South Africa v/s Netherlands - 16th March 2007

The match between South Africa and Netherlands set another record in the cricket world cup history. Yesterday’s match witnessed a million dollar worth performance by Herschelle Gibbs, who scored consecutive six 6’s in one over. The 7th ODI of the tournament became the most wonderful when Gibbs alone scored 36 runs from the balls of Netherland’s Van Bunge in the 30 th over. The spectators got euphoric. What a terrific performance! It was a deserving victory for South Africa over Netherlands. They won by 221 runs, and Gibbs was selected as the Player of the Match.

It all started with the ingenious South African batting, when Netherlands, after winning the toss, chose to field. The opener, AB de Villiers, however, got out in the first over itself, scoring zero. It was then the combined performance of South African captain, GC Smith and his companion Kallis, whose run shower contributed to 114 runs from the partnership. It was a wonderful ball from Borren at the end of the 19 th over that resulted in the captain’s retreat. It was a nervous experience for Smith to see the ball whirling up and coming down to the hands of Van Bunge.

JH Kallis set another important target for the 2007 world cup batsmen, by pulling an awesome 128 runs, not being out. The eleven 4’s and five 6’s alone contributed greatly to his cache of 128 runs off 109 balls in his first match in the ICC world cup 2007. Unlike Gibbs’, Kallis’ 4’s and 6’s were all spread out throughout the 40 overs.

Boucher played another leading role to crown the South African team in their first ODI in the world cup 2007. He delivered fantastic nine 4’s and four 6’s with ease and remained till the end of the overs, leaving many batsmen in the hutch. He contributed a significant 75 from 10 overs.

The bowling of Netherlands was not powerful enough in front of the mighty South Africans. Stellin, Borren and Troost contributed for one wicket each. It was a testing time for the Dutch in the grounds of St. Kitts.

Set a mountainous task of 354 in 50 overs, the Netherlands opened with Zuiderent and Reekers. With a slow pace, they started to bat. Alas! Reekers got run out in the 3rd over after scoring one 4, and he was followed by the next wicket Zuiderent in the 5 th over. The team had scored just 6 runs when Kervezee entered. It was Doeschate’s half century that saved the Dutch from ultimate humiliation; he scored 57 runs off 74 balls, till he got run out in the 36 th over. Captain Troost entered in the 38th over, delivered a good 4 as soon as he entered, but could not cope up with the pressure from the South Africa more. In the last ball, the Dutch captain was captured by the South African captain. The captain’s contribution was a mere five runs. The team finally got out for a paltry 132 runs.

The Netherlands captain was found contemplating after the match was over. The team needs to set more strategies before they get down to the grounds for the next performance against a comparatively tighter team, Australia, on Sunday 18th March. Meanwhile South Africa will prepare to face the Scot on Tuesday 20 th March.

New Zealand v/s England - 16th March 2007

The spirit of the Kiwis was the key attraction of the 6th ODI of the ICC World Cup 2007. The impressive victory of the team against England is a significant step towards the ‘big target’ of the Kiwis in this world cup. New Zealand won the match by 6 wickets with 54 balls remaining.

The batsman of the day was New Zealand’s SB Styris, who contributed a wonderful 87 off 113 balls and remained not out. Styris was selected as the Player of the Match. Another significant contribution was from JDP Oram, who also did not yield to the bowling pressure of the England team, and he scored a significant 63 off 83 balls.

It was Kiwis who won the toss and opted to field first. England showed a slow run rate in the beginning. Though they gained momentum in the middle of the match, they lost their spirit in the last overs, and as a result, could not score reasonably. The 50 overs ended setting an easy target of 210 for the Kiwis. It was Pietersen’s contribution of 60 runs from 92 balls that gave the pace to the England’s score in the middle. It was a depressing scene for the England team when he chipped his ball towards New Zealand’s James Franklin. A very costly wicket for the England !

The highest partnership for England was from Collingwood and Pietersen - 81 runs; Nixon and Plunkett together scored 71. The 50 overs were completed with three wickets left.

New Zealand ’s, Franklin, Bond and Styris, each contributed two wickets each, and Oram got one wicket of Bell. Franklin grabbed the wicket of Vaughan, captain of England team, when he struck a short ball towards England ’s captain. Vaughan tried to pull it, but failed and hit he wicket.

Then it was New Zealands’ turn and the openers of the first ODI at the ICC World Cup 2007 were the New Zealand captain Fleming and batsman Vincent.

It seems that the West Indies grounds are ominous for the openers! The openers were found to be the sufferers in the past few matches. The story was not different at the 6 th ODI too. The powerful Vincent had a sad retreat at the end of the 1st over, scoring nil. (England ’s opener Joyce had the same story). Taylor joined next, and the devil followed. He was immediately bowled out by Plunkett in the second over, leaving the captain in a dilemma. Fleming lost his wicket when he had a powerful hit on the ball from Anderson. The ball was flying high, remained in the air for a while, giving sufficient time to Joyce to catch it. He could score only 7 runs from 11 balls, but managed one 4.

It was the significant contribution of the duo Styris and Oram that lit the day for the Kiwis. Together they scored 138, while the partnership between Styris and McMillan contributed another noteworthy 53 runs. In 41 overs, with just 4 wickets, New Zealand thus grabbed the victory over England. England ’s Anderson got the credit of two wickets, while Plunkett and Panesar had one each.

Jubilant Kiwis are set to take over Kenya on 20th March whereas England has to go rigorous towards Canada on 18th March.
