Salil Chowdhury is one of my most favourite music directors – along with Naushad, Madan Mohan, Roshan and O P Nayyar. In this topic I will be discussing Salil Chowdhury’s songs (both Bengali and Hindi songs) and providing links to various Salil Chowdhury songs u/led by me ( or good ones u/led by others ) in the relevant singer forum ( Rafi / Lata / Mukesh / Asha / Kishore etc. ).
Salil Chowdhury has created some fantastic music in Bengali and Hindi – both film and non-film music. Many compositions have been used in both both Bengali and Hindi – and some have even been used in his assignments with Malayalam amd other regional films. Most people who have heard only his creations in Hindi films have seen only one facet of his truly talented personality. He was also a poet in his own way … and in Bengali, he has written lyrics for many of his own musical compositions. Intensely interested in music …and in different forms of music – one can see the effects of so many music forms in his music – folk music of India and other parts of the world, western classical music, indian classical music, jazz etc. etc. …apart from his own style of composition which his songs were stamped with ! I have uploaded the original bengali number on which the Kishore Kumar 'maujon ki doli' song (from Jeevan Jyoti ) was based - sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

A lovely Bengali song of Salil Chowdhury has been u/l ed by jbakshi(JB) in the Bengali Kachha dhaaga thread of Unni
'Jaak ja geche ta jak' by Shyamal Mitra This is a very nice song indeed - lively tune and words - sung so effortlessly - i enjoyed it thoroughly !! The tune is so typical of Salil Chowdhury - with the flavour of folk music and western harmony (when the chorus sings the title words). But what is even more creditable is that the words were also written by Salil Chowdhury !! The words flow so beautifully with the rhythm and tune of the song .. just as if they were made for each other. Just wonderful !!
