S.Janaki

This is one singer who has captivated audiences through space and time. Her style of singing was beyond compare. Her tremulous voice had (and still retains), in my opinion, the "nichod" of both Lata's and Asha's singing styles put together.

Along with Yesudas, Janaki lorded over Malayalam film music. Her songs capture all the sweetness and beauty of Malayalam - the language and the songs. All this inspite of the fact that she was not a Malayali.

Here now is a beautiful Yesu-Janaki duet.

Very much true...She is a sensation...My personnal observation she is second only to Lataji in Indian music..Let us move this topic forward...Like to hear from other Keralites.

Allright folks. Here's a personal favorite.

From the 1983 movie Koodevide, this song is picturized on "Alice", played by Suhaasini. This beautiful song has lyrics by the inimitable O.N.V.Kurup and was set to tune by Johnson. It reminds me of the Konna tree (Cassia fistula for the botanically inclined) in my idyllic village back home, and takes me back through a cataclysm of emotions -

I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream
I know you, the gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam
Yes,I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem
But if I know you, I know what you'll do
You'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream
