Hamara Forums _ Noor Jehan _ Non-film Ghazals By Noor Jehan

Posted by: Inaam Jul 27 2006, 12:33 PM

This thread is devoted to non-film ghazals sung by Madam. Starting it with a longstanding favourite of mine Tum aaey ho na shab-e-intizaar guzri hai a beautiful ghazal, penned by my favourite poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. I am not sure about the year of recording of this ghazl, but it seems it was recorded in late 60s.

More Ghazals coming at you soon. I have lots to share, if you want any particular ghazal, feel free to write me in this thread.

Enjoy!

Next One:

Aandhi chali tou naqsh-e-kaf-e-pa nahin mila
Lyrics by another my favo poet Mustufa Zaidi tongue1.gif

Enjoy!

Many thanks for 'Tum Aaye Ho' Inaam bhai. I did have a recording from record but our record was very very crackly and this has great sound. It is also a favourite of mine, I also love 'Aa Ke Wabasta Hai'.

(Sorry I haven't been participating lately, kaam to dhal gaya tha, lekin susraal ne phir surprise visit de di. My wife's Mamoo and Momani suddenly appeared at our doorstep on Monday from Faisalabad so we have been looking after them! They will be leaving on the 5th August so I should be back in action by then hopefully !)

Posted by: Inaam Jul 31 2006, 01:30 PM

Thanks for your feedback, Jamal tongue1.gif (Kam se kam aik feedback tou aaya smile.gif ) I have the 60s version of 'Aa ke waabasta hain..' on a tape, if you want it, I can digitize for you.

BTW, uss list ka kya huwa jo tumne Rehmat Gramophone Faisalabad ko bheji thi?

Posted by: jamalf_akbar Aug 1 2006, 02:11 AM

uss list ki to ab baat na karein - I am very disappointed with them. My brother-in-law called and said that they could only find 8 or 9 out of the total list !! He is arranging for them to copy them onto CD and send them to me, so I am just waiting for that really. As soon as I get it I will upload the songs for all to share.

Thanks for the offer for Aa ke wabasta hai, but I managed to get a great copy from the forum some time back. I can't remember who uploaded it now. The version I had of this song was also quiet crackly and had a lot of noise in the recording.

Inaam, lovely thread. BTW, I have a request. Someone intimated me that Radio Pakistan has released rare recordings of Noor Jehan, especially the 1965 war songs and ghazlas of Faiz. I'm aware that Radio Pakistan has recordings of ghazlas Noor Jehan sang for Faiz in a private Mehfil, somewhere in late 1950s, including 'mujhse pehli si', 'dono jahan teri' & 'aa ke wabasta'- all self-composed. It could be that finally these recordings are accessible. Please check with Radio Pakistan biggrin.gif It could a veritable treasure

Pulkit, I do not know about any release of NJ songs by Radio Pakistan, except Kalaam-e-Iqbal (famous poem of Sir Mohammed Iqbal, Shikwa/Jawab-e-Shikwa). As for as her patriotic songs are concerned, a whole album of her patriotic songs is available in market. ( I think more then 15 songs)

I have a tribute show (on VCD) about Noor Jehan, presented by Indus TV. They had included some short clips of ‘Mujhse pehli si mohabbat’ and ‘dono jehan teri mohabbat mein haar ke’ which Noor Jehan sang in a private mehfil, without music. Unfortunate the clips are very short and there is a awful sound in background. mad.gif

I am uploading here both the clips for you.

Inaam bhai - these clips are fantastic - what I would do to get the full versions of these. Is there any contact information on the VCD? I think I saw this programme while I was in Pakistan but my uncle did not have a video recorder ohmy.gif( Is there a film clip of the song 'Woh Khwab Sohana Toot Gaya' from Lakht-e-Jigar because I remember seeing that in a tribute programme but can't remember if it was this one. If I recall, is this the one with Sitara Devi in it?

Posted by: Inaam Aug 3 2006, 10:15 AM

Jamal. The clips are from a musical show of Indus TV ‘Tribute to a Legend’, following is the link of the DVD:
http://www.dukandar.com/tributetonoorjehan.html
There was a short documentary in the beginning of this show.

The show u r talking about is another program. That was actually a documentary (in three parts), it was shown on the occasion of first death Anniversary of Noor Jehan by the same TV Channel. It was produced by Muneeza Hashmi (daughter of Faiz Ahmed Faiz). It was the best documentary about Noor Jehan, I have ever seen in my life. (on second number, PTV’s Khiraj-e-Tehseen is the Best program about Noor Jehan. DVD is available), unfortunately Muneeza’s documentary is not available in market.

The interviews of Naushad & Dilp Kumar, which are included in ‘Tribute to a Legend’, are actually stolen from Muneeza’s documentary.

I am badly looking for this documentary. sad1.gif

Thanks Inaam, I have these clips on VCD, loved to have now on my PC biggrin.gif .Why do these TV guyz tantalize us- why don't they bring out such rare treasures- Noor Jehan's voice here is a veritable idyll.

BTW, what is on Shikwa CD unsure.gif ??

Posted by: Inaam Aug 4 2006, 11:26 AM

To my knowledge, 'Shikwa/Jawab-e-Shikwa' is not vailable in CD. I have the album in cassett form.

Dear Inaam

Would be great if you digitalize the contents of tape and upload and also provide info as to when it was sung. Just check this URL, it claims a CD of same has been released. You can also check with them for other NJ stuff. Here's the link-

Pulkit, thanks for the link. This is news to me. I will definitely try to get these CDs.

The cassette contains three items, sung by three different singers. Noor Jehan, Um-e-kulsoom (legendary Egyptian singer) and a male singer (I forgot the name).

Noor Jehan sang some excerpts from Iqbal’s poems ‘Shikwa’ & ‘Jawab-e-shikwa’. Miyan Shehryar composed music. It is about 20 minutes recording. I guess it was recorded in mid 70s.

Is this one of the Tarannum videos? One dvd that U (Inaam) sent me was like that--Babaji, Dlip Kumar and many others.

Posted by: Inaam Aug 10 2006, 01:43 PM

unsure.gif Not sure, Priya. Usmein Nusrat Fateh Ali nahin hai... I think ye koi aur show hai. But I am sure kuchh bhi naya nahiin hoga ismein.

Posted by: priya Aug 10 2006, 04:22 PM

I think these companies just mix and match and rerelease the same stuff. I got a dvd converted long back from a friend, it had tarannum gems and then NFAK in concert. Totally different, nothing where Madam and NFAK come together. Maybe wahi hai.

Posted by: Mukeshfan Aug 16 2006, 04:20 AM

It can be Priya.

These companies do everything to sell these days.
I only could find the code: ZFD 324
And NFAK has indeed nothing to do with Madam Noor.
Check on your DvD it can be the same I don't know
but if there are intrests I can u/l some samples.
Lett me know.

Regards,
MUKESHFAN

Posted by: priya Aug 16 2006, 11:46 PM

I guess it is the same one. The songs U mention are the same. sad1.gif

Posted by: Mukeshfan Aug 17 2006, 05:04 AM

Than Inaam has these already
Well nothing new for this Madam Fan.
All we can do is search for the next DVD
If it's available here. They are quite expansive when these
companies see that these concerts and material gets rare
they ask triple prices.
Atleast we have a Forum to exchange our material.

But Inaam bhai keep uploading rare material yaar
kahaan gum ho gaye janaab.

MFji, aap kahan rehte hain? Yahan Kerala mein strangely no Madam stuff comes to the market. Except the old pre-partition Hindi songs from HMV. I have no idea of what gets released. Mehdi Hassan, Abida Praveen, Farida Khannum ke album bahut milte hain but no Madam. doh.gif sad1.gif

Posted by: Mukeshfan Aug 18 2006, 11:14 AM

Priya looks like we both are in the same situation,
not have much of Pakistani artists aspecially Madam,
and just got attentioned by here voice while were collection
songs of our Idols for years.
Well I hope that we got more material from Inaam bhai.
so we still can enjoy of Noor and other Pakistani Greatest.

Btw. Inaam: Did Noor also sung some Gazals of
Galib: Can you u/l some of them.
Aspecially Nukta Cheen Hai Ghum-e-Dil

Regards,
MUKESHFAN

Posted by: priya Aug 19 2006, 11:29 PM

MFji,

Madam starred in a Pakistani moview called Ghalib. It was her last film as actress. So several songs there apart from later ghazals recorded for her TV programmes. I have the cd--will ul nuktacheen for U. Gotta convert it to mp3.

Posted by: Mukeshfan Aug 21 2006, 11:13 AM

Thanx For looking it up for me Priya.
Make it the best Qality file as Mp3 and if you have the time for it
can you convert the whole CD.
I just started to listen to Noor and here it's hard to get her gazals and
Geet.
Thanx for the efforts

MUKESHFAN

Posted by: Inaam Aug 21 2006, 01:05 PM

Apart from the ghazals of movie 'Ghalib', she sang two of Ghalib ghazals for PTV, 'Dard ho dil mein tou dawa kiijey' & 'Mein hoon mushtaaq-e-jafa, mujh pe jafa aur sahi'.

MF Ji (By the way, aap ka naam kya hai?) please give me some time, I will upload them for you. tongue1.gif

Posted by: priya Aug 21 2006, 05:08 PM

Inaam, not to worry, main hoon na. I will ul all such songs. Tum rare songs ul karo jo hamare paas nahin hai. Ok. biggrin.gif

Sure MFji, am converting the cd right now--sorry I have been busy lately. MP3 128 chalega na? ohmy.gif

I cannot do 320 and so on. sad.gif

Will be uling the songs here.
I have to have my thread na. tongue1.gif Not rare or video so made another thread where I will ul all the songs requested which I have in my collection.

Posted by: Mukeshfan Aug 22 2006, 01:05 AM

Priya thanx for the efferts,
Please try to make the MP3's in VBR@ 192Kbts
That is the best Qality to save for me and in VBR mode
the Peek Level will be the best possible without Qality and sound
concessions.
Please prevend the background hiss sound when you converting these files
(That take place when you convert files in to low Qality or you damage
these files and these damages can't be corrected afterworts)
Use The Latest LAME codec to convert it's the best of these days.

I hope the most files will not be larger then 3 to 4 MB for you.
According the calculation of using 1MB per minute.

Regards,
MUKESHFAN

Posted by: priya Aug 22 2006, 01:20 AM

The hiss is on the cd. I did try to reduce it but that is the best I can do. sad1.gif
Will make it vbr next time. CE was on default CBR and did not check it.
I cannot use LAME codec as I do not have it or know what it is and also if it is some huge thing to dl cannot do that either.

The late 1950s private mehfil was recorded by Professor Raza Kazim.
His institute, Sanjan Nagar, Lahore, has since re-mastered those recordings.
The first 4 or 5 tracks are Faiz reading his poetry. Then Noor Jehan sings Faiz without any instruments.
The only musical sounds you hear is the beat of her hand (some waah waahs from the gathering (inc; Faiz himself), and some horns of buses here and there).
Some of the ghazals and nazms were composed by Noor Jehan right then.
She also sings 'aaj ki raat' from Jugnu and right afterwards sings Faiz's 'aaj ki raat'. The Faiz version was earlier sung by her before the Partition at Manto's house at his insistence. You can read about that in the article posted by janaab jamalf_akbar, on page 168.
In the end she sang 'mundeya sialkotia' obviously for Faiz Sahab. During that song she forgets a word or a line and gives out the most endearing laugh that's to die for.

The cd can be obtained from the school, Sanjan Nagar.
It is indeed a treasure. I will upload some of it late today.

Vow Asheik ji
thats a great news, I heard a few parts from those recordings long back on T.V. and have spent years searching for them. She composed the poetry on the spot, it included Mujhse pehlisi mohabbat and dono jahan teri mohabbat mein. If you have them please upload them, they will be a treat for all Noor Jehan fans.

Warmly
Pulkit

Asheik Sahab! Many thanks for this rare gem. It is much appreciated. bow.gif I was looking for this recording since ages, I had a short piece of this recitation, recorded from a TV documentary. This is absolutely a fabulous recitation, very very enchanting. Unfortunately there is a little disturbance in the sound at middle, is it with original recording or just in your posted file?

Glad to've shared it with all of you.
The few disturbances are in the recording itself, afaik.
I got it from someone who got it from Mr. Raza Kazim personally.
If someone here would like to make copies of the cd for others on here, let me know. I'll mail the cd to you.
Here's aa ke vaabasta hein. This composition was created by Madam right then and there. some part of history recorded on tape:

Posted by: asheik Jan 23 2007, 07:33 PM

The first four are Faiz Sahab's recitals, five are Noor Jehan's rendtions of his poetry.
Of the film songs, one is a different take on Faiz's aaj ki raat and the other is a good humored dedication to the poet by the singer.

Also, if you have any requests for songs that I can upload for you then please let me know. You are absolutely right. There are no words to express how I felt when I first heard this too.
That's why I'm not saying much. I'll let the art speak.

Here are the two versions of aaj ki raat.

How do I thank thee? Let me count the ways...but I can't. There are no words in any language I know that will adequately express the sentiments of my overflowing heart. To listen to Noor Jehan sing Faiz in this manner is a truly moving experience. aap ne to subah subah rulaa diyaa!

Some years ago, Rajan Parrikar had posted on the Net a 7-minute recording of Begum Akhtar being taught a 'thumri' (ras ke bhare tore nain) by Anjanibai Malpekar (not a famous name but one of the greats of classical music). I treasure that clip as a slice of history. I never thought that one would get to experience history in the making yet again in the same lifetime. aap ne vo kamaal bhii kar dikhaayaa!

The human mind is a greedy, grasping thing - abhi is kaa lutf puraa uThaayaa bhii nahii.n hai k Khayaal jaag uThaa - ye puurii CD mil jaaye to kyaa baat hai! smile1.gif I live in Chennai and the likelihood of being able to procure a CD from Lahore if fairly remote. Thanks again.

Somehow I can't find where to enable personal messaging in the control panel.
Once that is sorted out, I can get your addresses and mail out the cd.
Until then here's phir koyi aya.
This nazm was the sole work by Faiz published in my class 9-10 Muraqqae Adab during the fascist Zia years.
The melody composed by Madam is very soulful.
Hearing Faiz and others say 'wah kya baat he' every now and then to the song and Noor Jehan hmm'ing her appreciation to him is equally soulful.

janab Abhay, I wonder if the thumri that you mention is available to the members here.

Since this is NJ thread and we people have been amused by Many Great of NJ's Non-Film Ghazals in this thread so just take my thread as a continuation / extension of this very thread..as a tribute to all you great uploaders n lovers of NJ smile1.gif I am starting in Geet Ghazal and Nazam section. I have posted some pics of CDs there at

Yaaro Iam looking for NJ song " wo mera ho na saka to main bura kyon maanon"

If any one having this song please upload. I have this song but in poor quality !

Indian version of this song is VERYYYY fav of mine.
this might be 5-7th fav song of me which has turned out to be inspired from a NJ song !

and also please do mention composer and lyricist - Brilliant lyrics !! bahut hi badiya lyrics !! simple magar dil ke baatein !

here is the video of this song= "wo mera ho na saka to bura" . Beautiful picturisation
Film is ajmat

This video reminds me of the SJ- Rafi song from Kanyadaan " meri zindagi mein aate to kuchh". ek dam similar scene hai.

Mili hai chandani jinko ye unki apni kismat hai
Mujhe to apne muqadar se fakat itni shikaayat hai !
Mujhe aye kaaash........
