Indian hockey players to go on hunger strike

Irked by the "step-motherly treatment" meted out to the Indian hockey players by the central and four state governments, when compared to the sops given to cricketers after their win in the Twenty20 World Cup, the team members have decided to go on a 'hunger strike'.

National Chief Coach, Joaquim Carvalho strongly objected to the announcement of cash awards by the Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and the state governments of Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and Karnataka to the cricketers while ignoring the victory of his wards in the Asian Continental Championship early this month.

"Why our hockey players are orphaned and why our politicians are biased towards Hockey, the national game", Carvalho asked.

However, "we are grateful ever to the President of India for her sending individual letters congratulating the hockey players for their Asia cup win, without losing a match".

He declared that one coach and four players have planned to go on hunger strike before the Karnataka Chief Minister's house for his announcing Rs five lakh each to the members of the cricket team, while "treating the State hockey players like dust".

Carvalho said, "Karnataka CM has not till date congratulated his State hockey players for the Asia Cup win".

"Coach, Ramesh Parameswaran, manager R K Shetty and four players (Vikram Kanth, V R Rahunath, S V Sunil and Ignace Tirkey, who was recently adjudged for the Ekalaywa Award by the Karnataka Government) are to go on hunger strike before the Karnataka Chief Minister's house', he said.

It's raining money on Indian cricketers

The Indian cricket team not only won $4,90,000 in official prize money for their Twenty20 World Championship triumph here Monday, but the board also announced a $2 million bonus for the players.

Indian cricket board president Sharad Pawar, who watched the team beat Pakistan by five runs in the final at the New Wanderers Stadium, declared the bonus after Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team had won the thriller.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also announced a special Rs.10 million for Yuvraj Singh for becoming the first player to hit six sixes in Twenty20 international cricket.

Yuvraj had picked Stuart Broad of England for the special treatment in a Super Eight match.

BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi also announced that he would present an expensive car to Yuvraj as a personal gift.

In addition to all this they all get a Sahara home.......As far as i know Rahul Dravid has 4 houses in extremely posh localities and several acres of farm land on the outskirts..the same goes with Kumble..

Is cricket killing other sports in India?

YES, cricket is indeed killing other sports in India. People of India treat cricket as their fifth Veda or fourth Religion after Hinduism, Islam & Christianity. Cricket is not our national game, but it is celebrated as a festival, thanks to our Board, Government, sponsors and the media.

Cricket has also been used as a bridge between two nations, as seen in the recent India-Pakistan series. The stunning live coverage of cricket is also a reason for the demise of other sports.

When Gopi Chand won the all-England badminton championship in Britain no one cheered or cared because in the same week Harbajan Singh took a hat-trick and V. V. S. Laxman scored 281 in the Kolkata Test against Australia.

No one remembers the Olympic bronze medals won by tennis star Leander Paes (Atlanta, 1996) and weightlifter Karnam Malleswari (Sydney, 2000), but Anil Kumble's 10-wicket haul, Harbhajan's hat-trick, and Virender Sehwag's 309 will be evergreen in memory.

People don't know how to play other sports or what the rules of other games are. But they are well conversant with cricket. Irfan Pathan has only five months of experience in international cricket, but he is famous because of advertisement assignments. In fact, hockey is our national game and India has won many gold medals in the Olympics, but all we remember is Kapil Dev's team winning the cricket World Cup in 1983.

The media, Board, Government and sponsors are the culprits for cricket ruling the roost, to the detriment of other sports in India ....

Players of international fame and calibre in other sports are not given the proper media support and attention as well as proper facilities for further development. Quite a lot of them are disgusted with this sort of treatment and some of them have also threatened to give up Indian citizenship to fulfil their ambitions.

It is a shame that our country which has one-sixth of the total world population has to try hard to get even a single bronze medal in the Olympics. If this cricket mania continues India can never do well in the Olympics for years to come. ...

>>>> Hockey is the pride of our country and it is sad that its is reduced to oblivion.. I have grown up seeing the prime of Indian hockey and also its decline and the primary reasons are:

1. Poor management of hockey and too much of politics

2. Poor promotion of the game in contrast to other sports, primarily cricket

3. Less incentives for hockey players at the grass roots level

My parents always wanted me to play hockey, now I see no one cares about hockey and children are encouraged to play playstation rather than take up a sport.

Our real talent is in our villages and small towns and they are neglected.

I dont think obsession about cricket is the main reasonfor the decline of hockey and other sports although that could be one of the triggers. IMHO toomuch attention is given to cricket and this is robbing us of our real heritage that is hockey.

About Olympics....well you have said it. Its not that we dont have the talent, its just that we have not sincerely taken it as a priority. There is too much of waffle and politics and less concrete programs to identify, train and maintain future champions.

It's a shame alright that hockey is so neglected, but I have a solution that might help;
make cricket the new national sport. Attached Image

I feel that media is largely to blame, you hardly see any attention given to any other sports and sportspersons other than cricket.....
I blame the government too, they go overboard when it comes to cricket......

Just a thought - I think the great SRK's time would have been better spent in fighting for the hockey team players' cause after the T20 win rather than the self-promoting meeting with the cricket team on the field after the victory! Chak De's success was just beginning to give much deserved focus to Hockey but sadly the T20 victory took away the focus. Mr. SRK had the opportunity and the public following to move the focus back to the other sport but sadly he chose to promote himself.

BTW, is it just me who thinks that it was utterly shameful for a movie star to be allowed to be part celebrations of a world cup winning sports team on the field? I mean, what is his qualification, if any, besides his popularity as an actor, for him to deserve that "honour" and have his son be part of the lap of honour?

Anyway, back to Hockey and other sports, charity starts at home. I know of many people (me included) who were glued to TV, Internet and any other media during the finals of T20. People came back early from work, woke up early in the morning (in US) and in other ways, made time to watch and follow the games. If even half of those people (again, me included) follow the Hockey or Football then trust me, media will come because advertisers will come.

Most people find it shameful that we are such a starcrazy nation.........we need Aishwariya rai to carry the
olympic torch as if there was no sportsperson available......they are robbed of even these rare occassions when they are made to feel important and worthwhile.........it is either the much hyped spoilt cricketers or thefilm stars like sharukh and the like who grab all the media attention relevant or not.....sad state of affairs.
