Gulshan Bawra, the writer of popular Hindi film songs like "Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi" (Zanjeer) and "Mere desh ki dharti" passed away at his Pali Hill residence in Mumbai on Friday. He was 72.

Monica Khanna, a neighbour of Bawra said, "He died of a heart failure. He had not been keeping well for over two months. His wish was to donate his body, so we will be fulfilling his wish and taking him to J J Hospital in the afternoon."

Bawra has to his credit about 240 songs in 42 years of his career. Almost half of his songs have been composed by R D Burman. His last hit was "Le pappiyaan jhappiyaan paale hum" for "Haqeeqat" (1995), which landed him in his only controversy — of writing a vulgar song. Some of the other songs written by Bawra are "Sanam teri kasam", "Agar tum naa hote", "Aati rahengi baharein", and "Jivan ke har mod pe mil jayenge humsafar".

The lyricist got a Filmfare award for "Yaari hai imaan".

Bawra was born in Sheikhupura, Pakistan. His family was a victim of the partition riots during which a young Gulshan saw his parents being killed in front of his eyes.
