Friends...

It takes great pleasure for me to upload to music lovers, the rare audio interview of Shankar ji, in Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, with Tabassum ( courtsey a close friend who is in the USA, now ). This interview shows in details what kind of personalities SJ were and what went behind to create the magnificient music in Hindi Cinema. With this interview I guess many discussions ( basically difference of opinions within fans of SJ ) would get a right direction.



One more interview I am uploading on the ocassion of Shailendra ji's birthday, yesterday ( courtsey one unknown friend, email id was omnamahshivay ). This was done on Awaaz FM in Dubai and Shailendra ji's daughter and son were live on radio. This also gives us lot of insights about Shailendra as a person....
The evening of yesterday, after this interview was one of the most memorable....many eminent personalities discussed about the life and times of Shailendra ji till the wee hours of today morning !!! one really needs such musical environment to breathe....life becomes so beautiful !!

Shankar Shailendra jo baad mein sirf Shailendra ke naam se jaane
gaye, pehechaane gaye aur apne khayaalon, zindegi ke tajurbaat ko
amar geeton ka roop dekar zamaane bhar ke taraf se maane gaye, ek
aise shaayar ek aise kavi ki haisiyat rakhte hain jinki shaayari ke
mazboot kandhon par 'Bollywood' ke sangeet ki imaarat aaj tak khaDi
hai. "barsaat mein ham mile tum" se lekar "jeena yahaan marna
yahaan" tak Bollywood ko 17 saalon mein jo amar gaane Shailendra
saahab ne deeye woh itne kam arse mein shaayad hi kisi ne deeye hon.

Q: achchha, Shailendra saahab ka aaj janamdin. unke baare mein bahut
baaten hoti hain aur 'media' par unke likhe geet 'play' bhi keeye
jaate hain, unke baare mein guftagun bhi hoti hai lekin chunki aap
unki beTi hain, beTe hain, unke parivaar ka hissa hain, main
chaahoonga ki 104.4 Awaaz par aaj kuchh baaten hon Shailendra saahab
aur aapke shakhsiyat ke hawaale se, aapke rishton ke hawaale se ke
kaun si yaaden hain, kaun si baaten hain jo aapki zahan mein jab bhi
aati hain to aapka sar fakr se buland ho jaata hai.

AM: sabse pehle to ham yeh kehnaa chaahenge ki itne saalon se baba
guzre hain, aaj ka din aur 14th December, jis din guzre the, kabhi
ek Khushi ka din sochke hamne naheen manaaya, lekin aaj 'thanks to
104.4 Awaaz, thanks to Lajo Gupta, it has honestly become such a
joyous day for me that' aaj ham baiThke baba ko yaad kar rahe
hain 'and in a very very happy and nice way and I really appreciate
that, thank you!'


Q: achha kuchh aisi baaten Amla-ji aur Manoj-ji, jo bahut kam logon
ko maaloom ho, kyun ki dekhiye aap log to unke ghar mein us zamaane
mein to kaafi chhoTe chhoTe honge, lekin bachpan ki jo yaaden hoti
hain woh zindegi ke saath saath aage hi aage chalte rehti hai. un
yaadon ko 'share' keejiye aaj hamaare sunnewaalon ke saath aur yeh
bhi bataaiyega ki har saal aap har saal Shailendra saahab ka
janamdin kis tarah manaate hain aur aaj to Khaas shaam bhi hai unke
naam.

MS: har saal, pehle to ham baba ko yaad karte hain, kuchh pooja
paaTh karte hain unke naam se, usse behad Khushi hoti hai aur aisa
lagta hai ki baba phir hamaare saath hain, aur is tarah itne saal
beet gaye hain aur har saal ek nayi Khushi milti hain hamein aaj,
Khaaskar hamein, aur jaisa Amla ne kahaa kuchh der pehle ki 'I thank
this 104.4' kyunki hamaare ko to koi ummeed naheen thi ki ham Dubai
mein honge aur yahaan is 'radio station' mein aap logon se baat
karenge..

Q: aap bhi yakeen keejiye mujhe bhi ummeed naheen thi, bachpan se
yaheen gaane sun sun ke baDaa huya hoon, "barsaat mein hamse mile
tum", "awaara hoon" ya "sajan re jhooTh mat bolo" aur mere liye yeh
bahut Khushi ki baat hai ki main Shailendra saahab jaise mahaan
kalaakaar ke parivaar se is waqt baat-chit kar raha hoon.

Q: achchha Amlaji, main abhi dekh raha tha ki aap kuchh bataa raheen
theen aur aapki aankhon mein aansoo chhalak aaye the, kuchh Khushi
ke aansoo the, kuchh yaadon ke aansoo the, aap kuchh apni
yaaden 'share' kar raheen theen hamaare saath

AM: jee ham yeh bataa rahe the ki ham bahut chhoTe the jab baba
guzar gaye aur achanak ek, jaise 'overnight' ek 'void' sa, ek
Khaalipan saa jaise chhaa gaya tha hamaare zindegi ke upar. baba ke
guzar jaane ke baad 'we were determined that not to let that void
eat us up' aur 'I think, I think it was also in a way we realised
that baba never left us. 'Through his songs' unke gaano ke zariye
unhone hamein ek raah dikhaaee aur us raah par chalte ham aaj yahaan
tak pahunch gaye hain aur ham bahut hi 'proud' hoke, bahut hi fakr

chhoTe the jab baba guzar gaye, 'after' 14th December 1966 pitaaji
ke guzar jaane ke baad, achaanak 'we were forced into a world, the
real world' aur 'we had grow up overnight, there was no youth',

MS: bilkul! par 'at the same time' is tarah ki 'frustation, it
didn't set into', khaas kar ham apni baat kar rahe hain, 'it didn't
set into my mind', jaise Amla ne kaha ki kuchh gaane aise the
ki 'you listen to them and they would inspire you and change and
make the things differently'. inmein se ek gaana yeh tha "bahut diya
hai denewaale ne tujhko, aanchal hi na samaaye to kya keejiye"

Q: waah!

MS: 'I mean there were songs like this which pulled me out from
situations, from depression type of things and there were songs
which really cheered, it helped us to overcome certain void in our
life which had come about after baba's passing by'.

Q: achchha baba ki jo zindegi hai, jahaan tak meri maaloomaat ka
taalukh hai 'electrical & mechanical engineering' mein 'diploma'
kiya unhone, iske baad 'Indian Railways' mein kaam shuru kiya. baDi
kaTheen zindegi guzaari unhone, tareeke azaadi ki wajah se kuchh
mazaalen bhi unhone sahe, to unki zindegi jo hai kis tarah aapki
zindegi par asar-andaaz huyi? kis tarah aapne apne apne jeevan ko
aage baDhaaya? Manoj saahab ne to thoDaa bahut zikr kar diya, Amla-
ji main chaahta hoon ki aap iska jawaab den.

AM: 'This I had to say, baba came from a very very humble
background, very humble background', yahaan tak ki baba
jab 'Railway' mein the 'he was only an apprentice, it was not even a
full-fledged job and' shaadi karke mummy aayeen aur mummy 'came from
a better background, theirs was a love marriage, mummy came from a
better background, mummy came with clothes and jewellery which was
the norm of the day', baba ne mummy se kaha ki 'dekho tum yeh sab
pahankar hamaare saath chalogi to 'it would look very odd', yeh sab
abhi chhoD do, jab ham is laayak ho jaayenge ki ham tumhe yeh kapDe
yeh zevar pehna sake ham Khud tumhe pehenaayenge' aur aise bhi din
aaye ki 'she didn't have to look back, he had far out-stepped or
gone beyond even her background' lekin 'we grew up' ham jis maahaul
mein paidaa huye, jis ghar mein baDe huye, us ghar mein hamne 'we
didn't see need, we didn't see poverty, we didn't see want of any
kind but' hamaare ghar mein aisa tha ki 'baba was so firm, he was
the kindest sould ever but he was so firm that the children will not
forget that we are humble, we come from a normal background, we are
normal human beings.


Q: achchha yeh baba ki tabeeyat thi ki aapne jo baat kee thi ki
mummy 'jewellery' lekar aayeen, saamaan lekar aayeen, aur baba ke
kehne par zindegi guzaarna shuru kiya, to main samajhta hoon ki
aapki mummy ne baba ki woh 'jewellery' woh gehne dekh liye honge jo
unke tabeeyat unke lafzon mein chhupe huye the, jo unhone na keval
Bollywood ko, balki poore fan jagat ko deeye aur aapki shakhsiyat ke
andar bhi muntaqil keeye.

AM: 'I would like to say that but at that time when mummy gave up
all those things, baba was nowhere near the films, baba was, they
were madly in love with each other, that was it, that was it',
mummy 'room' mein aati theen 'and baba's expression was totally
different, you know, they were in awe of each other and we saw that'.

Q: achchha, mummy ko dekhkar baba koi gaana gungunaate the kabhi?
(laughs)

AM (laughs): mummy se kaafi log chheD-khaani karte the ki
bhabhiji, 'see bhaisaahab is writing songs like "laal chhaDi maidaan
khaDi", aapko to kabhi laal saree pahanne naheen dete aur doosron ke
liye likhte hain "laal chhaDi maidaan khaDi" (laughs).

Q: achchha Manoj saahab, laDke ke upar waise bhi baap ki giraft baDi
hoti hai, kaDee nazar hoti hai, to kabhi aapko maar-peeT paDee?
unhone kabhi baat aisi kahee ki 'beTa ab 'life' mein aisi karni hai
tumhe'?

MS: naheen, aap ne bahut achchha sawaal poochhaa, kyunki 'nature',
baba ka jo 'nature' tha bahut hi 'soft' aur 'caring' tha, jitni bhi
piTaaee huyi hamaari woh mummy ne karee (laughs), baba ne ek baar
bhi haath naheen uThaaya hamaare upar, 'but' hamein yaad hai ek baar
hamaare 'school' ki 'report' itni achchhi naheen thi, 'I think high
school 10th class and report card' to 'sign' karaana tha baba se, to
leke gaye, bataaya, baba ne kaha ki 'this is not good, yeh 'report'
achchhi naheen hai tumhari, to itna kaha aur yeh bhi kaha
ki 'hamaare kamre se baahar jaayo aur ham tumse baat naheen karenge.
It was such a painful experience, that the fact that I wont talk to
you, it was such painful, I am telling, I was crying and crying, I
wished' ki woh hamein do thappaD maar dete to 'I would have borne it
and it would have been over, but this was more painful than the
slaps. I went backt o him and said that I am very very sorry, I will
definitely improve upon'.

Q: to 'next time result' phir achchha huya tha? (laughs)

AM & MS laughs.

AM: 'baba was, we have spent so much, like' gaana likhne ke liye
baba kabhi Armill Colony, 'like those days you know, what is that
Borivali National Park', us taraf kahin, 'there were gardens and
all, he would come to our school, pick Gopa and me, he would have
some music director, or somebody with him, he would first take us
to, there was a restaurant near our school, we would have a cup of
tea and cakes, then he would drive us to Borivali, there I and Gopa
would play and he would sit and write his songs and pick us up and
come back.

Q: achchha ek baat jo maine paDhee hai, 'confirm' keejiyega ki baat
kis hadh tak sahee hai, aapke 'family house' ka naam 'Rimjhim', uski
wajah jo maine paDhee hai ki Shailendra saahab ko, baba ko 'rainy
days' aur 'rain' bahut pasand thi aur unhone yeh gaana bhi likha
tha "barsaat mein hamse mile tum", to apne ghar ka naam rakhne ki
wajah yehi thi, kya yeh baat sach hai?

AM: yeh sach to hai 'but I will add to it. Barsat was his first
film, to naam soch rahe the ki 'Barsat' rakhenge 'but 'barsaat' is
too harsh' (laughs), to baarish se hoke 'Rimjhim' is nice and thats
how it became 'Rimjhim', 'but the thought was to name the house,
this was his first house that he bought and to name it after the
first movie, that is how it became'.

Q: achchha to woh abhi tak kaayam hai?

AM: bilkul!

chunki baat ho rahi hai Shailendra saahab ke baare, unhi ka likhaa
huya gaana Mukesh ki aawaaz mein yeh gaana kai aapne sunaa hai, sun
leejiye, ek baat bataa doon ki is gaane ke baad guftagun mein phir
shaamil hongi Amla Mazumdar aur Manoj Shailendra, jo ki beTi aur
beTa hain Shailendra saahab ke.

Amla Mazumdar aur Manoj Shailendra ke saath Shailendra saahab ke
baare mein. achchha, kabhi Amlaji aur Manoj saahab, main aap dono se
yeh sawaal kar raha hoon ki itni saari yaaden hain, ek mahaan shakhs
jinka itna baDaa kirdaar hai Bollywood ki taareekh mein, Bollywood
kya, main kehta hoon ki dekhiye, fan ki koi sarhad naheen hoti, fan
ki duniya mein bahut baDaa naam hai Shailendra, kabhi kuchh sochaa
aapne ki koi kitaab likhi jaaye ya aaj tak yaaden jamaa kiya hai ya
kuchh aisa iraada hai koi?

AM: chaahte to hain 'but there is only one problem that', ham jo
chaahte hain ki baba ke jo gaane hain unki ek sangrah ho aur unke
jo 'poems' hain uska bhi 'we should put a book together and a book
on his life, lekin phir woh kis 'language' mein hoga, agar
ham 'English' mein shuru karte hain, 'to write it, then it will be
Hindi script and English because the songs and poems have to be as
they are, the essence is often lost in translations'.

Q: to yeh abhi faisla karna thoDaa mushkil hai?

AM: haan, lekin 'it will definitely be done and I am sure I will do
it in my life time.

Q: chaliye, ek 'copy' aap mujhe bhi deejiyega (laughs)

AM: bilkul!

Q: achchha Manoj saahab, main yeh aapse, Khaaskar aap se yeh sawaal
karna chaahoonga, film Teesri Kasam baba ki zindegi mein ek ajeeb
moD lekar aayi aur yahi film kaaran banee unke is duniya se jaane
ka, balki maine yahaan tak paDhaa hai ki jab yeh film 'release' huyi
to uske 'premiere' mein bhi baba naheen gaye the.

MS: jee haan, yeh sach hai.

Q: is baare mein aap bataaiye ki kya 'shock' unko lagaa, paisa Doob
gaya, sab kuchh. kis tarah unki zindegi daao par lag gayi?

MS: baba to ek 'artiste' the aur 'ruled by emotions'. unko hardam
yeh tha ki jab film banne lagi 'there were lot of problems in the
sense' ki Raj Kapoor was busy with his ow movies, pehle Sangam, phir
Mera Naam Joker, 'so dates were very difficult to get' aur is vajah
se, Khaas kar is vajah se film 'delay' hoti gayi aur 'unlike smart
savvy producers, he was a pure artiste and unlike the other
producers he did not take the money from the distributors to
finance the film. He put his own savings into the film'. unko hardam
aisa tha ki log yeh na kahe ki Shailendra ki film Dabbe mein
hai. 'He was worried about that and he did not want that to happen.
So he invested money out of his pocket and he borrowed money
personally on a very high interest rates, I remember some of the
lenders who would come, I did see them, but he didn't say anything
to anybody, he just took it to himself'. phir jaise jitni 'delay'
hoti gayi, 'obviously the interest rates were high and he had to pay
a hell of a price for that. As the film was being completed, he was
getting more and more dejected with his friends because he found
that his most closest friends letting him down at the most critical
time. pehle to 'dates' ka, jaise ki maine kaha ki 'dates' milna
mushkil ho raha tha, aur jab film 'complete' hone lagi 'I remember
this very distinctly baba mentioning' ki Raj Kapoor saw the film
almost complete, 'final trial' jo huya usmein unhone dekha aur kaha
ki 'this is a tragic story and tragic ending and that he should
change it'.

AM: 'He did his own films, example Aah ka ki that was released with
a tragic end, it flopped and they had to re-do it and make it a
happy ending and re-release the film for it to succeed. That example
Raj uncle quoted baba.

MS: 'but baba stuck to his gun, he said, I dont care, this is the
story, this is my, as he used to call, a poetry on celluloid, he
didn't want to change that. He said, "no I am going to stick to it".
Then Raj Kapoor also suggested that 'why dont you release it under
RK banner because in that case, you know distributors will just
compen money without any problem. At that point he said, "no, its
rather too late in the day to change to R K banners, I will stick to
Image Makers".

Q: baDe 'ego' the baba ke?

MS: 'ego' naheen, 'I think it was an offer little too late you know,
that is what I would think, so he stuck to his gun and the film,
because of the distributors were all, I mean, they were too sharp
for him and he was not a businessman, they were too sharp for him
and obviously because of that there were lot of legal procedures
and' jab woh film 'release' huyi baba 'could not attend the film
premiere ofcourse which he felt bad but that was not the real reason
for him to feel sad or bitter or anything but it was more because of
friendship. There is a misconception that the film flopped and it
was a financial loss which drove Shailendra to his death, this is
not true at all because' hamein achchhi tarah se yaad hai 'I was
about 15 years old at that time and one day baba was sitting alone
in his room and I went to the room and then I dont know why he
mentioned' ki 'look, I command quite a high price for each of my
songs, today at this moment Shankar Jaikishen has 50 films in their
hands, even if I write 1 song in each film I am more than able to
pay off all my debts, so financial reason does not exit at all, I
dont think that was the real reason for his death and that is
generally being portrayed but i dont know why, it may be the...

Q: yeh galat hai?

MS: haan, absolutely!

Q: waise zamaane ki reet bhi baDee ajeeb hoti hai, us zamaane mein
film 'flop' ho gayi aur baad mein chalkar dekhiye aaj
usey 'classics' mein shumaar kee jaati hai.

AM: 'It was, it was, it was just as if it was released as a reason
for him to go because' baba guzre hain '14th December 1966, 1967 it
won the President's Gold Medal - the highest award that anyone can
get in India, it won a citation in the Russian Film Festival, it won
so many awards, the songs are even being remixed today and as I said
even today 'Rimjhim' survives on Teesri Kasam. What Manoj bhaiya has
forgotten to add is that it was not his investment in the film, not
the financial investment that let him down, it was the investment in
people, in friends that killed him'.

MS: 'but as subsequently ofcourse the film did well...

Q: wahi baat maine kee na ki jab zamaana guzar jaata hai...

AM: 'Its so sad that when often I see that film and I get angry that
for this film baba was gone!'

Q: 'correct'! achchha aakhir mein teen chhoTe chhoTe sawaalaat.
aapko kuchh yaad hai baba ka apna sabse pasandida gaana kaun sa
tha, 'favourite song' unka? phir aapka kaun sa hai, Manoj saahab ka
kaun sa hai?

AM: baba ka agar 'if I remember songs that baba used to listen to
or' kabhi 'recording' ke baad, Bandini ke gaane, 'or may be that was
the time when we were growing up we remember "mat ro maata laal tere
bahu tere", that was there, then Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein...

Q: mera jo pasandida gaana hai woh hai "sajan re jhooTh mat bolo",
kitna 'simple', zindegi ke 'philosophy' ko kis andaaz se bayaan
karti hai.

MS: 'and I may add, as Amla has mentioned few songs, there are some
songs which I also distinctly remember baba enjoyed and recited in
front of us, one of them was from Yahudi - "yeh mera deewanapan hai"

Q: jismein unko 'award' bhi milaa tha?

MS: jee, 'another song was' "dost dost na raha". 'Shankar-ji of
Shankar Jaikishen was at home, I came to our house and sat on the
harmonium and both baba and him sang the song and Shankar-ji was so
excited and he was so full of energy at that time with the song and

AM: hamein sirf, ham sirf ek baat keh sakte hain ki 'which I really
want, which I dont see happenning, its to give due credit, when you
play a song which is baba's or any writer's, please mention them,
please mention their names because if the song is reaching out to
the people it is mix of the tune, the voice, the words, but the end
result which hits the hearts is the words and not to give credit,
not to mention the writer is really sad, that hurts me'.
