The Three Reigining Queens

One was a beauty queen. Madhubala was her screen name. The other was a tragedy queen. She was known as Meena Kumari to the movie fans. The third one was a romantic queen. She was known as Nargis. All three more or less came into the movie field just about the same time. All of them started as child artistes. They shaped the industry with their charismatic personalities. They showed how to smile, how to bear pain, and how to fall in love. Their personal lives were marred with tragedies. They died very young.

They set aside thier own problems to entertain us in their own inimitable way. They ruled the Hindi film world for nearly three decades, each in her own way. In the next few months we will take a look at the songs from their albums more closely.

Madhubala – The Beauty Queen

Born on the Valentine’s Day in 1933, like a beautiful rose Madhubala lived only for a short period of time but not before spreading her fragrance all over. She was just young 36 when she passed away. But with a smile that could light up thousand buildings she entertained film audience with her alluring radiance. Born with a hole in her heart, a birth defect that eventually took her young life, she took acting assignments enduring endless pain so that she could support her loved ones.

Madhubala entered into the movies when she was only nine years old. She acted in many movies with her given name Mumtaz (in movies as Baby Mumtaz). Her very first film in 1942, “Basant”, was a huge success. It was great Devika Rani christened her as Madhubala when she took up assignment to act as a heroine when she was barely 14. Her tall and beautiful figure belied her age. Her first adult assignment was in Kidar Sharma’s “Neel Kamal”, opposite Raj Kapoor.

Her first huge success as an adult star came in 1949 as the heroine of “Mahal” opposite Ashok Kumar. This movie catapulted Madhubala to be a bankable star. It also gave Lata Mangeshakar recognition and a name to be remembered for her rendering of that great song “Aayega Aanewaala”.

Madhubala’s congenital heart ailment caused severe problems with her shooting assignments. She was so ill that many times people saw her vomit blood. It was during the shooting of Vasan’s (of “Chandralekha” fame) “Bahut Din Huwe” she became extremely ill. Vasan and his family kept it as a secret and groomed her back to good health. Madhubala was ever grateful to Vasan for this gesture. A thoroughly private person, she attended the premiere of “Bahut Din” as goodwill towards Vasan.

Her beauty and fame did not go unnoticed by Hollywood. Magazines over their published her pictures and stories. Frank Capra (of “It Happened One Night” fame – “Chori Chori” in Hindi) when in Bombay met Madhubala and wanted her to star in his next project. However, Madhubala’s father was dead against this idea and said a firm “no” to Capra.

In need of money to support her family, Madhubala indiscriminately went on signing for movies that didn’t help her reputation as a serious actress. During this time she was also romantically involved with Dilip Kumar. But their marriage never materialized because Madhubala’s father was against it. She was signed to star opposite Dilip in B.R. Chopra’s “Naya Daur (1957)” but after the movie made some progress she decided to withdraw at her father’s insistence. Her father felt that the extensive outdoor shooting planned for the movie was just another pretext for Dilip to be with Madhubala. Upset, Chopra went to the court. Kumar testified against Madhubala in the court proceedings. She lost the case. Her pride and reputation were irreparably damaged because of this episode.

In 1960, “Mughal-E-Azam”, gave her a brief reprieve. She was magnificent as a doomed lover. Her beauty dazzled not only Salim but the cinegoers all over. But all this came at a price. She was performing some intimate romantic scenes in the film with her estranged lover Dilip. This was taking a heavy emotional toll on her. The movie also demanded her to be in shackles some time and Madhubala who was already in frail health has to endure this physical taxation. This she never complained to the director Asif who had no clue that she was having serious such health problems. A true professional she was, she carried the demands of her role with great aplomb and no complaints.

Madhubala married Kishore Kumar in 1960. Neither side of the families were happy with this. Though married, they hardly lived together. Never happy in her personal life, and always of very frail health, Madhubala died because of the complications resulting from heart condition in 1969, shortly after her 36th birthday.

Madhubala made some 70 plus movies in her career. She left behind the legacy of a truly professional performer who was very private in many ways. She lighted millions of fans with an infectious smile that usually burst into an unforgettable laughter.

In the next few months we will look at the songs from the movie albums in which Madhubala starred. I don’t have her early work, but from late 40’s I have most of her albums in CDs that I can share. I am hoping that the Forum members can contribute songs for the missing albums.

Here is Madhubala's filmography ...

Meena Kumari - The Tragedy Queen

Here is another legendary queen who lived to be only 39 years old. Yet, in a film career that began as a child star when she was only seven, she went onto act in over 90 movies.

She was born to a Muslim father and a Hindu mother and was named Mahajabeen Bano. She was renamed as Baby Meena for her first movie “Leatherface” that was directed by Vijay Bhatt who will eventually cast her in that great musical “Baiju Bawra (1952)”.

Baby Meena’s early career was dominated by either mythological or fantasy movies. But it was “Baiju Bawra” that got her name and recognition. She was the first actress to win the Filmfare ward for her role. The role of Baiju led to many more such roles where she portrayed a suffering woman. She did manage to act in few lighthearted movies like “Azaad (1955)” and “Kohinoor (1960)”.

But the movie she will be remembered forever is “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962)”. As Chhoti Bahu, her landmark performance in the movie is considered to be one of the greatest by a professional actress in Indian cinema. Ironically, the role she played in this movie closely resembled her personal life, that of neglect, tragedy, and alcohol use.

Meenaji was married to the writer and director Kamal Amrohi who was many (15) years senior to her. Together they planned to make “Pakeezah”. They started working on this movie in 1958. But many things happened and the shooting was completely stopped. Meena Kumari and her husband got separated and eventually from each other.

Shattered with the divorce, Meenaji took to drinking. Soon she became addicted to alcohol as it was the only channel through which she was able to find some solace. To break the stalemate, Nargis and Sunil Dutt took the initiative and convinced Meenaji and Amrohi that they should complete the movie. Despite her failing health, Meenaji finished the film. After 14 years in the making, the movie was finally released in February 1972. Movie wasn’t a success when it was released. But a month after the movie hit the screens, Meenaji died in March 1972, from complications resulting in her heavy drinking that resulted in liver cirrhosis. After her tragic death, the movie “Pakeezah” took off. It became one of the biggest hits of her career.

In the next few months we will look at the songs from the movie albums in which Meena Kumari starred. I don’t have her most of her early work from 40’s but starting from late 40’s I do have albums in CDs that I can share. I am hoping that the Forum members can contribute songs for the missing albums.

Nargis - The Romantic Queen

Nargis was born in 1929 as Fatima Rashid. Her father was a Hindu and her mother a Muslim. She appeared as a child star when she was six years old in the film “Talash-E-Haq”. She acted in the movie as Baby Nargis. But she didn’t star in earnest until her next movie, “Tamanna”, in 1942 when she just turned a new teenager. Her first adult role was in Mehboob’s “Taqdeer” made in 1943. Her costar was Motilal.

As a romantic lady, she made many movies with Raj Kapoor, altogether 16 of them that is almost 30% considering that Nargis made only 50 plus movies in her professional acting career. But Nargis will be remembered for one role for the movie “Mother India (1957)”. In this movie, she gave a performance of her lifetime where she goes through many phases of life from a young bride and old mother. She won accolades and awards throughout the world for one of the greatest performances by any actress Indian movies has seen. She won the best actress award for her role at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. She still is the only woman to achieve that distinction.

After ending her apparent affair with Raj Kapoor, she married the fellow actor Sunil Dutt. Soon after the marriage she acted only in few movies. She returned to act in 1967 in “Raat Aur Din” a film her brother actor Anwar Hussain produced. She won the inaugural National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in that movie. Incidentally, Nargis was the first movie personality to be honored with the Padma Shri award. She was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

Wit her husband she formed a cultural troupe whose mission was to go to frontiers to entertain Indian troops. The troupe successfully recruited many popular singers and actors for these performances.

Nargis developed pancreatic cancer. She was treated in New York but without much success. She returned to India but her ill health took her last breath away in 1981. She would have been 52 in another month. Her death came two days before her son, Sanjay Dutt’s, first movie “Rocky” was released. Sunil Dutt established a Cancer Foundation in her memory. The Foundation promotes research and development to find the cure for cancer.

In the next few months we will look at the songs from the movie albums in which Nargis starred. I don’t have her early work, but from late 40’s I have most of her albums in CDs that I can share. I am hoping that the Forum members can contribute songs for the missing albums.

(Madhubala) Basant (1942)

This was Madhubala's first movie as a child artiste. She used her real name Baby Mumtaz for the movie. The music for this movie was credited to Pannalal Ghosh. Apparently it was Anil Biswas who composed the music. May be some of our expert members can elaborate on this.

Thanks to a friend of mine, I was able to secure most of the songs for this movie. Unfortunately the quality is so terrible, I have decided not to upload them. Only two songs have better quality. I will upload these. I am giving the complete listings of the songs below. If anyone is interested, I can upload the other songs.

Here is a description of the songs from which I am uploading "Hua Kya Qasoor" and "kaanta Laagi". Rest of the songs are available on request ...

This thread is going to be the "Kohinoor" in the SKS crown. Can not thank you enough for starting this excellent topic. When I read your "Muse and Music" thread, the very first thought which came to my mind was why you did not include Meena Kumari ji and Madhubala ji, two of the most respected and talented artists of the golden era of Hindi films. Now you have fulfilled my dream request and and also added the ever expressive Nargis ji to this thread.

All the best wishes on this ambitious and entertaining topic you have started. Hope all the music lovers will flock to this thread and will also contribute the missing songs.

Warmest Regards

I have all the Basant (1942) songs uploaded so far and the quality is good. If BC, Taiyab53 or your u/l's lack in quality on any song, please let me know...my version should hopefully be better...

Humko Hain Pyaari must've been a duet of Parul Ghosh (the family connection between Pannalal and Anil Biswas biggrin.gif ) and Madhu Bala. Madhubala's the one singing off-key!!! It is highly likely that Anil Biswas composed for Basant (1942) and Police (1944) but could not take the screen credit because of a quota on number of films. That was a busy period for him working on superhit albums like Kismat (most successful film in indian cinematic history adjusted for inflation), Dilip Kumar's debut Jwar Bhata and Mehboob Khan's Roti.

I'm uploading three songs from Basant not uploaded so far...quality is fine...the Parul Ghosh, Arun Kumar duet Ek Duniya Basa Le is very good...by the way, I always enjoy your threads....just not in the habit of adding to the tumult of praise when its already well recognised...

Thanks for starting this very nice thread.
Some time ago, there was discussion that two songs picturized on young Madhubala in Basant were sung by Shanti Sudha Ghosh, daughter of Parul and Pannalal Ghosh.

SP,

Thanks for starting this very nice thread.
Some time ago, there was discussion that two songs picturized on young Madhubala in Basant were sung by Shanti Sudha Ghosh, daughter of Parul and Pannalal Ghosh.

Exon

Thanks Exon. About who sang the songs, I will leave this up to the experts to decide.

Cheers,

In the next few months we will look at the songs from the movie albums in which Madhubala starred. I don’t have her early work, but from late 40’s I have most of her albums in CDs that I can share. I am hoping that the Forum members can contribute songs for the missing albums.

It is really a shame that the copyright of most of the songs of 40-60s songs are with HMV and they do not take any interest to release mastered or as is version of those albums ( knowing they have huge takers!). Would love to listen to albums like Mehlon Ke Khwab, Insaan Jaag Utha, Dhake Ki Malmal, Daera, Darogaji in CDQ which will probably never happen. Sigh!

Has HMV lost all its recordings? angry.gif

(Meena) Leatherface (1939)

This was Meena Kumari's first movie as a child artiste. Its another name was "Farzand-E-Watan". It was directed by Vijay Bhatt who will later make Meena Kumari a household name with his "Baiju Bawra (1952)". This movie starred besides Meena Kumari, Mehtab and Jairaj in the lead. It has a pair of music directors; Lallubhai Nayak and Shakarrao.

Unfortunately I do not have a single song from this movie. I am requesting the Forum members to share the songs of this album if they have them. Thanks.

The Three Reigining Queens

One was a beauty queen. Madhubala was her screen name. The other was a tragedy queen. She was known as Meena Kumari for the movie fans.

In the next few months we will take a look at the songs from their albums more closely.

is Raj Kapoor again. The voice seems very similar to the one in the male solo
and we know that is RK.

(Nargis) Talash-E-Haq (1935)

This was the first movie of Nargis who was introduced as a child star with the name Baby Rani. It was produced and directed by Nargis' own mother Jaddan Bai who also composed its music. Bai has the distinction of being the first ever female music director. In the same year Saraswati Devi also directed the music for "Jawani Ki Diwani" but Jaddan Bai's was the first to come out months beore the "Diwani" movie.

Jaddan Bai was a versatile lady who was also a singer and actress. She used to sing daadraas and thumris over the radio and was quite popular. She was also a gramophone record artist. While performing in a show she was noticed by K.L. Saigal who encouraged her to act and sing in the movies.

I am attaching a photograph of Jaddan Bai with this write up. She is standing next to Dilip Kumar where as Nargis is with Mehboob Khan.

Unfortunately, I don't have a single song from this movie. If anyone of you have it, please kindly share.

There has been a lot of discussion about the male voice(s) in this song. I listened to this song repeatedly and I feel that there are two different male voices in the this song. Based on my ears, none of them sound like Raj Kapoor. I remember Mahesh Sharma ji confirming this understanding during the discussion of this song in Geeta Dutt forum some time back.

I read somewhere that Teri Yaad Aaye Sanwariya (or some other Noor Jehan song in Lal Haveli) was actually composed by C. Ramchandra, who was Mir Saheb's assistant in this film. Of course, this comes from the pen of the 'great' Raju Bharatan, so the veracity of this claim is questionable. Can some knowledgeable HF emember clarify if the record credits this song to CR?

Here are songs from this album. All female songs are by the great one, Noor Jehan. I am not sure about the singer of the songs "Ab Raat" and "Kyon Mann". It sounds like Rafi Saab. May be someone can verify this. Thanks.

Now for the songs of "Lal Haveli" ...

I think those are solos by Surendra

I will wait for someone else to definitely confirm this. Thanks.

(Meena) Early Albums

I am missing several of Meenaji's early albums. If anyone of you have songs from the following albums, pleae share. Thanks.

Nai Roshni (1941) - Sardar Akhtar, Meena Kumari, Harish & Agha - Music: Anil Biswas

This film had a beautiful Zeenat Begum song Dard e Dil Dil Mein Basaya Jaaye Gaa....unfortunately I only have a low b/r of this song. I hope some one can upload the entire album.

The other Anil Biswas album you mention, Garib had a couple of Surendranath songs. Nothing to write home about.

Kind Regards

Dear SP,

I have been away from the forum for almost a fortnight, except for an occasional visit, when I could not resist the urge.

Today, I found time to read all the five pages.
You have created havoc, if I may say so, by setting the Ganges on fire, as it were.

It is an absolute riot of a thread concentrating on the films of two great ladies whom I greatly admire & another (Madhubala), who I simply, adore.

It requires enormous amount of courage combined with hard work to start another awesomely ambitious thread when the 'Muse & Music' is going great guns.

I am absolutely sure that your research would be meticulous and top-notch and you will pull it off in great style.

I doff my hat (imaginary, of course) in admiration for the choice of the topic.

With best wishes for the thread and looking forward to great times ahead,
Suresh

My Dear Suresh,

Thank you very much for such beautifully expressed thoughts. It is things like this that keep you motivated to push ahead and the results are, though painfully time consuming, in the end an experience in extreme excitement and endless joy.

Welcome back and cheers,

I read somewhere that Teri Yaad Aaye Sanwariya (or some other Noor Jehan song in Lal Haveli) was actually composed by C. Ramchandra, who was Mir Saheb's assistant in this film. Of course, this comes from the pen of the 'great' Raju Bharatan, so the veracity of this claim is questionable. Can some knowledgeable HF emember clarify if the record credits this song to CR?

Aditya

I had never heard of Raju Bharatan until seeing your reference to him here. Having googled the name I read some of his articles and the ire directed them. It made for a very diverting hour of fun - the man is a genuine loose cannon! And his writing is all over the place - he can't retain a thought for more than a sentence or two. Which leads me to believe there's great scope for many HF members to consider entering the profession of writing about the 'golden era' and doing a great job!

Faraaj bhai,

The problem with Mr. Raju Bharathan is that he is highly opinionated. In my view, he thinks he knows every thing and compounds it with the conviction that all of that is correct and hence, gospel truth. However, I think this is one of the pitfalls of professional critics. There are very few who wear their knowledge and authority, lightly.

Having said that, it must also be said that, he was, perhaps, IMHO, one of the first people who started to write about VHFM, in the popular press. This view, is, of course, subject to correction by better informed members, such as Aditya. And, even today, I have not come across any informed writing in the popular press about HFM in general & VHFM in particular, except cursory reviews of music discs. He has, certainly, cultivated the interest in VHFM in a lot of people; I am one among them. In the middle or the late eighties, Mr. Bharathan ran a very informative series of articles, in the form of a quiz, about VHFM, in the FILMFARE Magazine, whose editor at that time was one Mr. Pritish Nandy. Subsequently, Mr. Bharathan use to write a piece about Rafi, in an afternoon tabloid, MID - DAY.

As you very rightly said, he is loose cannon; love him, hate him but cannot ignore him. His writings are great entertainment, of course.

Best Regards,
Suresh

(Nargis) Taqdeer (1943)

Nargis turned barely 14 when she acted in this movie as the heroine aganist her wishes. She wanted to be a doctor like her father but her mother was grooming her to be an actress. When one of Indian cinema's greatest directors, Mehboob Khan came with the offer to act in his movie "Taqdeer", she couldn't pass it up. This movie became a huge hit and Nargis' taqdeer changed ever for good. Thanks to this movie, Indian moviegoers gained one of the greatest actresses of our times.

Agha Jani Kashmiri was associated with Mehboob Khan from the beginning of later's directorial career. He wrote many of the stories for Mehboob's movies and also penned their dialogues. Mehboob Saab appointed him as a diction and speaking coach to Nargis. Kashmiri Saab worked hard with Nargis preparing her for this movie and in the end after the movie was released and became a huge success, everybody was gratified with the results of their hard work.

Now for the songs from this movie where the sensational singing voice of Shamshad Begum is at the center stage with that great actor Motilal giving assist in some songs.

Nargis (1946) had music by Husnlal-Bhagatram with two good solos by Zohrabai Ambalewali. In fact, Aankhon Mein Aa is a beauty - you must've heard it. Both songs are CDQ 192kbps.

(Madhubala) Dulari (1949)

Here is a beautiful album from the great Naushad ji. His greatest achievement "Baiju Bawra" is another three years away but you can see the sweetness of his compositions with the simple instruments he uses in almost every song.

Then there is Rafi Saab's solo for ages, "Suhaani Raat Dhal Chuki". An absolute beauty. It reverberates in your heart for ever. The sweetness in the voice, the melancholy in the melody, the tenderness with it was delivered, the passion with which it was parlayed, it lingers in your heart for days and days ...

I am also including this song with a heartwarming tribute to Rafi Saab from Naushad ji that appeared in the "Legends: Mohd. Rafi - The Virtuoso (CD1)" album. It is close to 70 seconds long and it deeply touches your heart. I am also including Lata's rendering of the "Suhaani Raat" song from her "Shraddhanjali-3" album with few poignant remarks about Rafi Saab. Remember, there is no Lata's version in the actual movie. Finally, I am including the version sang by Sonu Nigam of the same song from his tribute to Rafi Saab album.

Because of the number of songs in this album, I will upload these in back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...

Yes, this is known among most music lovers. I am glad it didn't happen and the good senses prevailed. Imagine that! We would have been deprived of so many great songs he eventually composed for our listening pleasure as his everlasting legacy. Thanks for reminding us about it.

I'm not sure, but I think the singers for 2 songs are;

- Husn Kehta Ja Raha Hai - Shamshad & Ghulam Haider
- Jo Desh Kal Nahin Tha - Khan Mastana & Shamshad

(Madhubala) Mahal (1949)

The movie “Mahal” made history when it was released in 1949. It has set new standards in acting, music, cinematography, writing, singing, direction, and virtually every aspect of film making. We can explore some of them in a bit more detail below …

Kamaal Amrohi, who wrote the story of the movie, also directed it. It was his maiden directorial venture. It was a psychodrama with overtones of a ghost story that was unlike anything seen before on the screen. A critic noted that “Mahal” was among the earlier efforts to improve not only the content but also the form of Hindi Films. The film is known for its richly textured visuals, the imaginative use of sound, its tantalizing ambiguity and of course haunting music.

This was Madhubala’s second movie in an adult role (“Neel Kamal” was her first). She grew up to be a beautiful woman and the movie with its richly textured visuals showed her as the haunting spirit that not only occupies the mahal but also makes its occupant, the hero, helplessly succumb to the charm and to the inexplicable mystery surrounding her. Many critics felt that she literally stole the show from the veteran actor Ashok Kumar, who also was the producer of the movie.

The movie had one of hauntingly superb compositions created by Khemchand Prakash. The use of sounds and orchestration was many years ahead of rest of the competition. The great Naushad ji acknowledged publicly that Prakash ji was like his guru. One of the decisions Prakash ji made was to have Lata Mangeshkar, who was still trying to establish herself in the industry, to sing three songs. With the support from Ashok Kumar, in spite of the protests from the Bombay Talkies, he studio that was making this movie, he stuck to his guns. Her rendition of the song “Aayega Aanewaala” with its haunting melody was used through out the movie. This technique became a template for future movies such as “Madhumati”, “Bees Saal Baad”, “Woh Kaun Thi” and “Mere Saaya”. The song was recorded by placing a mike in the center of a huge hall with Lata ji standing in one corner and starts to sing the preamble (or prelude) while slowly approaching towards the mike. An unsatisfied Prakash ji had Lata do this little over 100 times before he was satisfied with the end result.

Khemchand Praksh ji was not only responsible for giving Lata the push she was looking for but also was the music director who introduced Kishore Kumar as a singer in “Ziddi (1948)”. Unfortunately, Prakash ji didn’t live long enough to reap the benefits of his success of “Mahal”. After completing his assignment for “Jaan Pehchaan (1950)” he passed away because of bad health. He was only 42.

For Lata ji, 1949 was a banner year. Apart from “Mahal”, she also enjoyed unprecedented successes with “Andaaz”, “Dulari” and “Barsaat”. She virtually wiped out rest of the competition after such a phenomenally successful string of movies. Only two persons could hold their own ground against such onslaught, Geeta Roy and Shamshad Begum.

Rajkumari also had three solos and a duet in the movie. She started as a singer actress but her weight problems made her to stick to singing only. She was one of the most sought after singers of her time who demanded heavy price to sing. The song “Ghabraake” from this movie is one of her greatest triumphs.

The movie editor was Bimal Roy, who later became an independent producer and director and made some great motion pictures. Working on “Mahal”, Roy must have gotten ideas on how to present his “Madhumati” on the screen. The opening scenes in both the movies, the haunting music, and other ideas all were inspired by this movie.

The film was brilliantly photographed by Josef Wersching who was the chief cameraman of the Bombay Talkies. He was largely inspired by the German expressionistic films that were made in 1920s. Not only the light and shades that were used but focus on the images of Madhubala pacing through the old Mahal also helped create the spookiness the story called for.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts ...

(Nargis) Aag (1948)

Young Raj Kapoor’s burning desire was to make his own movies. Unsatisfied with few movies he worked for, he launched his first production in early 1947, aptly titled “Aag”. He sold everything he owned to raise money. He even borrowed some from his servant who used to work at his home. Besides acting in it he co-wrote the story, wrote its screenplay, and also directed it.

The story dealt with a complex emotional triangle and comprised of three leading ladies; Nargis, Kamini Kaushal, and Nigar Sultana. The movie was restrained by smallness of its scale. Sets were modest. But camera was used chiefly for high-contrast lighting that proved to be brilliant for the movie.

Raj also introduced his wife’s brother, Prem Nath in the movie in a pivotal role. His younger brother Shashi played young Raj. His father recommended to sign Shankar & Jaikishan as music directors but Raj already signed Ram Ganguly. Both Shankar & Jaikishan as well as Dattaram were assistants to Ganguly in this movie.

During its production, India became independent from the British rule, and Raj was able to complete the movie within a year, by eartly 1948. The movie was ready for screening, but Raj couldn’t find any distributors to release his film. Undeterred Raj went ahead and released the movie himself. The movie was a commercial failure. However, Raj’s charged story treatment, its fine shot compositions and deft handling of the camera movements, and the beautiful music had secured many rarified reviews.

The movie may not have worked but Raj has arrived. He recruited a youthful team. He established his own R.K. Films banner. The movie world took notice that the fiery Raj who had shown flashes of brilliance with his “Aag” is about to set the world on fire with several socially conscientious movies in years to come.

I am uploading the songs in two back-to-back posts. Most of these are from a CD. However, some were contributed by the members of this Forum. Thank you. Now for the first set of songs ...

(Nargis) Anokha Pyar (1948)

Songs from this album by Anil Biswas ji are a beauty. Another highlight of this album is there are many several versions of the same song. I'm not sure whether all these songs were actually in the movie or not. But they offer different and a beautiful perspective of the same song.

Almost all these songs, except four, are due to the HF member vdsachin ji. Thank you Sachin ji. Here are the songs ...

In the film, Meena Kapoor sang for Nargis and Lata Mangeshkar for Nalini Jayawant. When it was time to record for 78rpm records, Meena Kapoor was apparently unwell, so Lata Mangeshkar recorded all her songs for the records. The only exception was the Lata-Meena Kapoor duet, which became Lata-Ira Nagrath duet for the records.

Meena Kapoor has clearly beaten Lata in this song.

Mahesh, I respectfully disagree with your assessment of Lata vs Meena Kapoor. Lat could outsing Meena and almost anyone in the film or non-film world (Classical) in the "Golden Age." And that is true of this song too.

Posted by: maheshks Sep 3 2009, 04:57 AM

Lata has sung this song just as a singer having classical abilities.
Meena Kapoor has sung it from inner heart with pathos.

SP,

This movie was released by one more name, Shri Krishna Vivah.
Some time ago, I had read some discussion about the identity of singers from this album (Shri Ganesh Mahima). The general feeling is that the song 'taaron ke palne mein' has been wrongly credited to Geeta Dutt. The singer could be Sulochana Kadam or some one else. Some of the possible names suggested for 'Surya deva dinesh' song were Chitragupta and S. N. Tripathi.

There should not be any doubt. It is Meena Kapoor. If she has forgotten
that she had ever worked with S N Tripathi or Chitragupt, it could
be a case of fading memory in old age. Were not there some more
answers like this from her which were also not true?

(Nargis) Andaz (1949)

Here is a classic that never gets dated. Probably that is why it is a classic. This was definitely one of the great movies of Mehboob Khan. If his other great classic “Mother India” dealt with rustic India, this movie dealt with urban India and the influence of western culture on it. Both movies starred one of our greatest actresses, Nargis. She probably owes to Mehboob more than anyone else for bringing out the best in her.

Nargis was hardly 19 years old when “Andaz” was made. She was already an established actress. But this was the first movie in which her acting abilities were really challenged. The role that has many shades of complexity and demanded consummate histrionics. She rose to the occasion magnificently. She brings out the carefree tomboyish nature of a growing woman with much glee and élan. She puts forth forcibly the role of a responsible business woman with ever so ease. She exemplifies as an adoring wife with romantic abandon. She gives intensity to her performance to show moral conflict of a person caught between the love of two men which shows bleeding wounds of suffering. This is the movie Nargis announced to the world that she has arrived.

After casting Nargis, Mehboob Khan asked her whom does she want to play her husband in the movie, Dilip or Raj. She chose Raj. Each of the male leads did a great job in such contrasting roles. It was restraint in acting of Dilip versus the deliberate overplay of Raj. It was fun to watch these two great performers for the first and the last time together in the same movie.

The movie has some great music by Naushad ji. Like in most of his early movies, Naushadji was just brilliant. Every song was a super hit. Interestingly all songs by Mukesh were picturized on Dilip and Rafi for Raj. Incidentally, the previous year, in “Mela (1948)”, Naushad used the voice of Mukesh for Dilip. Those songs were also huge hits.

This was a banner year for Lata. Every song in this movie was a huge hit. But this didn’t come easy. While recording these songs Naushadji felt that Lata lacked proper Urdu diction. Lataji’s mother tongue being Marathi, this was not unusual. Naushadji spent many hours coaching Lata how to speak Urdu and how to sing some of these songs. This becomes very evident when Lata sings the song “Uthaaye Jaa Unke Sitam” in this movie. Lata also had another magnificent movie this same year in Raj Kapoor’s memorable musical “Barsaat”. That solidified her position in the industry as a singer par excellence and in the coming years a promise of force to reckon with.

Because of the number of songs I will upload these in two back-to-back posts. I am also including a couple of unreleased songs that were recently contributed by the fellow Forum member, kadri420. Many thanks to Kadriji.

Now for the first set of songs …

(Nargis) Barsaat (1949)

Following write up was included when I uploaded these songs earlier in my “Raj Kapoor” thread. I went back to visit this and found it is still very appropriate. I am including most of that write up here …

Raj Kapoor was just 25 year old when he made “Barsaat (1949)”. His first directorial venture, “Aag (1948)”, even though was not a financial success, established him as someone to whom people will be looking forward to in future movies for the style and showmanship that movie showed glimpses of. Raj didn’t disappoint his fans and critics.

“Barsaat” in more ways than one was trailblazing. It introduced a new actress to the Hindi screen, Nimmi. It was shot mostly outdoors in Kashmir and its surrounding places. It introduced a pair of music directors, Shankar & Jaikishan. It introduced a pair of lyricists, Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri. It catapulted Lata Mangeshkar, who sang 10 out of 11 songs (both solos and duets) in the movie that enabled her to compete for the number one female playback singer position with Geeta Roy who was the reigining singing nightingale at that time. It consolidated Nargis & Raj Kapoor as the hottest romantic pair of the Indian screen.

The music director Shankar had passion for tabla. Though he learnt fundamentals from known ustads of that time, it was through tireless practice and undeterred determination he was able to master fundamentals of good music. Jaikishan on the other hand loved playing harmonium. Shankar and Jaikishan met at a musical gathering and formed a strong bond of friendship even though Shankar was 10 years senior to Jaikishan. At that time Shankar was working for Prithvi Theater doing odd jobs including acting. He introduced Jaikishan to Prithviraj and was hired to work together with Shankar. They later worked as assistants to the music director duo Husnlal & Bhagatram. When Raj Kapoor was contemplating to make “Aag”, Prithviraj recommended to Raj to hire Shankar & Jaikishan for his picture. But Raj already signed Ram Ganguly to provide the music. Shankar & Jaikishan along with Dattaram assisted Ganguly in music for “Aag”. When the time came to film “Barsaat”, Raj decided to offer the music direction duties to Shankar & Jaikishan. That is how the famous music team of Shankar & Jaikishan was born.

Hasrat Jaipuri was working as a bus conductor in Bombay while writing poetry in his spare time, as poetry was his passion. Prithviraj heard Hasrat recite some of his poems in a mushaira. Impressed, he introduced him to Raj who was launching “Barsaat”. His first recording was the song “Jiya Beqaraar Hai” the music for which was composed by Shankar. Jaikishan composed his second song, a duet, “Chhod Gaye Baalam”. Shailendra was a railway clerk in Bombay. Raj Kapoor first saw him in a public meeting where Shailendra was reciting his poems. Raj offered work for him on “Aag”. But Shailendra refused thinking he will not have creative freedom. But in a year things changed. Shailendra needed money and decided to approach Raj. Raj hired him to write songs for “Barsaat” along with Hasrat Jaipuri. He wrote two songs for the film; “Patli Kamar Hai” and the title song “Barsaat Mein”. This was the birth of the famous lyricist team of Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri.

The team of Shankar, Jaikishan, Hasrat Jaipuri, and Shailendra that came together to contribute their respective skills for “Barsaat” went on to make magnificent musical history by churning out one hit after another. The youthful exuberance and the effervescent blend of melody they brought to “Barsaat” continued to pervade their creations for nearly 30 years. A magnificent achievement by any standards!

There are 11 songs in this movie. Each one of them was a super hit. Except for a solo by Rafi Saab, all other songs were done by Lata ji that includes two duets with Mukesh. I am also uploading extended versions of three songs. These are by the courtesy of the Forum membership. Lata had couple of CDs that were recorded during some of her live performances. I am including “Barsaat Mein” from this album. This isn’t much different from the original song except you can hear the crowd applauding in the beginning and in the end. I am also including another version of “Jiya Beqaraar Hai” with Manoj Kumar’s introduction in praise of Raj. This is from the “Legends: Raj Kapoor - The Showman (CD1)” album.

Now for details of songs from “Barsaat” and the songs themselves …

Songs of "Barsaat (1949)" Continued ...

I am including here three extended versions of the original songs. These are all by the courtesy of the Forum members. Thank you. I am also including "Barsaat Mein Hum Se Mile Tum" a live version of Lata. The song is the same as the orginal one uploaded in my Post 1 except here you can hear audience cheering before the song starts and at the end of the song. Also included is the song "Jiya Beqaraar Hai" with Manoj Kumar's introduction where he pays glowing tributes to Raj. This is about 28 seconds and it is followed by the actual song. This tribute and the song is from the "Legends: Raj Kapoor - The Showman (CD1)" album.

Here are these songs ...

(Madhubala) Nirala (1950)

Here is a fine album by C. Ramchandra. Almost through late 50's and even into early 60's Chitalkar was phenomenally successful in composing hit songs. This album also has some nice songs. Most of these songs are by the courtesy of the Forum mebers. Others came from a DVD. It appears that I am missing one song shown in red italics in the table below. If this is the case, and if you happen to have it, pleas kindly share with us.

Quality of some of the songs is really poor. Especially the song "Dil Mein Kisi Ke" has not only some skips but its sound quality is also very poor. I am including here to ensure that the uplaod is almost complete. Anyways, here are the songs ...

Thank you very much Faraaj for putting so much confidence in me. I am plain flattered. I am not really shy to speak my mind as you may have noticed in my write ups. You can share your mind only if it comes from your heart. Language is only an instrument but a beautiful one when one can express their feelings effectively within the realm of the subject and personal experiences. A personal touch always gives a lasting impression, whether you agree with the thoughts and philosophies behind those expressed opinions or not.

That said, Faraaj, I believe there is no harm done when someone comes forward to help even if it is unsolicited.

Again many thanks for expressing such confidence in me.

Cheers,

(Meena) Madhosh (1951)

Here is one of the early albums of the incomparable Madan Mohan. It probably was his second album. Lata Mangeshkar dominates this album with six solos out of nine songs. This is how the great partnership of Lataji and Madan Mohan Saab, Lataji used to call him "Madan Bhayya", started. It has led to some of the greatest compositions of Mohanji and some of the sweetest songs of Lataji that probably will be perennially remembered for their heart rendering melodies.

There is a song in this album by a singer named Chand and I don't believe I have heard too much of. This probably is the only one. Talat Saab has a great song, a ghazal, "Meri Yaad Mein", sung in his inimitable style with that silken voice he was famous for.

Here are all of the songs from this beautiful album ...

To the best of my knowledge Aziz Kashmiri was a lyricist. The MD for Sun Lo Sajan was Shyam Sunder, like other songs in the film. In fact the same tune was repeated by him a year later in the film Dholak in the Lata-Rafi duet - Aise Rasiya Ka Kya Aitbaar. Coincidentally, Aziz Kashmiri was the lyricist of the that song as well.

Of course, all the above is subject to correction. If at all, some 'Aziz' was the MD of these 2 songs, it would be Aziz Khan/ Aziz Hindi. Can someone with HFGK please confirm this?

BTW, the two remaining missing songs are:

- Hum Ne Circus Mein Naukri Kar Li - G. M Durrani
- Hum Jahan Mein Aaye Hai Aansoo Bahane - Karan Dewan

The male voice is probably S. D Batish. I think we had some discussion on HF about this where someone pointed out the Vishwas Nerurkar's book on Madan Mohan says he never worked with S D Batish, but all CDs, etc credit this song to him.

Also, Madan Mohan's site credits the Dhak Dhak song to Miss Chand (???)

Ok. She is Chand Bala (Mrs. Chand Agarwal). Her voice can be listened in the songs:

1. Mere dard e jigar ki har dhadkan manzil ka pataa batalaati hai...nausherwan e adil and
2. Bhaagvaan jaraa dheere bol, kya main ooncha bol rahaa hoon...sharda

The male voice is neither Durrani nor S.D. Batish. The singer is pretty old at the
time when he sang this song. Batish had a very crisp and sharp voice during that
time and was relatively much younger. Nerurkar is not correct in his book when
he says that Madan Mohan never worked with S. D. Batish. In the movie Ada (1951)
composed by Madan Mohan, the song ...sab kuchh karna par mat karna pyar..is sung
by S.D. Batish and Asha Bhosle.

Maheshji, thanks for elaborating on this and making things straight. Cheers. -S

I am skeptical about "chand" being the singer of song no.2.Nor is the male voice in the last song of G.M. Durrani.

Aditya

I'm sorry I got all mixed up between G. M Durrani and S. D Batish. The CD I have (Shanshad Begum Golden Collection) credits this song to G . M Durrani. S Mahesh had earlier pointed out on another post that as per VN's book Madan Mohan never worked with G. M Durrani. And Madan Mohan's website credits this song to S D Batish.

So the question remains, who is the male singer in this song?

Thanks and regards
Aditya

(Meena) Lal Haveli (1944)

Here are songs from this album. All female songs are by the great one, Noor Jehan. I am not sure about the singer of the songs "Ab Raat" and "Kyon Mann". It sounds like Rafi Saab. May be someone can verify this. Thanks.

Now for the songs of "Lal Haveli" ...

I don't have a single song from this Meena Kumari-starrer. Per EarthNet the following are some of the songs in the movie. If anyone of you have them or others from this movie, please share. Thanks.

SP,

I don't have the complete song listing for this movie. However, I found out from a post by S Mahesh that following two songs were composed by Sajjad Hussain.

1 tumhe baaghon mein sawan ke nazare yaad karte hain- Shamshad Begum
2 toot gaya, haaye toot gaya, woh saje mohabbat toot gaya-Rajkumari, Mohammad Rafi, Shamshad Begum (3:35 \ 128)

Rest were composed by Bulo C. Rani and Ram Panjwani.

Here is one of Sajjad Hussain's compositions.

(Madhubala) Nishana (1950)

Khwaja (Khawaja) Khursheed Anwar (see the picture shown), a brilliant and legendary music director of his generation was in the music industry for 43 years. Yet he composed music for only 29 films; 12 in India, and after migrating to Pakistan 17. Born into a rich family, he went on to acquire a Masters in philosophy in education. But his passion for music was irresistible. So he decided to forego a bright civil service carrier and instead sought fortunes in the area of music.

He took lessons from eminent Ustads and became familiar with intricacies of classical music. With the credentials he sported, he had no difficulty in landing a job with All India Radio. No sooner than he started working there he was offered to work as a music director for the film “Kurmai” by A.R. Kardar in 1941.

But not until he decided to migrate to Pakistan in 1952 his significant contributions to music began in earnest. Because of his classical training, his songs were usually rich in melody and pure in ragas. His musical emphasis was on heightening the impact of emotions expressed in lyrics.

In collaboration with EMI of Pakistan, he recorded an unique collection of classical performances. This compilation, called “Raag Mala”, had a short introduction before the music demonstrating his command over classical ragas.

He provided music for great Saigal’s last movie “Parwana (1947)”. It was the film “Intezar” in Pakistan, that gave a new lease of life to Madam Noor Jehan. He also was a writer and director.

Anwar Saab had the distinction of working with many legendary names. He was a close friend of Faiz Ahmad Faiz. He worked with all of the big names from India as well as Pakistan.

Here are the songs for which Anwar Saab has provided the music for. Unfortunately the quality of these songs is not uniform. These were a gift from a friend. My many thanks to her. Most of the songs have adequate quality except for the song "Koi Kisi Se Dil Na Lagaana" by Shamshad Begum. This sounds, at least in the beginning, really awful.

Now for the songs ...

(Madhubala) Pardes (1950)

Here is one of my favorite albums of Ghulam Mohammed Saab. This one boasts several beautiful songs. It has one of my favorite solo of Shamshadji, "Mere Ghungharwaale Baal". It is so sensational that you feel like swinging to the tune the way Shamshadji sings with such gay abandon. Then there is an utterly delightful duet of Lata and Rafi Saab, "Ankhiyan Mila Ke". This song was composed with so much zest that you are envigorated with its melody. The song contrasts Lata's melosonically sweet young voice to that of the deep vocals of Rafi Saab that has a touch of strong inflection and a distinctive and decisive tinge in the style of singing. Lata also has another five beautiful solos. Ghulam Mohammed Saab was such a great composer and you wonder why he never got his due. It is a pity.

The album has nine songs. I am uploading seven of them here. The two missing songs are shown in red italics in the table below. I am requesting members to share these songs if they can. Thank you.

Great upload Swarapriya. One often wonders about the extremely talented lot, the mainstream success and its elusiveness. Such musings take on subtle shades of mood and meaning. They are at times perhaps a bit like melodious random notes on a harmonica. Like sunlight sifting through trees on the face of a sleepy traveller on the train. The fleeting twinge of sadness for some may be a tranquil yet surreal personal moment for others.

Thank you. There is so much beauty buried in the expressions of your lovely and beautiful thoughts. These are the types of things that I helplessly and sometimes hopelessly fell in love with. I feel like that sleepy traveller on the train except in this case the sunlight is occasionally sifting through on my face as well. What a great feeling. I feel that tranquility to be a personal surreal moment for myself ...

Love it.

(Meena) Aladdin Aur Jadui Chirag (1952)
Also Known As "Aladdin And The Wonderful Lamp"

This story was made into a movie so many times, it seems like in almost all languages of the world. In Hindi alone it was made a few times. There is a question whether the music for this movie was composed by either Tripathi and Chitragupt together or Tripathi alone. Many references I have seen seems to suggest that it was by both of them.

Chitragupt also sang a couple of songs in this movie. Interestingly, Chitragupt gave music to another movie of the same title (the title of the Hindi movie was in English) made 20 years later in 1972.

This story was made into a movie in Telugu as well in 1957. I will upload its songs in this section after uploading the Hindi songs.

Here are the songs of the Hindi version ...

Here are the time durations of other extended version (some barely) songs I have: Baalamwa - 2:50; Mil Milke - 2:52; Rootha Hua - 2:39; Ujdi Re - 2:59; and Yeh Zindagi - 3:08. I felt these songs had lot of static noise and decided not to upload them.

(Meena) Baiju Bawra (1952)

Baiju Bawra's music was a milestone in the film industry. It may be the most magnificent music ever composed for a film. In every song there is genius of Naushadji. In every word there is richness of lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni Saab. And there is Rafi Saab's most magnificent voice elevated to a stage that nobody ever heard before or since then. The music that takes you on a journey to worlds never seen before; sweet, melodious, and heart warming.

“Baiju Bawra” was produced and directed by Vijay Bhatt. The critic S.M.M. Ausaja describes Bhatt’s illustrious life and times as “a man’s kaleidoscopic journey towards achieving his creative nirvana”. That just about aptly describes in one simple statement this magnificent achievement that is “Baiju Bara”. Coming from humble beginnings, Vijay Bhatt he and his older brother Shankarbhai Bhatt, moved to Bombay seeking theater related work. Subsequently they ended up writing screenplays for movies. Soon after this they decided to establish their own studios. They called it “Prakash Studios” and started making movies under the banner “Prakash Pictures”.

The first movie they released in 1934 was called “Actress”. This was a huge success. Then they started making movies in both Hindi and Gujarati. Some of the movies they made were “Bombay Mail (1935)”, “Challenge (1936)”, “His Highness (1937)”, “State Express (1938)”, and “Bijli (1939)”. They launched a new hero, Zakaria Khan, who was working as a police officer at that time, renamed him Jayant (father of that great actor Amjad Khan of “Sholay (1975)” fame), in “Bombay Mail”. Jayant also starred in all subsequent movies of Prakash Pictures through 1939. Almost all these movies were financially successful.

Vijay Bhatt brought in Babubhai Mistry, a poster painter, to do trick shots for one of his movies called “Dreamland (1936)”. He made “Leatherface” in 1939 and introduced a child artiste named Mehajabeen. The child artiste grew up to be the great actress Meena Kumari.

When Bhatt visited Mahatma Gandhi at his ashram, Mahatma suggested that Bhatt make a movie on the Gujarati saint and poet Narsi Mehta. As a result he made “Narsi Bhagat” in 1940 both in Gujarati as well as Hindi. The movie became a huge hit. Buoyed by the success of “Narsi Bhagat” Bhatt turned attention to Hindu epics. He made several movies on Rama. These include “Bharat Milap (1942)”, “Ram Rajya (1943)” “Rambaan (1948)”, and “Bal Ramayan (1956)”. “Ram Rajya” is the only movie Mahatma Gandhi ever saw in his life!

He also made historical or semi-historical dramas such as “Vikramaditya (1945)”, “Baiju Bawra (1952)”, “Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1954)”, and “Angulimala (1960)”.

Bhatt also gave a major break to Naushadji. Naushadji’s debut film “Prem Nagar (1940)” was not a success. He was looking for a break when he met Vijay Bhatt. Bhatt signed him for his movie “Mala (1941)” as the music director. Subsequently he also scored music for three other Bhatt’s movies; “Dushman (1941)”, “Station Master (1942)”, and “Baiju Bawra (1952)”.

Bhatt originally planned to have Nargis and Dilip Kumar to play the lead roles in “Baiju Bawra”. But both actors were so busy that they couldn’t accommodate dates for Bhatt. Meena Kumari, whom Bhatt introduced as a child star in “Leatherface” was making mostly B-grade movies such as costume dramas or mythological movies until “Baiju”. He decided to rope in Meenaji to play the lead and signed Bharat Bhushan to play the male lead opposite her.

Bhatt was also instrumental in giving a boost to the careers of Rajendra Kumar (“Goonj Uthi Shehnnai”) and Manoj Kumar (“Hariyali Aur Rasta”).

Vijay Bhatt was active making movies for a long time. His last directorial venture was “Heera Aur Patthar” made in 1977. He was 86 when he passed away in 1993.

Naushad was already an established and a well known music director by the time he was signed to provide music for “Baiju Bawra”. He already gave music to some 30+ movies by that time. Most of these movies boasted several popular songs that are remembered even today. In his lifetime Naushadji gave music to 74 movies. By the time he was signed up to provide music for “Baiju” he already had 43% of his career work completed. “Baiju Bawra” turned out to be his monumental achievement. He garnered Filmfare’s Best Music Director award for his work. It turns out that this was the only movie for which he got this award. Naushadji was a recipient of Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke Awards.

Shakeel Badayuni was a romantic lyricist at heart. When he was introduced to Naushadji in mid-1940’s he signed Shakeel Saab to write lyrics for his next movie, “Dard (1947)”. The songs of the movie became a huge success and Badayuni Saab arrived. In his lifetime, he wrote songs for about 60 plus movies, most of them for Naushadji. He received Filmfare award as the Best Lyricist three years in a row, in 1961 for “Chaudhvin Ka Chand”, in 1962 for “Gharana”, and in 1963 for “Bees Saal Baad”.

Ustad Amir Khan who sang several beautiful classical songs in the movie acted as an advisor for Naushadji. Ustad was born in a family of musicians but as he grew older developed his own singing style. He had many disciples during his lifetime and was a recipient of Padma Bhushan and the Sangeet Natak Academy Awards.

Pandit D.V. Paluskar (known to his close friends as Bapurao), who was part of the jugalbandi with Ustad Amir Khan in “Baiju Bawra”, was a Hindustani classical vocalist and a bhajan singer. Considered a child prodigy, Paluskar passed away at the very young age of 34.

Meena Kumari turned her career around with “Baiju”. She received the Best Actress award from Filmfare for her role in the movie. She repeated this very next year with her performance in Bimal Roy’s “Parineeta”. She won the award twice more, one for the role of Chhoti Bahu in Guru Dutt’s “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam” and later on for “Kaajal”. After “Baiju” there was no turning back for Meenaji. One after another she portrayed some magnificent roles and established herself as the queen of tragedy. Marred with personal life tragedies, she passed away at the young age of 39.

Bharat Bhushan struggled early as an actor but as “Baiju” established himself as someone worth noticing. Even though he did manage to make an occasional good movie, such as “Basant Bahar” and “Mirza Ghalib”, Bhushan was never able to achieve the heights he scaled with “Baiju”.

It is the culmination of so many talented people that created this musical extravaganza called “Baiju Bawra” …

I will upload songs of "Baiju Bawra" in back-to-back four separate posts immediately following this post ...

Songs of Baiju Bawra (1952) - Post 3

Here is the third set of songs from this melodious album. Thumbnail pictures of each song were from the pictures originally uploaded by our fellow member Saki. Thank you very much Saki.

Here are a couple of pointers about the origin of these songs. All these are from a DVD. Their quality is passable except for "Ghanan Ghana". The quality of that song is poor through a minute but gets better afterwards. I may have gotten "Tu Ganga Ki Mauj" part 2 and 3 from the members of this Forum. Thank you.

Here are a couple of pointers about the origin of these songs. Extended version of the song "Aaj Gawat" is from a DVD. I am also including here an extended version of the song "Mann Tarpat" from the album "Golden Collection-Classical Hits" CD album. The live version of "Bachpan Ki Mohabbat" is from the CD album "Lata Live in 1981 - Vol. 1". Finally, the extended version of the song "O Duniya Ke Rakhwaale" is from the CD album "The Last Journey of Mohammed Rafi".

Thank you.

(Madhubala) Badal (1951)

Here is a swashbuckler where a beautiful Madhubala and the dashing Premnath (who is playing a Robinhood type of role, "Badal" is his name in the movie - he still has lots of hair), are in love. It has some beautiful music by Shankar & Jaikishan, this being one of their very very early albums. I will upload the songs in back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...
