Love the lyrics of this song.. Kannadasan at his best!
Here's the video..
This Viswanathan Ramamurthy have some great songs to 'their' credit even in Telugu, most of which are, of course, based on 'their' own original Tamil tunes.
Baalu Sir is a great admirer of M.S.Viswanathan of this duo. Baalu once said that the other Ramamurthy is just an add-on! It seems that AVM's Meyappan or someone else had recommended to Viswanathan to take this Ramamurthy with him. Viswanathan faithfully complied, though this Ramamurthy's role and presence had, by and large, been just nominal.
Open to correction.

Although i love the songs from fifties onwards...some of these songs from Eighties, when the three Rajas were at their peak ...( Bharati Raja, Ilaya Raja, Bhagya Raja ) ..produced some of the finest songs..I used to watch these films in theatre..even though i couldnt understand a word of the language.. Here is one beautiful song..when i hear this song, what i remember is the peace and tranquility on a country side, which no one around except "mon petit frau"...breeze across humid paddy fields...etc..etc.. Now, good music produces poetry too...
incidentally this film is the first for Rati Agnihotri.. HT bhai..thanks a lot for the song..just loved it.

Absolutely melodious number.. Even without the digital works..the music sounds so crisp, laced with the wonderful voices of LRE and TMS..( not to say that i cant understand the song..not needed ! )
Here is one beautiful number..from the film " mudhal mariyadai"..The film is a classic. The story and the editing along with the wonderful underplay by the thespian Sivaji aided by the natural acting of Radha is a treat to watch. A quintessential Bharati Raja film...this song is so melodious..i heard hundreds of times, yet never knew the meaning..
This is one more favorite song of mine...when the Maestro Ilaya raja was at his Zenith... the song carries so much melody, it is as if we are running along our favorite walking track..early in the day with all the assorted sounds from nature..Absolutely blissful ! No, i dont know the meaning of the song.. as usual. The title took my fascination so found out it's meaning.." Dont pinch my heart"...How imaginative !

Knowingly or unknowingly, you have accurately described the scene for this song. The trot is NOT of a Nayyar ghoDa gaaDi, but of two people jogging in the park. My wife and I always refer to this as the jogging song.
Absolutely fantastic orchestration by Ilayaraja. And nothing needs to be said of the combo of Janaki, SPB under IR's music.

SF bhai a series of golden melodies rolled around this period. Idhaya kovil, Aamman koil kizhakaale, mouna ragam, payanangal mudivathillai (I think this came a bit earlier than the others).
Just listening now to SPB's Naan paadum mouna ragam.. from Idhaya kovil. I will upload if anyone is interested.

Fishing out cds? You threw your collections into Bay of Bengal? There is one more I am trying to recollect - a Mohan-Amla-Radha starrer. The song goes like this - Vaa vennilaa unnai thaane vaanam theduthey.. (SPB-Chitra). - yeah got the name - Mella thiranthathu kadavu (The door opened slowly).

Wow..that is my favorite...and there is one more fantastic song from that film.. Kilalodu kaannanukku....kuyil padu..something something.. A beautiful melody !! OmG..used to think that mella thirandadu kadavu..means :slowly travelling cloud ! goes to say so much about my perception....

I do not understand Tamizh well - I know just a bit of the spoken language. However, I have heard a few tamizh songs in 50s. I like AMRaja, PBS, TMS, Chandrababu, PSusheela. I have been looking for old Tamizh songs and was going through this Forum when I saw this post.
After going through these posts, I realize that Cool Goose could be one source where I can hunt for old Tamizh songs. Is there any other site where I can get some rare songs?
Sincere regards,
Rajan

Roja malare Rajakumari.. Azhagoviam PBS, PS. mp3, 128 kbps, 4.52 min
I have managed to collect about 100 odd popular songs of that era. One of my favourite of PBS is Nilave Ennidam from Ramu. Based on Bageswari Raag it is great. Similarly another duet from Gulebagavali - Mayakkum Maalai - AMRaja-Jikki duet based on same raag (sounds very similar to Jaag Dard E IShq from Anarkali)

HT,
Thanks a lot.
I propose to keep visiting this thread regularly so that I will get pointers to these gems.
Last night I was listening to O Rasikkum by MSRajeshwari from Parashakti. Very sweet and energetic song. Since I do not understand lyrics very well, I am attracted mainly by the tune, rhythm, Orchestra etc.

AFAIK, the music is by R. Sudarshanam. I had first heard it on the Podhugai channel on TV.
Shortwhile ago, I found one more sweet song which I think is again from Parasakti. The words are "Puthu Pennin Manathai Thottu Poravare". I have to get details of this song.

Here is a not bad recording of the song that I have. I am not sure if the singer is M S Rajeswari since she used to have this distinctive child-like voice. And this song does not have that. I wonder if it is actually her, then did she assume the "other" voice for later songs. Could somebody more knowledgeable comment.

HT and SB,
Thanks for the links. As regards singer MSRajeshwari, I got it from net. Can't remember the site offhand.
Apart from various download sites, I keep searching for additional info in a few discussion forums such as The Hub (there was one more, I forget the name).
Last night, I heard Ninaipitha Ellam - PBS from Nenjil Oru Alayam. I know it is not a rare song but a great song. More so because I could understand meaning of the Mukhda at least.
One more aspect I notice as follows. I make it a point to get the MD for each song. I notice that majority of songs so far obtained (126 in all) has either Viswanathan-Ramamurthy or GRamanathan as the composer.
Regards,
Rajan

Yes Rajan bhai, Vishwanathan-Ramamurthy were the ruling MDs of the early period of Tamil Music and with G Ramanathan, K V. Mahadevan giving their due too. They split later and then we have had M.S. Vishwanathan, taking over the realm.

Paattu padava... Thein Nilavu AM Raja ( MD and Singer ) Kanna dasan
This is a lovely song. AMRaja had really a very soft and sweet voice. His compositions were also lovely - like in Kalyana Parisu.
Today got a beautiful duet of PSusheela and C. S. Jayaraman from Pudhaiyal - Vinnodum Mugilodum. Again a Viswanathan-Ramamurthy composition.
Sincere regards,

SFji,
Vallavanukku Vallan was from the Modern Theatre stable at Salem, Tamil Nadu. They use to make B-Grade pot boilers but use to have superb music. For those who have not heard the Rafi version, the TMS version is claasic. In fact, I consider it as one of TMS's alltime classics. That is because TMS did not sing in Hindi. Rafi's rendition gave it a pan-indian status, IMHO. Thanks for reminding me of a classic. BTW, which came first the Hindi song or the Tamil song, if you can enlighten me. Thanks. Suresh '

Suresh..i do think they did it simultaneously...all three. The inference might be the Hindi version being done after tamil and telugu...as the production house was based in Salem. did hear about Modern theatres..read in some book.. Every language has it's own nuance and rendition and expression. Hindi being the subtler..We can never compare any voice to another, as none were proficient in all languages..except PB Srinivas, an acknowledged Scholar. "Vallavanukku vallavan" was made in 1965 and music is by Veda. By definition, that means that it is the copy. Some of the other songs in the film are copies of Hindi songs as well. The best song in the film is a L R Eswari solo which is loosely based on "Bali hai" from the film "South Pacific". The song is PaLiginaaL oru maaLigai
"Sau baar janam leNge" is from "UstaadoN ke ustaad" which came out in 1963.

Very well said. We have no qualifications to pass judgements. Each singer -TMS, Rafi & PBS, is a titan on his own credentials. I also love the TMS version as much as I do the Rafi version. I have not heard the PBS version though.

SB..that is very informative. telugu version..Monagallaku monagadu ...came in 1966 and the MD was Veda. which clinches that Hindi came first with Ravi giving the original wonderful compositions.. Cant recall the LR Eswari song off the cuff..

Thanks for a beautiful song. It used to be a very popular song then. LRE's voice added the right bit of sensuality to the song. Regards, Suresh

Thullatda manamum thullum from kaliyana parisu ,s must be made in Telugu for sure too
SF ji can you enlighten pls?
RTP..sorry, i missed out your post. please do away with Ji.. The song you mentioned is " Pulakinchani madi pulakinche" from the film " Pelli Kaanuka". sung by Jikki, it is an immortal melody. the same film was made in Hindi as " nazrana" starring Raj kapoor..

Thulladha manamum thullum is a no doubt a classic. They do not write songs like that any more. I shudder to listen to any present day tamil film song. Perhaps I am stuck in a time-warp.
Best Regards, Suresh
SF,
You just seem to have the amazingly ability to just toss a song, that takes one back on the time machine. And that too a song, I am very fond of. Absolutely great song, amazingly fresh, even after so many years. Must be rated as one of Susheela's all time calssics. I also remember Pasa Malar for Sivaji's great acting.
Best regards, Suresh

Suresh..thanks for the appreciation. I think we are fortunate to have listened to these timeless classics while in formative years..they gave direction to our taste in music..I would prefer to stay in time warp..rather than foray into the present days' cacophony... infact i feel sad for the kids. I often end up asking them, if the music they listen to can survive the onslaught of time..

SF,
Indeed, I am happy to be stuck in the time warp, as you are. In fact my cut-off lines for both Hindi & Tamil is at least 30 years and at the most 20 years. The cacophony apart, the electronic instrumentation gets on my nerves and to me, at least, seems soul-less. There are, always, notable exceptions but the general scene is absolutely dreary and I share your view about their survival. Luckily, my family likes & enjoys, my brand of music.
As I am writing this I am listening to Paattu Paadva from Then Nilavu.
Best Regards, Suresh

Suresh..I totally agree with you there. infact i can be termed as layman after eighty..barring a few songs. am glad that your family enjoys the music along with you. For me it is kind of lonely trot .. I try to spread music by gifting out CDs to younger ppl around me..and ofcourse, surprise them once in a while by making them listening to a beautiful song of yesteryears to let them realize that the song they patronize now, is just a pale imitation of it. I dont understand tamil..not much anyway, but enjoy every little nuance of the song when TMS or Suseela or PBS sing with their hearts out..truly music transcends linguistic barriers.. Here is one more beautiful song of TMS...which demonstrates the fact ..

I feel "Time warp" effect affects most of us. I am stuck with songs till mid sixties and love songs of 40-60 period. However, I remember my father getting annoyed with me whenever I used to switch on Radio Ceylon during the years 58-60. He used to be very critical of "newer" film songs – he used to like "old" Tamil songs of MSS, DKPattammal, NCV, GNB etc. However, the difference is I too like songs of MSS, DKPattammal, NCV, GNB in addition to Old Goldies of Hindi (and now Tamil) film songs. Today I am surprised at the songs my children like. Luckily, my children like film songs of 50s and 60s (no 40s please!!).
Today, I found a AMRaja-PLeela duet - PanPaadi Varum. I am unable to get details of song like movie name and MD. Can anybody please help?
Sincere regards,
Rajan

Started listening to some PBhanumathi songs last night. While most of the songs heard so far are excellent, I specifically liked very much the song - Maanum Mayilum Aadum Solai from ApoorvaSagotharargal (1949).
Posted by: simplefable Aug 26 2009, 08:07 PM
Rajan..Bhanumati is one of the finest talents of Silver screen. Infact i like her singing more than her histrionics.. smile.gif The film you mentioned was dubbed into telugu film..Apoorva sahodarulu. though it didnt become a big hit in telugu... Will post her telugu songs and then let you know.. Here is one of the most beautiful duets ever...a difficult task to pick one song from this melody filled album..
I saw excellent write up along with links to Bhanumathi songs on net by a person called Saravanan. Very informative. The gentleman has taken lots of pains to dig up related information for each movie he has picked up. Just completed going through the write up. Propose to look for non-Bhanumathi songs from those movies and hear them. Must be interesting.
The Paalum Pazhamum duet is really excellent. In fact all the songs that I heard from this movie are great ( I have heard 8 of them). As usual, Viswanathan-Ramamurthy have given great music in this movie (like all other compositions of this team).
Regards,
Rajan

Ok here's the info. First of all it is not AMR, tho' it does sound like him. The singers are Shankar and Nithyakala (not even Jikki!)

Thanks for the info.
In fact I had searched all over through google. I had also found these references. I had downloaded this song from cool toad - Old Tamil songs which had indicated the singers as AMraja-Jikki. Moreover, I got an impression that Aavathellam Pennaley was a movie of early nineties. However, I am unable to locate the page now where this year was indicated.
Therefore, we will settle for this being Shankar and Nithyakala song from Aavathellam Pennaley.
This again brings back the same thought in my mind - what a great contribution Harmandir Singh jee has made to HFM by compiling Hindi Film Geet Kosh!!!!
A similat effort is needed for Tamil Film songs.

When I heard the song, I could have sworn that the female voice is Jikki. I was not sure about the male voice being AMR. But, I too read that the voices are Shankar and Nithyakala - who-ever they are
There is a 1990 film called "Aavadhellaam peNNaale" with music by Shankar-Ganesh. But this film is not that one. This is obviously a film from the 50s or the 60s. So I trust HT's year of 1958. Don't know anything about this film at all.

Radha-Jayalakshmi are a singing duo (I think they are sisters) who are very well known in the Carnatic Classical arena. I believe they were students of GNB. They have sung a handful of songs in Tamil films as well, usually with a classical bent.

Couple of comments: 1) In Hindi cinema, there was a time in the 40s/50s when records had the names of the characters on screen rather than the actual singers. I sometimes wonder if Nityakala and Shankar is like that. But the website that mentions these names seems to be quite clear that it is a singer. So who knows. 2) SF, could you please upload the Ghantasala version of "Vandha naaL mudhal"? I am a big fan of the Tamil version and would love to hear it in Ghantasala's voice.

First off, thanks for uploading the song SF. I was kind of expecting something comparable in depth and singing to the Tamil version. I am not personally a huge fan of TMS, but I really like his singing in this song. When you mentioned that Ghantasala sang the Telugu version, I was expecting something great - what with the depth in his voice. Unfortunately, it did not match up at all; fell short by quite a bit IMO. What do the lyrics mean? The Tamil lyrics are fantastic - Kannadasan never ceases to amaze me. How did this song do in Telugu?

You are right about Radha Jayalakshmi - they are singing due in Carnatic music. And in this particular song only one voice is audible. That is why I had a doubt about the details which I had picked up from a discussion forum (Hub?).
I have quite a few very old nice songs taken from various sources but do not have any details. One such song is "Chandiranai Pol Irikkuma" by TRRajkumari. I would like to Know film, year of release and MD. Please help me if you (or SF, HT or anyone else) have details.

SB..i can understand your feelings. Dont know why, but this was a different Ghantasala altogether..instead of his usual way, he went out rather philosphically.. the lyrics are sublime !! The picture ran because of this one song alone..and the song is so poignant, it brings tears to any self-conscious person.. The lyrics are about the degeneration of culture and values which are so symbolized by humanity. It is about how greed is bringing everything down... TMS is sublime for me. I love his nuances and the way he throws his voice in...especially in higher pitches..

According to one source on the web, this song is from the film "Vaazha pirandhavan" (1953). I do believe that the film name is correct since this film did star T R Rajkumari.

This Aththan Ennaththan song is a winner in every way, be it for the voice of P.Suseela, the way of her rendition, the tune, the orchestration and, very importantly, even for its picturisation on two real southern classical beauties, Devika and Savitri!
