Hamara Forums _ Lata Mangeshkar _ Rolling Back The Years With Lata Mangeshkar

Posted by: unni Apr 8 2006, 04:51 PM

I had over 2500 songs of Lata-ji on the hard-drive that crashed, though I would've heard only half of them! Fortunately, I had copied them on CDs and given them to my brother in India --- so they were not permanently lost.

But while trying to restore on computer my collection of Lata-ji's songs, I chose just those songs that I like most. As of now, I have put together close to 275 selected songs from 1948 to 1998, and tagged them with year/film name/music director. Most of them are popular, easy-to-find songs, and there are just a handful of rare ones. They are taken from film discs, CDs, audio-tapes, vinyls and HF uploads. I've checked each track for sound-quality, sound-edited them as required, and adjusted the volume to the 'default' of GoldWave.

Please let me know if it is of interest to you, whether you'd like me to upload them, in case you'd also like to build up a collection, in chronological order, of many of Lata-ji's finest songs through the years (upto 1987 only, due to forum rules).

unni - of course...we'll be interested ! what a question ?

How many rare ones - as per your list ? You could start with them ...in any order...maybe chronologically, if possible ...otherwise alphabetically...which should be easier

that is very nice of you Unni ji!
these days i am also cataloging all my songs.

its rather boring job but if one has to have so many songs, some system is required. smile.gif

Sri,

I have them filed chronologically, since the idea was to create a collection of her songs through the years, sort of a musical record of the progression of her glorious singing career. And I chose songs that appealed to me, not just because they are rare.

Even the rarer ones may not be 'rare' for HF members, songs such as "Bazuband Khul Khul Jaaye", "Dar Dar Ki Thokrein Hain", "Pyar Ki Yeh Talkhiyan", "Subah Ka Intezaar", "Abhi Tau Mein Jawaan Hoon", "Chali Ja Chali Ja", "Do Din Ke Liye Mehmaan Yahaan", "Preetam Meri Duniya Mein", "Duniya Hamarey Pyar Ki", "Chalta Rahein Yeh Karvaan", "Rotey Rotey Guzar Gayi", "Hamaare Baad Ab Mehfil Mein", "Kajrey Badarwa Re", etc.

If we commence this thread, it would be beneficial to all of us if members would contribute to it with additional songs for the respective years, and also provide better-sound-quality tracks than the ones I upload.

Posted by: sri Apr 8 2006, 05:34 PM

Some preliminary ideas :

1. Only good songs should be considered ......not something for collectors to tick on their checklists.
We can live with your choice here biggrin.gif

2. Maybe we could start with an initial list from your side...and then populate it further as we go along, based on suggested additions which are PMed to you / suggested on the thread. But adding to the list should be done only by you

3. We should look for two sources at least - one from audio CD and one from the soundtrack (DVD/VCD)..and in case these are not upto the mark. then other sources - e.g., from gramophone record. Then TV. Last radio.

4. Once you indicate what you have...the gaps can be identified...and others can be asked to contribute the missing ones, provided they are absolutely sure of the source of the recording

5. Start with a manageable list ....say one particular year. Close this before moving on to the next year.

Agree with you. But members may come up with suggestions/uploads of songs for the particular year. There are bound to be lots of lovely songs I would not have included.

Sure, we can start with my choices. But, to my thinking, no harm if members add with their suggestions/uploads. After all, my choices are not comprehensive and may not even be to everyone's liking, and members may suggest/add/prefer other songs in that year.

3. We should look for two sources at least - one from audio CD and one from the soundtrack (DVD/VCD)..and in case these are not upto the mark. then other sources - e.g., from gramophone record. Then TV. Last radio.

Totally agree with you. If a better-quality track is available, members' uploads would be greatly appreciated.

4. Once you indicate what you have...the gaps can be identified...and others can be asked to contribute the missing ones, provided they are absolutely sure of the source of the recording.

Lata-ji has sung so many thousands of songs. There would be tons of good songs missing. Let's count on members to remind and mention/upload tracks they feel deserve to be included.

5. Start with a manageable list ....say one particular year. Close this before moving on to the next year.

I could start with 1948, and members can suggest/provide additional songs for that year. Even if they suggest/provide them later, no problem. Hopefully they'll be tagged with year first, so that they get filed year-wise/alphabetically.

U-ji -- this reminds me --- the song "Dar Dar Ke Thokrein" is not there in any of the CDs I got from CMC sad1.gif

This is a nice idea by the way.

Watching this thread, will contribute as best I can... whatever the two maharathis decide I'll go along with it. I have one request though, since while cataloguing my songs I find so many files for one song, which I am loath to delete summarily because I have found more than one version of the same song inadvertently. Can we keep this in mind too while deciding the modus operandi (I really really don't want to download several other copies of a similar file and back them up and...) sigh.gif

Sani - look for Dar dar ki thokarein in Shuklas ji's thread... it's been uploaded recently.

Often I download songs I know I already have, and in the process obtained better tracks. Then I delete the inferior one/s. But unless I download and listen and compare the tracks, most likely I wouldn't notice the difference!

I'm positive a Lata fan such as yourself would have most, perhaps all, of the songs in my compilation. As I'd mentioned, few of them are rare and even they may not be rare for ardent fans.

The songs in my chronological collection are listed in the attachments:

Attached File  Doc2.doc ( 118 k ) Number of hits: 62 by members

Unni,

I have a nice song of 1948 - which I got from you - my tag says it is a DVD rip
Mere phoolon mein chupi hai jawani - from the same film Anokha pyar 1948

Also, I wanted to let you know that Barsaat songs may have to re-classified since the film's release was in 1949.

Thanks, Sri. I got the year of "BARSAAT" from Earthmusic, but yes, it was released in 1949.

Please upload the song from "ANOKHA PYAR" since you already have it.

ok ..will u/l 'meri phoolon mein'

meanwhile....there seem to be at least half a dozen songs of Lata in the film MAJBOOR 1948 ...with music of Ghulam Haider. Of these, one seems to have been quite a popular one.....'Dil mera toda, haye mujhe kahin ka na chhoda'

Does anyone have a good quality version of this song ?????

Well then, get started on chronologically listing Lata-ji's sister's best songs. (This is appearing in the Lata forum, mind you glare.gif ). You'll be expected to contribute in no small measure. laugh.gif

Hint: Year of film can be obtained from UltraIndia Filmography and Earthmusic.

So how does this work?? All of us will download everything, compare and make our own better uploads, to be downloaded by others for another comparison and... some of us might just upload our files w/o taking the time to compare, anyway we can make this process more effective?

For filling in the gaps we'll just upload whatever song we like or run it by U ji first??

I see myself being engulfed by files... drowning in a sea of music!!

Unless you feel a track is particularly bad, and you happen to have a better copy, no need to go through all this rigmarole. laugh.gif

No need to run it by me. Suggestions/uploads are most welcome. smile.gif

That's easy to answer: I wouldn't know the source of each and every song. laugh.gif

In fact, in some instances I rejected the recordings I'd copied from original CDs, since HF uploads or my cleaned version of the audio-tape recording sounded better.

As for song-length, it should be no problem to mention it.

I've made it a point to delete the blank sections before/after the song, because that's where hiss/disturbances are most noticeable.

Just remembered a lovely song from 1950 which is not in my compilation:

"Jaatey Ho Toh Jaao, Hum Bhi Yahaan Vaadon Ke Sahaarey Jee Lengey"
("KHEL" - Music Sajjad Hussain)

If someone has it in good quality, please upload. Thanks!

Initially I'd thought I'd compile 200 of my favourite songs of Lata-ji. Then it went up to 250. Now it's around 275. Bet it goes up to 300, just about right for 20 audio CDS. After my hard-drive crash experience, I've now saved a few copies of this compilation on DVD disks! But uploading the whole lot is gonna be a real job!

Posted by: unni Apr 10 2006, 07:23 PM

A sprinkling of duets have been included in this compilation, representing Lata-ji's musical collaboration with the great male artistes of that era. The duets were chosen for different reasons. The duet with Rafi-sahab from "BIRHA KI RAAT" was one of their early duets, an "innocent" uncomplicated tune representative of the times, as a precursor to three decades of fruitful collaboration. The duets with Karan Dewan, Talat-sahab, Mukesh-ji and Kishore-da I consider particularly melodious and memorable landmarks of HFM. The one duet (coming up later) with Manna Dey, was incidental, for it was predominantly in Lata-ji's voice. I could not resist including an ethereal duet with Hemant-da (also coming up). I intend to add the beautiful duet with Mahendra Kapoor from "Adventures of Robin Hood".

Many of the songs, and particularly most from 1960 onwards, come under the definition of "easily-available songs". Even earlier songs, such as the classic 'Yeh Zindagi Usiki Hai" can be found on any compilation of Lata-ji's best songs, just as "Aayega Aaneywala" from "MAHAL". Such songs are being uploaded in this thread only for chronological continuity, and my apologies for uploading such popular songs.

Music companies often include only one song from a movie in each compilation. But I've gone by the quality of the songs, and in instances such as "BARSAAT", "AAH", "YASMIN", etc. there were several lovely songs of Lata-ji in the same movie, hence I've included them.

Great minds think alike. (Fools seldom differ! laugh.gif ). I was in fact planning a program in two parts, with one song for each year. Maybe, after the uploads.

Also I think my copy of chandaa re jaa re is somewhate better (less muffled but more noise, again thanks to HF)
Also will add bobby ji's rare uploads of songs from bhagvan buddha - the ballet (non-film) if people confirm that those are 1948. (songs praaNo.n me.n amrit ghol and mai.n tumhaare hii swaro.n me.n )

Thanks, Balaji. It was nice hearing it once again. But we just have to find a good, clean version of this beautiful number. Surely, somebody has it. So, let's wait for the upload. Otherwise, I hope I'll eventually get it from the CD's I gave my brother. It seems I heard it not too long ago and must have been uploaded on HF and among the songs I lost in the HD crash.

I would also include
mhari gali ma aavujo from namuna
ghir ghir ke aayii badariyaa - ek thii laDakii
dil se bhulaa do tum hame.n - patang

I found this recording on an audio-tape in my collection. The album lists the year of the song as 1948, whereas UltraIndia Filmography shows 1950.

To muffle the sound of the needle scratch on vinyl, I've used "fade in" for the introductory music. Hence, the volume will start off low and gradually increase to normal before Lata-ji's voice enters the track:

Thanks Unni Ji, for this very rare song, IMO this is the best version uploaded so far. Original sound is still intact.
As far as the year of release is concerned I think 1950 should be OK-

According to CMC (Indianscree.com):-
KHEL (1950)
DEV ANAND, NARGIS, MURAD, NEELAM, NIGAR SULTANA, ANWAR HUSSAIN,
HAFIZ JEHAN
Produced By: SHAHIN PICTURES
Directed By: S.M.NAWAB
Music By: SAJJAD HUSSAIN
LOVE STORY ****

The above year of release is also confirmed by HMV/RPG -Sajjad Hussain-Golden Collection- CD -release.

because it is not in the CD. Another reason to curse at Saregama.

Folks, need some opinions/feedback from you. I'd mentioned earlier that especially the songs from say, 1960 onwards, are easily available. Well before I reach that part of the compilation, I'd like your views as whether I should continue uploads with songs all the way upto 1987 or we should use an earlier cut-off year. For that matter, Lata-ji had some lovely songs even after 1987, which will not be uploaded. So, should we just stay with the first 2 decades of her singing career?

Few Lata songs, specially with Chitragupt, Vasant Desai, Salil Chowdhury and less known
MDs are difficult to find. (Period-1955 to 1965). Few obscure scores of Laxmi Pyare are
also unavailable.
Likewise albums after 1970 to 1977 are out of market which have either one or two noticeable
Lata solos. Ex:Jyoti-by Shanker Jaikishan

That song (from "JEENE KI RAAH) won the Filmfare Award for "Best Song Of The Year (Female Voice) for 1969.

U ji, my two cents - maybe post 196? (whatever cut off date we decide) you could just post your shortlist instead of uploading the songs, since a majority of them would be available to/ for Lata fans.

I dunno how many people will want my head for this, but yes, I think that should be how it's done. Uploading so much music is a task and I think we should all have consideration for someone that's such a big contributor otherwise too.

In your list you'll include some important details na? Bit rate, Source (if possible) and song length?? unsure.gif

It's either in 128 or (a few) higher. I can mention the song-length, no hassle.

Source me not know, na? biggrin.gif

unni ji,
i think lists would do for those years.
it will be difficult to upload every song.
and many of late 50's and 60's songs have been uploaded recently. smile3.gif

Beautiful thread Unni-ji, great uploads, Thanks Alot, and keep up the excellent work ! thumbs-up.gif

I think a list for songs post-1960 would also be a good idea, and if anyone wants any song they can request for it smile1.gif

Great uploads Unniji.

My humble opinion is that you should continiou the uploads slowing down the pace a little .Of course famous numbers can be omitted( for eg Guide song 'aaj phir jeene ki' or Khandan song 'tumhi mera mandir').

Another thing I noticed after coming here in HF is that Lata Mangeshkar forum has always been neglected. It has never been active the way it has to be.Compare it with MAS.I don't know the reason why?...May be there is not enough die hard fans for her in HF.Even we don't have a website dedicated to her(in my knowledge).

Another humble opinion is pls dont discuss anything ugly in this forum dedicated to Lataji. it is quite disgusting.

i think this forum is running good.

you cannot make people contribute more against their wishes.

we have many uploads and too many downloads.

but we need to have more discussions too.

I was not hinting about uploads.I was talking about the general mood in the forum.Yes as you said there is hardly any discussion going on.For the last few months there is some improvement.

While the Lata Mangeshkar forum is not extremely active, it seems to be consistently active. On the one hand we regularly have requests for many of her well-known songs. On the other, we have members on a crusade to seek, find and share
rare
tracks. And some of us have been uploading less-heard songs on a fairly regular basis.

I guess, just about every HFM listener is an admirer of Lata-ji's singular singing prowess and has heard most of her famous songs. Her voice regales us constantly on radio and TV, in films and from music-systems. She is also perhaps the recording artiste whom the media has covered/featured/reported most. There are at least two biographies in English plus others in Marathi and Hindi. Her life and personality, her unique stature in the world of music --- they're common knowledge.

Hence the lack of discussion about her in the forum. We take her, her musical greatness, for granted, sort of!

She is not just popular, she is revered.

The music publishing companies have also been prolific in their output of her recordings. Unfortunately, they recycle the same hackneyed tracks. Whereas, ardent fans discover, over a period of time, beautiful songs of Lata-ji they've never heard before --- songs that perhaps did not get air-time, maybe from insignificant films, yet exquisite tunes crafted by composers, celebrated or forgotten or unknown. It is unfortunate, indeed sad, that many recordings do not even exist anymore.

I'll always be grateful to HF for introducing to me two glorious songs of Lata-ji, "Pyar Ki Yeh Talkhian" and "Dar Dar Ki Thokrein Hain". These two songs, though included in my compilation, were not featured in this thread since they were recently uploaded:

Thanks Unni Ji for the Hoor-e-Arab Song, diye baghban ne ..., what a great song and a rare one too.

Here one song regarded by Lata Ji as her favourite one from her early years (also mentioned in Gaurav's website on Lata Ji).
Indeed a great song composed by Master Ghulam Haider, eventhough the quality is so so, conidering its rarity,as it is not found in her HMV/RPG compilations.

Glad to see some more highlights.
Thanks USRF.

I was desperately looking for some inputs on styles of compositions
prevailing during those years among all contemporaries.

A tedious job for any Lata fan.

In one of the biographies on Lata-ji, the author pointed out the advantage she enjoyed over Noor Jehan. Lata-ji had composers from across the various regions of India to create tunes for her --- C. Ramachandra with his Maharashtrian flavour, Hemant Kumar bringing the rich musical culture of Bengal, Burman-dada drawing from the folk tunes of the eastern states, Naushad-sahab's creations based on Indian classical, the eclectic tunes of Shankar-Jaikishen, Kalyanji-Anandji and Lakshmikant-Pyarelal, etc. Her music directors hailed from the far north, the Punjab, as well as from the South. Even Pankaj Mullick wanted to compose tunes for her to sing, but tragically, he passed away before that came to fruition.

Anil Biswas, Sajjad Hussain, Husnlal-Bhagatram, Khemchand Prakash, Ghulam Haider, Ghulam Mohammed, Salil Chowdhury, Chitragupta, Roshan, Khayyam and numerous others, each with his own 'anokhi ada', and we have a melange, a virtual pot-pourri of styles for Lata-ji to interpret.

Resulting in a treasure-house of music in Lata-ji's voice.

Thanks a lot for your lovely & structured uploads. Listening to a song keeping the year of recording/release in mind is great fun and puts a lot of compositions & music-arrangements in perspective.

Of course, you have FM channels in India that do not even bother to mention the name of the film, let alone the composer & lyricist while playing a song. (shukar hain beech beech mein artist ka naam keh dete hain!)

Zindagi bhar nahin (with Mohd. Rafi) - BARSAAT KI RAAT 3:07

There are several excellent songs of 1960 that can be added, including other songs from MUGHAL-E-AZAM and PARAKH.

Any suggestions?

Sorry about that, actually the other one (Rang Dil Ki Dhadkan), is also included in ansharma's list.

In case there are any takers for the Lata solos from Bindiya (MD:Iqbal Qureshi):
Nasha sa chha gaya
Itna na sata
Rafi's famous "Main apne aap se ghabra gaya hoon" is from the same film.

Lyrics are by Rajendra Krishan.

1960 seems a pretty lean year for the MDs who are associated with Lata

Anil Biswas : Angulimal (He composed for only two more films after this, Sautela Bhai and Chhoti Chhoti Baatein)
Madan Mohan: Bahaana
C Ramchandra: None (spiralling towards his dry spell in the sixties)
Dada Burman : 7 films (Apne Haath Jagannath, Manzil, Kala Bazaar, Ek Ke Baad Ek, Miya Biwi Raazi, Bewaqoof, Bambai Ka Babu...phew!!!)... alas still angry with Lata...

Sri:

Thanks for the two songs. I'd add the "PANCHAYAT" song to a collection of rare LM songs. As for the "Rolling back" compilation, I'd add the "PATANG" song. Just a matter of personal preference, and NOT intended to be judgemental about song quality. But after the input from members, I intend to add in the compilation also the following songs for 1960. Bumper year!

BEKAS PE KARM KIJIYE (MUGHAL-E-AZAM)
DIL MEIN BAJI PYAR KI SHEHNAIYAAN (KOHINOOR)
HAMEN KAASH TUMSEy (MUGHAL-E-AZAM)
HAYEY RE WOH DIN (ANURADHA)
KAISEY DIN BEETEY (ANURADHA)
KHUDA NIGEHBAAN HO TUMHARA (MUGHAL-E-AZAM)
MACHALTI ARZOO KHADI BAAHEN (USNE KAHA THA)
MERA DIL AB TERA HO (DIL APNA AUR PREET PARAI)
MERE MANN KE DIYEY (PARAKH)
MILA HAI KISI KA JHUMKA (PARAKH)
MOHEY PANGHAT PE NAND LAAL (MUGHAL-E-AZAM)
MUJHE MIL GAYA BAHANA (BARSAAT KI RAAT)
YEH BANSI KYON GAYE (PARAKH)

Also need to check out the songs from "BINDIYA" suggested by Madhavi.

Rolling way back from 1960, I'm uploading 2 songs I've added to my compilation.

The first I heard for the first time when Mahesh played it on Hamara Radio. Subsequently, at my request, Bobby very kindly uploaded it today. The repeat upload here is minimally sound-edited.

The second is a song from "NAGINA" which, in my opinion, merits inclusion.

[attachmentid=69294]

[attachmentid=69295]

At my end I've also added in the compilation three songs, two from 'MAYURPANKH' and one from 'RAJHATH', all recently uploaded in Kachha Dhaaga.

Just FYI, my compilation now totals 325 songs from 1948 to 1998.

Unni Ji even I fully agree with your view taken that Lata Ji's songs should be classified under 2 categories, CD/CD's for the popular & known songs and CD/CD's for rare gems (which are not found easily on HMV/RPG CD/Cassette compilations). The song from "BIHARI" is a very nice song and I also first heard at HF and may be included under Lata Ji -Rare Gems CD as you will not find this song in her compilations issued by RPG/HMV. In other words a legend like her certainly deserves a separate thread for collection of songs under "Rare Gems" category.

Mohd.

Mem Didi_61: "Bachpan Bachpan Pyare Pyare Bachpan"
"Beta Wow Wow Wow, mere kaan mat khao "
"Raaton Ko Jab Neend Ud Jaye"
"Bhula Do Zindagi Ke Gham"

While I check out the others (which seem like good suggestions), there's no way I'm gonna include the barking song from "MEM DIDI"! mad.gif

Yo! Give Lata-ji some credit! Shure, she sang it. But among her best???? angry2.gif

OK, me got carried away... it does sound like "bow wow" instead of "wow wow" biggrin.gif

Now for some 1962 songs:
Manmauji_62(Madan Mohan): "Chanda Re Bairi Ja"

Roshan's Aarti and a film that probably bombed...Zindagi aur Hum_62 had around six songs all of which were Lata solos if I am not mistaken. Have five of them (courtesy HF) in case anyone wants to hear them.
"Cheen Liya Beiman Mera Dil" (Reminds me of Saari Saari Raat)
"Dheerey Se Gagari Utaar"
"Ja re Ja meri Chhod Chunariya"
"Matwali Muraliya Bajaye"
"Tum Humko Dekh"
(P.S. For the serious purpose of documentation angry.gif ...besides being very melodious )

Son of India_62 (Naushad): Aaj Chhedo Mohabbat Ki

Chitragupt
Main Chup Rahungi_62:
"Tumhi Ho Mata"
"Mere Dil Kabhi To Koi Aayega"
Shaadi_62:
"Aaj Ki Raat Naya Chand Leke "
Burma Road_62:
Not very popular, but ummm...sexy "Zulphen Uljhi Hain"

and two more solos from Dr. Vidya_62
"Khanke Kangna Bindiya Hase" and the teasing, "Jaani tum to dole daga daike"

I think, in 1962, Hariyali Aur Raasta was having good songs specially title song (Lata)..

Bol Meri Taqdeer Mein Kya Hai, Mere Humsafar Ab Tu Bataaa.

I had "Ehsan Tera Ho" tagged as 1962, as per Earthmusic. But other sources list it for 1961, and the latter may be correct. So the song should be included for 1961.

*IMO*, the year is irrelevant because the song should not be featuring in the list at all! It is one of the *very* few pre-1980 songs where our lady's voice is taxed beyond its limits. Let it RIP!

Abhay

hmm. the reason is because this song and even " jiya ho jiya kuchh bol do" were

already recorded by rafi saab and shankar-jaikishen made her sing in same pitch. that's why the effect.

but still it is much appreciated song.

"chalii aaj gorii" is truly wonderful; "jaane kaahe jiyaa moraa Dole" is not quite in the same class. And while on Taj Mahal, the best choice would be the rarely heard "Khudaa-e-bartar terii zamii.n par". I had uploaded it on HF ages ago - can u/l again if required.

Another great list Unni, reminds me to make an addition to your 63 list:

LP launched themselves that year with two films, Harishchandra Taramati and Parasmani:
Some solos from the films:
Main Ek Nanha Sa
Meghwa Gagan beech
Oui Ma Oui Ma
Mere Dil Mein Halki Si

Some suggestions for 64:
Bumper year for MM: Haqeeqat, Aap Ki Parchhaiyan, Pooja Ke Phool, Sharabi, Suhagan, Woh Kaun Thi
Pooja Ke Phool: Meri Aankhon Se Koi Neend Liye Jata Hai

SDB: Ziddi and the underrated Kaise Kahoon:
Ziddi: Ye Meri Zindagi Ek Pagal Hawa
Kaise Kahoon: Apart from the beautiful "Haule Haule", the title song "Kaise Kahoon"

Roshan: Chitralekha: ''Aye Re Jaane Na Doongi"/ Sakhi Re mera Man

Solid output from the SJ camp: Sangam, Aaye Milan Ki Bela, Apne Hue Paraye, April Fool, Beti Bete, Jwala, Sanjh aur Savera and Zindagi

Sangam: Main Kya Karoon Ram Mujhe Buddha Mil Gaya
Aayi Milan Ki Bela: Main Kamsin Hoon
Apne Hue Paraye: Bahar Ban Ke Woh Muskuraye/Maine Bulaya aur tum chale aaye
Beti Bete: Aaj Kal Mein Dhal Gaya
Saanjh aur Savera: O Sajna More Ghar Angana

KA: Ishaara: Dil Bekaraar Sa Hai, humko khumaar sa hai

LP in their second year had an interesting list of films Mr X in Bombay, Dosti, Sati Savitri, Sant Gyaneshwar, Aaya Toofan, of which the first three, interestingly, showcased a single singer :
Mr. X in Bombay was Kishore's show with two Lata solos(Julmi Hamare Sawariya/Ye Rang-e-Mehfil)
Dosti was Rafi all the way with one beautiful Lata solo(Gudiya Hamse Roothi Rahogi)
Sati Savitri: Five Lata solos and the beautiful duet with Mannadey "Tum Gagan Ke Chandrama Ho"
Sant Gyaneshwar: Lata version of "Jyot Se Jyot"

Posted by: unni Jun 27 2006, 02:27 AM

Thanks for these suggestions. Valuable, indeed!

The songs of "HARISHCHANDRA TARAMATI" and "PARASMANI" were popular in their day, but I'd hesitate to include them in a collection of Lata-ji's most memorable.

"Meri Aankhon Se Koi Neend Liye Jata Hai"
from "POOJA KE PHOOL" has already been included.

I've made a note to add "Ye Meri Zindagi Ek Pagal Hawa" from "ZIDDI", plus "Haule Haule" and the title song from "KAISE KAHOON".

From "CHITRALEKHA" I'd retain only "Sansaar Se Bhagey Phirtey Ho", even though ''Aye Ree Jaane Na Doongi" and "Sakhi Re Mera Mann" are well-known songs.

Just for the sake of variety, YES to "Main Kya Karoon Ram Mujhe Buddha Mil Gaya" from "SANGAM", even if Lata-ji herself might not approve of it! biggrin.gif (For later years I've included at least two cabaret numbers).

"Main Kamsin Hoon"
from AAYI MILAN KI BELA" and "Bahar Ban Ke Woh Muskuraye" from "APNE HUE PARAYE" could both be included. I need to listen again to "Maine Bulaya aur tum chale aaye".

"Aaj Kal Mein Dhal Gaya"
from "BETI BETE" is already in the collection. Grateful for reminding me about "O Sajna More Ghar Angana" from "SAANJH AUR SAVERA".

"Dil Bekaraar Sa Hai" from "ISHAARA" also merits inclusion.

Frankly, I wouldn't include Lata-ji's solos from "MR. X IN BOMBAY".

Nice though the song is, "Gudiya Hamse Roothi Rahogi" from "DOSTI" seems too simple/ordinary for a collection of Lata-ji's best.

I skipped the beautiful "Tum Gagan Ke Chandrama Ho" from "SANT GYANESHWAR" but it would feature in a whole separate collection of her most memorable duets! Somehow, at least to me, "Jyot Se Jyot" is identified with Mukesh-ji!

Posted by: sri Jun 30 2006, 09:15 AM

Thanks zippoo - for the elusive 'alvida' song from Benazir !! Many of us have been looking for this for some time. What's the source - any idea ???

Earlier, I had a guess about this song. I thought it must have been composed for the grand finale of the film (an obvious guess - since it was an 'alvida' scene !!) and may not have been liked by the film makers for some reason or may have had some shooting related problems (matching the soundtrack to the actions on stage). But by this time, SDB had a heart attack and fell ill and could not make any changes or compose a new tune for this secne ...so the job fell on RDB who was anyway the Asst Music Director for the film.

RDB must have come up with the more lively Asha number 'Gham nahin jo zindagi veeraan hai' which must have been preferred by the film makers. This relatively more modern sounding song was quite nice by itself......but was as far removed from the scene at hand as possible ( which was a play set in the Mughal times...in which Meena Kumari plays the role of a dancer) !! Maybe it was a 'take it or leave it' situation for the producers !! Personally I felt the Lata song may have fitted better in the scene.

My guess is corroborated now by the fact that the two tracks are almost exactly of the same length...though the Asha song has some additional music at the end to bring it to the same length as the 'Alvida' song.

Alternate guess is that : SDB was ill - so RDB had to compose the last song anyway ( as well as another one - discussed in the Lata thread - see link below ). The film makers, after seeing the rushes, may not have been happy with the Asha song ( suitability -wise) and may have wanted an alternate track. But by the time the alternate was ready, it may have been difficult to re-shoot the scene...and so the alternate song (the Lata version) may have been canned - in which case, the 'alvida' song could probably be an RDB composition pretending to be an SDB one.

The Asha song discussed above was uploaded by me on my Asha thread sometime ago...if anyone wants it pl let me know.

SDB had a heart attack and fell ill and could not make any changes or compose a new tune for this secne ...so the job fell on RDB who was anyway the Asst Music Director for the film.

I guess, it may have the same period of making 'Teen Deviyaan' .
All songs of the film were having Mukhda-Tune by SDB & Antraa-Tunes by RDB.

USR,
Teen Deviyan was released one year after Benazir ( like Guide - also released 1965 )....but i've never felt that those songs had any touch of RDB, with the exception of probably Are yaar mere. The Rafi songs sound so SDB-ish and so well composed in totality (i.e., mukhda, interlude music and antara) that it is unlikely that they could have been composed in a disjointed manner ...and that too, by 2 people. My view.

First of all thanx for this song Zippoo.
I had been wanting to hear it for several years now since I had never
heard the song (or so I thought). A tune kept gungunoing in my head
whenever I heard these lyrics and I kept dismissing it as my over-active
imagination. Turns out I must have heard it on Vividh Bharati when I
was growing up. Cause the tune is the same.
Nice song. Wonder why it was never included in the film and why it is
not on the Benazir CD either.

After all the suggested additions for 1964, I'm positive I've missed out on several good songs in my selections for 1965. Hoping that members will once again remind me of various other good songs from this year:

TG:
Thanks for the suggestion for additions to the list for 1965. clap1.gif

I need to check out "Haaye re tere chanchal nainwa" from "OONCHE LOG" and "Khanak gayo haaye bairi kangana" from "RISHTE NAATE".

As per internet sources "PATI PATNI" is from 1966, but the song "Kajrey Badarwaa Rey" is in the compilation.

From "LOOTERA" I'd opt for "Kisi Ko Patha Na Chaley Baat Ka" which was very popular at the time.

Sri & TG:
Yes, "Ek Sunehri Shaam" could be added to the list for 1964. Thanks, again!

Popular, maybe. But in a collection of Lata-ji's best? ohmy.gif 'GUMNAAM' also had the popular "Is Duniya Mein Jeena Hai Toh" but I didn't include it.

For 1965...my two bits...about good ones and some popular ones from that year

1. Mera dil baharon ka woh phool hai- Adhi raat ke baad - Chitragupt

2. Bedardi balma tujhko mera man yaad karta hai - Arzoo - SJ

3. Dil ka diya and Mile to phir jhuke nahin - Akashdeep - Chitragupt ( i'm seconding this earlier suggestion)

4. Haye re tere chanchal - Oonche log - Chitragupt ( seconding this suggestion )

5. Man mora nache, tan mora nache - Do dil - Hemant Kumar

6. Pyar ki dastaan, tum suno - Faraar - Hemant Kumar ( seconding this suggestion )

7. Kankariya maarke jagaaya, kal tu mere sapne mein aaya - Himalay ki godmein - KA

8. Piya tose, Saiyan beimaan and Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna - Guide - SDB ( 2 listed earlier i think)

9. Is duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat - Gumnaam - SJ

10. Mujhe yaad karne wale, tere saath saath hoon main - Rishte Naate - MM

11. Khanak gayo haye bairi kangna - Rishte Naate - MM (suggested earlier i think )

12. Jogi hum to lut gaye tere pyar mein - Shaheed - Prem Dhawan (seconding this suggestion)

Sri you beat me to the Adhi Raat Ke Baad songs. biggrin.gif (Me for Chitragupt very strongly and while at it, why not "Badi Rangeen Hai Rangoon Ki Shaam" (might not enter the bestest, but includable in the "to be mentioned in passing" list). Unni, you might need an "honorable/dishonorable mentions" list. tongue1.gif

Lata seems to have given a number of hits with Kalyanji Anandji this year and came up with a winner with Ravi ("Tumhi meri mandir") another md who is not usually associated with her.

And very briefly to get back to 1963, afraid.gif a song from Begaana (md: Sapan Jagmohan), a very melodious song: "Bulati hai bahar, chale hum dono/Koyal bole kuhu kuhu...."

Madhavi......yes, this one from ARKB skipped my mind ...."Badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam"
..i do like it a lot too...very cute song ...lovely interlude music - so typically Chitragupt......also reminds me of my childhood radio listening days, because i haven't heard it much since those days ...by the way, do you have a good copy of this song ?
You may have guessed - i'm a Chitragupt fan too !!

I remember "Bas Ek Chup Si Lagi Hain" as a solo by Hemant Kumar. Is there a tandem version?

I need to hear again "Chale Aaye Re Hum To" from "DADI MAA" and "Kai Din Se Jee Hai Bekal" from "DULHAN EK RAAT KI". Don't seem to recollect them.

I have reservations about "Kya Rang E Mehfil Hain Dildaarum" and Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi (DIL DIYA DARD LIYA") and "Maine Rang Li Aaj Chunariya" (DULHAN EK RAAT KI), so I'd put them down among the 'secondary choices'.

1966 - a few numbers from 'Mamta' (Roshan) have been missed or left out :

1, Rehte the kabhi hum unke dil mein
2. Chahe to mora jiya le le, sanvariya
3. Vikal mora manva, un bin haye

Sri

Posted by: sri Jul 3 2006, 07:13 PM

1966 : some 'payal' numbers :

1. Payalia banwari baaje - Saaz aur awaz - Naushad
2. Payal ki jhankar raste raste - Mere lal - LP

Sri

Posted by: unni Jul 3 2006, 07:28 PM

Thanks, Sri.

"Rehte the kabhi hum unke dil mein" was already in the initial list. The other two songs from "MAMTA" don't ring any bells in my memory. Nor does "Payalia banwari baaje" from "SAAZ AUR AWAZ".

"Payal ki jhankar raste raste" from "MERE LAL" was popular at the time of the movie's release, but would we consider it special?

Posted by: sri Jul 3 2006, 07:28 PM

One more nice one ...though somewhat rare
Kisne pukara mujhe, main aa gayi...- Pyar kiye jaa - LP

Of the earlier suggestions listed by others...i would include the following :
- Phir teri kahani yaad aayi - Dil diya dard liya - Naushad
- Maine rang li aaj chunariya - Dulhan ek raat ki - MM
- Chale aaye re hum to chale aaye re - Daadi Maa - Roshan
(unni - you can hear these samples on hamaracd.com if you dont have these handy - to refresh your memory)

while these ones - which are good ones - would probably be relatively rare ones
- Kya rang-e-mehfil hain dildaarum - Dil diya dard liya - Naushad
- Kai din se dil hai bekal - Dulhan ek raat ki - MM

'Paayal ki jhankar raste raste' - I suddenly remembered this song when going through the list of films for 1966...it was so popular in that year...had an overdose of it on the radio - if i remember right !! But strangely, i haven't heard it much since...and don't seem to have it in my song collection. As I was thinking about it and the song was running through my mind...(it's beat is still etched into my mind)...i felt a little nostalgic....and i thought i wouldn't mind having this in Lata's collection. Those were the early days of LP's loud dholak rhythms which i would come to dislike in a few years' time !!

Oh yes and so beautiful, one of my favorite tandems!

Lovely songs from Mamta - Sri, wonder how they dropped off my radar headbang.gif especially since U ji already had Mamta in there!

Kisne pukara too is a lovely number, who's the male humming in there any idea?

I don't have Payal ki jhankar either, but remember it distinctly and yes, would be lovely to have it, though I'd need to hear it again to see how much I like it.

I am unfamiliar wth the Saaz aur Awaz number will have to go hunting for it into my HDD - I know I have d/l all S&A nos thanks to the generosity of Akbaralibhai.

if you are looking in that lot ...then look for the title 'Na phoolon ki duniya'. This track has two parts - almost equal lengths - the first is the phoolon ki duniya bit - then the second part of the track is the song that i mentioned - 'Paayalia baawri baaje' !!
