I thought we could all have a separate section for the photographs of Geeta Dutt.....Rarely (at least I do not know of any) any Indian playback singer is considered beautiful. Geeta Dutt according to me was the only one!! (Her brother also agreed that indeed his 'Ranga di' was not only a talented singer but a truly gorgeous and a beautiful lady)!

Geeta Dutt, Lalitha Lajmi, Guru Dutt, Tarun, Arun, Nina, Vasanthi etc. in the religious ceremony before demolition of the Pali Hill bungalow. Geeta told Lalitha that she believed that the house was haunted and the ghost that lived in a tree, was ruining her marriage and that she was glad to see it demolished.

A picture showing the edited out scene in SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM.....Guru Dutt edited this scene out as the audience reaction was very vulgar!! Meena Kumari and Rehman were brought back the next day after its first release to reshoot the last scene as well as the scene before it where Chhote Babu's condition is shown.....

Tarun, the eldest son of Guru and Geeta Dutt, committed suicide in 198[7/8/9]...(I forgot the date). It was reported that the night before his suicide he was looking over and over again through the family albums containing his parent's photographs. Tarun also wrote in an article in 1980s that he believed that Guru Dutt was murdered and names of influential people in bombay's film industry were involved (I doubt that!!). In that same article he wrote that Geeta had to sell tolas of gold jewellery to pay for Guru dutt Film Pvt. Ltd. debts. Equipments were missing and some people were suspected to come at night and remove them. He remembers that geeta had to perform stage shows to support them financially. He also blames his grandmother, Vasanthi Padukone for the break up of his parent's marriage....
Tarun had directed and produced a couple of movies like his brother Arun.

arun is happily settled with his wife Kavita in Bombay. i read somewhere that he is flying to los Angeles this summer for a Guru Film Classics Festival (Does anyone know about this?.....

I had read a Filmfare article by Lalitha Lajmi that Geeta Dutt had been approached with an offer to act in a film but that she refused. Was this a Guru Dutt film?

geeta dutt acted in a bengali film ''badhu baran'' in 1967.
the film was actress rakhi's first film and she played geeta dutt's daughter.

bappa da ,any more information about the film like-director,hero,music director,song etc.
are the songs of the film available?

I read on yahoogroup that this story of Kishore converting to islam is a rumor and not true. please confirm

You are right....I had another photo with Kishore Kumar.....but can't find it now:(

But the conversion to islam is true as Kishore's parents were very upset at that and never accepted Madhubala as their daughter-in-law. They were also upset that their beloved first daughter-in-law Ruma Guhathakurtha (founder of Calcutta Youth Choir and neice of Satyajit Ray) was mistreated.

Who so ever has written in the yahoo group is misinformed. Not only kishor kumar but all gentlemen( ) including Dharmender, Raj Babbar and others embraced Islam before committing second marriage. The reason being that a Hindu cannot marry twice so long as his first wife is alive and is normal. Bigamy is punishable under Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and the maximum punishment is 10 years. Therefore, to circumvent the law they all took the shield of Islamic personal laws.

But later on the Supreme Court of India came down very heavily on such marriages and directed the government to make use of Article 44 of the Indian constitution for framing Uniform Civil Code. This was the case of Sarla Mudgal v. Union of India. In this case, the question was whether a Hindu husband, married under the Hindu law, by embracing Islam, can solemnise second marriage The Court held that a Hindu marriage solemnised under the Hindu law can only be dissolved on any of the grounds specified under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Conversion to Islam and Marrying again would not, by itself, dissolve the Hindu marriage under the Act. And, thus, a second marriage solemnised after converting to Islam would be an offence under Section 494 of the Indian Penal Code.

Hope this will clear the minds of all of us why they all embraced Islam before getting married second time.

Thanks for all these lovely pictures. The picture you picked up from a Bengali Magazine is a brilliant print. In the film "Kala Bazar" (1960) too you can catch a glimpse of Geeta Dutt along with Guru Dutt as they come to attend the premiere of Mother India. Other singers who can be spotted are Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar (with wife Ruma Guha Thakurta).

He was in Britain for a concert tour but instead of staying at a posh hotel he was happier visiting us. Being a Punjabi, he loved his home cooked food. I have numerous photos of Rafi Sahib taken both in Britain and at his home in Bombay over all the years that we were fortunate enough to spend with him. Some are too private because they include pics of female members of his family, but ones like these I have permisson to share with his fans. Note Rafi Sahib's big smile and the watch! He loved watches and had a huge collection.

Under "Hamara Photos" I saw a few pics of Geetaji with Rafi saab. Also was seen a pic of her with Talat saab. I believe the new book " Letters of Guru Dutt to Geeta" would have some more family pics of the couple, especially Geetaji.

Hi All,

There were 2 threads running on photos of Geetaji. One was started by late Bappa ji and the other one was started by guest72.

On my request, Nimii ji has merged these 2 threads now.

Many thanks to all the contributors to this thread. I have gone through all the threads by bappa ji. He must have been one of the most ardent fans of Geetaji. It was very sad to know about his demise at such an early age.

I think "ugly" here is a relative term. What Bappa meant to say was how she had spoled her health (and looks) after demise of her husband.

Would like to add another thing since you seem to be new to HF (not that I am very senior here). Bappa Chatterji expired at a very young age last year.

It was a great loss to his family and also this forum where he was a dedicated contributor.

I am sure you would have seen some discussion about planned programs birth anniversary of Geetaji on 23rd of November (i.e. coming Thursday)

In the group phot of Geetaji with RajKapoorsaab and Rafi saab the lady with the young girl seems to be Leela Naidu.

I lived in Mumbai briefly from 1966 to 1975. I lived in Santacruz-west and Geetaji stayed in the same building as us. She had moved there soon after I think-Guruduttji passed away. She had her 3 little children-2 boys Tarun, Arun and the young girl-can't remember her name.
There were a lot of film people in the same building-Mohan Chotiji, Hemantda's sisterinlaw, Br.R. Chopraji's chief editor, Jeetendraji's sister etc. We used to have great time at Holi where Geetaji and Tuntunji Mohanji and everyone would come down and play holi. They used to sing as well and really very down to earth and loving. Geetaji and Tuntunji used to sing in their melodious sweet voice and really make us feel special. She always had a smile for us and no airs about her at all. It was a very sad day for all of us when she passed away. She was very lonely after her husband passed away and drank a lot. But you could hear her listening to Anubhav songs and singing with them sometimes.!!!

whenever i saw your name, your posts, personal messages, i was reminded of this picture.

2 days ago, i went home and found this book in library.


your father couldn't have got this book in pune even if he had remembered it.

i couldnt get this book anywhere in pune. shopkeepers say its out of print, adding that there are at least 10/15 readers every month asking for this book.

Hello mahesh...I do not know about Dharmendra or Raj Babbar specifically, but about Kishore I can tell with full authority that it was a rumour. Do you know the date of his divorce and date of wedding with Madhubala ? If not please do stop spreading rumours on the internet ( thank god that I stumbled on this post while doing some internet search on Kishore )

And regarding mistreatment with Ruma it was not becasue of Madhubala, but because of his less attention towards Ruma when Kishore was producing 3 movies , directing 2 movies , giving music to 1 movie and acting in 9 movies, in the last three years that he spent with Ruma ( before the official divorce )

Please stop spreading rumours, it is an earnest request.

There is a book called "Guru Dutt" written by Shashikant Kinikar which is an autobiography and some of the rare photographs. I have scanned some photos and sharing with u all.

In 2 other photos of geetadutts is: Geeta Bali, Guru Dutt, Geeta Bali's sister and the Partner of H.G.Films Hari Darshan and Geeta Dutt sitting during "Baaz"

In another one "Geeta Dutt" acting in an unfinished Bengali Film "Gouri"

First take care of your health. All of us here can wait for a few more days, no worries. We are extremely happy that you are continuously taking interest in this thread and sharing some really rare pics of Geeta ji.

On a personal note. I believe you understand/speak Marathi. In that case you might be aware about a magazine dedicated to films, the name was "Chitranand". I used to collect pics/articles from this magazine in my school/college days. (All that is unfortunately lost in the passage of time). So for several years, especially in the Diwali edition of this magazine, they used to have big articles dedicated to Guru Dutt and persons working/related to him. I recall there were several pics of Geeta ji in those articles.

It will be great if someone can scan those wonderful pics and share with us.

Ok. I have seen that book once in Goa then it disappeared from there. But I can tell u that there was another one magazine "Jee" both in Marathi/Gujarathi languages, but due to some reasons the marathi language book issues stopped. So, its really bad that this type of books are not available also. I tried to get more and more photos and articles, but till not yet got. But sure if I get more photos of Geetaduttji I will share with u all the way I shared many legend photos in entire forum till now.

Till now I have came across less photographs of Geetadutt in any sites. But the fans should dedicate more and more photos if they. I know many years back when I was in Goa, I came across a large number of rare photos of Geetadutt which I didnt bother to gather that newspaper on that auspicious day. But now its difficult to get this rare types of photos. I feel there is lot of photos are there which should be contributed largely.

I took this from a video where Lata ji is giving a tribute to Geeta ji by singing the song "Waqt ne kiya". The video shows more tribute to Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman in terms of visuals.

There is another great and rare photo of Geetadutt with Lata, Mukesh and Rajkapoor in a happy moment in the recording studio. The song was "Hum Aagrah humhe seene mein" for Jish desh mein ganga behti hai.

A kind request:

The original pic of Burmanda and Geeta ji which I saw on the backside of LP of Baazi more than 20 years ago had both of them standing and recording a song. I faintly remember that both Burmanda and Geeta ji look much younger in that original pic.

Looks like RPG re-issued the LP with a relatively newer (yet unseen) pic of them.

Please try to get the pic from the original LP.

Thanks Debopriyo for this pic. This is indeed Geeta ji along with actor (and producer) Prem Naath and composer Madan Mohan sahab. The pic was taken during the recording of a song sung by Geeta ji for the film Samundar (1957). Most likely "Dil ko lagaaye yeh gawara bhi nahin"
