Dear All!
This quiz was uploaded by me some months back at Mohammad Rafi Singer Group at YahooGroups
Here is the the complete interview by me which is also available at the group.I will upload all snaps of this interview soon.

Azam Baig- A Music Maestro -PART1
By Shahid Hussain
(singer.rafi@gmail.com)

In this era of materialism and rapid changes in all fields of life one does not has time to stay a while and look back to reminiscent the yesteryear memories even the yesterday happenings.
But incase of vantage natured person one does not live in present and yearns to dig out the events or people which are covered under the cruel dust of times.
This write-up is the result of same urge to find out the living legends and unsung heroes of the past. The person whose clue was with me is a person who was co-singer of Mohammad Rafi, an ace singer of Indo-Pak sub-continent and Mohammad Rafi had rendered voice under his baton as well.
A. B Kabir (Azam Baig Kabir) at his 8th decade of life is as active as at his first recording with Mohammad Rafi, G. M. Durrani and a singer from Lahore (all struggling singers except G. M. Durrani).
He was in his 18th year of youth when he was selected by Shyam Sunder, Music Director of Film “Gaaon ki Gori” (A.K.A village Girl-1945) for the fun song “Jab dil ho qabu main to dildar ki aisi tasi”. (If heart is in control who cares of lover). They were novice and did not know how to react and behave with celebrities as Azam Baig reminiscences “that was the era of innocence and non-commercialization. On the recording I interfered amid G. M Durrani’s singing and correcting him saying that Durrani Is tarah gao (Durrani Sing in this way). Shyam Sunder the music director asked Mohammad Rafi Sahib to get me out and make me understand. I didn’t realize what had gone wrong. Mohammad Rafi Sahib led me out said humbly “yeh kia kiya Durrani nahi kehna Durrani sahib kehna hai (What you have done? You are not supposed to call only Durrani call Durrani Sahib)”. It was the first thing I learnt in this field. Those who have heard the song will find an enormous element of fun in lyrics and in singing”.
Azam baig expressed his last wish of life to hear the song because he had not heard the song till after the recording and finalizing of the said song. I fulfill his wish by providing him the song and the tears in his eyes with love for me made my day. I felt myself on seventh cloud. During his conversation his eyes sparkled with the glare of heydays’ memories with the blend of despairs. “Shahid Sahib it was my ambition to be a part of film industry, not as a singer but as a music director. Although I worked a little but did my best. Now keeping my current financial condition in mind I regret not to give heed to Mohammad Rafi Sahib’s advice. When I took project as a music director, he advised me to continue my singing career and not to be a music director. If I had had done so the circumstances, I believe, would have been less hostile”.

As a co-singer of Mohammad Rafi he has wonderful memories. "Although we had not worked a lot but we spent hefty time together and had many memorable moments. Once we two were rehearsing for a song in studio during that two young actresses, Protima Das Gupta and Begum Para passed through us. An idea struck my mind and I murmured in the ear of Mohammad Rafi. He nodded in rejection but as he was of an innocence nature so on my insistence he started singing as per my plan:

O Sitam-e- jaana……… Yaara
In the end I extended ---Begum Para, Begum Para
The ladies got annoyed and went out because the original song did not have words Begum Para. Mohammad Rafi Sahib complained me that he was not of that kind and did not like to make any person unhappy or annoyed. However, afterwards both girls realized the joke and all misunderstanding vanished".

About the humbleness of Mohammad Rafi, Azam Baig narrated another incident. Azam Baig signed his debut film "Shakti"-1948, as a music director with Ram Prashad (Co-music director) and gave two songs to Mohammad Rafi to sing "On a rehearsal session Mohammad Rafi was not performing as per my requirement. It was a natural thing as he was just a new comer and tune was too hard for a novice singer. On the other hand he did not have singing back ground. I annoyingly said "Rafi yaar Lahore se paidal aye ho kia? (Mohammad Rafi dear have you come here on your feet all way from Lahore)". Which meant that had he come without training of singing from Lahore? At that he did not annoyed and pressed my knees and said "you know better". Such kind of humbleness made him an ace singer of subcontinent. If one would not be of humble nature one could not touch the heights of fame in any field".

A literally unknown person like Azim Baig should consider himself highly fortunate to have had some little association with a GIANT like Mohammed Rafi in one or two songs!!!!!!!!!

I wish that had been his tone and tenor!!!!!!

Venkat

PS. Azim Baig sholud say to himself that bit about humbleness!!!!!

I have changed many views in life since my childhood, but not my view of Rafi Saab as the God-sent Gandharva who visited this Earth briefly to spread ultimate ecstasy among genuine music-lovers!
