Talatsaab epitomises the music of the early 1950s. His soft voice reflected aptly the softness of his nature. I have had the privilege of meeting him and talking with him very often in those days. He was truly a gentleman, a very cultured, unassuming, handsome man. During the 50s when he was at his peak, he was truly a ladies man. He used to be very stylishly dressed and even top stars would be outshone by him. But above all that, it was the way he spoke that warmed him to all. He never talked ill of others, and even later when his assignments dried up, he retained his captivating smile.
In memory of that wonderful man, I present a few songs from my collection of Talat melodies. These are mostly recorded from records or tape or received as CDs from friends. So pl pardon for any bad sound quality. 1. Song : yaad jab aaye terii, apanii guzarii zindaii Film : Mohar (1959) Composer : Madan Mohan Lyrics : Rajinder Kishen Bit : 128 Duration : 3:04 And two of the finest duets of Talat saab, both from the film "Apni Izzat". It showcases Hansraj Behl's class as a composer. Talat is as soft as a feather in both melodies and is clearly at his artistic peak. Songs : 1. dil meraa teraa diivaanaa, Duration : 3:11 2. pyaar kii rut dora.ngii, Duration : 3:13 Singers : Talat & Madhubala Jhaveri Film : Apni Izzat (1952) Composer : Hansraj Behl Lyrics : Asad Bhopali Bit : 128 Hope you enjoy these songs. More will follow.. Regards, Shriram |

Shriram ji, it was great to know that you are one of the luckiest persons who have met this legendary artiste, one of my personal favorites. I consider myself very fortunate indeed to have been born at a time when the film music was just beginning to soar. And I was old enough to recognize the magic of Talatsaab's melodies. But he was a very accessible man- at least then. We had a mutual friend whose place he used visit frequently. He would unfailingly regale us with a few songs. I can never forget one evening when he rendered the full "siine me sulagate hai.n aramaa.N". The great song was in fact meant to be Talat solo. But Lata was so enamoured by the composition that she apparently literally pleaded with Anilda to allow her also to sing. The way Talat rendered the song in private made us wish the song had remained a solo. Today being Geeta Dutt's anniversay also, I upload one of my very favourite Talat-Geeta duets from the film "Anandmath". Song : kaise rokoge aese tuufaan ko Singers : Talat Mahmood & Geeta Dutt Music : Hemant Kumar Film : Anandmath (1952) Bit : 128 Duration : 3:11 Regards, Shriram |

Shriram ji, I really wish I was too born at around 1930-1935 so that I too could have enjoyed the golden period of HFM.
Thanks so much for sharing your special moments with the great Talat sab. And another bunch of thanks for sharing a Geeta-Talat duet with HF. This is one of my personal favorites too, apart from "Arman bhare dil ki lagan" Best Regards Parag Please visit www.geetadutt.com

Shriram ji, I really wish I was too born at around 1930-1935 so that I too could have enjoyed the golden period of HFM. Hi Parag, Even if I was born in the 70s, I still can and do enjoy the music made 20-25 years before I was born. Don't despair for we still get the CDs / cassettes of the music made in the 50s, which IMHO was the Golden Age of Indian film music. Also we have such a great e-meeting place and wonderful people on our very own HamaraForums.... Shriramji, I second Parag's request for anecdotes of your meetings with Talat sahab please. I will definitely try to share my memories with you, dear Sirs. I am very amazed at seeing so many youngsters still being so passionate about music created before perhaps their parents were born. So many boys in their early 20s keep dropping in to my place talking about Anil Biswas and Khemchand Prakash. It is very happy as well as amazing. The internet has also played a role in this I think.
Today, I present the very first song Talat recorded - "sab din ek samaan nahii thaa", a non film recording under Kamaldas Gupta. Not a great song but a landmark song for the artiste. Regards, Shriram |

Yes SKG, what you said is absolutely true, no doubt about it. I probabbly get sentimental when it comes to the golden era of HFM. Shriram ji, looking forward to hear more and more from you. Today, I present the very first song Talat recorded - "sab din ek samaan nahii thaa", a non film recording under Kamaldas Gupta. Not a great song but a landmark song for the artiste. Yes, although the 1941 Kamal Dasgupta composition "Sab Din Ek Samaan Nahi Tha" was Talat Mahmood's first recorded Hindi song, his talent was recognised and accepted by masses with the 1944 run-away hit "Tasveer Teri Dil Mera Behla Na Sakegi" again by Kamal Dasgupta. I think it is in no way lesser than any of Talat's film songs composed by the likes of Madan Mohan, Shankar-Jaikishan or Anil Biswas... It is a pity that the immensely talented Shankar-Jaikishan employed the services of Talat Mahmood for only about 17 songs (if I am not mistaken), all of which were smash hits. I think now-a-days not many people know the beautiful Talat-Lata duet from Parbat "Hothon Pe Tarane Aa Gaye Ji", but that is because of unavailability of CDs / cassettes of Parbat and also Vividh Bharti may have never played any songs from Parbat. I am tempted to upload that duet here... Song: Hothon Pe Tarane Aa Gaye Ji Film: Parbat Yesr of Release: 1952 Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri Music: Shankar-Jaikishan Singers: Talat Mahmood & Lata Mangeshkar Regards, SKG. =============================================== "Be the change you want to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi =============================================== |

I consider myself very lucky to have a chat with Talat sa'ab face to face. I still remember the incident way back in 1975 when I was doing my PG at IIT Kharagpur, a Talat night was being organized at Kalamandir, Calcutta. Talat Sa'ab was staying at the Grand Hotel, Esplanade. I, along with one of my classmates, also an ardent Talat fan (unfortunately the third, incidentally an HF member now, couldn't make it) sneaked into his room at the Hotel coaxing to be organizers of Kalamandir. Already vexed up with his fans, initially he was annoyed and didn't allow us but later on when he came to know that we were PGs he calmed down and gave us only two minutes. Soon he looked impressed when we were talking about our likings. He was narrating how he went from Cal to Bombay, his experience as an actor, how he used to respect Anil Biswas, vaghaira vaghaira. When we asked whether he would sing our farmaish from 'Doraha', 'Gavaiya' and 'Mera Salaam' he said "are bhai yeh gaane to sirf aap jaison ke liye hain, aam log to wohi sunna chahte hain jo unhen mualoom ho". He still promised that he would try to sing mohabbat tark ki... from 'Doraha' and we helped him the lyrics which he had forgotten. He rehearsed in front of us also. After nearly 30 minutes we thought that it was too much of a liberty of him and took leave. In the evening after the program during the autograph session he called us separately and asked how was the program. He apologized for not presenting the farmaishi song from 'Doraha' for want of time.
To commemorate this incident here is the song from 'Doraha' written by Sahir, his first one for films. To me it is the best compositions in the pathos, ever written, composed and sung. --Balaji |
