Which version of the movie, Devdas would you rather see again?

Posted by: Nimii Nov 3 2003, 10:54 AM

NONE!

N smile.gif

Posted by: extenok Nov 5 2003, 05:28 PM

I have only watched the 2002 version.
But from what I've heard my father and other seniors who had watched Dilip Kumar's version say about Dilip's acting makes me think seriously about watching it.
They all speak highly of Dilip's softness, both in the eyes and the facial expressions. And how Shah Rukh face doesn't possess that softness.
I guess what others might hold against Devdas(2002) is the whole financial sway that it holds over the previous movies made and also over its contemporaries.

Too soppy/sad stuff for my taste (don't we have enough sadness everywhere already??).

I haven't seen any version & do not even intend to see any. "Kahe Ko Khali Fokat Rona Dhona!"

I like music of 2 Devdas which are K. L. Saigal & Dilipkumar's.

So no voting rolleyes.gif

Please see my review of this movie: (in Hindi) at

http://www.kulsh.com/BaitheThale.htm

I agree with most of you. The story of Sharatchandra is neither idealistic nor realistic -- at least not in today's society.

The novel has a greast HISTORICAL importance, nothing more.

This story was most unfit to spend so much money on....

Vimal Roy's version was so much better.

No fan of 1935 Devdas. Koi baat nahin main to
ek gaane ke liye hi ise dekh sakta hoon:

Balam aaye baso mere man mein.

"The film was a complete departure from the then prevalent theatricality in acting, treatment and dialogue. Barua initiated a style of acting that was natural and unaffected. His method was to underplay, to convey emotion through the slightest tremor of the voice and use significant pauses in between the dialogue to maximum effect. This naturalness of tone spilled over to the dialogue as well. Rather than dialogue in a florid style as was prevalent then, Barua who had been exposed to European naturalistic trends ensured the dialogue in the film was the way in which one spoke in real life. "

quoted by a gentleman on net. smile1.gif

A trend setter fillam at that time.

And Balam ..........song is one of the earliest romantic
songs of HF Industry. It is representative song of that
decade. Above all, KL Sehgal's voice adds always
special. Song is based on a rare raga of classical music
'sindura'., a raga popular among singers of Agra Gharana.
The Raga is however easily available in Instrumental form
by the Great maestro Pt. Ravishankar and Buddhadeb Dasgupta.

Interesting note is this is one of anytime ragas. smile1.gif

worth a see atleast(for cine lovers).

Devdas from '56 is a fantastic movie..DK is just great. And Devdas from 2k2 is not bad, but the one with DK is just great...Very nice acting by DK (very natural)

The other 2 versions I haven't seen it...so can't say anything about them..... rolleyes.gif

Posted by: masoomkamal Nov 14 2004, 01:31 AM

I am very sorry that Dilip Kumar is being compared with Hollywood Actors. It is just like that you compare Biryani with Hot Dog !
Hollywood's actors are very different, their mannerism, their atitude, their style as well as their culture are very different with ours. What Dilip kumar has done in Devdas, no any actor of Hollywood can do. I bet.
Dont see Devdas as a Rona Dhona film. See it to see the best direction, best acting, best storyline, best beauty, best music. Dilip Kumar is just great in this film. If you want to laugh to see Devdas, please see Sahgal's Devdas. LOL.

Posted by: catch22 Dec 27 2004, 01:40 PM

I have seen most of Dilip Kumar's movies, most of Amitabh's movies & quite a few of SRK's movies. I have not seen any of the versions of Devdas, as I could'nt make myself watch a drunken tragedy. But given a choice, I would watch a Dilip movie any day, any time. He is a class by himself, acting personified.

Posted by: Nimii Dec 27 2004, 03:00 PM

You must see KLS one too! Now that would be something with 3 versions to judge!

OK in bengal during that time there were no mansions of the sorts shown in this DEVDAS (2002). Moreover, Parvati and the dancer never meet!!!!

It is the simplicity of rural Bengal that gives it the appeal, which no amount of extravaganza can even start a comparison!!!!!

Even the Bengali version by Uttam, Soumitra Chatterjee was not good.

A classic scene in the Bimal Roy version shows Chandramukhi (Vyjayantimala) going in search of Devdas (Dilip Kumar) and the palki carrying Paro (Suchitra Sen) going past her in the opposite direction. That the closest they came to meeting!

But that would not leave scope for "Dola Re Dola". sad1.gif

Well, guess we know that Bimal-da's version was faithful to the original Saratchandra story -- virtually an 'art film'. Whereas we recognize that the recent Bollywood version was a "glossy entertainer".

I've heard good things about the old Hindi version starring K. L. Saigal, but haven't watched it.

SLB's Devdas was absolutely off the mark from the novel. You cant call it as a making of the novel on the celluloid.. it could be only termed as an adaptation. The story has been changed a lot. Due to the photography and ostentatious sets.. the movie attracted the eye!

The earlier one with Dilip Kumar and others, well cant comment as I havent seen it! The same goes for the earlier version !!

I guess one should not compare the book to the movie at any time!

The same is true for Parineeta - 3 to 4 versions of the movie have been made!

I've seen both - The Dilip Kumar one and the new one. Although I like Dilip Kumar, I must say the old is sooo slow its such a drag that it becomes almost unwatchable. You'd better see paint dry. The new one atleast moves fast and there is something happening all the time

but then thats my opinion

Which version of the movie, Devdas would you rather see again?

hey pradeep,

although both the k.l. saigal & dilip kumar versions are considered master pieces-

my vote would go to the the 1956 version of dilip kumar.

my main reasons are:

a) the movie has big exceptional star names & yet they are perfectly cast.

sunglasses2.gif bimal roys direction is next to perfection, infact his arguably the greatest director ever- his awards & a

claims would prove that.

c) both the music & lyrics were simply amazing.

p.s.

i think the shah rukh khan version is nothing more than a commercial stunt in every way possible.

very disappointing effort but the very very talented sanjay leela bhansali.

Posted by: Agasti Mar 27 2010, 10:39 AM

Incidentally, the four versions of Devdas also represent the changing trends in the direction, music, and acting in Hindi film history. Sanjay Bhansali's Devdas is in keeping with the life in fast lanes of 21st century even for a Devdas. I did like K. L. Saigal and Jamuna's version with its cute innocence. The Bimal Roy version offered us the Devdas as he should have been offered. On every count, music, direction, and performances, it turned out to be perfect. Possibly, in the b/w set up it seems more appealing. Colour might have marred its pathos.
