. This was the first of several movies Shammi was associated with Mehra. I think this was the last movie OP provided music for a Mehra movie. Mehra swicthed to Shankar-Jaikishan after this movie and the team made several successful musicals. The switching happened not becausae Mehra wanted it, but Shammi insisted on it. More on this in Shammi's topic on SKS at proper time.

Ragini, the youngest of the Travancore sisters, made a few Hindi movies. She was the heroine of this picture. Even though it was out and out a Shammi's film, most of the songs were picturized on Ragini using her dancing talent as the backdrop. So most songs are female vocals.

Incidentally, the Eagle Films banner is still alive. It is run by Mehra's son. In the late 80's he made a movie with the same title "Mujrim" but not with the same story.

There are eight songs in this album. Some are from different CD collections and others are from tapes. Therefore you will find their quality not uniform. With that warning, here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Basant (1960)

This film was looslely based on the 1957 English movie "An Affair To Remember" starring Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant. American Film Institute voted this Hollywood movie as "the most romantic film of all time". However, this movie itself was based on another Hollywood movie of 1939, "Love Affair", starring Irene Dunne and Charles Doyer. There was a third version also made by Hollywood in 1994 with the same name "Love Affair". It starred Annette Being and Warren Beatty. Also, a year before this, the 1993 movie "Sleepless In Seattle" starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks was inspired by the same movie.

If Hollywood made this movie this many times, Bombay Hindi film folks were not far behind. Apart from"Basant", Manisha Koirala and Aamir Khan starrer "Mann" released in 1999, was also had the same source for inspiration.

The movie "Basant" is a celebration of music. It contained 14 fun and frothy songs! O.P. Nayyar was at the top of his game and almost all of the songs were part of the hit parade. All songs were sung by either Ashaji or Ashaji with Rafi Saab except for a brief (43 seconds) title song that sounds more like that of Manna Dey rather than Rafi Saab. But I may not be correct about this. If anyone can identify this voice, please kindly do so. Nine of the songs are duets with Rafi Saab. Another is a triplet where S.D. Batish joins the twosome. Ashaji had three solos.

Nutan looks ravishingly beautiful in this movie. She was best known for her sensitive portrayals but the light side of her hasn't been fully exploited except possibly by Dev Anand (in movies like "Baarish", "Paying Guest", and "Tere Ghar Ke Saamne").

The songs of "Basant" came from CD compilations, DVD and other resources. Almost all songs have exceptionally good quality. You will enjoy these beautiful songs in such a good quality. I am including an extended version of "Chori Chori" with these songs. This came from the Forum members. This song is really not an extension but juxtaposition of two parts of the same song. In the movie these are two separate duets (Nutan and Shammi for one duet and Nutan and Johny Walker for the other). I am uploading these two anyway. It may not be necessary for you to upload this combined version.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Akalmand (1966)

Here is another mid-60's album by OP that has some beautiful songs. With the success enjoyed in only few movies he worked with Kishoreda, one expected more from the combination of OP and Kishore. But that never realized. Somewhere I read that this was because both had very strong personalities and their egoes came in the way to work more together. Thankfully, in the few films they worked together, they delivered some beautiful songs.

Some of the songs came from various CD collections. The others came from various sources like tape. Therefore, you may find the quality to be not that uniform even though none of them is bad to listen to. Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

HumTum ji,

Technically you are right. The song begins with some chuckles and silliness that belongs to Kishore da, I believe. There after, the song in its entirety is sung by Rafi Saab. Also, Earthmusic gives this as a duet of Kishoreda and Rafi Saab. I don't mind changing it to Rafi Saab only, but my information was based on the above.

Dear Swarapriya,

I have been on HF for a long time but have been a very infrequent visitor of late. One of the biggest rewards of my return - and a key contributor that has kept me coming back over the past few weeks - has been your uploads. The care you take over the audio quality, the trouble you take to supply detailed information about the films/songs, and your unflagging enthusiasm (shown most clearly in your absolutely incredible upload/download ratio!) have enriched HF. Thank you for all this!

I discovered this thread late but was thrilled to discover that may of the earlier uploads are still available. My collection of O P Nayyar songs has zoomed overnight! smile1.gif

A few points about some of the songs/films that have come up in this thread:

- In 'Sone Ki Chidiya', the nazm "aaj kii raat bahut garm havaa chalatii hai" was written by Kaifi Azmi and not by Sahir. Exon asked whether it was recited by Kaifi Azmi; I am not sure, but it *does* sound like his voice. Interested listeners can decide for themselves by comparing the voice to the 30-second Kaifi Azmi recording from 1969 that I am uploading below. (A later recording of the same nazm in Kaifi's voice is also available in the album "Kaifiyat" which has him reciting his own poetry, but I don't have that album readily available right now; also, that is a recording made much after he had had a stroke that made his voice much deeper and much more gruff, so it may not be an apt comparison point anyway.)

- Re. "chal akelaa" from 'Sambandh': OPN is quoted (in a Marathi article by the journalist Ambarish Mishra) as saying that he took Mukesh for the song at Asha's specific recommendation. He said he didn't normally use Mukesh but that Asha suggested that he would be right for this song; OPN says he was very happy with the result. He also says that Pradeep had suggested a tune to the song and wanted to sing it himself; OPN had to fight with the producer to use the tune and the singer of his (OPN's) choice.

- The lyrics of the mukhaDaa of the 'Basant' song "ham ne unake saamane pahale to kha.njar rakh diyaa" are identical to the prelude of the song "chaahe to moraa jiyaa lai le" from the 1966 film 'Mamta'. 'Basant' - which came six years earlier - had lyrics by Qamar Jalalabadi; the lyricist for "Mamta" was Majrooh Sultanpuri. Given that Majrooh asked Faiz for permission before using just one line - "terii aa.Nkho.n ke sivaa duniyaa me.n rakhaa kyaa hai" - from a Faiz nazm, one assumes he must have taken permission from Qamar too before using these lines.

Once again, thanks for your immense contribution to the forum!

Warm regards,
Abhay

(This snippet is taken from the album "Mirza Ghalib - Portrait of a Genius". This album was brought out as part of Ghalib's death centenary commemoration. Kaifi Azmi read out extracts from Ghalib's prose writings as a prelude to the ghazals sung by Begum Akhtar (2 ghazals) and Mohammed Rafi (6 ghazals) under Khaiyyam's baton.)

Hi,

I do not remember from where I had downloaded this nazm "aaj kii raat bahut garm havaa chalatii hai" few years ago. As per this file, the nazm is recited by Balraj Sahni. Somebody can listen and confirm whether it is so.

Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujala (1958)

Here is another beautiful album from OP. This one stars my favorite lady Nutan and the inimitable Kishore Kumar. Almost all songs from this movie were popular. Yet, I found it difficult to secure all the songs. The songs I am uploading are not complete. They came from various CD collections and some of them from the Forum members themselves. The quality of almost all songs is from very good to excellent.

There are eight songs in this movie and I am uploading six of them here. The missing ones are shown in red italics in the table below. I am requesting the Forum membership to share these missing songs if they have them.

Kishore da's "Surma Mera Nirala" was a chart buster. It still adorns any number of his CD compilations. Rightfully so. Only Kishore ji could sing such songs, yodelling and changing voice so many different ways. There are four solos by Ashaji, her usual quota for a typical OP album. As usaually the case, she always gives her best for OP. But for me the standout song of the album is the duet of Ashaji with Manna Dey "Baahon Ko Zara Lehraa Do". It was done very beautifully and stays lingering with you for a long time. I don't recall too many songs Manna da sang for OP. Can anybody please throw some light on this?

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Mai Baap (1957)

1957 was like a crown jewel in O.P. Nayyar's distinguished career. He was at the top of his game during this year. This was the year he helped Shammi Kapoor catapult to fame and fortune with some of the most hummable songs in "Tumsa Nahin Dekha". This was the year he provided sensational music for the multiple award winning "Naya Daur". This was also the year he provided the music for this movie, "Mai Baap". I believe there were only six songs in this movie. Each of them was a huge hit.

I am uploading five of the six songs here. These came from various CD collections. All of them are in excellent quality except one that has some what uneven sound distribution. This is the duet "Tu Dil Mera Lautaa De". It has a bit lower sound in the beginning but eventually it brightens up like Geeta ji's beautiful voice. The missing song is marked in red italics shown in the table below. Please share this if you have a copy of it.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

I think they are two different versions. It is not because of the starting lines; but even the stanzas don't match.
I have the song audio, 3:01min; likely similar to your uploaded audio. It has the following two stanzas.

1) dil chup raha gayaa hole hole dol ke ...

2) aaj nazar kahin ...

The above stanzas are different from the ISB lyrics that I posted earlier.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Here is the "other" version.
Length: 2:50
Singer: Asha Bhonsle
Bitrate: 32 kbps (sorry, this is the best I have, but it sounds fine)

Sangeetbhakt,

Thanks a lot for the missing song.

Khoon Ka Badla Khoon (1978)

This is one OP's albums post Asha era. He was desperately looking for someone to take Ashaji's place and in the process experimented with few. In this movie he had the greatly talented Vani Jairam sing all nine songs; four solos and five duets. Even though Vaniji is a very talented and trained classical singer (remember her debut song "Bolo Re Papihara" from Vasant Desai's "Guddi" in 1971?), I am not sure about the results here.

Vani Jairam was born in a music-oriented family. She was a child prodigy and many expected great things from her. She was trained in the nuances of classical singing and by early teens she was an expert at many of the ragas.

In a private concert, Vasant Desai spotted her and invited her to sing in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Guddi". She sang all three songs in that movie. But it was the song "Bolo Re Papihara" that catapulted her to overnight fame. This song fetched her several awards. Among them were Tansen Samman award, The All India Cinegoer's Association award, The Lions International Best Promising singer award, and The All India Film-goers award.

Vaniji sang in several languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Oriya, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marwari, Hariyanvi, Bengali, and Tulu. She won Best Female Playback Singer awards from Tamilnadu (1980), Gujarat (1975), and Orissa (1984). She won President's award three times. For "Meera" she won awards from Film World, Cine Herald, and Filmfare. She was also awarded Sangeet Peeth Samman award. The list goes on and on ...

This highly accomplished singer recorded over 10,000 songs to her credit! Yet, with all the credentials she possesses, and with ample proof of singing so many songs in so many different languages, it appears that people hardly know much about her.

Now for the details of the songs from this album and the songs themselves ...

Kahin Din Kahin Raat (1968)

Here is an album where Rafi Saab didn't sing a single song for OP. OP had some difference of opinion with Rafi Saab during this time. Instead of going with his regular singer Rafi Saab, he had Mahdenra Kapoor sing in this movie. OP did utilize Mahendra's talents even before this, but this time Mahendra was singing in Rafi's place. Even though Mahendra is no Rafi, (for that matter not many sigers could scale the heights of versatility and longevity Rafi Saab exhibited in his professional singing career), he did a very good job here. OP and Rafi Saab patched up their differences later on as Rafi sang for OP in some of his later movies.

There are eight songs in this album. I am able to upload only seven of them. I am missing one song. It is shown in red italics below. These songs came from various sources. Most of them from different CD collections. Others were contributed by the members of this Forum. The extended version of the song is same as the regular version except it is preceded by nearly 90 seconds of music.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Swarapriya

Many thanks for the songs and more importantly for the information about Vani ji. Its truly unfortunate that people does not know much about an artist who has sung over 10000 songs in various languages.

My 2 cents on the music and Box Office fate of KKBK :

A film with a name like that is rarely considered a musical. By 1978, OPN had lost the magic touch. And the film starring Asha Sachdev prpbably did not boast a great star cast as well.

True..Vani Jayaram certainly didnt get what she deserves. But one should say..that OPN's style of music needs a female voice with all the oomph...like Geeta and then Asha. As OPN once said, that lata didnt have the kind of voice he needs...which might be a lame excuse. Vani's voice resembles a sincere devout woman..or disciple for that matter. Strictly personal view.
She had some wonderful songs in telugu...many of them for child artists..like that one Sankarabharanam where she was just fantastic.
The only singer who was treated so shabbily would have to be Yesudas..he was never given his due. His was divine voice too.. smile.gif

With so many impeccable credetials she possesses Vani Jairam should have been a household name. But she isn't. Part of the reason may be of her own chosing. She probably is a very private person. May be she prefers to stay that way.

By the way, I feel the same way about Yesudas. I saw him in a concert once. His humility belies his talent rich career. If you are into his type of music, you are simply in awe. In one of the concerts Balasubrahmanyam (Balu) gave, he referred to Yesudas as his guru. That says something about both of them.

Thanks for pointing out the error. I have corrected it now. You don't need to be sorry to point out something like this.

Well 'Yesudas' is simply divine....
Whenever I listen to his rendering of 'Mata Saraswati Sharada...' from Aalaap - I just cannot stop crying....
Even Lata Mangeshkar could not match him in her version of the song - but sadly the entire film world except, for Malayalam Film Industry have not tapped his talent.

The latent problem with Bollywood is that they don’t seem to give importance to 'Bhava' aspect of singing as much as they give importance to all sorts of other technicalities of singing...
Most probably it is due to influence of Hindustani Sangeet on Bollywood that stalwarts of Karnatak Sangeet like Vani Jayram & Yesudas get neglected in Bollywood.

But I don’t have any complaints - as being a south Indian I can still enjoy Vani Jayram & Yesudas singing in Kannada / Tamil & Malayalam... smile.gif

This probably explains why singers like Geeta ji, Hemantda did not get as much success. Both of them always sang with great feelings and great expressions catching the mood of the songs. Yet, the preference of the MDs were other singers with superior technicalities of singing!

Yeh Raat Phir Na Aaygi (1966)

Here is one of the finest creations of O.P. Nayyar. Every song in this album is a beauty. All four solos by Asha ji reverberate with such ardent fervor and melody that they stick with you for ever. OP knew how to bring out the best in Asha ji. Asha ji knew how to give the best to OP's music. This chemistry between the two was evident in all the songs of this movie.

Sharmila, who plays the mysterious woman on whom the hero is passionately in love with, did a superb acting job. Her peformance adds so much depth and eeriness to the haunting songs of Asha ji.

More than anything else, the lyrics of this movie are a standout. S.H. Bihari didn't write songs for too many movies. His first major breakthrough came with that memorable song "Na Ye Chaand Hoga" sung beautifully but separately by Geeta ji as well as Hemant da. Not until many years later Bihari became a regular with OP. (I am including his picture below; he is in the mddle). This association produced some beautiful music.

This was the first time Mahendra Kapoor sang for OP. Nayyar Saab. He was so impressed with Mahendra that he utilized Mahendra's talents in many of his future movies.

All songs I am uploading are from a CD. The extended version is by the courtesy of the Forum members. Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Musafir Khana (1955)

Here is an early album of OP. Geeta ji sang a couple of songs in this movie; a duet and and a solo. As usually the case with Geeta ji, she is in her own element here, especially with the solo.

I am uploading eight songs here. These came from various sources; CD collections, from the Forum member contributions, and DVD. Because of this the quality of the songs is not uniform.

According to Earthmusic network, a couple of songs are missing from this album. These are shown in red italics in the table below. Now for a description of the songs and the songs themselves ...
