Hamara Forums _ Shamshad Begum _ An Article

Posted by: sbfan Feb 22 2009, 09:12 PM

Shamshad Begum remembers the time she came in contact with Raj Kapoor. “He was unknown then. In fact, he introduced himself as Prithviraj Kapoor’s son. Raj was making a film and he wanted me to sing for it. I was very busy then. But out of respect for Prithviraj Kapoor, I agreed. I used to come home in the afternoon to rest. I told Raj to come to my house with his harmonium and tabla players — Shankar of Shankar Jaikishen fame and Ram Ganguly, the music director. I squeezed in the practice session during my rest time and went to the studio only for the recording.”

The film was the hugely successful and not to mention, the music was a super hit. In keeping with Shamshad Begum’s fate, Raj Kapoor also never looked back. “But gracious that he was, once after many years when he met us at my mother’s concert, he publicly said that it was she who made his life. He also said, ‘But I couldn’t do anything for her.’ He later privately admitted that it was not him who didn’t want her to sing but Jaikishen who was anti Shamshad Begum,” says Usha. \

Interesting to see this post. Many MDs have begun their careers with her including Madanmohan, Ram Ganguly, Shankar Jaikishen, S.D. Burman, O.P. Nayyar but used other singers later due to politics.
Shankar Jaikishen have certainly used her less but its not that they didn't use her at all. I know of only three songs:-
1. Ek Do Teen Aaja Mausam hai Rangeen- Awaara
2. Oh My Dear - Nagina (with Rafi)
3. Haathon Mein Mehndi Racha De Koi - Parde Ke Peeche (with Asha and Usha)
Interestingly one is a solo, one a duet and the third a trio.
I have the first two songs and must say that Shamshad ji did a wonderful job on the opportunities they did give. My feeling is that since their first movie with Lata Mangeshkar they were more comfortable working with her. Due to this they worked very sparingly with other singers.

Request generous members to upload the third song.

The article implies that an early Shamshad song for a Raj Kapoor pic (possibly Ek Do Teen) was composed by the duo of Shankar and Ram Ganguly, not Shanker-Jaikishen. Is that correct?

Kind Regards

No Faraaj.
The discussion about her rehearsals is for Raj Kapoor's movie Aag which had music by Ram Ganguly which has most of the songs by Shamshad Begum. Shankar and Jaikishen were his assistants for that movie. Shamshad ji talks about practicing for songs of that movie.

The song Ek Do Teen was recorded for Awara few years down the line which had music by Shankar-Jaikishen.

The Powai staying legendary playback singer Shamshad Begum, neglected by the music industry and authorities for several years, is suddenly back in the spotlight - for being nominated for the Padma Bhushan award, and for being conferred the prestigious O P Nayyar award.

Speaking to her son-in-law Col Ratra he said, “She is jubilant and has accepted the Padma Bushan award. Yesterday we received a congratulatory telegram from the Home Minister Chidambram. She has also received the invitation for the ceremony to be held in New Delhi in March/April 2009. She would like to travel to Delhi for receiving the award.”

That's a very nice article. We're proud of her. Any idea if she did go for the award ceremony?
